So I was long time thinking about starting this thread to keep myself motivated, to share with my brothers and to ask for guidance and tips for the hobby. Then I decided to start with Consecrators and then, I got inspired by various materials to this fluff version behind Consecrators... So here we go, first Dark Angel pictures and short story about Sergeant Amnon, who, as of now, will be my kill-team leader. Sorry if my english below makes your eyes bleed, did my best but it's not my native.

++

Brother Gideon, a 4th company Veteran, wounded at Piscina V, was interred in Dreadnought chasis.

Still needs to be finished with weathering and needs scrolls and seals to be put on, but so far he's coming along nicely.

Brother-Sergeant Amnon, 10th Company, Dark Angels

Brother Amnon was awake again. Still confined to his new cell in the depths of Rock he never before visited, the depths he didn’t even know existed. The realisation struck him that there must be yet more secrets than what has been already revealed to him during his ascension through the Deathwing. It was grim time for him down here. He was a failure. He left the ranks of Deathwing to become on of few veterans volunteering to participate in training the neophytes in Tenth company, the scouts. He never was interested in rising up in the ranks of the chapter, he was a good sergeant, good Space Marine and a true Dark Angel. His only aspiration was to pass on some of his knowledge about warfare and combat to his soon-to-be brothers of the Tenth. And yet, he failed at that. Now he sat here, in the dark, only cauterized stump where his right leg used to be. For the first time in his life, he didn’t know what his future would bring.

++

Sometimes, you hear the bullet that kills you. That was one of the last thoughts that crossed neophyte Gorsham’s mind, before the darkness took him. He died, ingnorant to the truth, yet absolutely confused about why did the other Space Marine, the one he and his squad considered friendly due to his black livery and obvious, albeit archaic, Dark Angel symbol on his pauldron. Yet he laughed at them, mocked them and then took them down in quick bursts of bolter fire and chainsword melee. The last thing he saw was Brother Seargeant Amnon, lying at the feet of the black space marine, desperately deflecting every attempt of finishing blow by his opponent.

The very last thought that crossed his mind was not be one the company chaplain would be pleased with. There was nothing but regret that he will not get the chance to become of the Chapter heroes, that his name will not be adorned on banners that decorate the halls of the Rock. A silly thought indeed, considering his body was shredded by bolter shell explosions.

++

He failed his duty. He failed his chapter. He failed the Emperor. And, if even that wasn’t enough cause him despair, he failed himself. Amnon volunteered for the duty, knowing full well the perils and secrects that need to be kept hidden from the neophytes, and he understood that proper rigorous training along with mental fortitude training by chaplains was paramount to becoming a Dark Angel, and surviving amongst the chapter’s finest.

Right after the encounter with the Fallen, despite loosing his squad and his right leg to the traitor, he was adamant that he did the best he could. He started withdrawing his squad from the area as soon as Master Belial ordered all Dark Angel forces not belonging to first or second company to disengage the rebel forces. He made special haste when the code word „periculum“ spread across the vox net, indicating the hunt for the Fallen is coming to a close and those unitiated were not to be witnesses to his capture. Right after the encounter, he believed it was nothing but thrice-cursed luck that it was his squad that encountered the traitor as he was fleeing the hive city. And, unlike the neophytes of the 10th company, who hesistated a second too long, not having the proper knowledge of what was in front of them, the Fallen did not. He opened fire split-second before Sergeant Amnon could issue supressing fire order or get his men into cover. That split second was the difference between survival and being slaughtered like lambs.

++

„Do you deny that your failure allowed the Fallen to escape?!?“ bellowed a deep voice behind Amnon. For past ten days, these questions and the visits of Brother Chaplain Braemus and Brother Kirell, who was a psyker from Librarium were repeating over and over again, many times a day. It was during this time when Amnon’s resolve started to wane. When he started doubting that he did all he could to stop the Fallen, to save his men, to honour his chapter. Yet, somehow, deep inside there was something inside Brother Sergeant Amnon that made him adamant that his action was right.

„I deny your accusations, brother! My squad engaged the foe on sight, and while two of my men were gunned down almost immediately, we did not falter and we pressed on with our chainswords and knives. The renegade was a worthy opponent in close combat…“

„Is that a sympathy I hear from your words, brother?“ asked Braemus, menacingly.

„I hold no sympathy for the traitor and the fallen!“ spat Amnon back, „yet I will humbly acknowledge the skill of my opponent in combat, for neglecting to do so can mean death not only mine, but the death of my brothers.“ It was with this words Amnon found his inner strenght, the indomitable will that even if his interrogators will deem him unworthy and declare any sentence, he did as he knew was right, by himself, by the Emperor and by the Lion.

„The enemy fought with great skill, with ancient chainsword that looked more sturdy than anything of standard Adeptus issue. His armor looked bulkier yet he was that moment faster than me or my men, always having his guard in place for parry, always prepared to retaliate. Both neophyte Kezzia and Mattaniah fell under the traitor’s blade. He even bested me. The only reason I survived was because our brothers of first and second company came close and the traitor fled. I gave my best and all to honor the Hunt. It was Emperor’s will that the one enemy we all have to one day face, the one that will best us, was traitor to Lion himself. Answer me this, brothers – would we be here had this happened in engagement against any xenos race? I did my best. I gave my all, I watched my brothers die. Yet I failed and for that I will bear the shame until the end of my days, for only in the death does duty end!“

After hearing these words, Braemus nodded from under his dark hood to Brother Kirell. Amnon heard Kirell coming closer to him, he smelled the fresh ozone smell of psychic powers being manifested. Then, Brother Kirell placed his glowing hands on Amnon’s temples. And then there was darkness.

++

It was a hiss of opening doors that woke Amnon up. He got up, unsure where he was. He was was laying on something that resembled apothecarium slab, although the pattern was nothing like any he has seen on the chapter’s fleet ships before. What surprised him most that where his right leg, and then the stump of his thigh used to be, the leg was removed completely at the hip and new bionic leg was attached there. He had no time to think about all this, as there was a bone-robed figure in the doorway, gesturing for him to follow. Without a word the figure walked out of the chamber and disappeared in the hallway beyond.

He tried standing up on his new leg. It was… strange, but not uncomfortable. He felt a bit of numb pain at his hip, the remains of the surgery, he thought. Nothing his power armour couldn’t compensate for until he fully heals. Power armour. Amnon wasn’t even sure he will ever wear one. Then again, he doubted the chapter Apothecarium would waste resources in fixing his leg if there wasn’t a future for him in service to the chapter.

He hobbled out of the chamber, into long hallway, lit by strange lights. There were no candles to be seen, yet the light flickered exactly like a candlelight would. Further ahead, he saw the robed person walking down the hallway, passing straight through all intersections. Amnon followed. He thought to himself this had to be deep caverns dug under the Tower of Angels, for he couldn’t imagine any other place this eerie dark hallways could belong to. His suspicion strengthened when he first saw a creature of myth and fables told by some of his former Deathwing battle-brothers. The so-called Watcher in the Dark. There was no mistaking the little hooded figure, hiding in shadows and watching him is anything but. He remembered all the tales of their appearence that were told amongst Dark Angels for long time now. He even entertained the thought of what was being said about those that were favoured by the Watchers – that any Battle-Brother of the Dark Angels or the who gains the honour of being accompanied by one of these strange beings is incredibly fortunate and is clearly destined for great things. This one wasn’t mean for him then, he decided. For his life has been fairly unfortunate in the past weeks.

Musing about the recent events, he reached the chamber at the end of the hallway. He didn’t hesitate and entered the next room. There the robed figure were standing, next to another two. Of those two, only one he recognised instantly. Supreme Grand Master Azrael, the master of Dark Angel chapter. Next to him was a striking figure clad in black war-plate and a long white cloak. His armour was a mix of archaic marks from the time of old, maybe even the Imperium's founding, studded with bonding rivets across the chest. A knightly helm, crested front to back with a red brush was resting on his folded arm. Hiss face was surprisingly young, gaunt to the point of being skeletal. His eyes were a piercing blue, at odds with the mop of black hair on his scalp. His brow was tattooed with an Imperial Aquila in black, and a broken blade in red adorned each of his cheeks. While he was almost as imposing as Grand Master Azrael, there was another strange thing about him, a wooden rod in the shape of a small Crozius Arcanum, the badge of Interrogator chaplain office, studded with six black pearls hung from his belt. Amnon felt pulled to this man, and repulsed by him at the same time, as the armour he wore was too close  to the one he saw on the traitor that took his leg.

„Seargeant Amnon.“ Said Grand Master Azrael.

Hearing his name, Amnon’s mind started racing again, leaving it’s own thoughts and doubts and forced Amnon to realize who was adressing him. Amnon dropped to his healthy kneed and bowed his head down, fully aware that this is the moment that will shape his future.

„Grand Master… I… I don’t understand?!“ Said Amnon, completely puzzled as to why he was summoned to this meeting, still feeling strangely uneasy about the other marine, who, despite his strange armour was obviously in Grand Master Azrael’s favour.

„It is not your duty to understand, Sergeant Amnon. Not yet anyways. Tell me, Sergeant, do you wish to continue to serve your chapter?“ asked Azrael.

„Only in death does duty end.“ Proclaimed Amnon solemnly.

The stranger next to Azrael smirked, almost unnoticeably. He adressed Amnon in low, menacing voice.

„Yes, Sergeant, we all know that. And we have been briefed on the measures of your zeal and loyalty to the chapter… or lack thereof.“ The stranger paused for a moment, then continued. „Each and every one of us is prepared to die, Sergeant. That is the fate of Adeptus Astartes. The important matter here is, what do you decide to give up your life for. Or whom.“

„For the Lion! For the Emperor!“ Amnon almost shouted.

„Very well, Sergeant,“ said the stranger. „But what if I asked you to chose between those two? Who does your true allegiance lie with?“

Amnon’s eyes went back and forth from the stranger to Grand Master Azrael. Surely Grand Master Azrael must punish the stranger for this heretical question? But he met only Azrael’s brooding gaze.

Then it dawned on him, something he didn’t admit to himself, but something he knew all along since being inducted in the ranks of Deathwing. Since he learned the first secrets that haunted his chapter, since he learned of the shame of their past. There can be no true service to the Emperor, not until all doubts and secrets of his chapter are dispersed or burried. Not until the Hunt is over, for nothing else matters.

„I am Grand Master Nakir.“ Interrupted the stranger Amnon’s musings. „I am the chapter master of the Consecrators, Unforgiven successor of your own chapter, Sergeant. I too was once a Dark Angel, until the honour of leading this very chapter was bestowed upon me by Grand Master Azrael.“

Amnon never heard about Consecrators. He knew that Unforgiven was collective term for Dark Angel successor chapters, chapters of warriors that shared his Primarch‘s gene-seed, and who supposedly cooperated far more and on far more intricate levels that was usual for Imperial doctrine. Before he could say or ask anything, Grand Master Nakir continued.

„Our chapter has never been officialy founded. Nor do we take part in Imperium’s agenda. For one simple reason – our task and our allegiance is to the Dark Angel chapter first and foremost. You have already been told some of the chapter secrets, you have already seen the Fallen. You must understand that the Hunt is the utmost priority for us. And not  only do we hunt the Fallen, we search for relics of old Caliban, for truths hidden from plain sight. It is us, who sift through informations from our reclusiam brothers and try to use this information to capture another traitor, or get closer to the truth of what happened to our Primarch.“ Nazir took out his Plasma pistol, one of the most masterfully crafted ones Amnon has ever seen, and held it in front of Amnon.

„Do you, Amnon of Dark Angels, accept your role in this? Do you promise to hunt the Fallen, to honor the Dark Angels chapter, no matter the ferocity or ingenuity of the foe? Do you pledge to do honour to the First Legion and the Lion?"

Amnon placed his hand on the weapon without thinking.

„On this matter, and by this weapon, I swear.“

It wasn’t until many years later he realised how important and bounding the vow was and that the „First Legion“ wasn’t a slip of a tongue…

„Very well“, said Nakir as he turned to Azrael. „I thank you for this warrior, Grand Master.“

„Sergeant Amnon,“ he continued to Amnon. „Follow battle-brother Quamar. He will make sure you are properly outffitted and prepared to fulfill your vow. For the Lion!“

„For the Lion!“, three voices replied to Nakir.

Are those the Anvil industries cybernetic legs? I never realized how involved they were. I'm looking forward to seeing your consecrators.

Yes, those are Anvil Industries... You do not need to use all 19 pieces, it's in fact about 4-5 pieces per leg, as there is different setup for the bottom/foot. You can either have what I took photo of ended with "dreadnought" like claw, or you can have "foot and toes". And the rest are various armor plates to be put on top of it.

Consecrators will keep coming soon I hope, at least the pre-builds (collecting spare BaC bits today from guys at our FLGS who converted to their own legions). And then only waiting for the 3D printed shoulders as we discussed briefly in your topic, so hopefully those will be good. Otherwise I will have to drop this mighty scheme because I cannot freehand if my life depended on it :( And found no graphic suitable for making stencils and/or mould forms from.

Okay, took some photos with proper camera. Kinda gave up on the tutorial halfway through, guess the point'n'shoot cameras are the peak of my technical capabilities, even better if they are inside a phone... Anyways...

Finished Brother Gideon. Scrolls written on and washed, pigments applied, grass glued. Still cannot do washes properly sad.png Guess it will be back to acrylic coats and oil vashes for me, since the original washing on his metal bottom turned out rather well, the today's work on barrels is just... meep sad.png

5PxGx39m.jpg

Another shot of assault squad, managed to progress some on the weapons, guess I will leave it at that and see if I can :cussf to Consecrators, in which case this would be good enough starting batch for me.

gaS6ITlm.jpg

And a shot of DW squad with finished parchments and a washes, again, :cussty :/

63004Mpl.jpg

ETL preparation picture, the bigger batch of already primed plastic, another half-a-box needs yet to be primed (and assembled).

mVR0ar0m.jpg

Counts as Belial - my first attempt at conversions. Pointers, hints and tips welcome.

EoS6wvLm.jpg

In other news, and in regards to update on Consecrators project, I actually managed to snip some sprues of BaC from one of our local players, so I have the torsoes and old bolters. I as well bought a box of Grey Knights, since I always wanted to paint them and even the box looked even better now that I decided to go Consecrators... Gotta say that box is a godsend. So much stuff easily convertible into older mark armor, different looking backpacks, knightly helmets, old pattern legs that needed just a bit of greenstuff filling on the engraving and voila. Hell, even the back of their chest armor has psychic hoodie so I already have a plan for my new Librarian... And the power swords they have are very much alike those of Legion MK IV - so yeah, I would say that was quite a good idea on my part smile.png Guess I can finally put the first 10 man squad of consecrators together over next week so I have them ETL ready.

Haven't mentioned this before, but as a newbie to the hobby and miniature painting, if you guys have any pointers, hints or critique, throw it here so I can take something from it!

Seems like I missed some updates.

- Great work on your army, looks like you change your type of units to paint quite often.

- Love those assaultmarines. They look very dynamic in their poses. But is it the fault of your camera, or are their lenses unusually big?

- Your Belial count-as looks pretty decent already. Better pose than the stock one.

- Grav and plasma devastators. I like the way you roll man. Pure & expensive destruction. Just not a big fan of the complete red gravcannons.

- Your dakka dread is pure awesomeness, very menacing! I especially like your base.

- Since these are the first miniatures I am painting and I started with DV boxset, I actually do change the themes often mostly to get the hang of it, try out colour schemes/techniques so when I am working on the "better" stuff I don't screw up that much.

- their lenses are too big, that is fault of my entry level brush and no skills. I still cannot paint lenses no matter how many tutorials I read / watch, still too clumsy with the brush. Same goes for power weapons and plasma coils etc. Me attempting to paint details looked like this at the time. It got a teeny weeny bit better, but still nowhere I would be... content with.

- thanks for comment on the counts as, the left arm is proving to be nightmare, might've bitten more than I can chew there; then again, I need to learn somewhere.

- picked the devs up after my first ever game at FLGS, not having enough bits to make pures (will do for my Consecrators) and to have everything magnetized, I decided to go with all-corner setup. So far it actually seems to work. What would you suggest to do to the Gravs though? Not really keen on the big red thingie, but given my skill and experience I dare not to experiment too much.

- Cheers, totally in love with the model, really the first conversion/scratch build (his right arm is CCW, plasticard)

Definitely a great job with the dreadnought.  I really like the split wings on the torso and the weathering looks sweet.

Your Belial conversion is giving me ideas.  I have yet to create one of my own and what you have going on is a really good start.  Your models are looking really good, they will look even better as you put the time into it.  The lenses in the helmets have always been one of the toughest parts to paint.  It has been a year and a half for me and I am starting to like how they are looking now.  Keep at it and you will get it!

Keep the pictures coming!

Sorry for the inconvenience, but my workspace doesn't allow me to quote. I'll fix it when I get home.

- Yeah, I know how you feel about the lenses. I can't get them right yet either. I usually paint those just before my highlights, so I can correct any colour that gets out of the socket with a detailbrush. Some get on the lenses, so it's a proces I have to repeat at least 3 times per model. I don't do eyes for the same reason

- For yor devastators: the options you get for dev's is amazing with the new kits. You get more for your money when you combine them with a kit of assault squads. They have 5 extra torso's with powerpacks (don't need those with your devs), as alternative to the jumppacks. With some cheap devastatorlegs from ebay ($5 for 5), I managed to get 10 devastators from one kit (and a half). And i still have weapons over. For the paintingside, I believe I followed the scheme on the box more or less, with a black casing on the front. It breaks the red up real nicely, which isn't a bad thing since a gravcannon generally looks like a billboard with barrels.

- Wow, I didn't even notice the arms of your dread was scratchbuild. I actually checked in the codex if TL:LC was an option for dreads, since I didn't think your setup was possible. Nicely done.

EDIT: the GIF you linked made me laugh, thanks for that laugh.png

 Wow, I didn't even notice the arms of your dread was scratchbuild. I actually checked in the codex if TL:LC was an option for dreads, since I didn't think your setup was possible. Nicely done.

It's not codex option, it's FW option. Mk. V Mortis Pattern dread. So far serves extremely well as anti armour/anti air killer for not so many points. The right arms for the most common dakkadreads are available at FW, but paying 13 pounds was the option I saved for last. That said, will probably fork out the cash on the TL:AC later, since those ammo drums on it look too sweet to pass up.

At the moment I consider everything that's "green" in my army to be a testing and learning project, as well as slightly rushing it so I do have my 2000 points to play ready and somewhat painted. Then I will start on the Consecrators which will be longer and more patient project, expanding over time and taking good time with the minis since then I will already have enough to play with.

I prefer your LC-version more to be honest, never liked the looks of the AC that much. And yeah, the cost of upgrades is too expensive to be sane. It took me 2 years to order some MM's for my dreads, since the price made me reluctant to order them.

So, as my next update, a shipment from Shapeways has arrived. I've ordered:

While the processing of the order took a bit longer than my eager self wanted at first, I have to say it was very quick altogether - order placed 11th April, shipped 25th, arrived today. They were neatly packed in big cardboard box, the box was full of the big-compartment-air-bubble filling and the 2 sprues were packed separately in bubblewrap pockets.

There is little to no clean up needed (need to sand off the parts where they are attached to a sprue) and if you are after absolutely smooth finish then probably sand them a bit and then polish them with nail polishing foam, but overall the print is good enough not to be bothered. For 17€ a pack of 10, the quality is astonishing. Word of advice, if you decide to order, google for promo/discout codes. Managed to shave off 7.47€ on mine, that pretty much negated at least the 8€ shipping/handling fee.

Anyways, on to the show!

Comparison of the shoulderpads to GW plastic ones, you can see really no difference.

Next up few shots of my Consecrator Knights to give you an idea how they look on assembled model. They fit just as good as the original plastic ones.

Our good old Sergeant Amnon got his own too, so he could finally be assembled! Yay! Images are not to show off Sergeant Amnon, but the fit of the shoulderpads. Doh.

And semi-finished product. Those completely black are just primed with Vallejo black primer. The coloured ones are Vallejo black primer, Vallejo white primer (airbrushed), then Vallejo Game Air Black, Vallejo Game Air Gory Red and Vallejo Game Air Blood Red, all brushed on. Details are crisp, with bit more time spent on them (seriously, took about 5 minutes after the airbrush stage) you can paint them very well without any spots that should be painted but aren't.

So, from my point of view - definitely recommending this guy on Shapeways, or Shapeways in general. If you follow the links to the products I listed above, you can see the true version is very, very similar to the project. You just have to pay attention to select the best plastic/print style possible and make sure the blueprint seems fairly well done and in-scale (ie there are about 3 assault squad pads across whole Shapeways, but only 1-2 useful/in scale arrows on them).

Those shoulder pads look great. I'm definitely going to be ordering some for my AoV, Thanks for sharing . A bit up the tread you mentioned about eye lenses giving you trouble. One nice easy way to good lenses is to paint the lens white first before doing any highlighting of shading, tidy up with base coat if needs be then glaze with your choice of colour at the end this gives them a bit of a glow and because the glaze settles into the recess around the eyes give a nice depth. I use a variant of this method on my lenses but with yellow as the base followed by a red glaze then a couple of brighter yellow reflections, but the last part is very much optional.

Thanks for the review on the Shapeways shoulder pads.  I was also curious about the quality of their printing.  The painting one looks really good too!

Thanks for the tip, will try that on the next batch I am painting!

The print quality is really good, then again I went with the highest possible quality - didn't want to risk that I'd blow 15€ on something and not like it, in the end with the costs of this hobby the difference between best quality and second to best is marginal only. You have to bear in mind that Shapeways provides only the plotting and printing service though, so you really need to look at the design and the designer to estimate whether it's good. This one Matt Sweitzer / The monkey Goes Pop seemed really good and he didn't disappoint.

And if you guys missed it above - do google for promotion codes! You can shave off quite some money off the order.

Some very nice units you got going, really like that Belial conversion, also nice to see another consecrator player we seem to be forgotten, store manager says "what are you working on" I say consecrators and they look at me confused now if anyone asks its "A dark angel successor".

Shoulder pads look nice, I ended up sculpting and casting mine, didn't know there were places that offered services like this back then.
