luna wolves painting

Hi all,

 

I am relatively new to the B&C and I am just starting a HH luna wolves army (basically because of Garviel Loken) 

 

I know that light grey can be really hard to paint well and I was wondering if anyone could point me towards a painting tutorial or show me one of their own.

You're in luck, my friend. While I personally don't do the mighty XVI, Enigami recently did a fairly detailed tutorial on how he does his in his thread.

 

 

 

So, I was able to pick up several of the exclusive praetors this weekend. Lucky for Athrawes, I was able to use one for my buddy's Luna Wolves force. I've done a painting guide for my grey that goes all the way up to detailing. I'll be able to finish after I get the enormous amount of resin we have sitting around built. It really adds up when you get two new forces in the mail. Sorry, its picture heavy, but here it is:
 
1. I start by priming black.

2. I then air brush Vallejo German Grey over the entire model. I make sure to get the recesses so my gradient in the later stages isn't too unrealistic. I went over the lighter areas with maybe two thin passes.

3. Next, I took some GW dawnstone and did the same thing. This time I made sure to leave a bit of the darker areas, but still tried to get a nice full cover.

4. The last grey I used is GW administratum grey. I tried to do less of a full coat focusing only on the lighter areas. I still kept an eye out for unrealist gradients so I could have dark shadows while maintaining a sense of realism.

5. Next I start to add my white picking out all of the highlights with a few passes. I also do a couple long range sprays to bring up the overall color.

6. The last step I've I got for you today is blocking in my blacks. I paint everything in black that will be a color other than my base.

He looks a little too white here, but its just a visual trick as the colors are close to the extremes on the grey scale. The the details and washes will make the color appear as it does on the other model I've painted. I'll try to finish this in a few days. I hope it was helpful. Without further ado, here is the last half of the guide for my grey. If anyone (looking at you Athrawes) wants more specifics than I've listed let me know and I'll try to break it down further.
 
7. Here I've added the details to my buddy's praetor. The silver is done in a nice thinned coat of GW lead belcher. The brass is done in GW warplock bronze followed by GW runelord brass. I did the face in three wet layers of different browns ending in GW cadian fleshtone. I then washed the lead belcher with a light GW nulin oil wash followed by picking out the highlights with more belcher.

8. Next I sealed the praetor with a flat clear coat and started to mix up some oil paint. I mixed together Winsor & Newton Titanium White and Burnt Umber until I got a nice "muddy" looking color and consistency. A little bit of mineral spirits was added to help mix the paint, but keep it nice and thick.

9. Next I gave the praetor a liberal bath of mineral spirits. Working quickly I carefully drug the muddy mixture into the crack, recess, and around studs. I let this dry for about 20 minutes and then went back and cleaned it up with mineral spirits, q-tips, and a brush. This is the result.

He's now sealed in a gloss coat and awaiting luna wolves transfers. I also made a little progress on the justaerins by blocked in all my colors. This guy still needs washes, weathering (to break up the black), and two oil washes.

Oh and then there's this... Don't ask me why my buddy wanted him in SoH green to go with his Lunas.
