Help with starting a traitor Iron Warrior list

Hi everyone,

Because of reasons, I'm starting an Iron Warriors HH army. This is my first venture into the setting, and I have no idea what to expect. I also do not own any of the books. I don;t care too much about the big, black books FW sells, so thought I'd invest in the red ones. The weird thing is that the LEGIONES ASTARTES: AGE OF DARKNESS LEGIONS book  is intended to be used alongside its companion book, The Horus Heresy Legiones Astartes: Crusade Army List. But that last book is nowhere to be found on the FW site. What's up with that?

Where should I start? I have the following units:

3 Iron Circle guys

10 breachers (how should I arm them?)

1 Sicaran (with lascannons)

1 Typhon

5 of those Cyclone toting terminators (they use power fists and combibolters, right?

Additionally, I have two tac squads from the BaC box left over. What´s a good way to equip/arm/use these?

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks,

Augustus

For the big red book - try checking out their latest article (news article from the 20th).

From a modeller / armchair reader's perspective, with those BaC sprues I would model them up as 2x Vet squads (magnetising the special / heavy weapon arms so you can field them as pure bolter tacticals too, great for 30k and 40k).  If you mag the bolters up at the wrists you could slowly invest in some other weapon choices (ie more special weapons or the newer heavy weapons) later on.  Really depends on the direction you plan to go - ie gun lines (more Missile Launchers etc), advancing force on foot or rhinos (sniper vets with HB's), or specific rite of wars (ie no tacticals needed, just make them into plasma or volkite squads).

Thanks buddy, that's good advice. I don't really like magnetizing, so I'll focus on the specialist units. My aim is to have a lumbering force of firepower coming right at you.

I forgot I also have a Leviathan. :)

You assumed I knew what 'the upcoming Legiones Astartes Age of Darkness Army List' means. Is this a rerun of the book with the generic Legion rules?

In honesty?  I have no idea, I assume that like the older crusade army list book, it will hopefully give all the latest updated rules for all generic Legion Astartes units (non-legion specific, there's an image on that news page with the list of all unit entries in that book).  It's not quite out yet - so keep your eye out on the sticky topic of "New to 30k - What books do I need?" in the Age of Darkness section for an update.  It's not a 're-run' of the first rules book, it looks to be an updated version which will contain the latest releases and rules (to cover things like Leviathan's and I assume any 7th ed updates).

Multiple edits, sorry, just removing this unrequired comment.

Its an Update of LA:CAL In that it includes all legion units that were added in books 4-6 as well as a few new ones as well as some rebalancing of costs and whatnot for the units found therein.

Now, looking at your collection, to get a minimum playable army you'd need:

  • An HQ Model. Pretty self explanatory. This can range from a Praetor to a Centurion with or without the following Consul choice(s):
    • Chaplain
    • Vigilator
    • Champion
    • Siegebreaker
    • Delegatus
    • Forge Lord.
    • All other Consuls being Support Officers and thus being unable to fill the 1 Compulsory HQ Slot.
  • For your Troops, it depends on if you're taking a RoW. For one, if you took Pride of the Legion (Requires a model with Master of the Legion in the army which only Primarchs, Praetors, Heralds and Delegatus have), you could run your 20 Tac Marines as Tac Vets instead since they'd get bumped to Troops instead of Elites.
  • Breachers: 10men, 2 Graviton or Melta Guns, Sergeant w/ Artificer Armour, Melta Bombs, Power Fist.

Ehhhhhh as a rough guesstimate of working with what you've got with some minor additions, you could go for:

Created with BattleScribe

You would attach the Siegebreaker to the Tyrants to give them Tank Hunter and the Iron Circle to the Warsmith/Praetor. He has a Servo-Arm so he can repair them while on the move. Its going to be a slow trudge though.

Rapiers with Phosphex give you excellent Anti non-GMC/AV with Ap3 and Poisoned 3+. Shatter Shells give you more S8 Sunder Shots.

Vets have Sniper for Ap2 and a Flat 4+ to wound vs Higher Toughness. The Heavy Bolters also get Shrapnel Bolts for Pinning which can be useful. Its a free upgrade so why not?

Breachers stand in your Mid field capping an objective and blasting 2 Haywire shots into whatever gets close. Just don't move them since Graviton Guns are Heavy 1 and Blast.
