Hello fellow heretics, rebels and traitors!

The Renegade&Heretic faction is one of the coolest aspects of this entire game, and I see people all over making really awesome conversions and paint schemes for their armies of the damned. So I thought it would be a good thing to have an area where we could gather inspirational pictures (and fluff if you'd like) from fantastic builders and painters.

Here is a link to the 2014 favorites gallery, which is now no longer pinned:

I'll just make a list of links to some very inspirational pages.

KrautScientist's Eternal Hunt

Happy hobbying boys and girls, and keep the images and suggestions coming! :smile.:

It's good to finally have a sticky thread for Traitor Guard inspiration, although I think it's a bit unfortunate that the previous thread couldn't be incorporated into this in a more direct form. Oh well...

Anyway, instead of just reproducing my posts from the original thread, let's tackle this in a more organised matter this time around, right? So here are my ideas for creating various types of traitors, renegades and some recipes that have worked well for me when assembling my own Lost & Damned:

I. Traitor Soldiers

Using FW's excellent Vraksian Renegades is, of course, the obvious solution here, but you can also use a combination of Cadians and WFB/AoS Chaos Marauders to create fairly believably, if somewhat barbaric, traitor soldiers:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/6/22/380103-Chaos%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Marauders%2C%20Renegade%20Militia%2C%20Renegades%2C%20Traiitors%2C%20Traitor%20Guard.JPG

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/6/1/372625-Chaos%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Marauders%2C%20Platoon%20Command%20Squad%2C%20Renegade%20Militia%2C%20Renegades.JPG

You can always add in some chaos warrior and CSM parts for more variety of course.

There are also the Dark Vengeance Cultists that will work great as traitor soldiers or - DUH! - cultists right out of the box:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/10/12/420624-Chaos%2C%20Chaos%20Cultists%2C%20Dark%20Vengeance%2C%20Starter%20Box%2C%20Traitor%20Guard%2C%20Traitors.JPG

A combination of Empire flagellants and Skaven bitz will also result in suitably disheveled cultist types and/or heretic psykers:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/1/1/674777-Chaos%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Heretic%2C%20Kitbash%2C%20Psyker%2C%20Renegade%2C%20Traitor%2C%20Traitor%20Guard.JPG

And if you need some traitor elites (or are going for a more regimented look to create something like the Blood Pact or the Sons of Sek), the Tempestus Scions are definitely worth a look! For my own elites, I have combined bitz from the Tempestus Scions, Vraksian Renegades, Chaos Marauders and some other sources:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2016/6/8/806049-Chaos%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Cultists%2C%20Elites%2C%20Kitbash%2C%20Renegades%2C%20Tempestus%20Scions.jpg

II. Mutants

I think that there are several important things to keep in mind when creating mutants for your Lost & Damned.

It's really easy to go overboard with the mutations, but I prefer models that look like a stable, yet suitably warped, mutant underclass rather than the crazy kind of models assembled from the kind of bitz you find at the bottom of your bitz pile. But that's just a matter of personal preference, of course. Anyway, a recipe that has always worked really well for me is to combine Okr bodies with Crypt Ghoul heads. This leads to heavily muscled mutants that will look suitably inhuman but will still have that almost human quality about them:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/2/19/586395-Bounty%20Hunter%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Inq28%2C%20Inquisimunda%2C%20Inquisitor%2C%20Inquisitor%2028.JPG

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/9/12/410966-Conversion%2C%20Inq28%2C%20Inquisitor%2C%20Mutant%2C%20Twist%2C%20Warhammer%2040%2C000.JPG

Even if you stay away from too outlandish mutations, mutants are a great chance to experiment with models of various shapes and sizes in the same squad. To create diminutive - or sometimes plain disturbing - models, keep on the lookout for Skaven models, the small "bonus" gnoblars that come with some of the Ogre Kingdoms kits or leftover models like old Gorkamorka Orks:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2013/4/21/486976-Collector%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Grimdark%2C%20Inq28%2C%20Inquisimunda%2C%20Inquisitor%2C%20Skull%20Collector.JPG

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/6/13/376882-Conversion%2C%20Elias%20Cobb%2C%20Inq28%2C%20Inquisitor%2C%20Lazarus%20Antrecht%20Retinue%2C%20Mutant.JPG

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2016/3/17/786260-Conversion%2C%20Cyborg%2C%20Gang%2C%20Gladiator%2C%20Inq28%2C%20Inquisimunda%2C%20Inquisitor%2C%20Inquisitor%2028.JPG

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/9/12/410963-Conversion%2C%20Inq28%2C%20Inquisitor%2C%20Mutant%2C%20Twist%2C%20Warhammer%2040%2C000.JPG

And if all else fails, you can always go completely Mad Max for fun:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/6/16/377844-Conversion%2C%20Inq28%2C%20Inquisitor%2C%20Mutant%2C%20Twist%2C%20Warhammer%2040%2C000.JPG

The models resulting from these conversions will work great for breaking up large squads that might otherwise end up a bit too samey and imbue your mutants with that extra bit of character.

III. Big Mutants/Traitor Ogryns/...

The sky's really the limit with these, but here are some ideas that have worked well for me:

One, using WFB Ogres and convert them into suitably disgusting Traitor Ogryns:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/9/19/413078-Berserkers%2C%20Big%20Mutant%2C%20Chaos%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Lntd%2C%20Ogryns%2C%20Traitor%20Guard.JPG

Of course these could also be used as, say chaos spawn, if the need arises.

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2012/9/19/413077-Berserkers%2C%20Big%20Mutant%2C%20Chaos%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Lntd%2C%20Ogryns%2C%20Traitor%20Guard.JPG

Two, there are some models in GW's catalogue that make for excellent big mutants with very little work. Here's an AdMech combat servitor I built using one of the Blood Island rat ogres as a base model:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/11/28/760180-Adeptus%20Mechanicus%2C%20Admech%2C%20Chimeric%20Servitor%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Inq28%2C%20Inquisimunda.jpg

IV. Pit slaves/combat servitors/...

The Bloodreaver models from the Age of Sigmar starter box would really work as cultists or Khornate traitors, of course. But if you are going for something a little different (or less Khornate), combine them with some crude Ork bionics and some AdMech bitz to create pretty convincing pit slaves and/or combat servitors:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2016/3/10/784936-Conversion%2C%20Cyborg%2C%20Gladiator%2C%20Inq28%2C%20Inquisimunda%2C%20Inquisitor%2C%20Inquisitor%2028.JPG

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2016/3/13/785459-Conversion%2C%20Cyborg%2C%20Gladiator%2C%20Inq28%2C%20Inquisimunda%2C%20Inquisitor%2C%20Inquisitor%2028.JPG

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2016/3/17/786269-Conversion%2C%20Cyborg%2C%20Gang%2C%20Gladiator%2C%20Inq28%2C%20Inquisimunda%2C%20Inquisitor%2C%20Inquisitor%2028.JPG

This approach works especially well if you want to theme your army around a worker's revolt or are going for a more postapocalyptic look.

V. Traitor commanders

In closing, here are some kitbashes and fairly easy conversions I have created to represent squad leaders, champions or arch heretics for my Traitor Guard:

http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/10/3/651935-Chaos%2C%20Conversion%2C%20Kitbash%2C%20Renegade%20Militia%2C%20Renegades%2C%20Traitor%20Guard.jpeg

Hope this helps! :smile.:

Instead of just posting what we make ourselves, do you guys think we should also post inspirational things we find during our travels on the internet? Because I find stuff here and there that look really cool and heretical, but I'm unsure if I should post it since it's basically someone elses hard work.

although I think it's a bit unfortunate that the previous thread couldn't be incorporated into this in a more direct form.

It's basically because I didn't want to "muddy up" the new thread with content from the old one by just merging them together. A fresh start! That...and I didn't want to copy/paste a crapton of images, but I might do it if I have a boring day at work or something. :)

Also, remember people, it's not a competition. If you think you have made a really cool model/unit, take a pic and post it! :)

Here's an old Sentinel I built ages ago but I never bought more than one so I can't use it, haha :D

I see your point, but the old thread was especially useful in that it featured many models that people had found all over the internet -- now, if someone were to go through the old thread and collect all those, that would probably be the optimal solution. I actually considered doing it myself, but was ultimately just too darn lazy ;)

That is a very nice Sentinel, btw!

I hope the commissar doesn't find me in here but I have to admit reading this section is my secret pleasure! You guys really are an inspiration in the conversion department! Love your work and hope one day I can meet a renegade army in battle.

That's how it starts...then you make a model for fun...that turns into a squad...and then you're in full rebellion! :D

Some examples from my side as well:
IynKSb0.jpg

Anvil's regiments parts can be used to make interesting squad leaders/enforcers and veterans with ease. I think the bullet proof heads are amazing for enforcer concepts.

lKixwcD.jpg

For the militias that compose part of my army I used the respirator heads which also give a really nice post apocalyptic look to the models.

EjRXA5c.jpg

Using the GSC neophytes box can also provide some interesting soldiers and especially mutants as you get some extra torsos and lots of arms from the sprues. With some green stuff you can make amazing mutations as well since the torsos will need work to fit cadian/anvil's legs.

pfWJtlr.jpg

Some heads from statuesque miniatures can also help in making mixed gender squads.

Statuesque Miniatures heads are metal so a bit heavier then regular heads but once glued well I have had no issues.
If you feel the necks are too narrow a little green stuff around it should do the trick.

Scale wise as you can see in the pictures they fit very well.

Variety is decent and the owner is very nice (I had some issues with the local delivery company and he helped a lot).

I've converted some chaos cultists using genestealer cultists, the fronts of necromunda goliath heads and scratch built chaos stars.

Here's a picture of the whole squad unpainted - other than the ones above and the squad leader, they all have genestealer cultist heads.
