The bloodofkittens version looks like someone was trying to optimize around the measuring from the weapon rules of older editions.

The original design with 4 independent sponsons looks more… reasonable, to me at least. If this was the question.

What third hull are you speaking of?

And in general, what is your view of this Ultramarines-specific tank in a non-ultra army, even painted in not blue?

only Lord of War we have that is worth it and not relic. I hope it will lose UM specific rules for it. I used one in previous editions in my CF so i think they should still be allowed to all marine forces....My Primaris IF will get one

@Kua - I agree, the design was built for another edition when weapon placement mattered.  Now that is basically doesn't, then I have a chance to get my snowflake on ... or should I?  Earlier in the thread, I revealed how I found a Land Raider hull in a box which I got from a swap many years ago and forgot about.  This find allows me to make a Terminus Ultra :tu:  On that topic, I don't have a problem with using non-RG war machines for the Raven Guard.  I mean ... why not?

Frankly, I think it's goofy that Chapter-specific items exist.  I mean, I get it from a business perspective.  But from a fluff perspective, I don't buy the discussion that only the Ultramarines would field a Terminus Ultra for ... reasons.

@war009 - I know, right?  There is something sinister looking in the original design.  With this third hull I could *gasp* dedicate it to the LoW!

@Bjorn - That's the rub, I like the tri-las look, but I am not a fan of conversions.  If I used stock weapons then I could still magnetize them and use them on other hulls as needed.  BUT, the quad-las is a crazy alternative I had not thought about.  I would need the Kromech weapons posted on a previous page for sure because 1) not a conversion, 2) allows me to save the parts for other hulls as mentioned to war009, and 3) snowflake.

Here' the thing, this is only possible with the current Keyword system.  If the Codex changes that, then it's likely this would only be made because I just don't give a :cuss

On chapter-specific items:

If it was some Ultra techmarine who made the modifications by hand on a few LRs, it’s totally reasonable to me if they are Ultra-specific. They’d have to become as successful as the BT’s LR Crusader to spread to other chapters first.

On quad lascannons: Isn’t there a FW LR using them?

You're thinking of the Spartan Assault Tank. The vehicle was named the "Land Raider Spartan" in older editions of the game, but when Forge World recreated it for 'The Horus Heresy', the company chose to make it a different vehicle altogether.

@Dos - it's a good look, yes? I mean, that would be neat. Don't forget, the Prometheus has a quad HB sponson ;)

@Kua - I suppose so. Yet, is that the same argument for the Baal Predator or Nephilim?

@C&E - which, btw, looks cool to me! Can't wait to see color on that. I'm torn to actually using that loadout on a Razorback, even though I'm a huge fan of Assault Cannons. I'm wondering why I decided to look around now ...

@Bjorn - yep. Here's the thing, which adds to Dos's note, the quad LC sponson is best left on my Spartan idea from some pages back, I think.

Meanwhile, I worked on my Tactical Squad today ^_^. I'm thinking Storm Bolter on the Sergeant and a Plasma gun, just to keep up with the Jones'

Why not?

If the other chapter’s tactics don’t need the thing seriously enough to go begging for it of some winged lunatics…

Yeah, the more I look at that turret the more I like it.

I did the lascannon turret that it comes with as well, just so I have some options.

I'm also looking into a LSS hull so I can make an attempt at a Whispercutter conversion using the rest of the Stormraven hull my Fire Raptor came with.

I've been using them since they were created and I'm not going to stop.

There are detachments that let you use it in any <Imperium> or the Astartes version, so no reason to let the blue get in the way.

Yep. Globally it should be kosher with keywords. But the Codex may wrinkle it.

Honda's more above reminded me that his post in the "post your tanks" thread in the Forge inspired me to seriously consider going for my own TU (and Prometheus). Finding the hull made that idea very real.

SO, I did some stuff. Next up:

Tactical Squad 6

A Demi-Squad where the Sergeant has a chainsword and Storm Bolter, and the specialist has the Melta gun. I also decided to (finally) use the Tigurus and Phobos bolter bitz I bought many Many MANY years ago, as in before the current Tactcical Squad sprue. I also decided to (finall) use the Red Scorpion chest piece bought before the bolters ().

So, why the Storm Bolter and chainsword? With this edition, why not?! The SB is a cheap upgrade to the bolter and reasonably effective. "But Race, why not use a Combi-weapon? Everyone else is doing it!" Exactly. Sure, I'll keep up with the Guilliman's for several things, but Sergeant loadout is one of the more personal aspects of the game to me. It's a weird thing in my head I think. And he gets +1 attack to boot, just in case ;)

Why the Melta gun when the Plasma gun seems to be the cat's meow in this edition? Squad 2 (post 62), already has one. The Melta gun is also a personal favorite anyway. Interestingly, the Sergeant for Squad 2 also has a Storm Bolter :wacko.: So, did I just make myself a hypocrite in the same post?! Sorta, except that dude doesn't have a sword. Aha, there you go, I win the internet.

Now then, the Melta gun dude is sporting a Deathwatch shoulder pad. Besides the fact I have a LOT of these things lying around, I thought it would be cool the specialist gunner have some background. Simply put, he's returned from the Deathwatch and has been given a powerful weapon. If there is someone in Squad 6 that knows where to put a shot, it's this guy.

The Sergeant does not have the white helmet because I wanted to try something different. Clearly, the wreath on the helmet is painted white to show his leadership status (not that his weapons wouldn't do the same). Then, as I was gathering parts, I found the Terminator Crux pad and decided this Sergeant was veteran enough to have earned the honor. Who knows, maybe he is close to promotion to the venerable 1st Co? OR, mabe he IS from the 1st! Oh yeah, his squad got wiped out except for him. A man without a squad, he volunteered to join the 5th Battle Company to fill a needed replacement slot. He has carried with him his trusted Storm Bolter named "Vengetus". Neat ^_^

What I love and respect most about this squad (and your thread all together) is that you're not outfitting them to be the "best" by flooding them with the go-to weapons, but instead opting to give them character and diversity. Lately I've been thinking on what to buy weapon wise, and often wonder if I be should arming them with what's best... but every time it's "Nah, 'x' weapons are so much cooler than 'y' weapons."

Thank you ^_^

You may have noticed this, but a lot (if not all) "which is best" threads have opinions across the spectrum.  There may be a general theme (Plasma gun's are awesome!), but someone will be the contrarian and say, "Melta guns are more awesome and here's why based on my experience".

If I could give any counsel from my own thread: read what is being said about that thing, but settle on what you want to use.  Besides, you could proxy the thing to try it out before you build it ^_^

Yea I've been looking on forgeworld to see what heavy weapon set I should buy for a Devastator unit (I have enough bits to put a 10x squad together, but no heavy weapons). I look at the plasma and lascannons, knowing them to be the best bet. Also at the Legion heavy weapon set, but I really dislike the over the shoulder mounted weapons. Then I look at the auto cannons and rotary cannons and think to myself "those would look awesome". Maybe i'll just collect a bunch of bits and work from there to mix and match a unit. The only thing I don't like the look of is the 40k variant of the lascannon, preferring the ones carried like heavy bolters. Time will tell.

@SanguinaryGuardsman - Yep.  These are Testors brand White sheets and using a :cuss :cuss :cuss inkjet printer.  The image is from B+C's Carlson793's file in the Downloads section.  The image is just a wee bit bigger than the FW transfer pic.  I mean, ever so slightly bigger.  "But Race, why not just buy FW's sheet?  It's high quality and you get so much at a great price!"  Well, DIY sheets are cheaper in the long run and I get more of what I need.  Also, the FW sheet has A LOT of 30K stuff I will never use.  So, the cost per image on the decal sheet actually rises.  Or something like that.  I also use his work for the squad numbers not found on GW transfer sheet (1, 9, 10, etc.)

@Bedouin2 - Good luck on your hunt!  My stint with FW is done after this round

@war009 - Thank you ^_^

  • 3 weeks later...

As seen in the Hidden Hands of the Emperor event ...

Dreadnought 3

"But Race, the arms are black?! Are not Dreadnought dudes supposed to be veterans of the Chapter?" Yes, I suppose so. But in my head, the occupant was a humble battle line soldier who performed a stunningly heroic act for the Chapter, Emperor and galaxy that Shadow Santus determined his broken body would be interred into a holy sarcophagus. His deed was placed onto a protected parchment at his left leg where the Dreadnought number would typically be. ^_^ The Chapter sigil is a brass etch from FW.

I had a FW Plasma Cannon from many years ago and decided now was a good time to use it. It's a decent weapon in the edition so why not put it on a Dreadnought? It's magnetized.

The Chainfist arm is made of metal. Oh yeah, it's THAT OLD. Many MANY years ago, I selfishly destroyed a super-rare Adeptus Titanicus chainfist piece to make a snowflake Dreadnought Close Combat Weapon. Oh, if only I could have known GW would make a plastic Chainfist for Dreadnoughts ...

As with all my vehicles, the Company number "V" had to be placed somewhere. If you recall from my Venerable Dreadnought, the Company designation was placed on the arms, here it is on the hull. Frankly, this is make decal placement efficient as the arm studs are magnetized, this model needs to be highly customizable. Besides, I kind of like it's placement and may do the same for the Ironclad (when I get to that beast).
