Night Lords - Terror Assaulting Advice [2500 points]

Recommended Posts

Oi! So in my fruitless attempt at choosing a legion, I have thrown my hands up in the air and chosen my favorite from a lore perspective - the dreaded Night Lords. That being said, I am having some trouble coming up with a list that, while fluffy, can at least survive a few rounds with more powerful lists such as mechanized lists. I am not married to anything in the list (aside from the Terror Squads, Curze and the sicaran) so if something fits better please feel free to let me know! Without further ado...

Rite of War: Terror Assault

HQ

  • Sevatar
Elites
  • Legion Quad Launcher Support Battery
    • Quad Mortar x3
  • Apothecarian Detachment
    • Legion Apothecary x2
Troops
  • Terror Squad
    • 9x Executioner, 9x Volkite Chargers
    • Headsman: Nostraman Chainglaive, Melta Bombs, AA
    • Dedicated Transport: Drop Pod
  • Terror Squad
    • 9x Executioner, 9x Volkite Chargers
    • Headsman: Nostraman Chainglaive, Melta Bombs, AA
  • Terror Squad
    • 9x Executioner, 9x Volkite Chargers
    • Headsman: Nostraman Chainglaive, Melta Bombs, AA
Fast Attack
  • Night Raptor Squad
  • 9x Nostraman Chainglaives
  • Huntmaster: Melta Bombs, Nostraman Chainglaive
Heavy Support
  • Sicaran Battle Tank
  • Lascannons, Armored Ceramite
Lord of War
  • Konrad Curze
Total points: 2305 (I'm sure I can squeeze in points somewhere to make it a cool 2500).

Quad mortars dont make sense to me. i would be inclined to drop them for some contemptors. they are quite night lord-esque and give a bit more armour saturation. as at the moment every str7+ gun is going to aim at your sicarian on first turn.

Sevatar is walking? He can't join the Terror Squad since they have Infiltrate.

Chainglaives are no substitute for power fists on your Sgts. You don't want to be hoping to rend in that common Sgt v. Sgt challenge.

Chainglaives on the Raptors are a waste - the extra attack will be much more use than forking out for a weapon for each.

Nothing wrong with quad mortars - they'll provide serious anti armour and your army is lacking in that

Sevatar - Get him a squad to roll with and a ride he can't join any Terror Squads, stupid rule but there it is

I'm fairly new to 30k and have been toying around with the idea of night lords, and keep seeing people say that sev cant join terror squads. But sev has the master of ambush warlord trait that gives him and up to three units infiltrate, right? I could be way off here though lol

Not the same Master of Ambush since his has VERY specific Wording. Look at his profile in your own book and compare that to the WT in the BRB.

Make a combo of Chianglaives and twin-lightning claws for your night raptors. They make a great little kill squad which really kills( it's in the name) stuff even when being charged because 1 attack each is not preferable.

Also drop Sevatar and take a chaplain with a jump pack!!

Thanks everyone for the advice! It is extremely helpful as my list building abilities leave a lot to be desired. I'll definitely take the suggestions into account and post an updated list once I find some time.

Where are the apothecary's going as well bud?. Maybe give one a jump pack for the raptors? Again if drop it to 3-4 glaives and save some points. Power fist/axe on the srgs of squads. If you are taking mortars are you taking any extra shells, shatter?

Thought they couldn't as infiltrating unit

Apothecaries aren't independant characters who can join squads willy-nilly.

They're essentially a permanent addition to the squad bought with another slot, they can't voluntarily leave it.

Think of it as buying the squad a 2nd sergeant who gives them FNP.

You've already received a lot of great advice from better tacticians than me, but I just wanted to offer one suggestion because it's the primary reason my Terror Assault list not only works, but wins a lot too. I run a 3k list with a full talon of Leviathan Dreadnoughts. I'm not saying you need to run three yourself, but even one in a pod is a much better use of your sole HS slot in my opinion. There aren't many things in the game outside of LOWs that are as durable or that hit nearly as hard. It is also one of the few things dangerous enough to draw fire away from Curze and your Raptors. The Leviathan gives you a unit on the board turn 1 that can tank enemy fire while your more fragile Terror Squads and Raptors get within striking distance. The best load out in my opinion is either Siege Drill/Siege Claw (for Primarchs/Super-Heavies) or Siege Drill/Cyclonic Melta Lance (for Knights/Super-Heavies).

When your Sicaran dies on turn 1 how are you going to kill tanks? Those Melta bomb sergeants? Not really.

You need some dedicated anti-tank, probably at least if not 3 sources.

The meta is hard skewing more to full-mech by the second so your going need to pop tanks, fast and early.

Grav's on your contemptor's if you go that route, Vindicator las, some cataphractii with chain fists I don't know other censored.gif that's at least semi-reliable.

Also I suggest a Deredeo as I always think it should be in there. It's great against almost anything and helps a great deal against flyers in a pinch if need be.

At the moment your really going to lose the bulk of your force before you can make use of the models therein.

Finally have had time to take everyone's thoughts into consideration and revise my poor attempt at a list. Once again thanks everyone for providing feedback, it has been extremely helpful for me as I plan my next FW order. I've decided to bump up the points to 3000, as I was having trouble putting together a list I liked at the previous level.

Without further ado, here is what I am thinking:

RoW: Terror Assault

HQ:

  • Sevatar

Elites:

  • Legion Contemptor Dread
    • 2x CCW w/ Graviton Gun
  • Legion Quad Launcher Support Battery
    • 3x Quad Mortar - Shatter Shell
  • Legion Cataphractii Terminator Squad
    • 2x Chainfist, 2x Powerfist
    • Sergeant - combi-bolter and power sword
    • Spartan - Flare Shields, Armored Ceramite

Troops:

  • Terror Squad
    • 9x Executioner, 9x Volkite Chargers
    • Headsman - AA, Melta Bombs, Power Fist
  • Terror Squad
    • 9x Executioner, 9x Volkite Chargers
    • Headsman - AA, Melta Bombs, Power Fist
  • Terror Squad
    • 9x Executioners, 9x Volkite Chargers
    • Headsman - AA, Melta Bombs, Power Fist

Fast Attack:

  • Night Raptors [4x]
    • Huntmaster - Melta Bombs, Chainglaive

Heavy Support:

  • Leviathan
    • Armored Ceramite, DreadPod, Siege Drill, Siege Claw

Lord of War:

  • Konrad Curze

2990 points, in total.

Personally, I'd take Phosphex over AC on the Leviathan. With the remaining points, give the Terminator Sergeant a power fist and the Spartan a dozer blade.

This is literally the only time you will ever see me disagree with Caillum - otherwise I follow his and Slips' advice like gospel lol. Personally, I would never skip the AC on a Leviathan. The thing is a magnet for anything explosive or hard hitting on the table - 20 pts to have peace of mind whenever melta is near is a bargain. So that being said, I love the Leviathan set up as is. That's how my main Leviathan is set up, the one I bring even when I play smaller games, and with the exception of the times my Praetor and his Terminator squad manage to teleport right into the heart of my opponent's troops, he is invariably the MVP of my games.

Now, that being said, I do agree with Caillum on giving your Terminator Sergeant a powerfist or something similarly heavy-hitting. The beauty of the Cataphractii Terminator is his durability, and having a weapon that strikes at iniatative is less imperative when you can tank most hits and then kill with your first hit. Also, I would actually consider dropping the Spartan entirely and teleporting your Terminators in. We and the Fists are the only special snowflakes who can do this regardless of Rite of War or Mission, so it's always worth considering when rolling Cataphractii. Use the leftover points to add more Terminators to the squad to maximize A Talent for Murder. And if you keep Sevatar, you can use his Master of the Atramentar to bring them right down on him with no scatter. Nasty.

Obviously theres some left over points and such, but IMO the main thing is I'm very much aware of the armies I'll face and the terrain situation where I'm going to be playing, so I can mix the stuff I just want to use for fun with some situationaly really strong stuff. Its hard to make the perfect list in a vacuum

Why aren't you people using drop pods with Terror Assault? The whole point of the Rite is to be a better Orbital Assault, and y'all are putting 5-man Terminator squads into Spartans. What are you doing, lol? I award you no points and may Kurze have mercy on your soul.

I'll most likely revisit the list and probably drop the spartan and go the drop pod route for my Terror Squads.

In all honesty though, it's becoming pretty apparent that I'm trying to play the list in a way it's not optimized for. My tendency to gravitate towards the "cool models" is where the Spartan came from. What use is investing so heavily in the Heresy if I can't use the cool toys? Perhaps my search for the right legion needs to continue elsewhere.

I really do appreciate all of the help though, guys. I've received loads of useful feedback from all of you and it's proof of why B&C is such an awesome community.
