Thanks peeps, pretty happy with the skin-tone, but I need to work on the freehand

You should try fine point sharpie style/artis pens for your circuit board tattoos, nice thin lines.

It looks glorious.

Yeah, what I'm gonna try and do is unearth some of my finer brushes, which should make this way easier, but if that doesn't help a great deal, fine point pens sound like they could be real useful

Been a while, but I've been trying my hand at a bit of sculpting for the first time in an attempt to 'iron-handsify' some of the B@C models, I've got a little trimming & filing to do but here's progress so far:

Next up I need to get my hands on some plastic rod so I can start making rivets to add to the new trims

It's been a while, but having assembled a whole two models from B@C, I obviously deserved a treat in the form of Burning of Prospero :happy.:

I thought I'd have fun with a one-off conversion before I dive into modifying 30 MkIII torsos to emulate the FW Iron Hands upgrade set, so this is Castellan Vostler of the Imperial Fists 315th Demi-Company, part of a prospective Shattered Legions force:

gallery_53779_9225_476412.jpg

gallery_53779_9225_383327.jpg

There's still a decent amount of work left to do on him, including filling in the remaining KSons detail on the cape & backpack, as well as the runes along the boltgun & patterning on the left knee, plus I need to fill in the joint behind the re-positioned right knee. Once that's done I'll need to add some Imperial Fists detailing, but considering my sculpting skills are only really up to adding trims and filling gaps, I'll likely have to wait till the (possibly distant) future when I grab some IF upgrades & brass etch to build the rest of the VIIth Legion contingent. Plus I'm planning on roughing up the helmet a bit to make it look like he's been using it as a bludgeon :blink.:

Thanks everyone, glad to hear you're all fans of the direction I went with him

Cor, took your time uploading more!

He looks good.

It's not the rate of uploading that's the issue, it's the rate of, y'know, actually doing anything :P

Have you got a parts breakdown for him, as that is an extremely well posed model

Thanks - all the components are from Betrayal at Calth and Battle of Prospero, as those are the only two boxes I actually own anymore :happy.:

Full breakdown:

  • The torso, legs, bolter and scabbard are all from Geigor - all of which had every bit of Space Wolf detailing removed (with the exception of the pelt) - I even went to the extent of removing the little bits of trim which project at angles away from the edges, so the trim is all flush lines. Because the sword is obviously too long for the scabbard, I cut off the bottom of the sheath just before it curves, giving a partial scabbard to just hold the sword in place (and yes, I know it's on the wrong side of his body compared to which hand he's holding the sword, but considering he's clubbing fools with his helmet, I deemed it feasible he might have swapped hands :P ). To re-position the leg, I trimmed back the lower thigh, and used a bit of sprue to bridge the gap between the knee and leg. This took a bit of trial and error to get right, but arranging the legs on the base together made it considerably easier. I also cut away all the snap-fit tags from these components, to allow for a range of posing.
  • The sword arm is from the MkIV sergeant in B@C, with the hand & hilt of the power sword from the same sprue. The blade & cross-guard are from one of the Sisters of Silence, with the detailing on the blade cut away, and spliced onto the hand and hilt above.
  • The other arm uses the forearm from Ahriman, and a MkIV helmet from B@C - the fingers of the hand & bottom of the helmet were both filed flat so they sit flush. This was joined to Geigor's upper arm, cut away at the elbow.
  • Both pads are the MkII versions found in B@C
  • The cape is Ahriman's, with the Thousand Sons symbol around the vent cut away so it's just a ring
  • Finally, the head is that of a Custodes, with the neck filed flat

To be honest, it's just lucky that the flow of the cape & pelt match, and that the angle of the sword arm points back slightly, the rest was just altering the head & arms so they matched the movement of the body.

Holy :censored:

Oh my, from the master of the VIIth himself :wink.:

Sweet blessed Lady of Tears... that's amazing. I think I have a couple extra Geigors/Ahrimans, may have to do something similar.

Thanks dude, I'm quite enjoying the opportunity to convert the characters from B@C and BoP, as none of them easily fit into the Iron Hands aesthetic, so it gives me a chance to branch out into some Shattered Legions jazz. That said, hot damn was there a lot of cutting away detailing on Geigor :blink.:

Nifty conversion, brother.

Many thanks :biggrin.:

On a very tangential note, I'm also prepping for a series of portraits for a Dramatis Personae style character list, and I've made a start on the planning stages, including the initial sketch for Castellan Vostler. As a gauge of what the final illustrations will look like, here's a couple of similar style character portraits I've done:

http://orig14.deviantart.net/2580/f/2016/314/9/1/raz_by_leevesy_m-danzgl1.png

http://orig15.deviantart.net/44d2/f/2016/298/2/d/saraqael_by_leevesy_m-dam7gbp.png

On a more model-related note, I'm currently working on turning my Ahriman model into a Ravn Guard Techmarine, which is a pretty laborious process considering the model's assembly and the amount of detail I'm having to clean off / fill in.

Anyway, completely off-topic, here's the layout sketches I've done so far for the portrait series:

med_gallery_53779_9225_362138.jpg

Armando Vostler, Castellan of Endoq, Centurion of the 315th Demi-Cohort, 'Bitterblade', Hero of the Rivian Gulf

In terms of a brief character overview, he was a Legion Champion & one of the Templar Bretheren, until he had to withdraw from front-line duty after suffering horrendous nerve damage at the hands of a xenos psyker. He was assigned as the Castellan of Endoq out of respect, as a relatively high-ranking position unlikely to involve active combat. Over his decade as Castellan, he underwent extensive cybernetic re-building to bolster his compromised nervous system, enabling him to fight again, albeit at a fraction of his former capacity.

The remnant of his garrison joins up with Clan Brannsar after they are forced to evacuate Endoq as it's subjected to Exterminatus by Iron Warriors vessels in orbit.

med_gallery_53779_9225_376062.jpg

Knight Errant identified as 'Quoyle', 'The Speaker'

This guy's pretty much an excuse to include Sisters of Silence in my collection, as he travels aboard a Black Ship, which rescued him after his warp-cutter was ambushed by Traitor Astartes. He's also the guy that tells my Clan's Iron Lord to get his ass to Tallarn, a few years into the Heresy - he's dispatched to muster troops for the conflict, and comes across Brannsar's little pocket-empire. Plus I thought it'd be cool for a bunch of Isstvan survivors to receive orders from a Night Lord, presenting an interesting dynamic.

med_gallery_53779_9225_410043.jpg

Igniax Ozimandius, Master of The Branded

This guy leads the Salamander component of my Shattered Legion force, technically outranked, but deferred to in most things. The facial scarring is from Isstvan V (he's one of the handful of my guys who were actually on the ground), where Phosphex pretty much melted his helmet to his face before it could be cut away.

med_gallery_53779_9225_56350.jpg

First-Armiger Vetra, Warlord of the Ny'zaar Yeomanry, 'Trueblood'

This lady is the commander of my Knight Household's Yeomanry forces (homebrew infantry troops) - her armour is based off this, with the gorget removed. Background-wise, she was a Scion of the Household, and next in line to lead the House, but after loosing her Knight Atropos in an extremely risky battle strategy, she refused to pilot another Knight Armour, instead joining the ranks of the House's Yeomanry to redeem her honour. That said, she has far more support among the House than the current leader, and could easily depose him if she saw fit.

med_gallery_53779_9225_7213.jpg

Iron Mother Harkann, Warbringer of Clan Brannsar, Commander of the Clan Guard, 'Spite-singer'

Clan Guard are native Medusan warrior auxiliaries, separate from the Chainveil which are inducted from external Imperial Army Regiments, and are therefore privy to the traditions and practices of the Clan (this is all homebrew by the way). She's the highest-ranking non-Astartes in the Clan.

Thanks guys - they're obviously a far cry from the finished illustrations, but I hope they capture the characters' personality & style.

A few more for you:

med_gallery_53779_9225_161268.jpg

Byron Valcair, Marquis of The Knight House of Ny'Zaar, Champion of the Ninth Trial

So this guy is the leader of the Knight Household Mentioned above. I'm planning on doing a few concept sketches to flesh out their aesthetic - think lots of gold, ostentatious statuary, masquerade apparel, and obscenely large and fancy headdresses

med_gallery_53779_9225_188003.jpg

Thahmia Imral, Captain-Commander of the Vulpes Anchorage 3rd Reserve Flotilla, Aboard the Battle Cruiser Valiant Duty

Imral ties into the general setting in which my Clan exists during the Heresy - they're in a region of the Segmentum Tempestus called the 'Cymaera Verge', where they've drawn in a number of Loyalist forces to the Forge World of Davorin Caminas, which they're using as a base of operations for excursions into the surrounding systems. The traitors claim the majority of systems in the Verge, and are headquartered at Vulpes Anchorage (where the Captain-Commander's flotilla was originally stationed) - it pretty much comes down to neither force having the strength of numbers to attempt a direct assault upon the other's home turf, so the traitors have to try and draw the main bulk of Brannsar's forces out into a single pitched battle if they want actual control of the Verge.

med_gallery_53779_9225_105134.jpg

Shadow Warden 'Pariah', Coterie of the Ashen Feather

The reason this guy is so far from his Primarch is because he was exiting Isstvan V's atmosphere when the traitors showed their true colours - caught in the maelstrom unleashed by the packed fleets in orbit, the Thunderhawk he was aboard had to enact an emergency landing into a Salamander's Grand Cruiser - one of a handful of vessels which managed to escape with Brannsar's fleet as they dived into the space battle in an attempt to rescue a number of the beleaguered loyalist ships. The reason he was aboard the Thunderhawk in the first place? He was tasked with bearing a mortally wounded Raven Guard Praetor back to their fleet for internment into a Dreadnought Sarcophagus - with the intensity of the surface battle, Corax reasoned that only one of his Shadow Wardens would be able to make the journey back to the landing zone unscathed.

Which explains why he's so pissed off - he's a bodyguard who wasn't around to protect his charge (reasonably, he assumes Corax is dead).

His wargear is based upon some earlier concept art I drew up for the Shadow Wardens here: http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/306729-ihfs-archive-sketching-the-heresy-mechanicum/?p=4474476

med_gallery_53779_9225_374538.jpg

Protus Null, ‘Firstblood’, Leader of the Graveborn

Protus Null is a Legionary associated with the Blackshield force commonly identified as the ‘Graveborn’, a division of Astartes partially integrated into the command structure of Clan Brannsar, but primarily deployed in a peripheral manner, often to hunt down the remnants of routed Traitor Astartes forces. Incomplete records identify Null as the commander of the Graveborn, although conflicting accounts bring into doubt whether he and an individual referred to as the ‘Firstblood’ are one and the same, or two separate members of the Blackshield warband.

This ‘Blackshield’ designation is dually owed to the uncertainty surround the Graveborn’s origins and the nature of their iconography and panoply of war, the latter being one of the few details upon which all accounts agree. Each warrior’s power armour was bare ceramite, still bearing the forge-issue ident markings of the Davorin Caminus Mechanicum. The only identifying mark aside from standard unit designations displayed upon their armour was Brannsar’s Clan symbol upon the right pauldron, over the black iron plate of the Xth Legion which solely adorned the right arm.

The conspicuous absence of the Iron Hand’s Legion symbol has brought into doubt the origin of these Astartes, a factor corroborated by reports which seem to assign individuals traits expressed by the Geneseed of a number of Legions, as well as claiming that the ident-seals of the Davorin Caminus Magos Genetor were inscribed upon their flesh. It is notable that despite only possessing numbers capable of constituting a single Demi-Company, the Graveborn included in their ranks at least a trio of Astartes who carried specialised Apothecarian equipment, further inciting dark rumours surrounding the warband which would be met with only contempt by the Legionaries of Clan Brannsar.

That's the current background for a Blackshield force I'm considering - the idea being that they're vat-grown by the Davorin Caminas Mechanicum, and implanted with Chimeric geneseed produced from that harvested from slain Traitor Astartes. Pretty much despised by the rest of the Loyalist Astartes, they go around 'mopping up' Traitor forces to take their Geneseed & expand their numbers.

I'm sure I'll annoy a bunch of people with another non-miniature update, but I've been figuring out the background and aesthetics around my prospective knight household of Ny'Zaar, mentioned in a couple of the character outlines above.

In aid of that, and as general portfolio work, here's a painting of one of the house's scions outside her armour (and her combat suit):

http://pre08.deviantart.net/b7c2/th/pre/f/2017/074/9/6/mask_by_leevesy_m-db2g9lh.png

Like I said, it was also for general portfolio stuff, so there isn't any 40k / 30k-specific detailing, but it was really a palette tester - I may go back and do a separate version which adds some trappings of the universe. The theming for the house is a mixture of ancient desert cultures and masquerade ball esque nobility - members of the household often wear these golden masks of varying intricacy outside their armour (and even have versions integrated into their combat suits), and for some this forms the basis of their individual heraldry.

The knights themselves will have rust orange plating, with dark iron trim & white / yellow/ lime green iconography, whilst the house's troops will retain the dark iron armour over a number of shades of yellow and orange-brown.

Just a quick heads up to note that because I'm currently coming into my Finals, and what I'll be doing over the next few years is pretty uncertain, I have no idea if & when I'll be able to make any more progress miniatures-wise. The current long term plan is as follows:

* combine the 30 MkIV marines from B@C with another box of 10, plus some FW Destroyers (to represent Artificer Armour on the Sergeants), forming 2 x 10-man Tactical Squads, a 10-strong Tactical Support Squad & a 10-strong Seeker Squad (forming the core of the list below)

* combine the 30 MkIII marines from BoP with 3 sets of FW MkIII Iron Hands & a single set of Medusan Immortals (again, to represent Artificer Armour on the sarges) to form a 'Tactical Phalanx' of 2 x 20-strong Tactical Squads & a single 10-strong Tactical Support Squad

However, like I said, no clue if that'll happen in the foreseeable future - its possible I'll be able to do a bit of one-off hobbying here & there, but to what extent who knows.

So with that said, I thought I'd leave you with the army list I concocted for 'Seeker-Killer Cohort Ultor' - it's entirely non-competitive, 100% narratively themed around the idea of a mobile infantry-hunting force, so would likely suck on the table, especially against tank-heavy armies.

That said, if I did ever finish it & want to give it a bit more punch, I'd probably field the Vigilator as a Delegatus with Head of the Gorgon, (making the Seekers Vets instead) to provide some of those outflanking tank shenanigans, and to spread a few more points around what with the free Blessed Autosimacrula

I've been feeling a little guilty for not posting anything substantial here for a while, and although I can't do any miniature stuff while I'm here at Uni, and my time's crazy depleted by finals, my WIP of Castellan Vostler seemed pretty popular, so I thought I'd do a quick, rough-and-ready colouring of the portrait sketch I did of him above:

med_gallery_53779_9225_401501.jpg

Like I said, pretty rough, but I just wanted a loose impression of the colour scheme & his unhealthy state:

Armando Vostler, Castellan of Endoq, Centurion of the 315th Demi-Cohort, 'Bitterblade', Hero of the Rivian Gulf

In terms of a brief character overview, he was a Legion Champion & one of the Templar Bretheren, until he had to withdraw from front-line duty after suffering horrendous nerve damage at the hands of a xenos psyker. I suspect no one else finds this especially interesting, but colouring these sketches is pretty quick and helps me figure out potential colour schemes, so I'll probably be reeling through most of them over the next week or so:

Honestly dude, I'm loving this stuff! I really, really wish I could do the same! The background bits are just icing on the cake for me!

Thanks dude, glad you still find this stuff interesting - for what's supposed to be a miniatures log, models are kinda thin on the ground :happy.:

I should be writing up proper background blurbs for each of these but at the minute I'm using the portraits as a break from Finals prep, so being able to switch off is kinda the main idea

I agree, your sketches are always excellent, even in their roughest stages.

I like that your salamander has red irises instead of fully red eyes. I always found that piece of fluff to be a little ridiculous, especially that they also apparently glow.

That's awesome to hear - heading in the direction of concept art long-term, being able to convey ideas through relatively basic sketches without having excess detail is pretty much what I'm aiming for

Yeah, I've never been keen on the ebony skin and glowing red eyes development for the Salamanders, which often ends up producing portrayals of what are effectively coal-skinned Caucasians with red eyes, which suuuuuper sucks in a universe which already has a pretty poor track record of featuring people of colour

This one was a lot of fun to do, because it gave me a chance to see what the colour-scheme for my (prospective) knight household might look like. Plus she's a badass :happy.:

Hey, I did a hobbying!

gallery_53779_9225_683294.jpg

Igniax Ozimandius, Master of The Branded

"Come at me, bro"

Haven't got a great deal of time to dedicate to the hobby at the moment, so I'm spending it by entirely spoiling myself with character models, rather than slowly converting the endless amounts of infantry in the two HH box sets as I'd promised myself.

Just a simple conversion - originally I replaced his plasma pistol arm with the gesturing lighting claw from the BoP Mk III squad, but I've always liked the crozius / power fist combo, and I think the open palm alters the pose significantly, evoking the oratory side of the Chaplain / Igniax role. You can't really see it here, but to emulate the burn scars from the portrait (see below), I've daubed plastic glue onto the left side of his face, which creates a blistered texture. I've also tattered the edges of the cape, which is in preparation for an idea I've had with regard to emulating a scale cloak - rather than sculpting on larger scales, I'm gonna use carefully patterned modelling sand to try and create a surface of smaller scales - I'm not sure my sculpting skills are up the the former, and I'd imagine Prometheus' biome probably contains a variety of reptilian species, with varying scale sizes.

Still have no idea how I'd try to reproduce the lizard skull cape-clasps from the portrait, or whether I'll even try, but I have been considering shaving down the fur trinkets which hang from Geigor's backpack (I'm sure there must be a proper name for these dangly furball things :happy.: ) to serve as braziers on his backpack.

I have to admit, having only BoP & B@C to draw from with regards to parts is a refreshing challenge - a lack of an extensive bitz box is forcing me to be more creative.

Anyway, thanks for looking

This guy leads the Salamander component of my Shattered Legion force, technically outranked, but deferred to in most things. The facial scarring is from Isstvan V (he's one of the handful of my guys who were actually on the ground), where Phosphex pretty much melted his helmet to his face before it could be cut away.

I always thought Phosphex was like radiation in a fashion, only a hell of a lot more harder to scrub away (if at all possible outside of using a vacuum). If it melted the helmet, would it not also melt into his face utterly destroying the skull killing him? After all it was that one weapon that would utterly annihilate anything especially with the nature of the chemical weapon and spreading on movement.

Great to finally see more Salamanders though! loving the thread and looking forward to more!

Looking forward to seeing how the modelling sand cape turns out, Its an interesting Idea. Are there any examples of that being used? In the worst case, with your talents, I am sure you will be fine with green stuff!
