My old marshal in his new and shiny terminator armor. Took me forever to paint, ugh. Been painting 7+ hours today and only worked on him, and already had the cloth parts done last night. Pff.

Hey guys. Yesterday, I had one loooong painting session, and I finished the first of two dreadnought: the Contemptor Mortis, the Venerable Handrich Jäger, called 'Aestus´.

More pics of him, from all angles, can be found here.

@Kisada: Yes! After the gloss varnish, put some Agrax around the studs. Let it dry, then paint them Leadbelcher and give them an upper highlight of Mithril or whatever it's called nowadays. Also, don't forget to paint the laurels on the sergeant's chest. And a tip: those bass relief IF symbols on their shoulder pads are hard to get right. A simple trick I've learned is to mix Nuln Oil with Lahmian Medium 1:1 and just paint with that around the fist itself. Capillary action will suck the darkened paint around the raised surfaces of the fist., thereby obsuring the white there.

@Augustus thanks for the tips. I'll give the agrax method a try on the studs I haven't painted yet.

I haven't forgotten about the laurels on the sarge :)

So... I'm a knuckle head and only just realized this was opened to all successors and not just Imperial fist chapter tactics successors...

I will review the masses of unpainted black templars and come up with a vow...

On an absolute whim, I, Halandaar, vow on the honour of the Imperial Fists to fully paint at least one Captain with Artificer Armour, Storm Shield and Power Sword (from Codex: Space Marines, and worth 140 Points) by Saturday 3rd December 2016. I promise to provide at least one "start" picture (as and when the bits I just purchased arrive tongue.png) and a final "vow completed" picture in that time. I vow to bring honour to Dorn and the Emperor by completing my vow and not failing my brothers-in-arms.

What have I let myself in for?!

Edit: Maths.

Edit 2: Before pic:

I took a peek over at the Iron Warriors side ... as far as vows go ... we are crushing them

Painting question:  In a tutorial I saw the guy put on a gloss coat, decals, and then another gloss coat.  Then he went and put the washes and weathering.

I was trying to follow this but got ahead of myself and put the washes on before the decals ... how badly did I screw up?

Not a lot? It all depends on whether or not the washes were put on in places where you want to put the decals and whether or not you want to weather the decals.

Personally I only use washes to blackline - for which the gloss varnish is beneficial too, as it adds surface tension and thus the capillary action of the wash is better. For the same reason, gloss varnish is a good base for putting on decals. If you wash the entire surface on which you want to put decals, then you nullify the Gloss Varnish's effects. So if you did that, you didn't screw up, you just undid the decal preparation).

You can always do what you did (wash and weathering after gloss but before decals) and then do another coat of gloss, after which you put on the decals. You did rob yourself of the chance to weather the decals then, though, but depending on your taste that's not a huge problem. I always finish with a coat of satin varnish, as I don't like the look  of gloss on my mini's.

Here´s my step by step IF painting process.
