That is really coming along beautifully! The pose is dramatic, good thinking.

Hopefully I've not managed to get it wrong during the planning and testing phase, I was sure I had it right but last time I tried to fit it together I was not co-operative.

Anyway I've been a little sidetracked introducing my daughter to Age of Sigmar, but today was an opportunity to do my own hobby. Been working on the forelimb impaling the guardsman.

The eagle-eyed and keen memoried among you may realise that the guardsman is from the same unit as the victim on the Maulerfiends's base. Sadly TinyPic is no longer an option and I am yet to update my images, so if you want to check you should visit my Instagram. (Link in Sig)

So I got the rest of the limbs to the pre-assembly stage:

gallery_62155_11151_163396.jpg

Best up I've started on the main body, I'm doing this by taking small areas of trim through the highlighting stages one at a time to try and stop it becoming overwhelming/tedious.

First up one leg and the side of a head not even a master of possession could love.

A fun session tonight on what will become a massive Larson Sacrum.

That's one side done apart from the exhausts, which I will be doing with heat staining and will be a bit darker in tone than the rest and the spike rack down the middle.

I need to do all the bits of hose and stuff too, but all in good time.

I made more progress, got the other side of the head, tendrils and fore leg done, in my head there are about half a dozen sections of metal trim to do, including the back crest of spikes and the exhausts - although those will require the additional steps of being heat stained.

Other things to do will include the sections of inner glow, hoses, bruising up the flesh and goring up the rents in it, eye lenses, teeth, skulls and so on. And that's without the extra runes and other assorted iconography. Maybe a mont to six weeks of work I reckon.

So I decided to assemble what I had (after doing a bit more on the base) in part to stop me rubbing any paint of the sub assemblies as I painted the last touches. Putting it together was a fiddly nightmare, partly due to glue going stale and goopy, partly because making it go together was just difficult!

That being said, now that it is assembled I can start to see my vision coming together and it feels like the hard work is paying off. I have now actually cut the cannons of the sprue and undercoated them which I hadn't bothered with up until now so they will probably be what I work on next.

Let me know what you think!

Lots of photos coming - first zoomed out, then zoomed in!

Ok, so I'm not sure that the segregation of the heretic Astartes forum is working for the blog, but also I know that a lot of picture that should be part of this are no longer hosted and I will try and find an opportunity to fix that.

In the meantime here's what I've done with the Venomcrawler, as soon as I did the initial highlights on this daemonic face I was thinking this has to be a latros sacrum - the flaming Daemon skull emblem of the Word Bearers.

So here goes - I will still be finishing the highlights on the metals and doing the teeth so it's not finished yet but I like where it's going.

Finished! I was adding the scripture and runes and had originally planned to do lots more before realising that less was more. I've borrowed the mortal Realms battle mat for the photos and may yet take some better DSLR shots in the future. But for now I can call my first model of 2020 complete!

An outstanding model with superb attention to detail. I'll have to try out some things like the glyphs and the scorch marks on my Chaos scenery and Chaos Marines.

Thanks TC! The scorch marks are just a stipple/heavy dry brush of abaddon black and then I washed the general area with either reikland fleshshade or agrax earthshade maybe a bit of both, it looks a bit more striking in the photos than it does in the flesh.

  • 2 weeks later...

Dear not faithful readers for I have not abandoned you! I may have been neglecting to upload progress to the plot but I have been continuing to work on the Host. Specifically I have returned to the former Ashen Circle Khornate Raptor squad that I started last year. To try and speed up my progress I have been batch painting a trio of them. Here are some step by step and then single shots of my current progress.

gallery_62155_11151_428104.jpg

This was the initial blocking in of the red.

gallery_62155_11151_199545.jpg

And here is the red finished.

gallery_62155_11151_379208.jpg

I then basecoated all brass areas and bone and flesh parts - this has some early stages of the brass done

gallery_62155_11151_159688.jpg

This is the latest level of progress - badass done and the main bulk of the flesh done, there is room for more details on the flesh that will be added in due course.

Individual shots:

gallery_62155_11151_307885.jpg

So that's the progress on those three and I will keep going.

I have also obtained a trio of Cawdor ganger models to use as the basis for some dark disciples for my warlord I plan to have one of them carrying a banner that I wrote about for an inspirational Friday post some time ago. I'm looking forward to this modelling project and have been raiding bits boxes for appropriate parts.

gallery_62155_11151_655397.jpg

Incidentally thanks to the global events it looks like my aim of getting stuff done by the start of the cricket season, which was optimistic when I made it is now looking more straightforward, as much as a pity as that is.

Alright my building itch needed scratching so there's no painting update, instead I need some help deciding where to go with my first disciple:

Help me pick a route for the banner...

A) marauder banner: pros: easy, looks passable, no need to find flag cons: scale and definition clearly differ, and I kinda want the flag blowing sideways...

gallery_62155_11151_220188.jpg

B) old Skeleton warriors piece I think pros: bones are kinda cool, size seems okish cons: still have to sculpt or find a flag, want flag sideways.

gallery_62155_11151_268085.jpg

C) master of possession staff head: pros: looks sweet, modern bits with modern levels of definition work well together. Cons: still need flag, uses up sweet bit albeit in sweet way.

gallery_62155_11151_23611.jpg

Finally D) zombie cross piece pros) quite morbid cons: need flag, prefer sideways, would need more detail on construction method.

gallery_62155_11151_10960.jpg

My current preference is C. I'd appreciate input to help me decide.

OK so here's how I've got on:

gallery_62155_11151_118014.jpg

gallery_62155_11151_323477.jpg

As you can see I've gone with the option of the part from the Master of Posession's staff, and then sculpting a banner. Plan is to add stitches across the seams between the parts, possibly make the edges more ragged. Then paint it as flesh, possibly with some designs over the top.

Also made some progress on his buddy:

gallery_62155_11151_18308.jpg

Just on a temporary base for the time being and much less involved, I think he's ok, not really sure what else to do with him, although I do plan to round out the edge of the mantle rather than the square cuts.

Nice. Yes, the GS flag with MoP staff is very characterful. And if you make the banner look like flesh you could write up some backstory about how he used to be a Night Lord. :)

Night Lords don't have a monopoly on using flesh for banners... There's a piece I wrote for an inspirational Friday explaining how each of the aspiring champions and leaders of my host is bound to an icon, this is a representation of that of the dark apostle himself.

Anyway here's current progress on detailing it up:

gallery_62155_11151_454342.jpg

And here's how I'm getting on with the raptors, most of the trim is done now just need final highlights and then bone and other details. For the longest time I had the idea for this unit, then I gathered the bits and had a great time assembling it, now I come to paint it, not so much, ah well, I'll get there.

gallery_62155_11151_73635.jpg

gallery_62155_11151_116794.jpg

I'll press on as I want to get on with their leader...
