DBH's Carmine Blades

Dont-Be-Haten

Recommended Posts

Hey guys I don't know where else to post this, so I made this thread. What is one thing you might like to see from my Carmine Blades?

So far here is how I'm painting tacticals etc.
Traditional BA armor with white helmets, squad and company markings from BA. I will not be doing the traditional BA helmet swaps such as blue for Devis, gold for Vets etc.

Death company; Traditional Black power armor with white helmets or no helmets.

Flesh will be light slightly warm skin tones.

Thoughts on a homebrewed Chapter master?

Do you think I should make them look more aggressive, more reserved? I can't get my first squad to load on photobucket right now but when I do, I'll give you all some pictures.

Sounds cool. I'm working on my "Snow Angels" which will be all white with hand made snow/ruin bases. The Chaplain Commander of course will be Lord Jon Snow. haha

If you can get that link I'd like to check them out.

Oh and if you don't have a good method to paint white yet (I learned this the hard way from weeks of trial and error) use Ulthuan Grey from the Citadel Air line and then do edge highlights with Skull White or whatever its called these days. It actually looks 10 times better than flat white and the citadel air line is very thin so it paints well, you just have to do a few coats. Cheers!

Cheers! I actually posted  How-to on painting my helmets white several months ago. It's lost somewhere in on this Sub-Forum. I've already decided that my Deathwatch will be full of black shields and I'll be stoked to make the Night's Watch company of the Death Watch. Sounds wicked though with an all white armor scheme!

I wish I had found your tutorial about 2 weeks ago. My first attempts I took the advice of some youtube painters and worked the paint up to white starting from a tan color (Army Painter Tan spray) and used brown wash in the recesses and it looked terrible. The white turned out chunky from all the layers and the brown didn't look crisp in the detail. It just looked like someone with a shaky hand tried to paint the recesses. And even when I repaint them those test models will look bad.

Now I use the method above and it looks pretty good I think. I'm using Nuln Oil in the recesses because it flows very well and the black is much more striking than the brown was. I hope to post pics soon too when I'm done with my Sanguinary Guard.

I might steal your Nights Watch idea some day since it fits with my theme as well. Now that the hobby and comp scores are returning to tournaments in the US I would like to make a display board with them surrounded by Bloodletters painted up to look like White Walkers.

Got any vehicles on the go?

(Would search but on mobile right now)

Rhino is in the works. As well as the drop pod to be finished from Rage to Salvation.

@Spiros picked them up from a 3-D printing company Shapeways worth the purchase!

Wow those look great! Excellent work. The white looks very clean and the dark recesses make it look striking as well. I bet you'll get some painting acknowledgement for sure if you go to any tournaments next season.

You definitely inspired me to get moving on my guys. I just received my BA Assault Terminators and Death Co Strike force in the mail so I had to put painting on the back burner for a bit to do some assembly, but I think I'll complete a single model outright this week so I can post it here and again when the squad is done.

Glad you all like it! I'm really stoked about how keen these boys in red look. The Transfers really give it some pop too. I'll hopefully be painting a lot tomorrow, fingers crossed I get my Rage to Salvation completed along with this squad so I can work on my captain. Will possibly be working on a command squad as well!

  • 2 weeks later...

All this week leading up to Holiday has been 10-12 hour work days. I haven't even thought about painting as I've worked, gotten home, spent an hour or so with the wife, and fallen asleep. Before I knew It was early morn'n and time to rinse and repeat. Before the week got so hectic I did receive my fancy Assault TDAs, and I primed a 5 man squad of Space Hulk terminators. My Drop Pod is still looking good (I'm going to finish the damned thing I promise!).  now I find myself on a 4-5 hour drive today to the coast, putting the Carmine Blades  be on the back burner for a few days, as we de-stress.

However, to keep motivation going I knew I was going to be working on the OIF and a Command Squad alongside my captain. My plan was to use some of my old metal figures for the command squad, such as a Metal Assault Sanguinary Priest and one of my all time favorite models. The Emperor's Champion. My problem though is how can I justify him not having a combat shield so he can represent my Blood Champion. I thought about giving him a storm shield but that just seems like too much work for a metal model. The Simple Solution would be to put one of the shoulder wings or a fancy backpack which might represent a sliver of the Angel, in essence a piece of Sanguinius armor Honored to the newly found Carmine Blades to be worn by their chapter's champion. which gives a 6++ the same as a combat shield. I know it isn't WYSIWYG but I've never had a problem with something like this before. Do you think random-opponents would mind? Certainly it would need to be cleared with a TO if I ever took a demi-company to a tournament, in which case I will probably just kit bash a company champion and make him a veteran sergeant with a power sword.

Thoughts from you all on this, and how do you feel about a chain fist splashed into the Tactical TDA. I personally think it is great for a little extra power on vehicles/armor. On this note, I can't decide on what load out I want to do, I've taken the Heavy Flamer but the Assault cannon seems like the better option, however I do play against a lot of cover-huggers, and this is why I've decided to incorporate the heavy flamer over the assault cannon. Though that Missile back pack does seem quite good too! Open to thoughts! Cheers!

New assault squad comes with an armless combat shield. Attach it, or another shield to the back of his clenched fist?

Chainfist is always welcome in a tda unit, a cheap insurance weapon. Hard call on the weaponry. All are useful and balanced for cost. Depends if the rest of your army is lacking flamers, really. Asscan gives them more utility.

When I get back I will look into trying to add it to the Champion. With the extra stormshields from the Fancying TDAs I think the smaller squaresque one would look good. If it doesn't fit or look good to me I'll more than likely just do a "counts-as"

If I didnt have a huge collection and my own successor, I totally would've gone carmine when the new dex came out.

ULTIMATE excuse to use C:SM allies/ gear :P

Looking sweet - love the custom pads!

My DIY also hasn't always known their heritage, so I'm stealing this ides, haha! I have some models I can't use as BA so this gives me a reason to.

Looking for some advice. About to start painting tactical TDAs. At first I thought I was going to paint the TDA white with red helmets, but I decided to go red with white. My question is what color should the power fists be? Traditional Black? Red? I thought about hazard stripe but I think that might class too much with my paint scheme. Thoughts from you all?

If the armor is red, I vote black or white. I feel like power fists deserve to pop.

Troops are looking awesome, but I'd hit them with another point shade of agrax in the recesses in the armour, just to really make them stand out. It's a bit of a sea of red at the moment, and it'll make the highlights really stand out.

I'll try hitting it again later, when I look at it from not LED lights, it doesn't look like it needs any work done to it. But I'll check it out.

I have this problem a lot. Every time I take pictures it's either too dark and you can't see any detail or its too bright and everything's washed out.
