++ Unknown astartes, behind you ++

I've been lurking with my XX for a while now. This forum is part of what got me back into the hobby, and the Heresy in particular. Time to show and tell. Criticism or suggestions very welcome.

A little of what I fancy for the odd small game, ZM or killteam, no master list just rule of cool.

My Alphas are loyalist but maybe renegade, proud but unafraid of dishonour, and well equipped. Whatever gets the job done.

(Except bikes, because their rules make no sense to me.)

My scheme test, old 2nd edition starter set marine. Sotek Green ("green"!) armour, Palid Wytch Flesh helmets and weapons, lashings of Nuln oil. Tried metallics, hated painting them, and not keen on the scales.

Delegatus to lead. Baton from the scions kit, as is the power fist. Thinking of dropping the claw for an axe, and I'd like to build up a better base. Or start over with a better chest. And dull the gold again. (Retributor Gold is astonishing)

My sniper vets squad. A few power daggers thrown in for luck. MK4 plastics with a few bits from scouts, scions, and sternguard.

No markings or weathering. Will probably muddy the feet a little. The missing markings are just a lack of freehand confidence and general poor transfer game. I'd love neat little XX on the corner of the right shoulders.

Moritat, bashed together from a few chaos bits. Lots of skulls, and the chain is quite Alpha. DIY volkite from a grav pistol and a bit of sawn-off shotgun. He's been useless whenever I've run him, except for once when he put 7 unsaved wounds onto a lone Seeker.

Next: Finishing some plasma Cataphractii, rethinking a Vigilator so stealth he doesn't pop on the tabletop, a Knight Errant, an Exodus who's a little too plain, some Seekers in teal and black, and some close assault chaps in teal and white. Unsure if they'll be vets or a command squad - shame the vets can't take jump packs. Keen to try mashing up few bits of Vanguard Vets and Deathwatch with the Heresy plastics, keeping it era appropriate. That Necron sword seems pretty Alpha to me...

What do we think of assault vets now they're +1ws? Load out suggestions? Venom Spheres, sabres, couple of power swords, power fist and dagger combo, and a few redshirts? I'd like to try and model them as duellists with sword and dagger combos if they're not getting jump packs.

Later: Wishing up decent headhunters (assault 2 banestrike!), trouble with transfers, and eyeing up a dread.

I really like your scheme, nice teal colour and the white helmets really make them stand out. My trouble with Alpha Legion is there's so many nice schemes for them, I don't know which to go with! Teal, metallics, I think I'm gonna go with a dark almost purple indigo for mine though.

Glad y'all like the scheme, took a few trials to find, but I like being able to draw the eye to the face.

@Nightmare84 - I'll be doing variations on this, black pads for seekers, maybe white sword arms for assault vets.

@fire golem - There are loads of fun possibilities. I went with what I most enjoyed painting, and Sotek Green is a really strong shade to layer up and blend.

@skinrider - 2nd ed marines forever. Still got a few that didn't get turned into blotchy blood angels 20 years ago. And 40 identical gretchin...

I never thought of Alpha Legion looking this way until I opened this thread, and now I'm gonna picture them like this a lot. I'll echo what everyone else said, love the color scheme, especially the white helmets. The lighter color scheme almost makes me think of them as loyalists on sight. Plus, the yellow eye lenses are a nice touch. Look forward to seeing more!

++ Exodus, maybe ++

Two fellas I'm a little unhappy with aspects of, interested to see what people think.

On the left, Exodus. I built the gun first, parts from a grav gun, hotshot lasgun, and a banner pole, and then added to a fairly basic MK4 marine. He's got a natty bracelet, dagger, and special ammo belt across his chest. He's in the same bright teal as the rest. Too bright, too plain?

On the right, a Vigilator. Bashed together from the Calth chaplain, with leg, head, and hand swaps. I wanted that cloak. He's very dark blue, and cloak is grey, dirty, with a hint of green. The leg swap was tricky, managed to save the original legs to use on one of my Vets, and cover the new join with some grenades and a special ammo belt.

My Cataphractii squad painted up, with bright orange claws.

One combi melta, two combi-plasma, and one plasma repeater, which is just two plasma guns trimmed and attached.

Now just waiting for deathwatch spruces to turn up to harvest for parts for Seekers.

I really like the bright orange power claws. If it was me I'd probably just do the 'fingers' and leave the rest of the glove teal but either way it really pops off the models. I think this kind of contrast, especially in an otherwise quite subdued scheme, really makes for something awesome, really strong, menacing focal point.

Some awesome kit bashing on skills show here. I initially thought the rifle on Exodus (above) was from anvil industry. Great work! I like the simplicity of your designs. It works so well for the XXth, I'm Alpharious don't forget.

Thanks for the feedback. I am going to look again at the Cataphracti orange fingers, and rethink Exodus colours after I've done my Seekers.

Have been having fun kitbashing with the Deathwatch kits. Don't really like the bolters but love the wrist computers and chest pouches.

Here are a couple of WIP dry fits. My Seeker leader, who was supposed to look like he's signalling the team, but perhaps just looks like he's waving at the enemy.

"Hey, Dude, over here..." *blam*

The other is an attempt at an apothecary with no suitable parts. Scion needle pistol and terminator chainfist, plus adding some grenades and pouches to waist which will be painted like vials. May add a tabard too. Chainfist needs to look a touch more medical I think, trying to find a tiny spike. Any ideas for medical look parts?

Try looking at the missiles you get in the 40k Tactical squad kits? With a bit of trimming, I've seen them put to good use in this manner. :)

First of my seekers painted up. Black pads and green stripes for all their helmets. Pads painted skavenblight dinge and then washed and glazed black to get some subtle gradient over the curve. Enjoyed finding a new approach to black which I usually hate painting.

Mk4 marines mixed with Deathwatch and Sternguard parts. Lots of chest ammo. I really liked the Deathwatch wrist auspex so they've all got them. Not easy getting the deathwatch right arms into two arm bolter poses but just about managed with the odd dab of greenstuff.

I like the wrist auspex and the bolter, but what I really, really like is the basing. It is simple, scales well while also having a bit of colour to it without drawing attention. How did you do it?

Love the orange fingers idea, not so hot on the left guy. His legs look too small but that may be just the angle. Aren't deathwatch Marines a little bigger?

@Rangaman - thanks, bases are very basic though. Stirland mud texture paint, black wash, dry brushed Mournfang brown, and then again lightened with a bone colour. I tend to drybrush over the feet too for a dusty weathered finish. Delighted with the GW texture paints, don't miss my bags of sand and static grass I used in the 90s.

I sometimes glue the feet to tiny spruce stilts to just lift characters up slightly and cover it with texture paint so they don't look sunk in the mire. On larger bases I add the odd putty rock. Found a light green or purple wash on rocks helps add depth.

@Terminus - those are Vanguard legs, I think the angle makes them look small. But not a mock-up I think I'll take forward. Mainly love the helmet and that pistol for a doc.

I have been using Deathwatch parts though and have found they mostly fit perfectly. Legs just seem straighter not bigger. DW torso backs go on mk4 fronts with only tiny neck trim and the belt daggers look great for Alphas.

What I have found though is the DW backpack mount seems deeper, so it sticks out more than usual.
