Wrt the possible other battles in Attrition, Blunt was suggesting an Army vs Army battle - do we have something planned for the First Terra Heredes at this period of time? And do we have any possible antagonists? A traitor regiment without particular bonds to a legion (ie, not something like the Madrigal regiments and co.)

I have a few ideas - though to be honest, it looks like most Army battle groups take in multiple regiments so we should have a few forces to play with.

I'd quite like to see at least one regiment well on its way to being corrupted by the chaos gods, but in a disciplined manner (like the blood pact or the sons of sek)
Since khorne and Tzeentch both have something similar, and nurgle also got some fun stuff from Vraks I think, I'd quite like to see a Slaaneshi version (more classically slaaneshi than the Drowned)
Perhaps some slaaneshi roughriders? Im sort of imagining something like Krieg, with the gas masks, but they actually contain hallucinogens, and they also use different kinds of gases around them

A bit early for that, I think - I was leaning more towards specialisations and cultures.

How about Khmer Empire / Majapahit / Srivijaya ? They'd be suitably flamboyant examples for a later fall to Slaanesh

Wouldn't hurt to set up factions for later

Is Nox in Expansion since it's close to the Madrigal Sphere?

Well, why is it in Expansion then?

A side note, I had intended the first battle of Xandria to not be in Secession, but rather the last section of a book on the Cognis-Suzerainty campaigns. Might that be too much to focus on the two factions alone?

I'm not sure if there are going to be that many campaigns for the Suzerainty in the black books (at least in the first batch), so yeah it may be a bit much to have a whole book on the Suzerainty vs Cognis

In which case it'll probably be best to intergrate the first stage (the destruction of Cognis holdings such as Cyclothrathe within Suzerainty territory) into Secession. I'll figure out how to deal with the later stages another time.

Where should we put the Predators' betrayal? That's a key event to the Insurrection, and I've basically promised it in their own Red Book. It could go in Escalation or Recantation, where it might fit better thematically.

It's pretty late in the Insurrection.

Also, Blunt has suggested we don't have an entire anthology since it would essentially be repeating the same story twice. Instead, have little moments here and there. I agree with this.

I think a story anthology could be good, but I wouldn't put it in the Black Books.

Just a note on the Cognis: I don't want the battle of Xandria in secession, but I would like their fighting withdrawal as the Suzerainty makes their initial move to drive Insurrectionist forces from their territory.

The Cognis counteroffensive and the attack on Xandria can both be slotted into later books.

Again, the First Battle of Xandria should not be in Secession. The Suzerainty-Cognis battles in it might not even constitiute a single camaign in itself but just be part of the consolidation campaigns in Suzerainty space.

Do you mind adding a word count to the completed and in-progress sections?

Proposotion:

Secession-Battle of Grail
Factions-Steel Legion and Cognis Mechanicum
Background-Early on in the Insurrection a Cognis Explorator Fleet returns from the outer dark to land on the Relic world of Grail, holding it long enough to be reinforced by the Cylclorathine Mechanicum. Discoveries on the planet see significant resour es directed towards research there.

When the Suzerainty seceeds, each Legion seeks tp eliminate Insurrectionist threats within their territories. The Steel Legion strikes Cyclorathe first, and after a struggle bombard it from orbit and declare it quarantined. This, as well as the fall of M'Pandex (loyal to Kelbor Hal), give the Cognis upon Grail time to fortify and prepare for evacuation, leading to a fierce battle between the i infospheric hive mind of the Mechanicum and the electronic communion of the Steel Legion.

Purpose-To show the Suzerainty consolidating its territory and introduce the Cognis as a fighting force.

An additional note for secession could be the reverse purging of Suzerainty elements deemed to have been too tainted by chaos to trust.

Edit: Refined a sequence of events for the opening stages with Nomus.

In preparation for the attack on Grail (before the Secession has begun) a Steel Legion delegation visits the planet, ostensibly under the orders of the Stormlord to check on or assist in the ongoing research. Such is seen as a breach of Cognis sovereignty and the delegation is soon withdrawn because of the hostile reception. Their true purpose however has been achieved. It is the nature of Grail that its full surface cannot be fully secured, and when -weeks later - a series of raids by Astartes in grey armour occurs it is simply presumed to be another incidence of the marauders that plague the Grail Abyss. Appropriate protocols are activated, and it is not realised until far to late that the raiders do not adhere to the tactical methodology of such raiders.

With much of their strength, occupied in attempts to pacify the wider Grail Abyss or respond to anomalous reports elsewhere, the Krypteia who have waited on the planets surface strike at full force. Though it costs them dearly, they succeed in slaughtering the present astropathic quire and destroying the long range vox arrays. At the same time, a Steel Legion strike force emerges on the sytems edge. The strength of the Cognis forces has however been underestimated, and it is only due to the information provided by the surviving Krypteia that the Astartes are able to withdraw from the surface without severe losses. Infuriated, the Cognis believe that they have been subject to an isolated event, an escalation of the existing tensions between the Steel Legion and the Cognis. It is only when battered and mauled Cyclothrathine Arks arrive that they become aware of the Suzerainty's secession and the destruction of the Cyclothrathe holdings. They know that a far greater Steel Legion fleet will not be far behind the Mechanicum survivors. Despite this, the tech-priests are determined to wring Grail of its secrets until the very last moment, as well as provide an evacuation point for any Cyclothrathe worthies, data-banks or relics that might yet make their way to Grail. With couriers now available, the forces across the Grail Abyss are recalled to Grail itself. A vicious campaign is mounted to scour the world of any remaining threats and fortify the planet as much as possible in preparation for the coming siege.
