Dont-Be-Haten Posted May 20, 2016 Share Posted May 20, 2016 (edited) Hey Guys, instead of flooding BA Today with how I paint my Carmine Blades helmets (Or white in general) *I thought I'd make this simple thread to kind of show my process. I know a lot of people don't like the Citadel Lines, or brushes but I personally do, and have enjoyed a lot of usage out of these few things. Always remember to take your time, be as neat as possible, and don't get discouraged. Thinned down paint can always have extra layers added versus gloupy thick amounts of paint.*Disclaimer, I am NO Golden Daemon painter. This is from one average painter to another, and my goal is to to help with the all tricky white. It isn't perfect by any means, but I feel it gives someone the easiest steps to painting up to white (without an airbrush, or hours of layering)To start off with I use two brushes.http://i1190.photobucket.com/albums/z460/Dont-be-Haten/painting/466FC2D2-CB62-440A-B1A1-C37962D3B187_zpsojokmmta.jpgThere are two simple methods to do this type of paint style, I have attempted both, but because I'm on a hobby budget, I haven't opted for the easier of the two methods simply because I have loads of Chaos Black Primer and no Corax white, but I will definitely be investing in some the next go round of needing any primer. So if you're looking for something small like helmets or wings the method I'm going to show you will suffice. If you're looking at a larger surface I would recommend priming Corax white, with 1 layer of Ulthuan Grey, followed by an either Nuln Oil or Agrax Earthshade wash with a fine detail brush. I barely tip the edge of the brush in the water, to base the helmet. These group of helmets took about forty-five minutes to an hour or so to do this morning. I spent more time drinking coffee and editing this than actually painting. But I can not reiterate how important it is to keep a steady hand, take your time, and have as much control as possible. This isn't 100% complete by my standards, but I've only got a few things left on it. I really hope this helped you other average joe painters like me. I shake like a leaf in the wind (always thought it was to do with Canada's flag) so I hold both my hands together while I paint. Model between thumb and index in my left hand while my right hand rests in the palm (ish) of my left hand. For increased stability, rest forearms against the table/desk you're sitting at. How do you keep steady. I literally use breathing techniques when I paint details, like the Army taught me to sharp shoot. I only drink 10-20oz of coffee over an hour period. So 10oz every 30-45 minutes and if I want another I drink it. My hands usually only start shaking when I drink 3 or more cups, so I've learned to stop after 1-1.5 cups before or during morning painting sessions. I did this for everyone, because paint shouldn't be super intimidating! Agreed. I've learned tonnes about how to paint things and how to get certain effects just from watching youtube tutorials, and from looking at threads like this. Honestly, I'm not painting Ultramarines, so this one isn't very useful for me, but it's still a good tutoriaal and is obviously going to help some people to paint white, which is a good thing. One thing that was recommended for me to do is take 1st company skulls, cut the top part of the skull off, reposition, then add white drops.
