Well, the other thing is that you could use the robes to denote their status rather than armour colour: green for companies 3-9, black for 2nd company, and crisp white for the 1st company - all over the same bone-coloured armour throughout the Chapter.

Ultimately, there's not all that many official sources of the successors full colours, so you do have some artistic licence to make them fit as you like. :)

Agreed

That's actually a great idea if you can't decide for a single colour.

Thank you everyone for helping me out here, it's greatly appreciated. Lots of great input and out of the box thinking. The pro/ con of a successor chapter is the artistic license. On the one hand you guys are right, there's so little canon. But I also feel the Unforgiven has so much tradition and custom, I'm compelled to stick to it as much as possible

@Syphid: I did a test last night of the red casing/ green robe. I totally see what you mean about greater contrast. I'm just not sure it's for me. My style of painting I think I'll have a hard time getting away from the festive feel

@GRC: thanks for taking the time to do a Google search! Yea Google and I are good buddies these days. And that marine is always the first image to come up

@Major: I really think you might be on to something with that last post. I like the idea of 3-9 companies having green robes, and the 1st and 2nd being different. I'm not sure I'm feeling the white robes though. I think black would be more fitting the 1st, with them carrying the burden of their knowledge.

I think I'll mess around with the interactive painter today. But right now I'm leaning towards black casings, green robes for 3-9, black for 1st and 2nd, and the red stripes on the helmet and casings for the 1st like we see from Siege of Vraks

If you're going to stay with black casings, you could always try the 1st Co in dark red robes instead perhaps? They would certainly look very striking and knightly that way, and also provide an immediate visual difference from the 2nd Co.

With regard to the white robes, xnickbananx did these a while back:

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-aDUpiqyIiIw/UD5sBbgsSRI/AAAAAAAAAmE/gEdG7tBPrVI/s1600/IMG_1683%5B1%5D.JPG

Personally I think they looked very good!

I also think that if you go with coloured robes, you might want to use a similar philosophy for the specialists (Librarian, Chaplain, Techmarine), and maybe just paint their right arm/shoulder/head in the traditional colours - leaving the rest in bone armour. You can then use the coloured robes to denote their level if appropriate (Techmarines probably wouldn't get robes at all though). Reducing the specialists' colours to these smaller areas also helps to avoid too much colour-clash with the robes and the rest of the army.

Finally, if you do go with white robes for the 1st Co, they happen to look pretty good (as well as being fluffy) on the Chaplain's black and Librarian's blue. :P

Very interesting concepts here, especially the minimalist concept for the specialists. I'd never even remotely considered that. Again, that's a matter of me wrapping my head around breaking the mold. You've definitely given me a lot to think about, it's no longer just the green/ black robe debate!

Do whatever feels good!  The great thing about 40k is that you can make any variations you like.  It took me a while to get past the candycane marine look.  Gotta darken the reds and greens for sure.

Ah Syphid no!!! Why must you tempt me with red casings? And especially from a renowned AoA player such as yourself.

Aw shucks :wub.:

Wow!  Has anybody bought from this guy before and can comment on the scale of the shoulderpads compared to regular GW ones?

Brother Arkley has ordered some.

Edit: It seems that Chmur has used those pads already. He said that they are the same size. Take a look.

Well, after some furious painting, Im proud to say Ive completed my first unit of anything in over 2 years! No, my vow isn't complete, but its halfway there at least. Now that Ive ironed out a few issues, I should be making good headway wtih the rest of this vow

med_gallery_71758_11985_4413.jpg

med_gallery_71758_11985_19226.jpg

I still have some finishing up to do, namely the chapter/ company/ unit symbols. But Im still undecided if I want to freehand or go with decals.

My sergeant here is my first attempt at blood and gore since Ive stumbled upon a new formula. Im hoping I didnt go overboard,
med_gallery_71758_11985_72197.jpgmed_gallery_71758_11985_12421.jpg

Along with the gore, this squad has my first ever attempts at OSL. Man, that is a lot trickier to pull off than I ever thought. I still need more practice

So hopefully in the next couple weeks my first vow will be done. My 10 terminators are all built now, just need to be based for my 2nd vow. Ive sorted out the robes issue. In the end, there were so many good ideas from my brothers on here, Ive decided to go with a number of them. I went back to Syphid's suggestion of red bolters and I ended up loving it. Major Gilbear, I thought heavily on your idea of colour coordinating the companies. Green for the battle companies, black for the 2nd, and pure white robes for the 1st/ inner circle. And Brother Arkley, when the time comes, Ill be going with deep red inner robes, hopefully itll help unify everyone. Thanks again for all the help with that issue

C&C always welcome

Edit: Also, how do I make the images bigger? My pics are so small...

Syphid: Thanks for the kind words! I had all the casings painted black, but I just wasn't happy with them. So I went for it, painted them all up red, and you were right, it really makes the models pop

Major Gilbear: Great suggestion on the press moulds. I'm going to try out free hand on one of my test subjects, and see how well it goes and how long it takes.

GRC: Thanks man! It's reactions like that that'll keep me pressing on!

I like the blue highlighting. They make me think of them being ghost marines! Great detail work all around. The should pads stand out as being well done! Your ork stomper is kick ass!

Thanks Epher. If you like the sergeant, hopefully you'll enjoy the assault squad I'm working on

Did you actually drill out all the holes in the flamer's barrel shroud? That's some dedication, looking good.

Yea... Yea I really did. I figure I'm already hacking the models up and putting in spacers and greenstuff, what's a few more drilled holes? Though I don't know if it's dedication, or insanity

Im about a week behind where I wanted to be, and with last nights plumbing issues Im a day later posting my latest. But Im now happy to say my second tactical squad and chaplain are now finally done. Which also means my first ETL vow is complete, and I can carry on with me second vow

med_gallery_71758_11985_41031.jpgmed_gallery_71758_11985_73748.jpg

Sorry about the poor lighting, I think my light is on its way out
med_gallery_71758_11985_19318.jpg

And my first Chaplain, still unnamed. Im not 100% happy with him. I went with a gray undertone to his robes, and I think I shouldve gone with my gut and stuck with a cream undertone. There are a few other niggling details that bother me, but theyll have to wait till the ETL is done, or Ill never finish :sad.:

And I might as well through up my next units while Im updating

med_gallery_71758_11985_26397.jpg

My tactical terminators
med_gallery_71758_11985_4303.jpg
As you can see, they came loaded for a fight as well. One of them is even in the midst of reloading
med_gallery_71758_11985_47533.jpg

And my thundernators, getting all smashy with some unfortunate orks

Thanks guys!! The TDA was tricky to figure out, especially the spare ammo. I'm glad you guys like them. I was going to do more of a write up last night about them, but I was just beat from figuring out the burst pipe in my basement

I've always felt the terminators don't represent well the 2+ save they have. Largely the legs just feel too slim to me, so I bulked them up. My original plan was to add more plating to them, especially around the groin, but in the end it was too much and they were bordering on Centurions, and that just won't do for the Unforgiven. I'm still thinking about bulking up there torsos a bit, but I'm on the fence with that.

I added a bit of height to the waist and the upper thighs, but that's it. I'm not a fan of the truescale TDA that borders on dreadnought height. It's still a marine in there after all.

There'll be no shortage of rounds in this army.

I did notice you gave all your DW drum mags! This rather tickled me, as I've gone out of my way to give all my DW dual sickle mags. :laugh.:

(Although I did it because the "old school" nod to the RT and Jes Goodwin Terminator models was hard to resist, and because I felt it was the pattern of relic-gun the DA would have in their armouries ;) )

That's too funny Major! You're absolutely right, dual sickles is the old school way, and a very unique look for stormbolters.

The decision to go drum was purely for practicality reasons. Reloading 2 sickle mags is more time consuming. Drums would carry lots of ammo, and are easier to swap out. Plus, I found it handy that lots of Ork shootas are perfectly sized and shaped for drums, and I have tons of spares to cut up! Jut need to add a bit of greenstuff to tone down the Xenos feel
