Warriors of Peace Unique Rite of War: The Art of Battle

Under the tutelage of their Primarch, many officers of the XVII Legion would come to approach war not simply as a duty, but as an art form to be mastered. The unified nature of the Warriors, combined with an extreme focus under pressure, allowed them to be wielded like a set of artisan’s tools in the hands of an astute commander. A favoured tactic that exemplified this was the use of mass infantry formations in which squads could combine to harness each other's strengths, and thus adapt their combat style to the ebb and flow of battle.

 

Effects

•Fight As One: When two units with the Legiones Astartes: Warriors of Peace special rule begin and end the movement phase within 2” of each other, they are considered to be linked. One linked unit in the pair gains a special rule based on the type of unit it is linked with:

–Troops: Counterattack

–Elites: Preferred Enemy(Infantry)

–Fast Attack: Fleet

–Heavy Support: Tank Hunters

Each special rule lasts until the end of the game turn. Linked pairs cannot consist of two of the same unit. Techmarines or Apothecaries cannot count toward this rule.

 

Limitations

•Whenever both units in a linked pair are completely destroyed during the same turn, the opposing side gains +1 Victory point.

•Detachments using this Rite of War must take an additional Compulsory Troops choice as part of their Force Organization chart.

•Detachments using this Rite of War may not take any allies except for Sworn Brothers on the Allies Matrix.

 

 

Okay, so I removed the limitation with about the FA, HS, and Elites choices, so may need to find a replacement. Or not. I'm hesitant to make the special bonuses available to allied units, since I see them as a product of the Warriors' specific training.

 

My biggest concern I suppose is with the special rules that get conferred? Do you guys think they should be stronger? Or different in some other ways? Any other suggestions?

Interesting. I'm with Grifft that it does lean heavily on bookkeeping. I think the special rules selected are fair, just needs a simpler trigger. Or, is there a current RoW like this?

Not sure how I would make the trigger simpler. My intention was to convey two squads temporarily "combining", so I'm not sure how to simplify that process. Or perhaps rather than simplifying the trigger, make it so both linked squads get a rule, that way you don't need to keep track of which squad has what?

Why? You gain special rules for thst linking. And similar units are mkre.likely to go through the same training regiment as opposed to heavy weapon and assault marines for example.

Part of the idea of the WoP as I understand it is that they are very good at being as coordinated as a single unit despite their different specialisms

^That's correct. The purpose of this Rite is to show coordination between different kinds of units and being able to use those unit's unique strengths. A tac squad can benefit from a heavy weapons squad, but two tac squads combining is just a big tac squad.

But that would somehow restrict their efficency in Battle.

 

In order to gain fleet, the jump pack.equipped unit has first to link to a heavy weapon squad stay in 2" for the turn and then the next turn they gain the special rule. It is like taking out the speed.

 

But I meant same army slots with each other. compulsory with compulsory, elite with elite, fast attsck with fast attack. So if assault marines link with jetbikes, or terminators with veterans, then you have not exactly the same units.

Would I be right in thinking that the Pariah nature of the Warriors has taken a less prominent role in their culture/battlefield tactics? I ask because I don't see any indicators (other than the colour schemes on the first page) that there are any Pariahs in their ranks. Is this intentional or do you expect to add a Pariah unit/character or addition to the Legion rules into the mix later on?

Well, we do have access to the Pariah consul. Pariahs within the Warriors are a bit more prevalent than librarians in other legions, but not to an extent where there is a noticeable impact on command structure or tactics. However, the legion culture I see as heavily influenced by pariahs. Warriors seek to purge themselves of strong emotions or attachments, they meditate to master inner peace, they train themselves to have almost inhuman focus, so in many ways, the Pariahs exemplify the ideals that they strive towards.

 

I'm not sure if I want to add a Pariah character, or just leave it at the Consul type, but they do play a role in the legion.

I had an idea for the False Primarch, and wasn't sure where else to put it down.

 

It is said that the False Primarch was beautiful, sharing in the noble countenance of the gene-brotherhood. Yet without a soul of the like which the Emperor wrought for His true sons, it was a terrible, hollow beauty; a perfection of symmetry and geometry that strays over the line and becomes a source of indefinable horror. Yet the void could not persist, and in time something began to fill the shell at the core of this hollow demigod. Something which would turn him into a monster unique among the terrors that assailed Mankind.

Note on the sword:

The General primarily fights with his power gauntlets and boots. However, he is a master of different styles of combat, and that includes different weapons. He doesn't use Obsidian Fang all the time, but it would be an alternate weapon that he wields quite a bit, sort of like Fireblade and the Sword of Laer for Fulgrim. So it'll probably feature in the fluff, and I might eventually add it as an option for Jade's rules.

The Warriors do make use of T-style visors, but I think a couple other legions might as well, maybe to a lesser degree. These visors are typically wide enough that the eye lenses are still visible.

 

Their Terminators would probably continue that styling, or have featureless, reinforced helms akin to Mk.III breachers.

Apologies if I've forgotten, but are the Warriors of Peace elites decided yet?

 

I like the idea of a Xiahou Dun or Dian Wei figure for the Terminators, assuming they form an elite formation. I do also like how varied our elites have become.

There's the Iron Monks, and there may be one more elite, depending on if I want to do 2 characters and 3 units or the other way around. If there is another elite unit, I'm not sure if they would be terminator-clad. 

 

Both of those figures sound like good options. I'd want to have a character in Terminator plate, but not sure if I have the slots for it.

Okay, figured it was high time I updated some rules, specifically the Warriors' signature weapon options.

 

Sinaean Weapons: Any character model with the Legiones Astartes (Warriors of Peace) special rule with the option to take a power weapon may instead take a single Sinaean Weapon at no additional cost.

 

Power Staff: S: +2, AP: 4, Melee, Two-Handed

Defensive Weapon: When fighting in close combat, a model using a power staff has a 6++ invulnerable save, or adds +1 to an existing invuln save.

 

Thunder Gauntlet: S: User, AP: 5, Melee, Specialist Weapon, Concussive

Dexterous: A model that uses a thunder gauntlet in the turn in which it charges gains +1 Weapon Skill for that turn.

 

Twin Tiger Hooks: S: User, AP: 3, Melee, Two-Handed

Disarm: A model that suffers a wound from this weapon must take an Initiative test. If failed, then for the remaining Initiative steps and following turn, the model cannot use the profile for its close combat weapon and may not gain an additional attack from wielding two close combat weapons. If the model has multiple weapons, the controlling player may choose which is lost.

 

Han Broadsword: S: +1, AP: 2, Melee, Specialist Weapon

Heavy: A model wielding this weapon may only have up to 2 attacks.

Rereading the story you wrote while back about the WoP training and a question occurred to me. How do the WoP view and treat their fallen? Do they see them as failures or do they honour them like other legions do? Or do they just not care, what with the dead being dead and all? And how does that tie into their treatment of dreadnoughts?
