Battlefleet Gothic Armada

This is great game...but, man, all those lowly slaves and ratings should be happy I am not a real admiral...for by Jebus, do I take serious casualties during my battles! And playing "Assassination" against the Eldar Corsairs is truly a depressing experience!

Had a blast on the campaign again last night, I'm still not too far though, only just having gotten access to favours which I certainly cannot afford. Absolutely in love with the representative from each imperial faction though, seeing them all communicate just makes me feel all HUMANITY RESPLENDENT.

Had to rage-load my game a couple of times though - one such occurrence was defending data from Orks and they took it and then warped out and I didn't seem to get any sort of audible/ visual cue... And other losses from me just being stupid.

A tip for anyone trying to stop transports - take a leaf from the ork books and RAM them. Oh boy does that save some time. A big ship getting off a full Macro-broadside will also knock off about 30-50% HP too. But trying to kill 4 transports with only 300 points is quite the challenge. Make sure to bring Stasis.

In terms of crew members what are people finding best to level? I seem to just default to master gunner because shooting is the name of the game and then repairs next to keep me in or Servitors if I want Nova Cannon spam. Are the Squadron leaders worth it?

How about Favours? I've not got the Req for these yet but are there any good combos or ones that stand out more?

Hello all. I've just been playing solo battles for a week. For crew, master gunner first, and then servitors for everything spam. I haven't tried upgrading repairs yet, I sunk a lot of upgrades and skills into shields though. I would upgrade squadron leaders after gunners and servitors because you need that -20% ord. auto-refuel upgrade too. I think fighters are cool and useful, but aren't the backbone of an IN armada.

I started IN switched to chaos, and back to IN when I saw the chaos favors as "meh" compared to what the IN gets. Yesterday I realized that favors can just be purchased. My Luna is Ad. Mech. and I have one Imp. Navy torpedo light cruiser and a space marine light cruiser with the extra lightning strike. I think SM LC is the best value combo since you would pay twice or x4 the renown to put it on a cruiser or battle cruiser. I also think it's nice for my lightest cruiser to be able to spawn a cobra to be a probe/extra 2x torpedoes/ rammer while the light cruiser gets away.

It's not a favor combo, but nova cannons and plasma bombs are very good to me. The nova cannons, not so much, but my p-bomb placement will almost always mean a hit to whatever the NC hit or missed.

Has anyone experimented with stasis bombs and torpedo spam? Torpedo + micro warp jump wasn't working for me because I rarely actually get to execute the micro warp jump due to not being able to place my ship anywhere but behind the original position. Has MWJ been buggy for anyone else?

Okay so I've just gotten to a mission where I am defending a bombardment mission against Chaos (as Imperial).

I get 300pts and they seemingly have a lot more. I get an allied Imperial fleet but they are only marginally effective.

When the bombardment positions are appearing all over the map and I only have about 2 ships, how the hell do I win this? Chaos are inherantly faster than me and if they start off closer to a Bombardment location they instantly win.

My detection range is also reduced by 5000 on all ships thanks to radiation - so I lost yesterday because two ships came out of nowhere and secured the last bombardment while I was on the opposite side of the map.... Trying to deal with the last one...

Obviously I could try stasis bombs and such but it just seems like too tall an order.

On a side note - how the hell can you get any decent amount of Renown? Sure I can get 200 for a mission if I'm lucky but often that is spent repairing...

My best way of gaining renown is to short my fleet on missions that should be easy. So in a 600 pt crusier clash I often bring only a 500 pt fleet. The extra points are converted to renown.

Also I had problems on the missions to stop transports. I have started to bring one crusier/battle crusier and fill out the rest with (upgraded) sword frigates. I reveal my crusier midfield to attract the big escorts, and let my frigates kill all the transports as the enemy fleet jumps my crusier.

I barely won my first and only bombardment defense. I had a battle cruiser, cruiser, and two light cruisers. It seems like the attackers only need a second to bombard the site, so this mission sucks. In general for defense missions, I attack aggressively and in mass. I destroy escorts as fast as I can and switch to concentrating fire on their line ships as soon as one is identified. Killing all the escorts and a line ship or two makes the battle go easier because the enemy starts to warp out.

For transport defense, I concentrate all my forces on one side and turbo boost the transports past the giant fur ball of my cruisers ganging up on the 2 - 4 ships holding down the flank.

To gather renown, I bring as many line ships as I can. I don't want to lose a favored ship and I want to destroy or cripple as many enemy ships as I can. I may only get 5 - 26 extra renown for going to a battle short in points, but I get the best odds for victory and maximum kills/cripples.

I don't plan to win all my battles anymore, I plan to play the objective as best as I can, killing every ship I can, but warping out my heavily  damaged line ships takes priority. Bombardment and data recovery missions are way too easy to lose, but I still get renown for my kills/cripples.

Sat here absolutely raging about data recovery. The mission type is just not fun.

I'm against chaos (Slaanesh Flagship) and they seem to be able to just stop me from any kind of boarding action, then warp out? What the hell?

I had the damned data twice and yet they can just swoop in and take it.

I dread to think how the hell you'd even contemplate beating Eldar at this type of mission....

UPDATE: Next attempt I did it, I think it could have been luck though really - the rest of the Chaos fleet spawned pretty far away bar some escorts.

Yeah. Data recovery can be really annoying. Quite often I take the data early on, then lose it just in time for the enemy to warp out.  To counter, I take as many ships capable of lightning strikes/assault boats as I can, and keep at least one of them ready to go (no cooldown) at all times, concentrating all the ships around the target. I hold off till the timer is fairly low, then hope to seize the data just as it runs out and I can flee.

That is pretty much what I did, except HD suddenly did some sort of Slaaneshi heresy ritual that meant all my actions were unusable for more than long enough for him to warp out :(

Next game I managed to surround him on one part of the map, steal it just before I blew him up and had a stasis bomb between me and the rest of his force.

Sometimes, I find that you just lose a scenario.  I think you're supposed to lose from time to time.  Anyway, when defending in planetary bombardments, the enemy has to make three bombardments.  I generally try to use that time to obliterate the enemy fleet.  There are 4 defense platforms.  The square area between them is more or less at the midpoint of the board.  The bombardment points appear on that half of the board, sometimes very near the edges.  So I usually split my fleet into two elements.  One hangs out inside the square closer to the left board edge.  The other hangs out in the right side portion of the square.  When defending each element tries to destroy the enemy in its zone.  The more enemy ships you destroy, the more likely the enemy will not have a ship in position to be able to reach a newly spawned point before it times out.

As far as renown goes, if you just wait a turn (or two) destroyed or damaged ships return with no cost in points.  I usually make do with whatever I can and don't bother rushing the repair.  If you have to, you can always warp out with your ships in a losing scenario, preserving them for the next turn.

There are a number of scenarios that are simply (or super close to) no-win situations. Especially when you run into heavy ork fleets and they nullify your range and vantage by charging pull mell just to ram you the whole time and early in the campaign.

I've found that upgraded Firestorms are great for convoy attacks... I forego using my bigger ships as well, usually sticking to light cruisers; the high speed helps pace the transports and outrun heavier escorts. In any case, I adjust the attack profile of my escorts and separate into fire teams with one light cruiser and one escort and then go to town.

Upgrading your ships is also a very necessary tool, I feel. I was having more and more issues later in the campaign until I figured out some good combos as I wanted a brawler. I probably don't have the best, but:

Upgrades: Belt Armor, Hull Reinforcement, Turbo Weaponry, and Targeting Matrix

Skills: Supercharged Void Shield, Disruption Bomb, Stasis Bomb, Augur Disruptor, Micro Warp Jump

Favors: Mechanicus

21 battles and never lost her

Just had my first clean run of a turn.

Destoryed the Khorne Champion fleet in data recovery first try.

Defended my ship to warp out. Two Nova-Cannons, Stasis bombs and corner deployment behind some asteroids saw it easy cool.png

Took out 4 enemy transports in record time. Two of them just blasted through asteroid fields so I picked them off.

I'm trying to avoid guide and "best ways" to build your ship, because I know i'll just default to them. Other then mostly levelling up gunners/ servitors my upgrades are just tailored to what I want that ship to do.

One of mine is a total bomber with all the kinds plus torpedos. One is all about speed. One is all about boarding with terminators and launch bays. One is all about ramming with warp jump and armour.

100% agree on firestorm though, no other escorts needed. Gave mine both lance upgrades and extra defence turrets.

Minor campaign spoilers below. You have been warned.

....Followed by another couple of clean turns and I absolutely murdered a blackstone fortress, but it warped out seemingly very fast so I don't think I was supposed to be able to destroy it.

Eldar asking for my help?

Suffer not the Alien to live, brothers.

Yeah so I suppose I've figured out Eldar now.

Taunt and Stais bombs. Use Terrain too.

I bottle-necked them into a small gap between two asteroid fields and then proceeded to unload a LOT of heavy torpedos and stasis into them. A broadside from a battleship will straight up murderise them too.

ALSO Spoilers because it's story buuuuut...

Eldar asks for help against the Orks. NOPE.

Eldar tells me there is a traitor amongst our ranks. Okay I'll believe you alien... Turns out to be true!

Eldar asks for escort while gathering soul stones. NOPE AGAIN XENOS.

Go to Eldar Webway Gate, murderise it with a new prototype Ryza Pattern Nova Cannon.

No more Eldar in the campaign!

Funny, I never even used Taunt against the Eldar and didn't have an issue with them.  I was able to get in close, stasis bomb them and hit them hard enough that it was over pretty quickly... always made sure I had a ship with Microjump nearby to keep up the pressure.

It's more for line breaker and transport missions too, once they break an imperial line they can just keep bosting and it's nigh impossible to catch up.

A Swift taunt can at least buy you some time to focus fire and eliminate one.
