Mithril's - Raptor's 2nd Co Wip/plog.

Well for years i've painted several colours of marines but never truly been happy to make a full force from any of them (ultra's was the closest)

but recently i was painting some Death Watch and painted up one of my stalkers with the pad in Raptors colours and suddenly it was a keanu Reeves moment "Like Woah Dude!" when i saw how cool the pad looked....i thought what does a marine look like...suffice to say i painted one up and I'm hooked and actually Wanting to paint up a force!.

The History/Fluff of the chapter really grabs me and i like the no nonsense get the job done approach of em and i'm looking forward to really getting into them and having a table full of olive drab.

I will be starting with a standard marine squad and rhino transport and attempt to see if i have any scouts(really shouldn't have sold those storms i used to have sad.png) followed by a couple of FA units standard MM speeder and a bike unit (from my failed to finish Ravenwing army).* i saw on here "The Yak" had done an awesome job on his MM speeder with his 2 never die crew members= inspiration overload !!cool.png

I also have had a Stormraven tee'd up in a black basecoat for about 2 years ready for the colour of whatever army i was going to commit to laugh.png (will be dusting that off soonish).

I have been trolling the forum for info on army comp etc etc but would like feedback on what people have found we're absolute must haves for a "Themed" Raptors force and any advice they could give will be greatly appreciated biggrin.png

In terms of a fluffy raptors force, I would recommend LOADS of scouts with sniper rifles/shotguns. Have you considered doing a Badab war force? Or are you doing a straight, 'generic' 40k army? If you're building a Badab themed army, their chapter master, Lias Issodon, is pretty cool.

The Storm Raven and land speeders would be fluffy as well, so all good there. happy.png

EDIT: Additionally, have you checked the FW Chapter Rules? These suit the Raptor's fluff, obviously, and seem interesting (first-turn shrouded for all non-vehicle models + their bolters and bolt pistols can have the alternate profile of Heavy 1, Rending, for no additional cost)...

Having had a Raptors focus before my break (and seeing nothing changed for them), I would like to provide my thoughts. As a direct descendant from the Raven Guard, being 2nd Founding, there is serious influence in combat style. Yet, over the millennia, clearly there has been divergence. The Raptors tend to use stealth at a distance. "Get shooty" basically.

Keep in mind they are still a Codex Chapter so everything in the arsenal is at your fingertips.

Thanks heaps for the Feedback guys thumbsup.gif and the enthusiasm to watch what unfolds...ermm.gif ..tongue.png .

Here is my test model, now hes not finished but i wanted to show him to see what Raven/Raptor fraters think?

Colours I've used are -

Deathworld forest (Base),

Agrax wash(Recess lining)

Zandri dust (highlight),

i want to keep it simple as i have found over complicated paint schemes get mucked up/Forgotten or end up causing burn out due to boredom of repetition ohmy.png

using the yellow stripe as a nod to being 2nd Co but also to just break up the green (on models we need some catchy contrast*,even if they are supposed to be all camo'd up!

pouches are a Calthan brown/Khorne red mix and grenades will be a dark red* (see contrasting spot colour reason) just for visual pop.

Weapons will be boltgun and black.... i Ordered some left MkIII raptor pads from shapeways so thats whats missing on him by the way.

can't think of any other colour choice things so here's the test pic -

C&C welcome!

need to decide basing too rolleyes.gif was thinking of using the new texture paints in a mix , say Astrogranite and Agrellan combo...like this from "Thunder God"DW blog maybe -

It's beautiful wub.png

I am a huge fan of the yellow stripe. In fact I think the model could use a touch more of that contrasting yellow. Maybe Shoulder/Knee/Markings or something of the sort. Picking a contrasting color that is in the same family on the color wheel was a good move because it gives pop but doesn't feel like it breaks the concept of stealth/camo too much. Great choice! smile.png

The use of other colors for the Raptors is kind of important.  The only source we have for their organization is from FW Badab series.  Although they are a Codex Chapter, they diverge from typical Company designation.

So, mithrilforge, I'm curious about your plan to show Sgt, Veteran, Vet Sgt or even HQ designation within the 2nd Company.  I'm presuming the example above would be for a "regular' dude?

Nice work mithrilforge, this will be a thread to follow for sure.

Race, don't forget the Taros Campaing. The Raptors were one of the two Space Marines Chapters that go involved alongside the Elysian, Cadian and Tallarn Regiment. They played a relatively small part in the conflict, but there's still some cool infos about them in that book.

Astrogranite can make some nice mars rough dirt. Left lather in on with a uniform surface. Carroburg crimson wash. Dry brush with scarlet. Done. I added a second dry brush with VMA silver to give it a reddish metallic look. I wanted a metallic tomb world look... like a planet that suffered a nuclear holocaust leaving behind a reddish metal layer of dust/soot everywhere.

Is that a FW model? The helmet looks sinister.

@ Race - i'm going all codex with the Sgt's/Vet Sgt's,got a hankering to see how red helms stand out on these guys.

yeah this guy is a "Standard" trooper so all of those will have the yellow 2nd Co stripe, I'm thinking the rest...

Troops.gif - Yellow

Elite.gif - White

FA.gif - Orange

HS.gif - Black or Grey?

HQ.gif - Gold....??

@ Itvyper - yeah i may do a yellow knee pad to show everyone's from 2nd Co (perhaps i'll test it out on Marine 0 first )

@Sang Guard - he's a Betrayal at Calth Marine from the boxset, i love the look so i chose to do my first squad in Mk4.

@ everyone else- thanks for the compliments and feedback.

Caught up at my mates on Friday night and we made out starter army lists (were sorta doing a tale of 2 gamers to get ourselves to finish a 40k army each) he's doing ultra's and already has 245pts done already so i need to catch up !!

we made lists from what we had so although they may not be legal/optimum it's going to be enough to motivate us to finish what we have at hand....hence my list

500pts army list Raptors

ooh grey wub.png that will work too Hmmm

im also thinking of skipping pure white and switching to bone white e.g. screaming skull equivalent, test model heads will need to be presented for a vote i think biggrin.png

expect some painted helmets in the next few days for a comparison vote !!

I've always thought of the Raptors as being one of the chapters that wears colours as close as marines get to 'proper' camouflage, so I vote yes for bone rather than pure white, and I'd suggest charcoal rather than any black, as neither black nor white appear in nature (aside from white snow ;) ).

Quick update working on the squad but just snapped a quick shot of the WiP Sgt, gave him a head that looks kinda combat like with comm's etc and the rebreather setup they're know for sometimes??...

went with yellow on both knee's as i may do specialists/Heavy wpn with one yellow knee unsure.png and also his backpack top is yellow (gaming wise, not fluff wise) for me to see on the table where my Sgt's are located for squad coherency and tactical placement for charging/receiving charges...it's kinda like a banner tongue.png or bananer if you will.

@ kierdale- bone and charcoal/grey have been duly noted msn-wink.gif

Are you going to edge highlight the armour or keep it really muted/camolike?

The sergeant needs a club. Not a mace but a club with a nail in it.

Will be edge highlighting with zandri dust ...the first test mini has it teehee.gif up there at the top... its very subtle but shows up much better in real life.

a nailed club?...does he look brutish eh? he's getting either a power wpn or a Lightning Claw (Raptors Talon devil.gif ) depends if i can find my calth boxset from the back room...

I dug out an old squad of Scouts i was putting together for my Dark Angels from way back when!? ... I wanted them to look all Seal Team stealthy like with close quarters shotguns

and Night vision as though they were a deep insertion assassination team to take out key targets in the enemies rear lines ph34r.png

it was a totally fluffy fun squad at the time,but...are shotguns any good nowadays ?... will this squad be useful at all ??

The way I see it is that if you have black armour you want to keep things quiet so you use blades or claws. Slicing and stabbing is less noisy than blunt force. If you have red armour you kind of dont give a heretic's ass so you just take the most bloody weapon you can find such as a power axe or eviscerator. If you have muted green you are more or less a closet ork. Since orks don't do subtle and have a strange understanding of technology, I figure you would want a club or if you can fathom it, a power mace. All jest aside, those scouts really need some yellow shotguns.

I think shotguns are probably better than BP+CCW considering it's 1 S4 BP shot+3 CCW attacks vs. 2 S4 shotgun shots+2 CCW attacks on the charge. Plus you can use them to Overwatch and fire from an LSS too even if it moves 12".

Well that is a welcome response then biggrin.png , Landspeeder storm is on the horizon then too (it really is a shame i sold 2 of them off a while back dry.png).

Q- Can i bulk this squad up to 10 with the other half with sniper rifles and then combat squad them?...leave the snipers in the flank or rear and deploy the shotguns in the LSS?

i decided to drop the Stormraven back down the paint list as it would've been a cheesy 500pts to play against my mates army first up...adding scout squad in LSS and a Whirlwind....

looks like i will have to Kit Bash a LSS from the many speeders i have already..Google search here i come laugh.png might have to armour up the front and call it a "Storm tempest"

Cheers Mithril
