bloodhound23
Hi- Lurker here. I've got an idea for a renegade company-sized warband based on some Badab War Marines who end up defecting to a particular figure during the aftermath of the war. But I'll flesh that stuff out eventually. I actually just needed some help on the Latin. I was thinking of referring to them as "the Violent Gods". Naturally I was interested in what the High Gothic might be. From what I can tell, "Vim Deorum" is my best translation. And I do like the sound. "Violent" also kicks back "saevus", which is closer to "cruel" or "brutal". "Cruel Gods"="Saevus Deorum". Both sound gnarly. Anyone got a line on whether or not these are any good, which ones is preferable, etc.? Thanks in advance for any help. I am certainly not a Latin scholar, but I am guessing someone on this forum might be. -M
Olis
The thing to remember with 40k is that it uses dog-latin. You don't need to be 100% accurate in the translation and rule of cool is also a factor. That said, I did the rounds with a few translators online and got "violenta deos" as one particular translation. If you have a preference, then that one may be the one you want. WarriorFish
I prefer the term "pig latin" - dog latin makes it sounds a lot more structured than it is Shove the words you want into Google translate one at a time and note down the various translations you like the sound of. Then stick them together in whichever way sounds "right" for 40k (i.e. 90% Rule of Cool with no heed to facts). I'm certain that's what GW does anyway
Olis
I prefer the term "pig latin" Entirely off topic but... Pig-Latin is a way of talking that's nothing like Latin, brother (usually done at school, iirc). Dog-Latin, on the other hand, is, well... the correct term for what we're talking about. Not to be pernickety or anything.
