Word Bearers Chaplain (Wargear Question)

Recommended Posts

Hey,

I have been looking at running a Terminator Chaplain for my Word Bearers and had a cool thought. Only problem is, I'm not sure if it works so just wanted to check my logic with some of the people here.

Thanks! smile.png

Part 1:

The Word Bearers Tainted Weapon rules state: 'Any Word Bearers Character with the option to take a Power Weapon may take a Tainted Weapon at the same cost'.

Therefore, when purchasing the Terminator Armour, Combi-Bolter and Power Weapon upgrade for a Centurion, can the Power Weapon be freely swapped for a Tainted Weapon?

I'm thinking yes, as it fits the Tainted Weapon's restrictions:

- He is a Character

- He has the option to take a Power Weapon (alongside Terminator Armour etc.)

- And therefore he may choose a Tainted Weapon with his Terminator Armour instead of a Power Weapon for the same upgrade cost.

Part 2:

If Part 1 is correct, I would then have a Centurion with Terminator Armour, a Tainted Weapon and a Combi-Bolter.

If I then upgrade this Centurion to a Chaplain does he gain his Crozius Arcanum on top of his existing Wargear?

I am thinking yes again as unlike the Librarian Force Weapon, which specifically states it replaces a weapon, the Chaplain just gains it (which in theory means that any Terminator Chaplain can have 2 Power Weapons and a Combi-Bolter).

Therefore leaving me with a Chaplain with Terminator Armour, a Power Weapon (Crozius), Tainted Weapon and Combi-Bolter.

Conclusion:

If part 1 and 2 are correct, I was thinking it would be cool to have a Chaplain with both a Tainted Weapon and a Power Weapon because:

- I will always give him Burning Lore and take powers from Biomancy

- Having both weapons means that he can use his Power Weapon in most games...

- ...But in games where Iron Arm is rolled on Biomancy, he can cast this to gain +3 Strength and Smash, then attack with his Tainted Weapon in Combat which becomes a S7 AP2 Instant Death weapon of MURDER!!!

Now obviously Iron Arm will only come up occasionally, which is why having both weapons is necessary as he will use his Crozius most of the time, but the Tainted Weapon will make for a nice surprise in game where I get Iron Arm as S7 will wound most things easily, and they won't get armour saves making the otherwise lacklustre Tainted Weapon very attractive.

Yep, totally legit, man.

I can tell you from experience that random acts of biomancy are hilarious and fun when you're playing Word Bearers.

The key is not banking on a single result on the chart.

Thanks for your replies!! Glad this works thumbsup.gif

@Flint - That's good to hear! Not going to lie, I have such a thing for Biomancy with Burning Lore at the moment! I have been looking through the powers and everything is good! There is not a single power I would be unhappy with, so have been planning my army with this in mind as I will never be relying on key powers coming up.

Unlike with Telepathy, which has a couple of very good powers (Invisibility, Terrify and Hallucination seem good, whilst the Primaris is a nice free power to get with Psychic Focus), but there is essentially a 50% chance I will get something I don't want.

Plus, pretty much the entire Biomancy set fixes the key areas where Kor Phaeron is weak! I'm a big fan of this guy and determined to get him in a few games so any power he rolls is great!

Smite or Life Leech - Gives him a shooting attack

Iron Arm - Improves his Toughness to 6 (no longer a threat of S6 Instant Death), whilst S7, AP2 Lightning Claws are awesome!

Warp Speed - Fixes his non-Astartes Initiative, and gives him lots more attacks which makes up for his low base number.

Endurance - Cast on his unit to give him Eternal Warrior (no Instant Death regardless of Toughness now) and 4+ FNP which makes him considerably more survivable and reduces the risk of an easy Slay the Warlord objective due to Jealous Command.

Enfeeble - Leaves his opponents at just as much of a disadvantage as him.

Haemorrhage - The only power that has no real advantage for him, but if someone else gets Enfeeble to make the target take Toughness Tests on T3 this could decimate units without an Inv Save or FNP to fall back on.

The wording is a little screwy with the Tainted Weapons.

If you have the option to purchase a Power Weapon, once you are equipped with one, you cannot purchase one, and therefore cannot take a Tainted Weapon.

However, you can purchase one when in Power Armour, which would be the same cost as the Power Weapon.

However, that is a bit of banal wording that I don't uphold.

Very much this, if you get lucky and have iron arm your laughing in challenges

I'd agree that you get both, wording as usual is a bit naff but doubt people will complain
