Pending knight household

Recommended Posts

I've been contemplating picking up a knight and magnetizing the heck out of it and keeping it pretty unafiliated (freeblade?) So it can ally with any faction (especially since there is a legit Gw chaos allied knight detachment now)

And I see this might actually be doable since they have that almost 2 for 1 deal coming up.

So I don't have any (legal) knight books yet, and I don't plan on buying one until the same time I get the knights. So bear with the my limited knowledge.

Allet my current factions are tied into a single war zone of my own head cannon. The Acadian Subsector (named after the region of southere Louisiana where I live presently)

It's for another discussion but to summarize the influences I have used in my scratch notes for the subsector I give them e following.

Avoided imperial compliance mostly thru dumb luck aka, warp storms, administratum error, rogue trader manipulations, and competing powers preventing either force from achieving dominance etc... plus a dash of tenacity of sovreign human states.

Think mix of us revolutionary war, us civil war, colonial powers in conflict etc. (Fan of the starcraft/firefly confederates IN SPACE!) Plus a dash of simultaneous genestealer infestation, word bearer invasion and imperial crusade (black templars, blood angels, dark angels, ig etc) in M39.

So I've decided their are some knight world's in this sub setting who are unaffiliated with either the mechanicum, imperium or traitors. They are a household undergoing a fraction as members decide to side with imperials, separatists, or traitors.

My plan is to build knights with no markings loyal to any 40k faction. Except for maybe magnetizing some banners, face plates and heraldric shields and swapping them out to show the loyalty of the unit in a particular battle. ..

What do y'all think?

I think its a good idea. I'm painting all of mine in different colors so as to not show any certain attachment to one house or the other. Magnetizing the shields and banners 7s a good idea. Weapons, I've come up with a slot and key method that saves a bunch of magnets. Can't wait to see pics of yours.

Well. I'm already to comit but they sold out locally. When another copy of renegades and the codex come in I'll be all over it.

2 knights...

Now to start working on a house hold.

A house devided.

Some loyal, some traitor, some sick of both sides and free blading it.

I'm not sure of the overall color scheme yet, but I me thinking about the iconography. I'll need to make extra tilting shields and banners showing their loyalty or disloyalty. Will magnetize the heads also for the same purpose.

I was pondering diverging color schemes with the magnetized loyalty paraphernalia. Blue and white for loyalists vs red and black for traitors for example... I'll probably rob chaos icons from the Csm kit...

So much to think about

Freeblades would let you do pretty much what you like, but I'm not sure how you could work colours in to match both? Magnetising paraphernalia is possible, but will depend on how large the bit you're trying to magnetise is. With the magnet in the Knight and a little stripe of metal (I've used nail heads before) could work, but many pieces are pretty small. Possible but very fine work I'd imagine!

In case you're not aware the Warden kit comes with an additional shield so you'll have an extra from that :) If you want to see how you can magnetise a Knight and more importantly the face masks check my AdMech WIP in my sig :tu:

I've read yours and a few others. Definitely will have to reference heavily.

As for the scheme and things to differentiate between loyalists and traitors etc. My subsetting fluff is that this split is very recent. I have the general idea down.

The extra shield is a good start.

Some copy paste and subsequent modification from my subsector fluff outline. (Acadian Crusade in black templar forum)

Want to focus on the knights here...

__________

During the great crusade

The knight worlds in the Acadian Subsector had remained largely neutral during the xenos purge, compliance and departure of the main imperial elements. Being much more expedient than the tedious and delicate negotiations with the house.

Before negotiations could conclude the wary high king, who had been observing the imperial actions across the subsector had swore his house to the preservation of the systems' independance. The imperial garrison had little capability to rebuke this sentiment and it is surmised that the attempt to conscript an army from the briefly complacent worlds encited the rebellion that removed the imperial presence.

Now in m41 as the Acadian Crusade emerges from the warp the state of the sector is as follows.

The Acadian Confederation of Independent Systems governs worlds in a dozen star sytems and has a tenuous alliance with the local knight worlds.

The Acadian Confederacy is nominally democratic, but has had all elections suspended since the imperials arived, not that they weren't often rigged to begin with. Rebellious sentements have grown and civil war has errupted on several AC worlds. The knights have been torn between various individual oaths to world's and faction leaders. Ancient oaths to protect the independence of the Acadian worlds are debated as being interpreted as defending the AC from imperial compliance, or alternatively that the AC itself has become an anethma to the idea of independence of the worlds individually.

The knights have a fractured household. Some will fight the imperium and those who rebel against the AC. Some will side with the rebels, attempting to topple the corrupt AC, possibly allying with the new arrivals... only some of the new arrivals are not as savory as others.

The Imperials offer compliance and tithes and the protection of His inexhaustible armies.

While others make vague promises of freedom from worldly government at the price of worship of dark gods...

_______

this is a bit price meal bUT I think it was the important part.

So I see a house schism going on. Some knights will fall on one side or the other and there are many sides to this conflict...

The traditionalists

Allying with the Acadian Confederation

The independants

Allying with separatist militias

The renegades

Allying with the insurgent heretics and word bearers

The pragmatists

Allying with imperials

I'm trying to decide how to handle this. The main knight chassis will all share the main house scheme. Then I will magnetize tilting plates and will have to make some spares. Some will have a house badge others a corrupted icon.

None of the household has a full fledged imperial aliance so imperial iconography is either a no go. Or maybe some magnetized bits .

I'm very torn on a color scheme. The closest to a full scheme I have is to mimic modern warships going with contrasting shades of battleship grey for the main areas. Do some dirty work for depth. Then make the non chaos side of the house a "good" color like green or blue. Then make the chaos magnetized bits with a lot of crimson and such to be sympathetic with the word bearers...

I saw some cool knights without their shoulder plates, I might magnetize the shoulder and scratch build something "spikeyer" for the renegade build.

You should be able to swap shoulder pads without magnetising if you wished, you'd just need to find some additional sets somehow - or make some spiky custom ones!

Yeah spares may be hard to come by since most knight players I assume put them on their knights... maybe a few left over when swapped with Forgeworld resin..

I was thinking loyalists would use the stock ones and I'll custom build something for the heretics...

That's the issue I had too, I managed to come up with the colours I wanted but from there it was slowly painting bits where I knew I wanted them (e.g. grey on main carapace, bronze on trims, white on one half of a shoulder pad etc). I then got a feel for where I was going with the scheme and it came together in my mind. It was a bit slow to get going though, so if you're handy with a bit of photo editing/imagination you could do a bit of recolouring on an image? The scheme drawings from the codex would be a good start :)

That was the plan... Tho honestly a bnc knight painter would be brilliant, I hope somebody makes one eventually...

I'll just have to settle for Ye Olde Microsoft paint... or if I'm lucky I might still have an old copy of paint shop or photoshop lying around...
