Necromunda Upcoming?

With GW bringing out alot of older games (including games like Mordheim and Battlefleet Gothic to PC) the idea isent to far fetched to suggest they might bring Necromunda back.

If they will though, im not to sure.... Maybe as a limited edition box?

Personally, I would prefer that two gangs be included in a theoretical starter box. We could all probably state which two specific gangs we might like, but I don't see any point in that discussion. My only criteria would be that the two gangs be distinct from each other.

Then I'd like to see Arbites included in a standalone game facing a Genestealer Cult, with add-on rules for using the Arbites as Enforcers in Necromunda (sort of like how they included a bunch of special missions and such in the first issue of the rebooted White Dwarf magazine).

Then I'd like to see each other gang available as an expansion box - a complete gang in a box - for Necromunda, including a small booklet with their specific rules.

My basic guess is that we'll see two factions in a limited box, whether two gangs or one gang and Enforcers. Beyond that, though, I'm just wish-listing.

My real question concerns the terrain - will we see the old cardboard terrain, or will we see something else? If something else, we might see a step down to 2D tiles, like in the recent games; or we might see a step up to plastic terrain. My bet is that we'll see the step down to 2D tiles, which would be a real shame because part of the great depth of "old" Necromunda was 3D tactics on different levels.

So my cynical bets are a starter box with two rival factions and 2D tiles. While that would be satisfactory, sort of, I would really love if GW goes above and beyond with this one. Necromunda rules could provide a strong basis for a real squad skirmish level of wargame instead of the bare bones rules we got with Kill Team.

The hobbit laketown building shows that they can easily do 3D terrain for these games in plastic ^^

Hmmm...

What if they did multiple starter boxes with different gang matchups...

Technically they did that with 40k already...

Dark vengeance...

Deathstorm...

Death masque...

Killteam sortof...

Each came with the core rules, and some form of campaign rules... (dice and templates? Not in all cases...)

It's funny, but I actually think they is one of the key reasons that Necromunda did get dropped and not re-done. I know there was a phase where GW wanted to wean everybody off the "specialist games", but I do actually think that Necromunda provided a fairly lucrative line of 40k-compatible figures and interest that didn't actually impinge on the main 40k game (unlike Mordheim, which had a pretty major crossover with WHF in terms of figures and factions).

I sadly see it imagined as a 2D board game experience, perhaps even going backwards a little to a more Confrontation-style setting where the Underhive was a much more cramped environment. It's not for nothing that Tears of Envy was re-hired full-time by GW as a lead graphic designer, and the recent glut of boardgames they've subsequently released has certainly shown this to be a real possibility.

Then again, with GW making plastic ruins to support FW's re-launch of Adeptus Titanicus (and of course the Goblin Town terrain mentioned above), it might not be too far-fetched to hope for similar terrain to be in Necromunda. How much, of what quality, and whether it will be compatible with the Sector Imperialis kits, I really wouldn't want to even guess at (although if it did follow the Sector Imperialis stuff's skull-laden style, I wouldn't be too surprised either). If they do go this route, I would not expect a lot of terrain in the box, and instead foresee terrain pack add-ons available from Day 1 of launch.

...Of course, if GW decided to revive the bulkheads (compatible with the 1995 ones) and cardboard levels/walkways, I think I might just lose my mind (and savings)! :D

The idea of Mordheim coming next year is pretty exciting, so thanks for that tidbit!

Something to consider is that a lot of the people working in GW these days (both in design and in sculpting) are people who grew up playing these games and remember them fondly like we do, and as such they'll want to retain the things that made the originals so good in the first place. I fully expect that when Necromunda is re-imagined it will still be a 3d game, probably with a card-walkways-plastic-bulkheads system in the box, but i could totally see them doing plastic terrain kits for it. There's so much potential for crossover sales into 40k that it would almost be daft not to.

Necromunda just wouldn't be the same on a 2D board, I think most aficionados would just use any new minis and carry on playing with the old rules/scenery.

I'd be perfectly happy with a redo of the plastic bulkheads/cardboard, although it'd be nice if the card was a touch thicker so it wouldn't bend (thin sheets of laser cut mdf would also work, like the sets you get on eBay?). Keeping the size of the bulkheads the same but with some new designs would also mean you could mix and match old and new.

If they turn Necromunda into a 2D game il gladly take the models that came with it and play with the old rules dry.png without the 3d aspect the game just wouldnt be the same...

Btw, doesent blood bowl share a big of the campaign and after battle book keeping that Mordheim and Necromunda had? If bloodbowl becomes a succes (and at the very least it will be at my local store laugh.png I know that much) then the other games might defenitly make a reappearance as well wub.png

We can only hope

  • 2 weeks later...

I play Necromunda regularly. And I'm all about the original plastic figures. So, the idea of plastic arbites in a starter box is super-exciting for me (as all the existing models, to my knowledge, are metal). Oh, and I use Space Crusade space marines in Necromunda. Somebody mentioned the fluff and, originally, even terminators went into the underhive. And not only Imperial Fists...
