Night comes... Heresy Era Night Lords WIP; Now with Custodes

Hi, everybody!

After some deliberation I've decided to rebase the Night Lords I've based already (5 termies, 10 terror marines and the dreadnought), because the muddy pigments in the models don't fit with the bases. I've bought urban basing kit and some cork board so I'll be making the bases mostly from cork. I can also re-use my dread's base for my Eldar if I get a Wraithlord or War Walker, because my Eldar have similar snowy urban bases.

I've also ordered different conversion bits (chains, skulls, weapons, spiky shoulder pads etc.) so I can have more variation. The plastic MKIII and MIV are great, but they are also so bland with no running legs or pointing hands etc. Also chained skulls and helmets for my sicaran :smile.:

So here's what I have painted currently:

http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r286/zumuttaja/Night%20Lords/DSC01527_zpsgb4x7vzg.jpg

Also some new FW goodies:

Any tips for my basing? I'm thinking some pieces of cork to have height differences and then sand and bigger rubble between cork pieces and some concrete and rock pieces scattered with few bits like skulls and other stuff I have lying in my bits box. Also some razor wire and maybe something made from plasticard? Sand will be painted brown and cork and rubble in grey and then some pigment.

Snow yay or nay? Dead grass?

I'd say that those bases look mighty promising. I've never been great at bases myself though so I can't say much beyond that, go for whatever feels right for you when it comes to dead grass or other details.

First batch of bases completed. Now they look more like how I first envisaged them and now the pigments in the models fit the bases, which was a problem with the first bases. I decided not to use any grass or snow, because I think they don't need them. Note to self when I make more bases: make sure that the models fit the bases properly. I had a hard time fiddling with the models to have them have a steady footing on the bases and not look like they are faceplanting or falling backwards. Luckily I had Raptors with one leg in the air so that helped a little. Thoughts?

I have 16 more 32mm bases to do, but I think I'll paint something first. The praetor converted from B@C chaplain is underway with his cloak already painted.

@Sagentus: Thanks for the comment. I don't actually understand what you mena about the renegades. I think I'll stick to a Heresy-era force and going to stay full marine.

Got the praetor finished a bit quicker than I thought. So here are the pics (base not done and the 25 mm is just a stand-in to make painting easier):

All the bases are now finished! (Although when taking the pics I noticed that I have to go through the black rims, because they are not a solid colour.

I'm waiting for conversion bits to arrive so I can assemble more, but I have a tourney coming on late February and I'm going to be using my Eldar. So there might be small break in the Night Lords stuff, while I paint some Eldar.

The army pics of what I have so far:

These are really well done Crusius!

I really like how you add the odd unique weapon here and there! The Praetor's axe, the chain glave and especially the Eviscerator chainsword all are refreshing to see.  Heck even the marine holding the knife is awesome and cries NL :P.

Thanks for the kind comments. Here's a WIP NL sorcerer made from BoP Ahriman:

Still to smooth out the green stuff a little bit and might add a skull or some other trophy to him. A very quick conversion of cutting and filing most of the TS insignia and adding green stuff and using a dark eldar power sword as the top of the halberd, which I think looks suitably night lordish.

The conversion bits arrived and I have assembled more marines including 5 Cataprachtii with combi-weapon goodness. There are three magnetized combi-weapons, the plasmablaster and the one weapon from a Chaos terminator are not. I like how the power armoured marines are much more dynamic than if I built them straight out of the box. And kromlech assault weapon arms fit well especially on the mkIII marines as seen on one in the pic. Quite easy to just cut and glue on the plastic mk III chainsword from BoP.

Here are some mobile pics, I'll start airbrushing them soon:

Hi everyone. Long time no see. I haven't been painting a lot of Night Lords, because I've also been painting Eldar, Vanilla Marines and AoS Chaos. But now I have a small treat for you: four more marines and a NL contemptor dread (I just noticed that I haven't painted lightning on the dread, have to add them at some point)

As an added bonus I included some of my vanilla marines, not painted to as high standard, because my collection has models painted in 2006. (No images of filthy Eldar xenos here)

8th ed and a local AoS campaign will probably continue to hamper my NL project, so this thread will be updated irregularly (as it has been so far)

Holy threadomancy!

So it's been a long time since I updated my progress and sadly I've gotten no new Night Lords finished. I've gotten less painted than usual in all regards. But I've started a new army project (almost a year ago  ). I present you Adeptus Custodes:

gallery_93508_15291_115158.jpg

First my Shield Captain painted for a painting competition (a Knight won in the "big" category :dry.: )

gallery_93508_15291_271091.jpg

The Shield Captain with his buddies, the bases still unfinished. (All the bikes have a layer of Liberator gold from the same pot but somehow the Captain has a much brighter bike. :huh.: It's all in the mixing)

Some Custodian Guard

Wardens are my favorite plastic Custodian minis

Custodes and Night Lords are my main projects currently (I have a big army of Eldar, but I don't have a need to add much to it unless GW releases new Eldar..). I'll try to finish a bit over 2000 points of Custodes in addition to Trajann before contemplating of painting more Night Lords. 3 Bikes, 3 Terminators in addition to Trajann to paint. I might also paint some minis from Blackstone Fortress.

And what drove me to update my blog:

So much resin crack :biggrin.:
Updates will be slow as always

Nice work on your Custodians

What colours did you use on them? They look awesome, even more so as a whole army together!

Also, regarding your Praetor's Bike - did you shake the pot well enough? Metal paint has different pigment parts in it, and if you forget to shake your pot it may end up like that :unsure.: - still, looks great though!

For colours I'd like to refer to amazing Duncan Rhodes and his video on Warhammer TV and How to Paint: Custodian Guard.

I just tweaked the formula a little and made the power weapon effect look like lightning instead of just painting straight lines. Red cloth I started with Mephiston Red, shaded with Nuln Oil, back to Mephiston Red and then by mixing built up to Evil Sun Scarlet and then to Wild Rider Red.

I use a small coctail stick to move the paint from the pot to a wet palette (I don't like using a brush because it easily gets overloaded and damages the bristles) and I've noticed that the thicker pigment heavy paint sinks to the bottom and there is less pigmented fluid on the top. The paint color can vary if you take more of the pigment from the bottom. I've only noticed this on some of the metallic paints like Liberator Gold and Brass Scorpion. Shaking is not enough to mix the paint properly. Just have to take in to account.

Thanks for the comments! Currently painting jetbikes.

Yep, you can get these small metall balls (best way to describe them) that you can add to a bottle - if you shake it with that it *will* mix properly, I promise

Update time!

Finished Shield Captain in Allarus Armor and rest of the Allarus Custodians. After that I based the rest of the finished miniatures. The airbrushing of the bases had some setbacks when a Vallejo dropperbottle blew up in my face when I squeezed it too hard :/ Most of the bases suffered collateral damage and I had to start airbrushing from the beginning. But at least the finished bases look good :smile.: I added some dropped leaves to these new bases and left out the normal static grass and only used tufts etc.

Only three more bikers to go for this 2000 p army. Then I can start adding FW stuff (although I do have Trajann to paint).

I also got them metal balls to better mix the paint and I do recommend them especially for metallic and lighter colored GW paints.

Holy moly, that's nice! Which custodian is the warlord though? :teehee:

Thanks for the comment. The Shield Captain on bike is my warlord (the one with no helmet). I have currently played with Custodes 3 games and my W/L is 2 losses (tau and admech) and one win (deathguard). As an eldar player the current army with no fw units really struggles, especially against tanks. But I feel that this army is more showcase rather than an effort to have an efficient army that performs on the tavletop. :)
