Excellent work GRC smile.png

Always nice to see you dropping by, Arkley. Thanks!

Me likey!!! Me likey alot! I may use the knee colouring on my Sgts. I like the way it breaks up the monotony of the black armour. The white / bone colour on the helmets of the Termie's is a nice subtle touch too.

Thanks mate. The bone helmets are actually according to fluff. I thought it would be nice to try it out. The outcome was surprisingly nice.

Beautiful work there GRC! It's amazing how a simple wash can really bring the color to life.

Are you having more success with your light box now?

Thanks! I might use washes more often as end-layer now, since I've seen GW doing the same thing with their tutorials.

I'm still having trouble with models in the corners. The right terminator is still slightly blurry, despite endless fiddling with the lights and settings. But it's definitely an improvement already, at least compared to previous pictures. I'll get the hang of it eventually. biggrin.png

Move the camera away a bit and use the optical zoom to get back close, that sometimes helps with the edge focus.

For the accurate colour capture, it's a mix of the camera sensor and the monochrome background. The camera needs a lot of colours in the pic to balance correctly, the white background often confuses the computer.

Maybe try putting a piece of many coloured card in front of the minis as you half press to focus, then holding the shutter button remove the card and complete the press, always use the timer function too ;) Or more simply just use a nice terrain piece to get the camera to balance. Up to you.

Also means the shutter can be open longer without distorting the image, which in turn means you can use less light, which with some cameras is a good thing... finding the balance is the key. The focus card will help to standardise things too, or else every group of minis will force the camera to set differently. I learned this the hard way... and did a course after that tongue.png

Really nice squads, after seeing the bone heads on the terminators I may have to try one out on my terminators and also a bit late of a reply, but on the subject of terminators I haven't gotten around to finishing any squads yet, things keep getting in the way.

  • 2 weeks later...

And yet again, I forgot to post my updates. Oh well, time to compress it in one post.

Started with the next 10-man squad of infantry. The previous one was a squad with plasma and combi-plasma, this one will be flamer with combi-flamer. To break up the mono poses, I included some guys with alternative stances. The plan is to mix them up with other squads, and to have recognisable guys for guys of killteam.

And here the are. Chainswordguy is the Combat Specialist, dude with scoped bolter is weapon specialist, meltabomb is the Dirty fighter, Ammo crate is indomitable specialist and the one with the binoculars is the guerilla specialist. The Sarge recived a powersword/dagger for the 1 in 6 chance that he gets to choose a specialistrule.

That is a great looking squad, very dynamic poses!  I really like the reverse grip on the sergeant and the bone accents make him really stand out.  My favorite pose would have to be Ammo Crate Guy.  Great work on the bases too!  The grass on the 32 mm bases looks natural.  I am going to start to switch my army over!

Brilliant!

The painting is nice too - however, it took me a few reads to spot what the the specialist on the far right had in his hand (binoculars). happy.png

Thanks! I love Ammo Crate Guy, that one was my favorite from the start. It looks like he's defending his lunchbox with his life. The bases aren't anything special. They are easy and I like how it looks. I dread the day when they won't make my texture anymore laugh.png. Be carefull with that grass, after you use it for your bases, you'll find it everywhere! Seriously, keep it away from any area where you usually airbrush!

That's the worst mini IMO. The arm was suposed to be lower so you could see the binocs, but the grenades were in the way. The downside of painting in subassemblies. I even had to shave down one mini because the powerpack didn't fit anymore. I hate using the knife on a fully painted mini dry.png

GreyRavenC:

I share many of Epher's thoughts. The grass nicely compliments the various red parts, which you've balanced perfectly. Great poses.

Are all these parts from Betrayal at Calth?

Thanks for sharing.

FC

Thank you FC! The marines are all from Betrayal at Calth. The only foreign parts are the extra bits they are holding. The powersword, ammo crate, binoculars, scanner, scope and converted meltabomb are from the various marinekits.

A nice squad, I really like the inverted swordhand on the sergeant, nice!

Thank you, that sword has given me quite the headache. It's nicknamed 'Snappy Sword'. That thing kept breaking during painting, and aligning it again was a huge pain in the buttocks. My last attempt made the sword a bit bendy, but it's hardly noticable. Anyway, it looks better than the stock sword arm, so I'm pleased with the result.

*Sigh* Getting hold of Apothecary-bits is troublesome. It are the only parts that are sold out on my usual bitzshop and the Veterankit doesn't have it. I've been tempted by the upgradesprue of the black knights, but are a couple of bits worth the price of a full box? Decisions, decisions,...

I feel your pain! :(

I suppose you could convert the Apothecary instead? Using trimmed-down missiles and grenades as the geneseed phials on his belt, spare Tartaros* chainfists cut down and combined with a Genestealer Cults needle pistol for the Reductor, and some Terminator lamps for the backpack searchlight, and finally a suitable Devastator/targeter head. For the Prime Helix, you could just freehand one or press-mould it off another model?

It sounds like a lot, but when you actually break it down, it's not too bad, and it does give you a nice archaic-looking version of the traditional Apothecary's equipment.

Another source of bits might be the Blood Angels Sanguinary priest, which is also conveniently robed (if a bit Blood Angel-ey).

*Because you're clearly going to be buying a Burning of Prospero box, aren't you? ;)

Already bought one laugh.png

It was my intention to outfit a squad as veterans/command squad with grav-guns (since I have nothing of the sort yet), a squad as assault and maybe a regular tactical one. But I hate bare plastic, so I'll finish my B@C first before I start with my new box. One contemptor, one squad and 6 heavy weapons to go.

I'm only mentioned the knights because I took a look at all the bits included. There are some many juicy bits in there, but I couldn't care less for the bikes/bikers themselves. I might buy the box anyway and give the bikers to a interested frater.

Edit: And thanks Raztalin! I almost skipped your post! Shame on me

I almost did it again. So to prevent the 'Woosh Woosh' this time:

I didn't feel comfortable cutting up such a wicked mini, but I couldn't really hold back for Arkley's challenge. Let's see if it pays off.

Grc, what's his badge?

It was a consecrators-badge. But alas, I had some issues with fitting it on the shoulders, so I replaced it with a studded pad. It seemed approriate for a dedicated Champion. Wouldn't want any dents in your emblem.

Grc, what's his badge?

The dreaded Roll for Blind Chapter, feared by all foes with sensitive eyes.

Captain Semper made me love Consecrators and I love yours too! Especially the upside-down sword on the sergeant.

Thank you! You should check out Dark Rage's Consecrators as well, his guys inspired mine laugh.png

It's good to know that the sergeant is appreciated, he was the biggest pain in the buttocks. I'm glad it paid off.
