Getting started with PBP-RPG?

Hi PBP-RPGers,

 

I read the announcement and thought: "Hey! Cool! I used to RP on forums and had a great time of it!"

 

But coming here, it is more intense than that, with proper rulebooks, dice rolling, etc. To help those like me who are interested but overwhelmed, I was thinking it might be a good idea to put a little bit of "what you need to know to get started"?

This forum has more than enough space to accomodate different players and games of different stripes. Whilst Dosjetka's game is fully rules-based, using Dark Heresy first edition, my game is 100% narrative. There's a whole spectrum between roll-playing and role-playing. 

 

If you're interested in joining (or starting) a game, then get started!

Most games will be run using one of the rpgs released by fantasy flight games. But as Commissar Molotov said, games can be fully narrative as well and anything in between. The key is to be clear what style of game you want when creating the thread, what resources players should have access to, and what expectations there with frequency of posting, GM assuming actions that players take if one player hasn't posted in a reasonable time frame.

Guess ill post here rather than create a new thread.

 

Ive never done pbp before but am interested in starting, especially after reading some of the games already starting up in this thread. Really leaning towards DW as I purchased the majority of FFG books during their autumn sale. Few questions:

 

-How difficult would this system be for someone who's never played in person?

-How much reading of the rules should I do beforehand so Im not messing up the experience for other players?

 

Both time and enthusiasm wouldn't be a problem. I just don't want to be a hindrance for other players.

Depends on how Rules-heavy you want your game to be!

 

If you are going more narrative, then the only parts you need to read are about the setting, archetypes, and relative power of gear and equipment.  You can skim the mechanics to get an idea of what is possible for a member of the Deathwatch that is reasonable in your setting.  

 

If you are going more traditional, than you will want to be familiar with all the rules and ready to use them.
