Sadly I'm in the UK... so it'd be a helluva lot in P&P!

Wow that table is glorious! Where did you get the columns?

What's that blue foam stuff that you used for craters and such? Insulation foam? Is it something you can buy in small quantities without spending a fortune?

I shall answer you both with a little write up I did for reddit...

Hi guys, welcome to my third (and almost last) post about this board!

The purpose was to get it game ready for a weekend of games we planned. This happened last weekend and was totally awesome. I wanted to share these pictures of the board with you, talk about how I made it, and get some ideas of where to go next with it.

Previous albums are here https://imgur.com/a/BgunI and here https://imgur.com/a/KiSHD

STRUCTURE:

The base is an 8’ x 4’ piece of 18mm plywood. It’s heavy as hell and sturdy enough for the purpose. I rimmed it with some (I think fencing) material I found lying around my brother’s workshop (thanks James).

MAIN TEMPLE AREA

I got sheets of Styrofoam here https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B008MYRJT6/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 that were pretty much the right size. I trimmed them down and stuck two down (on top of each other, so the temple would be 10cm high) to form the back of the temple half. I then cut a section out of one sheet as the top part of the stairs. At this point, I was still working in inches, but I forgot that all the tiling would be in mm. So I fudged a lot with rubble when finishing the stairways!

I also massacred these other two bits of Styrofoam to form the rubbled areas you see on the temple frontage. Also used some Styrofoam offcuts to make the bases for the columns that stick out from the front of the temple.

I got all my tiled pieces made by Sarissa Precision http://www.sarissa-precision.com/, where Steve was fantastically helpful over about 3-4 big orders. I cut them to fit the cut out areas and stuck them down. I then cut the column bases to size. They’re made from sheets of styorfoam 2cm thick. I got them on ebay, but the seller isn’t active anymore! I topped these with 10cm square piece of mdf and used a filler around the edges.

COLUMNS AND OTHER BITS.

The columns themselves I found on amazon, here https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B007RHD786/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and here https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B003W0IE2Q/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 for the main temple and road respectively. I also found the statue on amazon, here https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B005EIWOLG/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 . These were all cut up as you can see, the tops (they’re all hollow) filled in with filler and then sprayed with grey primer and sprayed white. Then I just covered them with obscene amounts of Army Painter Dark Tone, and I’m reasonably happy with the results. I did the same on the Lions https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000GKW4CQ/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 except that I sprayed them about 5 times with primer to get rid of some of the finer detail.

I then magnetised the columns, with 20mm magnets glued on the bases, and 25mm magnets stuck up in the columns. I got them on ebay, and they’re really, very powerful!

OUTSIDE SECTIONS:

The 4 square MDF bases are again laser etched to my design (I made up some excel docs and Steve was able to copy them into AI) in 3mm thick MDF.

The fountains and market pieces came from Blotz http://blotz.co.uk/ and Mini Monsters http://www.minimonsters.eu/ I filled the boxes with beads from my mother’s sewing box! I also got the shrine from MM. I made the planters myself from 2mm MDF that I bought in bulk from Hobarts https://hobarts.com/sheet-materials/wood/laser-grade-mdf_124_15_55/2mm-laser-grade-mdf-p-312.html and glued them around some offcuts of Styrofoam I had.

All the tiled areas were sprayed white, then given a heavily watered down wash of Dark Tone. I used A LOT of Dark Tone.

RUBBLE:

All the rubble is cheap exterior filler I get from B&Q, either with sand mixed in, or textured after. There is a slight inconsistency to this that I will be looking to rectify in the future. It was painted first with Dryad Bark, and drybrushed with Rakarth Flesh. To achieve the volume, I got pots made up at Homebase with a colour matching service. It’s pretty much spot on!

I'll also throw out an additional shout out to TabletopFix, a great blog that I use to find new terrain manufacturers. Would never have seen Blotz or MM without them.

Sweet! That's an astonishing table, and some awe-inspiring shots of the armies fighting over it. Well done!

Whereabouts in the U.K. are you cats?

Thanks mate! We're all dotted around the south-east, and congregate a few times a year!

A little non-Heresy update, our latest Commission piece is done, and I think Rob did an awesome job (and I did a great job building it)

Hey guys, been catching up one some pictures today, so here are some bits and pieces I got done last month. The Havocs were finished before our last game day, but I wanted them to be a surprise on the field, so I'm only sharing them now! They are absolutely devastating on the field! BS5, Tank Hunter and -1 Cover Saves! The dread I've had lying around for a while, and he had his first game a few weeks ago. He was also awesome. Contemptors are so survivable!

Hi guys... had a bit of a play recently in advance of a commission I've been talking about with a client.

Since they came out I wanted to have a look at the new Deathwatch kits, so I ordered a solitary dude on ebay and had a play.

Basically the only difference is the waist spacer, and I'm not really sure he needs the extra height... thoughts?

(bear in mind they're unfinished, and the waist would be filled in on the one with the spacer there)

We've been a bit lax lately, what with the Christmas holidays, and Rob's fiancee whisking him off to Mexico as a surprise!

but we're back!

I've been working on another commission project, truescaling 20 Sons Of Horus tactical marines. The sergeants will be fully magnetised too! This as well is part of a larger project, so expect 10 Imperial Fist Heavy Support Troopers, 5 Templars and some characters!

This shot includes the bodies of 5 Seekers I'm making for Rob!

In the near future, I'll be spending my Xmas loot (£70 of gift vouchers) on a gorkamorka mob! And building a nice desert board for us all to play on!

We've been busier than this blog really reflects... I really want to update this more often!

So, today we have Rob's next model in his EC army, a contemptor. Built by me, magnetised by me, painted by Rob.

Straying a bit today from the nicely painted models...

I'm working on a commission currently for a truescaled veteran squad, and the client and i are trying to decide between 32mm and 40mm bases. It's a bit of a mix because we're using my style (builder-pattern?) and mixing it with some of the new Doghouse pattern, using Tartaros legs and torso fronts...

Thoughts?

The legs on the 32 mm look better to me, but its hard to tell without the torso. Sometimes a model ends up looking out-of-sorts if too much of it overhangs the base. A set of bolter in front of the torso arms will probably look fine, but as they're veterans.... I'd go with the 40 mm.

I would go with 32mm. I dont think big base means much. I like the model to be whst I see and the base.

32mm is definitely the consensus! And the client agreed... so 32 it is (sorry Jaxom)

This is where we're up to now with the Mk3s! I hope to smash out most of the rest of it over the next few days.

I'd stick to 32mm, they'll look fine, even with Tartaros/Cataphractii legs, it's how I've been doing mine

Cheers,

Jono

These look great Jono... are you going to clean up the mould lines and flash marks? Shame to see them on such lovely models..

Can I ask how you got the Caraphractii torsos to line up with the power armoured backs? Or if you went with that method? I noticed that the cata torso front was a bit wider than power armoured backs. I'd love to see some WIP shots of yours. Or a rundown of what you do.

Also on the agenda today:

We recently got a commission for a small Deathwatch army. I happened to have a truescaled deathwatch guy lying around from an earlier test, so I sent that to rob to bust out a test model for the client to approve.

This is what he finished with, and I really like it (as does the client!)

Sadly it's not a truescale commission, but I'm still looking forward to building them and magnetising every last one!

Also on Rob's bench, is a nice Macharius Commission. 3 of the beasts!

This time, I'm the client! He's painting them up to match my Vultures and Thunderbolt, it all combines to form the armoured division for my Guard. I'm sending him some transfers tomorrow so he can carry on!

I  used Doghouse's current method HERE with mkIII torsos (you will need to trim the internal neck part of the rear torso piece), and skipped the GS part and used pouches, grenades etc to bulk out the rear belt line. Due to the girth of the Cataphractii torso, I was gluing thed arms a little further forward which meant they still had plenty of plastic to glue to.

Cheers,

Jono
