Deep in the Segmentum Tempestus there is a small system called Lutum, with a lone planet of the same name. Boasting only a single hive of any note, it would be of little concern were it not for the resources it provides to - in galactic terms - the nearby Forge World of Stygies VIII. As the sole producer of the venerated Vanquisher cannon the importance of this Forge World can not be overstated so even the smallest of contributions is noticed when it ceases...

Skitarii were immediately sent to investigate only to find the worst case imaginable, that under Governor Luars Nadoun the planet had turned from the Emperor's light and he had set himself up as dictator, enjoying the planet's fruits that rightfully belonged the Adeptus Mechanicus. The Skitarii forces would have been captured - or worse - were it not for the appearance of an Inquisitor to spirited them back to Imperial controlled space. Although he didn't give his name, he reported that the heresy of Luars Nadoun had not gone unnoticed by the unblinking eye of the Inquisition and he was already assembling a Crusade to reclaim the system in the name of the Holy God Emperor.

Lutum is the Emperor's, and the Adeptus Mechanicus will have their due once again. The war materials of Stygies VIII must continue to flow at full capacity...

Campaign: Assault on Lutum - Phase 1
Landing and Recon

The opening of the Crusade to reclaim Lutum for the Emperor has begun! Regiments participating in this phase are to proclaim their attendance by providing the Administratum the required details on their regiment and its representative officer as well as listing the unit and associated value.

"Let's see. Some Tallarn for the deserts. 711th too. That'll warm them up nicely."

Commissar Elmo nodded as WarriorFish paced.

"We should have good aerial support too," Elmo added as he pointed at some of the regiments listed.

"Yes, that should help a lot. We'll need to secure the promethium supplies quickly and no small amount of production comes from the empty expanses," WarriorFish paused in his stride for a moment.

"We do have some city fighting specialists, I'd try and hold them back to preserve them for when we hit the hive."

"Agreed," WarriorFish stroked his chin before adding, "and if we're honest we can expect to do most of the strategic planning planet side too."

Elmo chuckled.

"Yes, our Lord Commander is not known for holding back from the front lines," he smiled.

"Yes, well. As long as he doesn't get himself killed," WarriorFish paused once more, "cup of recaf?"

"Certainly, I was thinking all this talking was bad for the throat."

"Indeed. We'll save the meid for the victory journey home," the Lord Commissar couldn't hide the glint in his eye.

"I'll drink to that..."

"Give me a report!" Elmo bellowed over the din of battle, hurrying his way to the forward barricade.

"We're locked in battle with the enemy sir, but we can't make any moves under their aerial superiority."

"Understood. We're working on that, if I can clear the skies can you claim the ridge?"

Lieutenant Torheim smiled.

"With bells on, sir."

Elmo glanced briefly over the aegis to study the ridge, covered with enemy trenches and howling with enemy flyers.

"Excellent. I'll give you the skies and your Trenchstormers will give me that ridge."

Elmo grabbed the comms officer and pulled him close, as much to avoid enemy fire as be heard.

"Get me the Drakebats and Glühend's 77th, I want the Emperor's skies cleansed of taint without delay."

Arcima

Pulling hard on the stick, Winters felt his bowels clench with the increase of G forces. The brightly painted blue Vendetta climbed hard to shake off the chasing fighter. The green flash of tracers missed his cockpit by meters but the heretical pilot had misjudged the turn and had overshot. Winters grinned to himself and reversed the climb, lining up the fleeing heretic in the sighting auger and, with an almost casual stroke of the firing stud he felt the airframe judder with the release of energy from the twin-linked lascannons. Using light to and fro pressure on the pedals, he slewed the nose left and right to bracket the enemy in bright beams of energy. The heretical aircraft exploded in a bloom of flame and debris - another kill to add to the tally. Winters searched for a new victim, there was still so much to achieve before Lutum could again return to the control of the Imperium.

Guardsman

Kelly patted the metal leg of his personal Sentinel with fondness. "Say what you like Commissar, these birds and this Regiment will prove their worth in this campaign." The commissars eyes narrowed. " I know, I know. We have a less than sterling reputation after Tomulsa but that will change. The men are keen to do their bit for The Emperor."

"I do hope so Lt. Kelly. The Commissariat will be keeping an eye on the 49th. You know what happened to your predecessor!" The Commissar turned his back on Kelly and stalked away looking for the next unit on his list to motivate.

"By all that is Holy...!" exclaimed Kelly. "All right troopers, gather around." he shouted to his men. "We will show that jumped up coat with legs a lesson about Sentinel operations. Mount up - we are off to do some heretic hunting!".

Nicodemus Doloroso

A stream of heavy bolter shells and light weapons fire rattled from the front of the Taurox from the heretical strong point. The Gatling cannon span up to full speed and spat rounds in return at an unbelievable rate of fire, empty shell casings falling like a brass rain from the side of the turret. Braking harshly just short of the heretics but continuing to lay down a withering barrage of fire, doors where thrown open and the Scions dismounted with the 2 flamers to the fore. A sound like the crashing of a wave and 2 bright tongues of flame enveloped the strong point followed by the smell of promethium and burned flesh. The survivors turned and tried to flee but where cut down by the accurate volleys of fire from the Scions.

Marshal Argos

Commissar WarriorFish sat outside his tent at the folding table pouring over the most recent reports. Commissar Elmo approached and nodded to the unit currently marching past on the way to the front line.

"Who are they?" he said, waiving his hand in the general direction of the unit.

Not bothering to raise his eyes from the reports WarriorFish said " 7th Scansin Regiment of Foot."

"Bit bright aren't they?" commented Elmo raising an eyebrow. The 7th where fresh from the landers and their buttons gleamed in the sunlight against the bright blue of their tunics. The grey of the trousers and pith helmets helped to tone the overall appearance down a little but still...

"Don't be fooled by appearances!"  replied WarriorFish. "They are soldiers of The Emperor with a proud history and Brevet Colonel Sunderland is no paper tiger. They will do their duty to the last man if called upon to do so."

Elmo once again cast his gaze over the marching men. He could see it was true as he viewed each face, set in a grim look of determination to do whatever was asked in the service of The Emperor.

Things were much quieter back at the temporary headquarters, even if it was still under construction by fussing Techpriests.

"Once those fighters clear Elmo's airspace I want them to immediately move on to support the 144th's early push. With this we'll have broken the back of their air forces so we must make the most of it."

"Yes, Lord Commissar, at once."

"Good. You there, what are you dallying about for? Where is my Tauros and Sentinel support?" WarriorFish's jabbing finger was almost as intimidating as his bolt pistol.

"They've just reported back sir, operation to encircle and destroy the enemy Hydra company has been successful."

"Excellent!" the grinning Commissar slapped him so hard on the arm he almost fell over, "tell them to support Firionel's advance. We'll have that Cathedral back in Imperial hands before even a day has passed! Praise the Emperor!"

"Understood sir!"

"You!" WarriorFish struck out with his finger once more, causing the officer to almost jump out of her skin, "tell Commissar Elmo to get his backside back here. I'll be damned if he's going to hog all the front line glory..."

She nodded and grabbed the vox line. Turns out everything they'd heard about the Lord Commissar was true after all...

HLVW

The Valkyrie carrier was being buffeted by the wind, causing the airframe in the troop compartment to judder and shake. The Valkyrie was just one of a flight of aircraft carrying members of the 121st Darkstar Regement forward to assault the target, a primary power plant supplying energy to the heretical defenders of Lutum.

Captain Atticus West ran his eyes over his command squad as they sat quietly on the canvas seats. Each man was coping in his own way, some starting grimly ahead, some deep in their own thoughts, some sharing a tale or a joke with comrades and Trooper Hicks was, as usual, sleeping.

A crackling voice came through his earpiece and nodding to himself he acknowledged the load-master's instruction that they where 2 minutes from the drop.

West switched to the command frequency "Attention all - 2 minutes to drop - check weapons and equipment." He eyed his men again, "Feet first...!" he shouted

"Into Hell!" replied his men.

Slowly a smile crept onto his face, the heretic would pay. Almost as an afterthought he said "and will somebody wake up Hicks...."

Uneven Frostgun

PDF Trooper Grimes looked out over the landscape of parched scrub and brown soil from his position in the froward trench. The sun was finally setting, casting blinding light causing him to squint and reducing visibility. The Captain had warned him about complacency and to keep a good look out for the forces claiming to be Imperial trying to wrest back control from the rightful grasp of Governor Luars Nadoun.

He was beginning to hear stories about the Governors excesses though, not much but enough to cause some concern. He was just a PDF Trooper and was duty bound to follow the orders of his superiors but...

A scraping noise came from his front, the sound of armourplas rubbing against the rough ground. Jerking from his thoughts, he opened his mouth to shout a warning but it never came. For Trooper Grimes it was all going dark.

The Scion wiped his blade clean against the tunic of the body at his feet and looked to Captain Drusus Lueker for the next order. Lueker nodded at the man and beckoned over the Sgt Major. "Unfurl the Standard Sgt Major. The time for stealth is at an end."

"Men of the 1st House Guards, be strong in your faith! Remember The Emperor is watching! Charge..."

Blitzjager

Brigadier Lucius 'Cordy' Cornelius stared through the Autocannon sights of the Chimera turret as the vehicle swayed over the uneven ground. So far it was all going as planned. The armour was advancing all around him, a mixture of very different units and colours but under the common belief in The Imperium and The God Emperor, not at all like the ordered ranks of the forces of Ultramar.

In the troop compartment of the vehicle the command squad sat and waited. It had been a long transit from Ultramar and the troops where impatient for action but had not been involved in the earlier skirmishes and scout actions.

Soon the Autocannon would be taking its toll against the enemies of The Imperium. Cornelius decided it was about time to surrender the turret to the vehicle commander who had been forced to retire to the jump seat in the body of the Chimera and get himself ready for the battle to follow.

Your contribution to the war effort will not be forgotten, Lutum basks in the Emperor's light once more thanks to regiments like yours.

"There! Over there!"

He glanced up from his map to see the banner still flying, albeit badly tattered.

"I see it, the 710th are still holding on. Emperor knows how, tell command we've located the The Desert Jackals and are moving in to assist immediately."

"Command, command come in. This is the 121st Darkstar."

The vox crackled briefly before a familiar voice responded.

"Received 121st, this is command."

"We've located the 710th sir, they're holding to the last man. Moving in to support as ordered."

"Understood. Well done Captain West, save the 710th and hold their position until further orders."

"Acknowledged Lord Commissar."

West nodded as his comms officer handed the vox piece to him.

"All units this is West. Prepare for immediate hot drop. That banner does not touch the ground."

There was no need to listen for responses, not with his unit. Standing to prepare for the drop he turned briefly.

"Tell them to strafe the battle line, we'll drop in there to form a defensive line and push up."

The whooshing of the rockets had already faded from hearing as the men on board watched the red light. It was the only thing that mattered right now.

"Green! Go, go go!"

The Scions of the 121st dropped into certain victory once more.

Phase 1 End

Minister Nyels hurried as fast as his short legs could carry him down the cavernous corridors of the Palace, the gilded statues and reliefs serving to make his heavy steps echo all the more. Before him was his destination in the large twin doors to the Governor's suite. Only recently installed the solid gold facings depicted the Governor in many regal forms but today was no day to admire the exquisite workmanship.

"Open the door! I must speak-" Nyels's gasping sentence was cut abruptly short by dropping power halberds across the door.

"His Highness has decreed that no inter-"

"I know that you fool!" Nyels took his turn to interrupt, "Why else would you think I had to come here in person? It is of the highest importance, planetary security!"

The two guards exchanged looks before turning to the red faced man in front of them. Reluctantly they stood aside, but didn't help the little fat man as he attempted to push the doors to get in faster.

The suite was as luxurious as could be imagined, the smell of various scents and perhaps more lingered heavily. Quiet music strummed pleasantly in the background, countered only by some heavy, hurried footsteps and some giggling from the bedroom.

"My lord? My lord! It is I, Minister Nyels with the utmost importance in news!" he called out, as much as he dared not venture further as in haste.

"My my, look who it is. Minister Nyels!" a smooth voice emanated from the room and the governor emerged in his expensive Frapacian silk gown, decorated with yet more personal visages - this time of victory.

Nyels bowed low.

"To what do we owe this most dubious of pleasures?" Luars gestured his arm widely, glancing back to further mirth from the room.

"We - we are under attack! They have come!"

"Is that all? I am busy right now" Luars yawned, rolling his eyes dramatically.

"My lord! This is no time for games!"

Nyels waddled over to the holo display and pulled the various clothing and beverages off - Luars neatly taking a glass of wine first. With a few presses it hummed to life, displaying a recording of massive Imperial landers ominously descending to disgorge countless soldiers accompanied by Sentinels and Tauros that rushed forwards, weapons spitting death. Chimeras surged forth lead by Hellhounds pouring gouts of flames over the defenders before a wing of Valkyries thundered overhead unleashing their rockets to end the video in crashing static.

"Our interceptors have been shot down by their Vendettas, the Imperials have already taken Tore-"

"Tore Ekya and - presumably - on to Tore Metbol, yes?"

Nyels was momentarily silenced in shock.

"If you knew, then why-?" he stammered.

"Oh, no this is all news to me, but you see Tore Ekya is the perfect landing spot for an assault. If I were to happen to leave it ripe for the taking, then surely that is where the Imperials would land, no? And Tore Metval? A tactically sound next move too. Easy pickings I'm sure... but all according to plan. As we speak our defensive operations are no doubt in full swing and they will fall right into our trap!" Luars proclaimed loudly so that all would hear, as he circled the display regally, not spilling a drop of his wine.

"My lord! I had no idea - but there are so many, and our spies report they are lead by-"

"Did we not discuss this? We always knew that one day they would come, did you expect me to sit idly by? No, everything is as I planned. You worry too much. Now, I had that Coben beef you so desired delivered to your chef yesterday did I not? Go and enjoy it, next time we speak it will be to celebrate victory!" he passed the wine to Nyels and patted him encouragingly on the back - or perhaps more of a shove towards the doors.

Nyels was relieved, and made his excuses to leave. Yet for all his desire for the beef it couldn't settle the feeling deep within him that things were amiss. Yes, perhaps first a visit to the command room to make sure everything was in order? Then the beef, when he could relax safely in the knowledge that it was being dealt with...

"Hold the line you dogs!"

He was barely audible over the ceaseless bellowing of cannons and heavy bolters, not to mention the unrelenting crack of lasgun fire.

"Not one step back! E Company holds or we die to a man!"

Stopping only for a moment to lob back a frag grenade that had landed by his feet Colonel Prins knew that things looked grim. Grim, but not doomed of course. All he had to do was hold out until the promised reinforcements arrived. The question was, as ever, when this would be.

"Brace! Here they come again!"

He managed to drop a couple with his pistol before they came screaming into the trench, perhaps as mad as they looked. Stepping back to avoid the blow he whipped his sword from its scabbard to slice clean through the heretic's throat, a couple of steps forward let him plunge it through the back of another who was attempting to bludgeon a trooper with his rifle. A smile came to his face as the remaining attackers were put to death by bayonet and dagger.

"Well done! Now back to the walls! Kill them where they stand!"

They weren't the first to underestimate the Life Guards based on their appearance and they won't be the last. Not today.

The familiar boom of a battle cannon reverberated from behind, sending a traitor Chimera into the air from the force of the explosion. This was followed by even more thunderous cracks, all familiar as from the blessed hull of a Leman Russ.

"121st Alcari at your service, Colonel," a voice squawked through his vox.

"Glad to see you made it, I was thinking we'd have to carve the way to the hive ourselves."

"Hah! Leaving you all the glory? I think not! We've got your back."

Prins raised his bloodied sword.

"Advance! Let them regret their failure to win this day!"

The battle's turning point had arrived, just as the psyker had predicted: today, good luck - and plenty of glory.

//-{INQ21-CSFD}--//--//FOR YOUR EYES ONLY//

Sire, the crusade to reclaim Lutum progresses well and much to your prediction. I will not hide my original reservations that such a varied array of forces could operate well, so I am delighted to report my fears quite unfounded. Lord Commander Graves is perhaps far more astute than I thought, for his personal example does much to inspire the Emperor's soldiers in battle. He wisely leaves the finer details of his strategy to his command structure; their experience and faith more than ample for the task. His quiet eye for the worth of others is maybe unusual for a Catachan but it is no doubt part of his success.

So far the heretics have put up a good fight, but before the Emperor's wrath they have been pushed back time and again. Though losses are of course natural Graves has kept his forces well supported, having saved several regimental contributions from certain destruction. Though their failure in this regard is of course undesirable worse still is the loss of experience and history that goes along with such a defeat.

Despite this the enemy is far from spent, and he has quickly learned that his original plans were insufficient. Now he is in full knowledge of how terrible His armies are and is mustering for a decisive strike. The crusade is already moving to intercept, and a great battle - likely the largest of the campaign - is soon to unfold in the plains of Torruk. This is once again an astute move from Graves, as this will allow his guns and training to leverage an advantage over the numerically superior but inferiorly equipped enemy.

I can confidently report that the result of his battle will tip the war in His favour, as the majority of the enemy will be spent in the final gamble.

Eternally in His and your service,

XYC4LL1

The Psykers mouth opened wide as the power threatened to explode him from within. Blue lightning strobed from his eyes as he leveled his staff towards the heretics to unleash a blast of purifying flame towards the enemy troops. Men and equipment blazed with unquenchable flame. Any attempt to douse it just caused it to leap from body to body. Screams became bubbling gasps and finally became just the crackling of the flames as all who where touched by the flame died.

Confessor Grayson rested his hand on the psyker's shoulder. He had no love of the practitioners of this unholy power but recognised their uses in the advance of The God Emperor's plan.

"It is over. Calm yourself."  in his deep sonorous voice which was more used to addressing large gatherings of troops rather than bringing psykers back from the edge. "It is over... for now."

P3AKHOUR

With hard rounds ricocheting from the slabshields, the Bullgryns of the 189th Tebessan Expeditionary Force continued their steady advance on the heretical trenches. A high calibre round caused one of them to momentarily stagger with the impact but the Bullgryn merely shook his head and continued forward. At the bellowing of an order they raised their grenadier gauntlets and fired towards the trench in a ripple of fire causing a mass of explosions amongst the heretics. Yelling again, the Bullgryns broke into a slow but unstoppable charge. Following them, the Tauros Venator fired its twin las-cannons over their heads providing much needed covering fire for the assault.

Guilloom

"Quiet!" demanded Lieutenant Harris Torteim. "Do you want them to hear?"

A mumbled reply of "No Sir." came from the squad.

It had only been a low murmur of surprise as Trooper Merhmann's foot had gone through the ribcage of the bloated corpse at the base of the ravine Torteim had been sent to clear. The recent shelling had caused dust to fall and cover the corpse so it had come as a shock when Mermann's footing had proved to be so unsound.

The sound had been barely audible but "Bullhead" Torteim was not an officer to let any mistake slide. Either you learn from your mistakes or you die when you repeat them.

Moving forward and signalling his squad to follow, Torteim continued to advance down the ravine. Command had given him a job to do and he was Emperor bound to complete it,. After all, this sort of thing was second nature to the 2nd Company. He would find the enemy and destroy them.

As requested, please find attached a full and up to date record of the campaign thus far. Though it is of course still early days so to speak things are progressing well. Graves is an excellent choice for commander, inspirational on the battle field yet discerning out of it. That he leaves the details of how his strategy is achieved to his command structure is a benefit that is already yielding results; we have carefully marshalled His forces accordingly to notable success already.

The initial landing was not without troubles - crucially the loss of our recon rider element - it was probably the easiest landing in recent memory. We suspect the enemy planned carefully for such a strategy and this proved to be the case. As is typical of your backwater traitor he plots and schemes, unaware that his plans are impotent before the power of His armies.

However such was the delivery of this lesson the enemy has no doubt learned his painful mistake. We expect progress to slow as we enter the mid plans of the war and the enemy better reacts to our movements and strategies. Graves has this well in hand though, and we are finding his strategies to be both bold and reasonable.

From personal perspectives we have both frequented the front lines and found the troops to be well motivated and eager to do battle. Some are readily competing with others for greater glory and the various regiments are working well together despite many fundamental differences. Perhaps in time such great endeavours as this may become more common place once word of this success gets out.

Tallarn Commander

"This Commissar Heinz of the Tallarn 23rd," began Commissar WarriorFish "have you met the man?"

Commissar Elmo slowly placed his Amesec back on to the table before leaning slowly back in the camp chair and looking steadily at him. "Only in passing" he replied. "He seems steady enough especially as he is attached to a Tallarn regiment and the 23rd at that."

"How so?"

"Well we both know how seriously the Tallarns take their support of the Ecclesiarchy and the Imperial Creed. It must not be an easy job for him. Also the 23rd are still stinging from the 'Debacle in Dallas' and the sentinel pilots are still hoping for a return to the old ways."

"Who knows, perhaps this campaign will see them back on the path to glory." WarriorFish commented with a sparkle in his eyes. "After all, we can always make sure they get the chance to try!"

The regiment will gather at 0400hrs for final briefing and benediction along with an address by the Commissariat.

Campaign Command cannot stress enough the importance of this mission as Strongpoint #203 is vital to the goal of retaking Lutum for The Emperor.

To this end, the Commissariat will be active in your area and will ensure that no one takes a step back before success.

The Emperor protects

+++ Message ends +++

The craven traitors of Lutum feared the mention of your regiment's arrival, that is an honour words can not adequately describe.

WarriorFish's single good eye appeared to be blazing into his very soul with unblinking fury. It was rumoured that his eye could strike a man dead as good as his bolt pistol, and the young officer could understand the sentiment.

"How could this happen? Where were the reports?"

"I don't-"

"That was a rhetorical question! Dismissed!" the commissar roared, pointing at the bunker door.

"Yessir!" the officer was glad to be sent away, for the Lord Commissar was not pleased and nobody needed telling that a displeased commissar was not good company to keep.

"Panzerjäger Company. We've not heard back from them, has to be," Elmo said, pointing at the last known location.

The Lord Commissar growled as he studied the map, knuckles pressed white against the interface.

"Curse those fools. By getting themselves killed they've let the enemy get to our exposed flank. They have no right inviting others to their grave of incompetence," he almost spat the words.

Elmo brought up further information on the identified enemy forces moving in, and the holding Imperials.

"It's... not looking good. This is a fair portion of the enemy's remaining armour. No small number of their elite troops too."

"So we are to send not relief, but instead vengeance? It'll be a day late, the enemy will likely have moved on by then," WarriorFish's eye darted across the map as he searched in vain for something to send in time, "who do we have holding?"

"242nd Ultramar, 7th Scansin and 1st Paradise predominantly," Elmo read from the list.

"They're infantry companies aren't they? Recuperating?"

"I'm afraid so. We've alerted them so they're digging in, but..." Elmo let the news speak for itself.

"Indeed. To think things were going so well, this could be a black mark on our final victory. We will have to pray to the Emperor for those soldiers. They're in His hands now."

Word around the command camp was that when Lord Commissar WarriorFish had heard that the defending infantry had not only repulsed the enemy attack but also destroyed or captured over half of their armour in the process he didn't stop smiling for a whole five minutes.

Phase 2 End

The roar of landing craft blotted out the discussion with a base hum which made equipment rattle and ears ache. In the command tent the senior officers were leaning over the planning table, the low glow of the display lighting their faces with a sickly green tint.

“The landings are progressing well. Nearly all of our troops have deployed with but a few exceptions and the heavy vehicles are being readied for the next phase.” Lord Commissar WarriorFish allowed his gaze to rove over the assembled officers before continuing,

“The scouts are moving towards their objectives and as strong points are discovered the Scions are being sent in to deal with them.”

Commissar Elmo let this information roll over him. As part of the planning staff he already knew the current situation and he was more interested in the gathered officers. All the units had sent a representative and even in the gloomy confines of the command tent the pride of those taking part was apparent.

The briefing was again interrupted, this time by the screech of Valkryies and Vendettas shuttling Scions forward.

“On all fronts the enemy is retreating before us. Gentlemen, the time is right to bring the might of our forces to bear and crush the traitor for once and all.” Heads nodded and murmurs of agreement where given. The traitor Luars must be brought to account for his actions. The Emperor had decreed it and so it would be.

“Your forces have performed admirably so far. Now is the moment of truth. You all know what is required of you and I am confident you will all succeed.”

A final scan of the faces told him all he needed to know, they where ready.

“Gentlemen, for The Emperor!”

With a roar the gathered officers replied “The Emperor!” and left to marshal their forces for the final attack.

"You know what I think?" WarriorFish's bolt pistol didn't stop barking as he strode purposefully forwards.

"Other than I don't see the front lines enough, of course," he chuckled, "no, not that. It's that things are always too noisy."

Ducking some heavy bolter fire he glanced up to see the position barraged with grenades instantly. He smiled.

"See what I mean? Too noisy. Can't hear yourself think, I'm not getting any younger either and the racket of war takes its tolls on the ears."

A flash of his blade put a wounded enemy out of his misery, the Commissar not breaking his step.

"That's why I like to branch out a bit. See the sights, those paths less trod. There's so much to see and experience and each one makes you a better servant. Knowledge is power, provided it is the correct side of ignorance naturally."

He paused to survey the battlefield. No, that wasn't the right term. This was more like a charnel house. Not the one the enemy had imagined when they had cleared no-man's land of cover though he was sure. He'd have been offended by the enemy underestimating them if it wasn't to his advantage.

"Sometimes it's just to get some peace and quiet, to spend time with those who also know their role in His grand scheme. Would you say the same?"

There was a pause before the answer.

"I fink we need ta kill dem more."

The Commissar nodded, pleased with the answer.

"Well said, Bone Head Gronk. Well said indeed."

He signalled for the shield wall to continue the advance, enemy weaponry bouncing harmlessly from their shields.

"Would that all understood the simplicity of duty and obedience so well," he smiled before waving some more Ogryns forwards, "all ripper squads, storm the trenches! Take the bunkers! You are not to stop until every enemy lies dead at your feet!"

The bellowing roar of the stampeding Ogryns felt like a special kind of music. The following piece made from the desperate screams of dying traitors was just as beautiful.

"Loyalty. Obedience. All without question. Emperor bless the mind too small for doubt..."

The Sentinels came bursting from the jungle night, catching the enemy convoy completely unaware as their weapons began spitting death without delay. This would have been bad enough, but they had already been pounced upon by the Jotunheim Panzergrenadiers and 711th Kasrkin. Caught between their fire it was a short but bloody battle, over in mere minutes.

"Command, objective complete. Enemy combatants destroyed and supplies captured. Send in the recovery teams."

The Stormtrooper commander left his men to secure the position and wandered over to the Sentinels, now dismounting for inspection. The hatch from one of the Sentinels popped open and a grinning, grubby face emerged.

"Turn up just in the nick of time again. If I didn't know better I'd say you've been waiting for the most dramatic moment." he holstered his pistol and rested his hand on his blade's scabbard.

"Well, you lot seemed to have it well in hand. Didn't want to deprive you of all the fun." came a winking reply.

"Indeed. I'll not complain though, better to arrive just in time than too late. All doing the Emperor's work. Our orders are to embark on our Chimeras and strike another convoy down the river about 34 miles south. Yours?"

The Sentinel commander scratched his head.

"Hmm. Well. Our orders are to search and destroy currently. Command knows how we work best, y'see. I had heard there was an armoured squadron or two west from here, thought we might go hunting for bigger quarry."

"I see. In that case, we'll see you in the nick of time or at the victory parade I presume?"

"Emperor's work is never done."

To this the Stormtrooper laughed.

"No, it never is. Emperor preserve you and your men. Kill well, and die better."

"Die? Not really our thing, but all the best to you glory boys," he before signalling his men to mount their walkers.

"Good hunting."

"I'd say see you at the parade, but they don't usually let us attend," he laughed before dropping and closing the hatch.

The Stormtrooper watched the walkers stalk back into the jungle growth. Sometimes, just a little, he wondered what it was like to be so free and undisciplined. The Emperor works in mysterious ways, but all work together for the greater purpose. What more evidence was needed than the ever growing success of the crusade to reclaim Lutum?

WarriorFish

Commissar WarriorFish cast his eyes proudly over the assembled units.  The 144th Arukan had done The Imperium of Man excellent service during the Lutum Campaign by providing forces at every stage of the deployment. Fathers Boeka and Guterun had helped breathe the fire of The Emperor Himself into the Arukani with their oratory even though it was rare to see them both in the same room at the same time such was their dislike of each other. WarriorFish raised an eyebrow with this thought. It was strange that two priests should be so diametrically opposed to each other but that was the way of the Imperium.

The Commissar next cast his eye on the hulking figure of Nork Deddog. It was not difficult to do as the ogryn towered above the other soldiers and they had also made a concious effort to leave space around Nork due to his unpleasant odour and habits. Even now the ogryn's finger was buried up to the knuckle in his nose searching for a particularly stubborn obstruction whilst humming some unrecognisable tune to himself.

Each of the 144th had proven themselves up to the task of freeing Lutum and there was not a soldier or an officer who had not done their duty, the gaps in the ranks and state of the uniforms and equipment gave evidence of this but the 144th would be ready next time The Emperor called and Commissar WarriorFish would advance into the thick of the fighting with them.

At his side, Lord Commander Firionel took a deep breath and gave the final order of the Lutum Campaign to his gathered soldiers.

"144th, under sub-commanders, to your duties, dismissed!"

"A thousand deaths before dishonour!" replied the troops before turning smartly to the right and marching to ready themselves for the next call to serve.

The fighting vehicles of the 711th still had the sand blasted weathering of the deserts they had seized in the opening months of the campaign when they rolled into the city for the final weeks. Block by block they captured building after building relentlessly, Lt Colonel Gett in full knowledge that the final assaults in the cramped confines of the hive meant that his Combined Arms Brigade had to claim as much glory as they could before others made the final assaults.

"There, fifth floor!" he bellowed.

The sniper realised he was compromised too late as battle cannons roared, sending part of the building's once ornate facing to fall from the shock waves. Without delay he waved the second and fourth squads forwards to consolidate.
"Street by street, now this is how Cadians fight!" he grinned.

Flamers ignited, sending cleansing promethium into the lower floors before being followed by well honed storming by Shocktroops. Lasgun fire cracked in a short firefight and once a soldier appeared from an upper floor window to signal he gave the advance order. Leman Russ and Chimera engines roared to life to press on to the next block.

"Very good Gett. Very good" a voice of approval said sternly.

Commissar Elmo hadn't moved from where he had planted himself when the engagement began - the middle of the road. There he had stood, bolt pistol holstered as a statement of his unyielding faith. Gett wasn't yet convinced if this was in his men or the God-Emperor, or perhaps the Commissar was just a lunatic.

"Still plenty more to be done yet, Commissar," Gett replied with a wave as his Chimera joined the advance.
"As the Emperor wills," Elmo nodded as he made his way at a casual pace to join, his quiet smile of supreme confidence in victory as constant as ever before.

Somehow Gett and his men found it reassuring.

Sire, Lutum has been captured for the Golden Throne as you predicted. The campaign went well and you will be delighted to hear that some regiments and accomplishments will warrant your further attention. In particular the 121st Alcari, commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Franklyn Donner. While of course they performed their duties to the God-Emperor well and you will find them a fine grenadier company; both mobile and aggressive in combat it is their less "direct" means that I believe will interest you the most.

Donner's skill in propaganda belies his demeanor on the battlefield, often having the enemy either in disarray due to confusion or depleted morale before his troops even strike - achieving victory quickly and with less loss of His resources in doing so. This is quite an accomplishment in no small ways, for prior to His glorious liberation crusade the heretics believed victory to be guaranteed. I can personally vouch for three occasions where I witnessed their work and I found it most impressive, I have attached my detailed reports for your perusal including a further seven times where I have good reason to believe his hand at play.

My further investigations indicate some existing involvement with His Holy Inquisition, so some negotiations will likely be necessary. As such it is my recommendation that this avenue be pursued at your earliest convenience as to generate access sooner.

Eternally in His and your service,

It was an odd thing, to see the Catachan of the CXLIX mixing with the Tallarn of the 23rd - for desert and jungle do not often mix. Yet here were two experienced commanders sitting and sharing a drink.

"Lord Commander, you do us much honour," Nemo smiled as he took a sip.

"It is nothing. I am glad to be on the front lines, I seem to be forever stuck behind a map or report it feels."

"Even so, to sit and share a civilised drink before we travel to battle. A fine thing."

"Well, maybe. Maybe so. Good to water before battle." Graves gestured towards the jungle behind him where his men had spent the last week.

"True, true. The desert is a harsh mistress," Nemo nodded at the sandy expanse behind him.

The two men sat quietly enjoying the recaf as their men finalised their preparations.

"So, on to Tore Saramu then?" Nemo stood as his men assembled for inspection.

"As planned, yes, we'll need to take it within two days in order for the 144th and 711th to move past and engage the enemy counter attack," Graves nodded as he stood to his own men's assembly.

"Have no fear Lord Commander, my Stormtroopers will breach their walls on the first charge," Nemo gave a small bow.

"Oh, no, I think you'll find it'll be the Catachan who take the walls first."

The two men looked at each other, neither even blinking.

"Very well. We shall see who the Emperor favours!"

The two commanders hurried off to mobilise their men - but not too hurriedly. You don't want to look like you're making too much of an effort after all.

Though each regiment would claim to have made the first breach history would record that such was the fury of their assaults that it was largely irrelevant.

"My lords, message from the front - sector BY98 has been cleansed and captured!" the young officer hurried over to the planning desk to hand over the data but Commissar Elmo waved him back to his duties. He tapped a few times on BY98 to record the new Imperial status of the sector.
"Not going to check? That's pretty damn quick, we only sent them in yesterday." WarriorFish cast a quick sideways glance.
"No need, that's the Life Guards."
Elmo gestured with his recaf cup and WarriorFish nodded.
"The Levallosians, under Prins wasn't it?"
"Colonel Prins, yes," Elmo waited for the water to boil, "their contribution was made to capture cities along with no small measure of skill at the task."
"Yes, of course, I remember now. Even had a psyker with them too."
"Indeed. I've heard impressive reports of their effectiveness and cohesion - even with the Ogryn Auxillia." he stirred the cups a little.
"Excellent, then we had better send them on immediately. We'll have another regiment secure BY98."
"Agreed, BY99?"
WarriorFish nodded as he took his cup, raising it slightly in thanks. He had heard of the Life Guard method of war and he knew it was no easy thing getting the most from the Auxillia, but the reports of reliance on psykers for strategic plans was not without concern. All very well if it gave victory, but something to keep a discreet eye on no doubt. For now though the 7th were a vital part of recapturing the outer hive and the Emperor does work in mysterious ways. Who was a servant to question His divine will?

nismogrendel

"Is it Lord or Lady Commissar if they're a woman?"

"What?"

"You know, for the title? Or doesn't it matter?"

Corporal Reed just shrugged and returned to cleaning his melta.

"Well, I just don't want to get it wrong you know? Be rude and that."

Reed ignored him. A few minutes of slightly awkward silence followed before Remfry silently emerged from the inky black of night.

"Right boys we're up. Orders are to infiltrate a promethium plant and either capture it or, if not possible, destroy it. Bridges Pegasus and Bellaphron are to be destroyed in that case, but preferably captured.

The veterans of Foxhound Company looked at each other.

"Is that all?" Reed frowned as he slung his melta over his shoulder.

"We've only got eight hours to do the lot."

Remfry's soldiers were packed and moving in under a minute. Capturing a promethium plant and two bridges? Anyone could do that, but in an eight hour time frame - now that was more like it.

__________

"Commissar Elmo sir, response from Lt Colonel Remfry: plant and bridges captured, awaiting new orders."

Elmo glanced at the time.

"Tell Remfry to use the remaining two hours to fortify and await the relief force. Send his Sentinels to fuel relay CF02 to perform recon, where he is to repeat the feat when he rendezvous with them."

"At once."

Elmo signalled another officer.

"Tell the 8th Jotunheim that their way is open to cross Pegasus. Their orders are to flatten Fortress Berghen and proceed to engage the enemy armour in sector CD34."

"Yes sir!"

The officer neatly stepped aside as WarriorFish's familiar shadow loomed through the doorway.

"What did I miss?" he remarked at the hurried activity.

"You're going to love this," Elmo grinned...

Ulrik Ironfist

Even the mighty Leman Russ battle tank looked like an insignificant insect from up here. He could see the plumes of dust rising from the planes as the 8th Jotunheim made their charge to Pegasus bridge. A spark from the traitor side saw a fresh, darker cloud start to form - another enemy tank knocked out by Vanquisher fire. Even as a pilot he knew it was folly to stray into Major Schroeder's sights.

Better hurry up, or there won't be anything left for me...

The Vulture's engines seemed to protest as he made for a steep dive. Plunging through the flak he released a couple of HKs into advancing enemy Chimeras before peeling off to search for more inviting targets.

_________

Marshal Hammet felt some satisfaction as he crossed the bridge. It was in good shape despite the fighting and would easily allow his armoured vehicles to cross. The littered corpses of the enemy and their armour was always gratifying no matter the planet.

"Tell that flyboy to move on to CD34, give us a bird's view," he gestured to the Vulture soaring overhead, still searching for something to shoot.

"Understood Marshal."

"All units, full speed! I'm already missing the action!" he roared, waving forwards to all who could see.

The enthusiastic cheering was music to his ears.

"Plenty more glory to be won on this dirt ball. Plenty more!"

He must have been grinning all the way to CD34.

Your selfless dedication to annihilating the heretic wherever he makes his nest has not gone unnoticed. Both by His Inquisition and surely the God-Emperor Himself. Such piety and duty must not be wasted.

Phase 3 End

The Palace once again shook violently as the latest Imperial ordnance struck home. Nyels was now very aware of the drawbacks to such a large and ostentatious building that he skipped over initially during the upgrade works. If only they had gone less grand... but there was no time to waste on hindsight. Scurrying through the cavernous halls, around the fallen masonry and reliefs he was soon thinking how lucky he to survive this long until it dawned on him that it was only too quiet. His wordless questions were answered when he heard the noise of Valkyrie engines roaring past. Could they possible be friendly, here to spirit him to safety?

The sound of hotshot weaponry searing through armour and flesh was most unwelcome, but sadly not a surprise. It was all very much over. The Governor's plans all for nought as the Imperials had smashed their way through every obstacle. Nyels turned to hurry back, spotting in the corner of his eye some of the Palace Guards attempting to flee down the corridor before being cut down by accurate gun fire. Only one, vain hope now. Cursing the Governor and praying to whoever would listen that his doom would be far worse than his own Nyels plunged through the doors to the Governor's suite, now hanging just barely from their hinges with the gold facings partially melted.

Hiding in the cramped panic room he could only cower in terror as the gunfire and cries of "For the Emperor!" died out, replaced by deathly silence for he didn't know how long. Then there was a dull thudding sound, followed by some more. Without warning the reinforced door exploded inwards, Imperial Stormtroopers instantly following with weapons raised. Nyels was glad he ate that Coben beef when he had the chance.

//--//URGENT//--//

//--//Ref: AOL-C-BR03//--//

It is with great pleasure that we report the successful recapture of Lutum in the Emperor's name. The victory can only be described as decisive in its entirety; the faith, courage and resolve of participating regiments is to be commended without reservation. Lord Commander (Colonel) Graves of the Catachan 149th is to be equally commended, his able leadership of the liberation campaign and sterling personal example to the men was no doubt instrumental in pushing His forces onwards to victory.

The hive city is in full Imperial control, traitor forces soundly beaten and the heretic Governor and his cronies given justice at the end of a barrel. Though a not insignificant portion of the enemy remains and much reconstruction work will be required this is nothing to be concerned with. Vital mining areas are well secured and the enemy forced to retreat to less favourable locations. We expect these minor issues to be resolved in a mere few local months, we ask that you inform the Techpriests of Stygies VIII that their materials will commence shipping immediately, and will return to full capacity soon.

We trust that His Inquisition finds this news most agreeable, and will send the promised aid to help scour the remains of heresy that no doubt infect the planet. We are confident that the projected estimate of full rehabilitation within a decade to be more than ample time.

In His service,

WarriorFish,

Elmo

The assembled regiments would later be recorded as the most in one place and the largest battle during the liberation of Lutum. Soldiers from the 144th Arukan, 1st Vidarian and the 49th Cadian stood shoulder to shoulder. Commanders of the 711th Cadian, Tallarn 23rd and the 189th Tebessan mingled as they organised the battle. All under the careful eye of Lord Commander Graves and his attending command structure.

"This is the day, soldiers of the Emperor!" Grave's voice needed no amplification, but it was provided anyway, "This is the day that history will record the Crusade for Lutum was won!"

He let his words roll over the assembled soldiers, some stopping to pay attention, others still busy with last minute preparations.

"The enemy gathers all that he can in one last, desperate attempt to turn the war in his favour. This is folly! This is foolishness!"

Priests from various regiments made their way through the defensive lines, chanting their own litanies and blessings in their various ways and tongues.

"Here, in the plains of Torruk, history will remember their mistake! In this battle we crush the enemy! Let him come, only death awaits!"

Final blessings were given to the entrenched Leman Russ tanks, heavy weapons were checked one last time.

"I need not ask you for victory. I know that you will provide. With victory here our road opens to the hive. This inevitable success will pave the way to ultimate victory! This war is ours!"

The assembled warriors cheered in response to Grave's final flourish. Even across the various languages the meaning was the same. To this Graves turned, eager to get himself to the front before the enemy arrived. The two Commissars flanking him during his speech stepped aside, their unblinking gazes not detaching from the horizon where the enemy would soon arrive.

"I'll give you your battle, black coats," Graves smiled as he walked passed - waiting to be out of sight before hurrying to the front.

"The Emperor has already decreed it, Lord Commander. Faith is all that is required now," came a matter of fact reply.

Faith? Yes, and plenty of guns to back it up... he thought.

Lord Commander - 3 phases completed and highest completed points

gallery_30308_9518_3037.png

Brazentooth

The Colonel - no, Lord Commander - stood quietly atop the rubble, his infamous hard gaze leisurely strolling over the battle ground. Hot lasgun fire criss-crossed through the air, sizzling quietly as if intimidated by his presence. Wordlessly he pointed towards a partially collapsed building before placing his hands on his hips.

"Orders?" the Lieutenant recognised Grave's demeanour as welcoming of questions.

"The war's won, just got these grox-sniffers to weed out. The men have it well in hand."

The screams of some of the defenders punctuated his point as some Catachans ferreted them out with blade and bayonet. A moment of silence followed before mortar shells dropped on the collapsed building sending flaming chunks of flesh and ferrocrete into the air. Graves smiled. Silence now, no lasguns or heavy bolters - just the trudging of boots searching for survivors.

"What did the commissariat say about the Governor again?" Graves mused as he studied some of the rubble ahead of him.

"They asked for his head. Lord Commissar promised a cask of his finest meid."

Graves grunted as he nodded, lips pursed in thought. "Those were the exact words?"

The Lieutenant nodded.

"Just as well," the Lord Commander said as he gestured towards the rubble, "because I don't think we'll find the rest of him."

Graves turned to walk back down the rubble hill of the ruined palace, his officer stepping up to retrieve the trophy.

"Never had me some meid before." Graves muttered as he boarded his personal Valkyrie. He was looking forward to seeing how it tasted.

Lord Commander Graves, by taking up the prestigious title of Lord Commander of the Campaign you made a mighty pledge that all could witness. This was a statement of faith in the regiments under your command as well as your own abilities. The history records will record that this faith was not misplaced. In years to come your statue as the Great Liberator of Lutum would become a pilgrimage site for all who wished to atone for their forebear's heresy against the Golden Throne.

//--[[OFFICIAL]]--//--//TOP SECRET//

Further to previous reports, while the recapture of Lutum was of course a notable success not all regiments performed as expected. The following failed in their duty, the reasons why are irrelevant before the Golden Throne:

710th Cadian Mechanised under Colonel Caelia Vandar

The 710th may have been victim of their own eagerness. Early progress left them isolated as they pushed ahead of the main lines, leaving them exposed. Lord Commander Graves had little choice but to rush reinforcements to prevent their destruction. This was a worthwhile effort for while the 710th were so reduced as to be unable to participate further they were at least saved as to have chance to redeem themselves in the future.

Commissariat recommendation: Colonel Vandar should be assigned to Tactica Re-education Classes, it is our view that she may have been promoted too soon.

83rd Horst Regiment under Major Hektor Ozhil

The 83rd's contribution to the war effort was minor and ultimately unsatisfactory, achieving none of their objectives without support. The Major will do well to remember this in future campaigns if he intends to be remain in command.

Commissariat recommendation: the 83rd should be submitted to a battle without delay so they may prove their mettle.

68th Imperial Navy Tactical Wing under Junior Ensign Fyodor Cradis

The failure of the 68th to deliver much needed aerial support is disappointing. Claims of mismanagement and poor use of Munitorum supplies are rife and not tolerable.

Commissariat recommendation: these rumours of mismanagement should be investigated and appropriate summary executions carried out.

Ancarthian 1st under Colonel Tiberius Macharius

Unfortunately the Colonel was not of the same calibre as his namesake, the 1st suffered heavy casualties during the middle phases of the war and withdrew.

Commissariat recommendation: the name of Ancarthian has been sullied on Lutum, and their future engagements will be watched with a close eye.

Panzerjäger Company Gamma (2nd Recon Battalion) under Captain Philip Jyghon

Company Gamma failed in their duty to the Emperor and to their comrades-in-arms. This dishonour will not soon be forgotten by those who had relied on their aid.

Commissariat recommendation: the entire Company command structure must be replaced and training from the ground up implemented without delay.

87th Vostroyan Imperial Militia under Commander Drazyk Vanalia

High Command was initially eager to hear of the support of the Vostroyans, the arrival of a mere militia is still being investigated. Their performance on the fields of Lutum can best be described as "fitting for militia".

Commissariat recommendation: those responsible for sending inferior forces should be executed without trial.

56th Artemisian Enterians under Colonel brother Mortis iron hand

The 56th suffered heavy casualties in the siege of the hive city, achieving little in the process. While this can be the nature of city assaults it remains to be seen if this was due to the Artemisian's own failings.

Commissariat recommendation: once returned to fighting strength the 56th should be immediately sent into battle, that the fires of war may forge or break them.

The Commissariat is good but not perfect in our service to The Emperor. ;)

Alas I ran out of Likes! A most enjoyable read to see peoples efforts rewarded in fluff :)

A hearty well done to the Commissariat on the Lutum campaign, I might not have participated but I greatly enjoyed following it and of course this, the final payoff of all that hard work. I'm sure we'll see another sometime in the future!

Ran out of likes halfway. The reading was enjoyable, the campaign as well. When do we got another one ?

Now that Lutum is conquered and all the cowards and traitors are purged, the Guard is ready to win this year's ETL (along with its Imperial allies, of course...) !

Thanks for the comments so far. It has been a bit of a task to get the stories together around real life and it is nice to hear that they have been enjoyable to read... after all that is what we where hoping for :)

Lets get the ETL out of the way first but the initial planning for Campaign II will be getting underway in the near future.

There were unfortunately some real life concerns that interfered, so we didn't get to do quite as much as we wanted when we planned to but that all means improvements to be made next time :) As Commissar Elmo says another Campaign will come if people want it but first there's the ETL and some models to paint ;)

I actually just realized what a gift GW's given us - finally, we as Inquisition players have a way to denounce each other as Radicals and Puritans for our army selection philosophies! #meta
