Dantay, just added the painting recipe for bronze and grey in the first post but here it is too: Grey Painting Recipe: 1. Prime black 2. Apply a counter-zenithal basecoat of Vallejo German Grey 3. 'Sketch' where the highlights will be with Administratum Grey 4. Apply a basecoat of Mechanicum Standard Grey Air leaving the Vallejo German Grey in the recesses and don't obscure the sketeched highlights 5. Apply a 45° layer of Dawnstone Air 6. Re-Apply final highlights with Administratum Grey or do a very zenithal fine spray 7. Wash the model to give definition and tone down the highlights to blend them with all the armor with the following mixture: 4 ml Agrax Earthshade, 4 ml Nuln Oil, 12 ml Water 8. Glaze with Druchi Violet wash mixed with glaze medium the areas of shade* 9. Glaze with Blue wash mixed with glaze medium the deepest shadows* 10. Edge highlight with Administratum Grey * These two steps are to add richness to the palette of the armor, so I generally tend to reserve them for characters since they're quite time consuming. Bronze Painting Recipe: 1. Basecoat with several thin layers of Balthasar Gold 2. Generous filter of Agrax Earthshade (you can repeat this step another time for a more worn look) 4. Wash the recesses with Agrax Earthshade + Nuln Oil (1:1) 5. Edge highlight with Sycorax Bronze 6. Pin wash the recesses edges and rivets with diluted Nikilah Oxide to give a verdigris effect Just note in the posted picture I have yet to edge highlight and give the verdigris :) Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Dantay VI Posted November 24, 2016 Share Posted November 24, 2016 That pretty much made my day as besides the german grey & washes at the end, this is how I already do my Wolves esp the banner bearer and Jorgmundr , same for the bronze again you have applied the nihilakh as an extra step beyond what I do....Weirdly though your bronze is much deeper than mine. You also deserve another reply here as your efforts to making the Viking characters is so inspiring!! Brave man mate, doing the test on a Praetor.... But it's awesome, really nailed the colour. Wolves should be dark and brooding killers and you've nailed it dude!! They look so much better then the 40k scheme which I think is too bright, even the wolf stuff looks understated and realistic, just like a real Viking! Progress is slow but steady, it was a bit of a pain to get the head done trying to imitate Ragnar Lothbrok's scalp tattoos since they're so intricate, so had to focus on the larger forms/patterns and build from there. Does the pose look alright in the sense that his gaze is staring towards whatever he's shredding? I was limited by how the head with the braid fitted Khârn's armor when posing him. Also, as you can see, I am yet to finish the claw. Was wondering if I should go for a hard blue to white contrast or a more muted metallic tones ranging from silver to extreme shine and then give it some blue glazes. For some reason, the traditional blue to white power weapon highlighting technique screams more 40k than heresy for me since the 30th millennium is a more gritty and 'realistic' scene. I thought when first seeing Russ that he should have a beard, yours looks great. I'd stick with the more muted metallics on the claws, I'm not a fan of the "light sabre" style highlighting on power wepons, just my opinion, I'm sure yours will look great which ever scheme you choose. Dantay VI Posted December 5, 2016 Share Posted December 5, 2016 YES!!! Mastodon rocks and it is an absolute BEAST of a model. Painting blades, it is a black blue and leadbelcher mix, to make it nice and dark (I never start with pure black as it is too stark. I add increasing amounts of runefang steel as i go up the blade, to almost pure runefang. I then run a thin line of pure runefang around the blade edges the gem on the power node and the centre line. Then I make a blue glaze by mixing ardcoat and guillemann blue (keeps it shiny-ish, pure glaze will dry matte) until I get a nice blue I like Finally a thinner line along the edge, node and centreline to finish.
