Are we going to get more 30k IF novels before the Siege?

I know the Imperial Fists are getting a lot of attention in the 40k novel series The Beast Arises, but is there likely to be any 30k novels focussing on the Fists before the Siege of Terra?

In the current 30k fluff, the majority of the IF's forces are in two major locations, Terra (Dorn's own forces) and Ultramar (Alexis Polux's Retribution Fleet that was mistakenly diverted to Ultramar).  This leaves open two major things they could be doing before the Siege:

  • Alexis Polux could become bored sitting around Ultramar, decide to believe that Dorn's order to return to Terra was legitimate after all, and either strike out on his own to find his way past the Ruinstorm or otherwise join the three Imperium Secundus Primarchs on their quest to find a way out of the Ruinstorm.
  • Dorn and his forces will have to defend against another assault on the Sol System or Terra itself before Horus' main forces arrive.

Polux's fleet doesn't have much in the way of opportunities to get into the action, since by Book 39 the War in Imperium Secundus has been conclusively won by the Loyalists.  Dorn however does have a few more opportunities for trouble to come to him (he and his forces can't leave the Sol System after all) and keep him and his IFs from alternately twiddling their thumbs and preparing ever more fortifications. Who might those troublemakers be? Below are a few possibilities.

  • The Alpha Legion has had their turn and been driven out.  It's unlikely any other Traitor Legion could appear in the Sol System "ahead of schedule" without going out of character. That said, we shouldn't discount the possibility of Alpha Legion agents still being in the Sol System to make things easier for other traitor forces.
  • The Dark Mechanicus on Mars haven't been doing much lately, and they're "right next door" to Terra.  Given that The Beast Arises novel series shows that the Martians had access to large-scale, long-distance teleportation devices in M32, it's possible that they could teleport their own forces right to the surface of other planets in the Sol System.  If they do manage to launch their own early incursion against Terra it could be a reference to H.G Wells' War of the Worlds novel (where Martians invade Earth with big war machines), kind of like how Deathfire was a reference to The Odyssey.
  • A Daemonic incursion against Terra or elsewhere in the Sol System.  We know that there's a continuing Daemonic battle going on underneath the Golden Throne on Terra, but that doesn't mean the Daemons can't show up elsewhere.  Maybe some of the Alpha Legion agents still around have cross-trained with the Word Bearers in Daemon-summoning, so they could summon a lot of them and give the Imperial Fists an opportunity to deploy their long-idle Librarians, or even show the local Knights-Errant acting like the proto-Grey Knights they are (as the Imperium's premier Anti-Chaos forces).

Anyone got any ideas?  If the Black Library authors decide to go with a Daemonic incursion, FW might even ask the authors to include one of their four super-daemons (one of the four Chaos Gods' strongest daemons around) as an excuse to bring one of them into a campaign book.  That's something I'd like to see.

I think something to do with Mars is the most likely. That plot has just sort of been sitting there for years, Dorn could start being more proactive in his dealing with it. Nothing would be stopping that from having an Alpha Legion sub-plot either.

I think any daemonic incursion would probably find greater focus in Master of Mankind than a Dorn book.

With Cybernetica and Myriad recently, I get the impression we're being led to another Martian civil war book in the future, presumably by Rob Sanders. So maybe some IF involvement there.

I feel like Sigismund's arc is not finished. He barely appeared in Praetorian of Dorn, which was in fairness Dorn and Archamus's story. Might be room for him to get a novel/novella or something.

Exactly. But we will see more IF before Siege of Terra - cause Horus need to get through all the defense lines in Solar system before he even arrive in Terra's orbit.

Are you implying that there are still Loyalist Mechanicus left on Mars after Book 39?

Anyway, we know that Sigismund was sent to Mars to loot some weapons and armour in a lightning raid.  After Path of Heaven, we know that the White Scars have joined up with the Space Wolves near Terra, and with 3 loyalist legions near the Sol System I suppose now's as good a time as any for the Emperor's 3 full-size legions to make a more concerted strike against Mars, which Sigismund might be given command over (from the Emperor, to override Dorn's distaste for his disowned First Captain).  At least before the Space Wolves get sent away to miss the Siege of Terra.

I would still like to see the Dark Mechanicum on Mars make strikes against the loyalists in the Sol System soon.   They've got some pretty terrifying archeotech weaponry and robotic legions of their own just sitting around doing nothing, plus the long-range teleporters I mentioned!  If Mars does send its forces against Terra, it'd be good if some of the older characters think to themselves "Is this the War against the Men of Iron all over again?".

Unless earlier canon gets changed, we know that only the Blood Angels, the White Scars, and the Imperial Fists are the only Loyalist Legions available on Terra once the Siege of Terra gets started (i.e., once the Traitor Forces get within the orbit of Luna). Horus has his own Sons, the Emperor's Children, the Death Guard, the World Eaters, the Iron Warriors, the Word Bearers, and possibly the Alpha Legion (who might not be on speaking terms with Horus anymore).  The Night Lords were crippled in the War against Ultramar, and the Thousands Sons have washed their hands of collaboration with Horus.

Three Loyalist Legions can't stand against that kind of firepower in open battle, so in all likelihood Dorn will only be able to execute delaying actions and disruptive raids against the traitors in space, who will be making all haste to Terra (with possibly a brief stopover at Dark-Mechanicus-controlled Mars to resupply and rearm).  So there's not much Dorn can do aside from delay the inevitable at that point.

Dorn has given Sigismund the command of the First Sphere Defense within Sol. He's basically stationed in and around the orbit of Pluto.

There are indeed loyalist Mechanicum forces on Mars, they're shown in Myriad. Small partisan forces, isolated cells and the like. They're crying out for some sort of aid, either from another loyalist forge world or from Terra. Malcador and Dorn already sent that Knight Errant RG techmarine. He died but there's precedent. Considering what he unleashed, I think we're in for exactly what you mentioned re: war against AI.

We will see how it goes eventually. Cause it would be very hard to write. From one point of view you need to show competent demi-God Horus, from other competent defenders and not kill famous characters like Sigismund over Pluto orbit. I don't envy a persons who will be given a Solar war to write.

Comparing to that even 'Siege of Terra' would be easier - you know who dies at last and who will live (and how they achieve that)

I'm honestly hoping for

1. another WS vs. DG/EC novel focusing on the battle for the Lion's Gate Spaceport

2. a BA novel about how they get to Terra

3. an IF novel with a large focus on Sigismund during the Siege

Book no. 3 would be a great set up to the eventual Sig v. Ab clash planned by ADB

What about the massed Imperial armada, saturnine clans, Lunar bases. There are a lot of defences mentioned in PoD. They are capable on it's own

I just want to read Sigismund stomping on every Chaos Champion he comes across, then taking down Khárn smile.png

I know this is highly unlikely...

but perhaps Sig vs. Sev R2 at the palace

But that will happen - as quickly mentioned in 'Khârn the Betrayer'. He will die by Sigi hand

I can see the next advertisement trailer from BL now.

"Hey Imperial Fist and other Heresy fans! We're so thrilled that you guys loved the latest novel and want more of the heroes in yellow! Upcoming in the next 8 novels and novellas is Curze Curze and mooooore Curze. You've seen him torture Vulcan. Beat the Crap out of the Lion, Troll Guillimen, Get into the head of Sanguinius, Scare the poop out of Corax, Claw the bejeezus out of the Dorn. Six

loyalist primarchs down and only two left to go in Russ and the Khan(Don't worry cause we will show flashbacks of him "tickling Ferrus!") See it all unfold in Imperium Trinitum..us.
