Pyroclast91's Forge = Salamanders Primaris and Death Guard

Recommended Posts

Just to clarify the only steps past the rest I've done on the sgt is a layer of runefang steel on his metal areas and a layer of my "secret sauce" on his armor to be followed with highlights and a wash or two I'm still undecided on battle damage and weathering as with my fluff the force has had a chance to re-equip in the forges of Nocturne

On another note while being side tracked from my current etl vow I started rounding up all the pieces for this bad boy that's been sitting in pretty much this state since my better half bought it for my birthday last year....did I mention I'm really good at starting projects and not so awesome at finishing them lol

Dang Pyro all of your GS work is fantastic. I wish I could do that kinda work. I think it adds a ton to the models, and it will be even better when theyre all painted. The GS additions I think really give the sense that your Sallies are masters of the forge and have taken the time to work on their armor. I love it!

With the painting, the green looks awesome to me! I'm a fan of the vibrant, bright green, as I'm sure you can tell from my WIP thread haha. I look forward to seeing a completed model with highlight work and all the fun stuff! I personally don't do weathering or anything like that, just because I like the look of a fresh force. Especially if you've justified it to yourself as it sounds you have, then I wouldn't worry about it for now, just get more paint on more sallies! :biggrin.: can always add stuff like that later. You do plan to add on the shoulder pads and backpacks right? I assume so, but just want to clarify because you've begun painting without them! Just personal preference?

Love how you're keeping this thread updated consistently. Keep up the awesome work. For Vulkan!

@ Bluebelly- thank you very much for the compliment about my sculpting it's a skill I've been trying to work on a lot and I'm still very very far from happy with it so its nice to hear something encouraging besides my eternally unsatisfied internal voice for a change :) and yes lol they are getting shoulder pads and backpacks but I spray those separately and I still haven't decided if I'm gonna gs the drake heads or freehand them. I'm really hoping to make my first ever fw order soon and get some shoulder pads I can press mould cuz my drake heads aren't super consistent so far. Also typically I wouldn't have glued the bolters in place yet either but I got a little excited during the construction process. I'm glad you like the green I'm going with they always describe it as emerald so I kinda see it as that vibrant multi toned color in my head unfortunately the paint I'm using is one I mixed and can't remember the ratio probably should have written it down it's mostly warp stone glow auric armor gold and just a lil moot green IIRC

Again thank you for your kind words I will continue to try to do our legion proud and keep regularly updating

So nothing super exciting today I did manage top lay down the base layer of runefang steel on the metal bits and get my first layer of grey on my bases which I think I did a little too heavy but I blame poor lighting conditions and it being the first time I've done cork bases I think I'll be able to make it work tho and overall I consider it a successful start to the week any C&C as always it's greatly appreciated

So in an attempt too keep myself from getting bored with just working on my vets I've been slowly working on the other squads I'm building with my BAC box. I have several that I'm settled on the cataphractii and 5 tac support marines with choom will definitely be iron hands and I've got 6 or 7 suits of mk VI that I was thinking Raven Guard seekers? Then a tac support squad of meltas from the salamanders that I was considering converting into stand in pyroclasts until I can make a fw order but that leaves me with 10 suits of mk IV I could really use some input as I don't have the books yet and don't know what plays well and what is absolute garbage also I've always been a modeler first player second but I would like to turn this into a decently playable force so if anybody can help me on the subject it would really be appreciated otherwise I'll have to stick with the info from battle scribe and I think we all know how hit and miss that can be

@our_baz Thank you very much baz gs is a cruel fickle mistress but one I intend to master.... Eventually that is lol I suppose you're rite vanilla tac marines are always important but with the after Istvaan theme I'm shooting for I was kinda leaning more towards this first bac box being specialists who survived the massacre I suppose realistically speaking tho more tac marines would have survived than anyone else but to my way of thinking surviving the drop site massacre would be reason for elevation to veteran status I imagine... All that being said I have been toying with the idea of doing a couple vanilla tac squads with members drawn from each of the 3 legions that survived Istvaan or possibly even from other legions that have been seconded to the salamanders but I think that will happen when I get my second bac box in a month or so

Happy Tuesday brothers and sisters it's time again that I should lay down the brush and return to my hibernation bay for my nightly regenerative coma unfortunately I didn't have a ton of time to work on my models tonight but they're getting greener by the day I managed to get a layer of "shiny green #1" on four more marines and a touch up layer plus an ink wash of army painter green tone on Daario which I'm very pleased with

So....I sorta got hung up on a massive mental block on the fluff for my Veteran Sgt Daario (needs a new last name) but that's besides the point Ive been working on ideas for the rest of the squad first up is this bad melon farmer

His name is Donny short for Don'terianus you'd go by "Donny"too most if not all of my characters are drawn from film, tv, books, comics, video games, basically from all my other interests anyhow when I first saw that power maul staring at me from the bottom of an old dirty ziploc bag full of bits inspiration struck. Anybody else watch inglorious basterds? Remember the "Bear Jew" the one who went around smashing nazi skulls with a bat :) enter Donny a native of Themis Donny was a brawler before he became an Astartes constantly getting himself into fights usually defending someone who couldn't defend themselves. Donny was everything the salamanders represented nobility, loyalty, honour, pragmatism, and compassion for humanity, during training the captains marked Donny out for the assault squads because of his natural affinity for brawling even though some said he had too mild a temperament to be an assault marine. That all changed on the black sands of Istvaan V something broke inside Donny the chaplains aren't sure whether it was the betrayal itself which had scarred so many amongst the legion, or if it was watching his captain and mentor tortured at the hands of the foul Emperors Children while he was powerless to help trapped under an over turned rhino apc. Either way Donny's efficacy in the field has only if anything improved. The fires of hatred fueled by the need for vengeance burn hot within him and when unleashed upon the traitors his brothers have described it as unsettling seeing there once calm cool collected brother turn into a savage killing machine. Donny carries an ornate power maul of a design the legion artificers have been unable to replicate, the maul was carried by the late Sgt Tyros Ky'tel Donnys mentor and closest friend who called it "the Wyverns Wale" because the sound of the dual core disruptor field generator makes when in use sounds much like the drakes of Nocturne. After watching a pair of Emperors Children flay his friend alive and leave him bleeding to death on the black sand. Donny dragged himself free of the wreck and went to his friends side. Tyros was alive but wouldn't be for long through skinless lips his blood gargled last words were "teach the traitors to fear the Wyverns Wale" Donny built a pyre for his friend in the traditions of there home then took up his friends maul and a bolter he found near by and set out on the bloody path of vengeance.

Still very much work in progress I just wanted to get it sorta roughed out and maybe get some ideas from you? brainstorming with people really seems to help with my mental block problems anywho thanks for reading I'll try too keep the updates coming

I was toying with the idea of doing red helmets but until I get more bodies on the field to break up the colors I felt they'd look like Christmas ornaments so I figured the vets well get some sort of metallic color that as you can see is starting life as a dark bronze

@our_baz thank you very much that's what I was going for I want them to be identifiable as salamanders but at the same time be a lil different from the other greens I've seen out there unfortunately the recipe for the paint I'm using has been lost to the warp in other words I didn't think to write down the exact ratio at the time I wasn't planning on using the paint for my entire army I'm gonna mix up some more this next week so Ill post the exact recipe when I do but I started with about a half full bottle of - Caliban Green, then mixed with small amounts of -Auric Armor Gold - Warplock Bronze - ArmyPainter green tone ink- and just a hint of Moot Green to brighten it up again I apologize I didn't think to write down my recipe I've been kicking myself for a while for that but I will post it asap thanks for the comment and for watching my progress it's much appreciated

Hello again friends it's been a long weekend with little work accomplished model wise as I was a couple hundred miles from the little plastic buggars. But I did manage to squeeze a couple pretty productive hours in tonight getting some reds and some oranges down. I also did some green touch ups (nothing highlights what you missed like taking a picture lol) and finally gave up on a creative idea for the bolters and went with black. Then I got started on my power weapons any thoughts??? My goal for the week is to complete this vow by the end of the week especially after seeing the ETL points update Gotta keep the HH in the front n all. My plan if that happens though is too step my game up on my next vow I'm half tempted to go for the full 3000. Idk we'll see my army definitely needs a knight though so it'll at the very least include that

The plan for tomorrow is figure out what I'm gonna do shoulder pads wise should I free hand? Or should I sculpt? Also I've been debating with myself like crazy over what I should order from fw next month I'm planning on spending £200-£250 might as well get that free shipping rite? But I can't decide what's gonna be the most beneficial for my army if anybody has any suggestions id love to hear them and as always I really appreciate any C&C

Time again for another update I still haven't gotten around to the shoulder pads as I'm horribly indecisive and easily distracted. but I did get my first couple of pots of shade from the gw line. I finally figured it was time to give em a shot after all the awesome results I've seen and after playing around with them for quite a while I'm fairly certain I'm using them wrong. I think my first mistake was I used them a little late in the game from what I now understand I had already done far more detail work than I should have before applying the washes I did. :( Oh well you live and you learn rite? I think they still look alright if you can look past the occasional unnatural shadow. After my "learning" experience with washes I started free handing the flames on the armour starting with mephiston red which I'll work through one more red two oranges and two yellows

Looking good really like your helmet design (I'm stealing the bronze idea btw), dont forget your shoulder pads or highlighting! I approve of the flame(?) effect on the weapons. Small suggestion would be to make the background a very dark colour it helps the pattern pop more. You could make the pattern more natural looking by keep most of the pattern red, and were the patterns join have the brightest colours their (picture below to show what I mean). Personally I'm not a fan of your bright red pistol holsters. Interested on how your free hand flames come out. Keep up the good work.

Thanks Baz I've been going back and forth on the helmets I'm glad you like them steal away my friend. And as for the weapons I was thinking the same thing that I should switch it up to a dark background color it does look rather odd on silver. As for the shoulder pads I'm hoping I'll have the motivation to get to them tonight no worries I haven't forgotten them :) oooh and the holsters aren't gonna stay that bright of a red except for my sgts serpenta holster

So I didn't get nearly what I hoped to accomplish done this week as I've been sick and had zero motivation but today I managed to pick up the old brush again

Oh and the sculpting tools I finally got over my indecisiveness and decided to sculpt my shoulder pads instead of freehanding them I'm still not sure it was the better choice tho

I also did a little backpack work for those of you wondering if I knew marines wear backpacks I do I'm just slow lol

I also revisited my power weapons and did what our_baz suggested and I must thank you I think they look much much better with a black background

I feel like I'm finally nearing the finish line and I'm pretty excited about it I'm also pretty excited about some sweet sweet resin crack that should be arriving in around 3-4 weeks to bolster the XVIIIth hint hint papas coming home ;) and he's bringing some big metal friends more on that later MUST FINISH THIS VOW FIRST thanks for reading through my ramblings and checking out my projects any C&C as always is greatly appreciated

Yay almost done in the time it takes some to paint entire armies I've managed to ALMOST finish 10 marines baby steps I suppose. Considering this will be my first completely painted unit I've painted a lot of single models but until I found myself in this ETL thing I never managed to muster up the motivation to finish an entire unit. So kind of an accomplishment and hopefully the first on a long road of many projects so without further rambling on too the pictures

Everybody got shoulder pads today

20160626_200239.jpgimages

I also finished up the flames and power weapons

Daario and Donny both got backpacks and there first round of highlights finally starting too see the light at the end of the tunnel or is that just a las cannon?

You always gotta have a chaplain to oversee the creation of new Astartes rite?

So as I mentioned before I've got some big nasty resinforcements (see what I did there?) On there way hopefully they'll be here in time for the ETL if not I'm sure there will be another competition rite? I hope so. Any who along with Vulkan and a salamanders contemptor I'm getting two leviathans with one of each cc arm and two storm cannons. And though they're still weeks away I'm already having quite the dilemma deciding how to build/ paint them one will be a salamander obviously. But the other I'm not so sure since my army will also include iron hands and raven guard I'd like to give them a little love too ya know. So with that being said I could really use some help deciding what to do and would love to hear ANY suggestions or input any of you might have. Thanks for checking out my amateur painting shenanigans.

These are probably the best out of the ten I did I'm hoping that if the paint looks good enough I can play it off as "I wanted each one too look unique?" Yea we'll go with that lol

I also decided to rummage around in my "unfinished/half started projects box" which is always a little bit shameful until you find something awesome to make you forget about your inability to finish things. Or is that just me?

20160627_185654.jpgupload pic

What with all the awesome WE armies I've been seeing on here it's had me itching to paint some blue and white. And since I got these from a buddy of mine for next to nothing I figure it'll be a good way to break up the monotony of my normal all green all the time routine. Any who I think I still got another hour or two of painting maybe I'll get some more pics up tonight. Thanks for checking out my work any C&C is always greatly appreciated
