Alrighty then, I've decided to submit a related Chapter from my unfinished Red Sentinels - the Silver Sons. While the Red Sentinels have a character that's pretty much a 40k-ified pastiche of Fury Road (and is obviously so), I believe the Sons to be somewhat more... normal (ish). Also, might I say, this is quite possibly the most boring colour scheme I can recall ever making. Lots of silver and not a lot of anything else. Hrm. Well done brain. Well done. Just, uh, imagine extra 'flavour' and detail that the painter (and my lacklustre photoshop skills) can't provide. :unsure.:

Heraldry of the Silver Sons
gallery_60566_6038_8015.png
The Silver Sons, the rising star among astartes chapters, were born from Red Sentinel gene-seed during the fourteenth founding. The honour of siring a chapter, let alone two, was not lost on the Sentinels. For the Silver Sons to rise in prestige as fast as they did made the Sentinels proud. But the galaxy does not care for pride or prestige.

Operating in the Segmentum Solar and based on the feudal world of Argyr Chloris, the Silver Sons met with success in prosecuting traitor forces during the Black Crusades of the previous millennium. It was during the Wrath of the Chaos Sun that things began to unravel. The Silver Sons, for their part, performed admirably and prosecuted the campaign honourably and without incident, fighting alongside such august institutions like the Legio Titanica and the Grey Knights. For ten years they performed their duty, neither asking for glory or seeking higher standing among their peers. Unknown to the Chapter and unknown their allies, something had wormed it's way in, persisting even after they were mind wiped for their extensive operations alongside Ordo Malleus agents.

This cancer in the Chapter took it's time to manifest, decades after the initial infection. How this corruption was missed by the librarians of the Chapter, it is not known but one theory points to the Librarius of the Silver Sons being the first victim of malignant powers. The manifestation triggered a full lock down on Argyr Chloris, catching the majority of the Chapter inside the Emerald Keep, and prompted a purge for those brothers still uncorrupted. As the Silver Sons tore themselves apart from within, the remaining forces not in lock-down were ordered to seek aid from their parent Chapter. Unfortunately for the Sons, traitors hid amongst those ordered to get help and loosed a brace of cyclonic torpedoes on their homeworld.

With Argyr consumed, all but dead and dust, those Silver Sons that remained were stunned. With the Emerald Keep on lock-down, they had hoped that at least some of those inside had been spared the plasma firestorm. As they began to hunt for the traitors in their midst, they called to the Keep, hoping against hope that someone would answer back. Even as those suspected of treachery were executed, no response came. What more could they do? A course was set for Waste and the dead were mourned.

The distress calls made by the Silver Sons in their final hours had not gone unnoticed. Assuming control of an investigative force, one Mal Vergen - Ordo Herecticus Inquisitor - began to pick over the bones of Argyr Chloris and the Emerald Keep. The corruption was not hard to root out from those bodies that had been spared the initial plasma overwash, while cogitators and fragmentary records allowed him to piece together who was left and where they were going. Four months into the investigation, Inquisitor Vergen chartered a course for Waste, following in the wake of the last of the Silver Sons.

Between the Segmentum Solar and the Southern Rim, the warp was tumultuous. Eddies and squalls delayed both the Sons and Vergen, both arriving many months after the Red Sentinels had first received word of the destruction of Argyr Chloris and the trouble that the Silver Sons had become mired in. With no contact, a company was sent to the Emerald Keep to ascertain what had happened. As the Silver Sons approached Waste, they were commanded to hold fast and come no closer. The Silver Sons wanted aid, not a stand off. The Red Sentinels, marshalling their forces, wanted an explanation for the events on Argyr. When Inquisitor Vergen arrived and declared the Silver Sons traitoris perdita, the Sons' pleas were silenced.

Seeing that there was no respite to be given, the Sons attempted to flee. They knew that the Inquisition were likely to disband the Chapter. They could not allow that, after all those hundreds of years of duty and sacrifice. Their Chapter had done much for the Imperium and they sincerely wished to survive to do more. To Vergen and the Sentinels, it was seen as confirmation of their guilt. With a heavy heart, the Sentinels opened fire. Along with Vergen's own flotilla, they lay waste to the last of the Silver Sons, forever destroying the Chapter and it's legacy.

But the events do not stop there. The Red Sentinels were the ones that the Silver Sons had reached out to and, with what Vergen knew, had become suspect themselves. The Sentinels would be subject to years of scrutiny and testing, many of their brothers being psychically tested as well as physically. Even Waste itself was investigated, it's nascent psykers taken away and many of the most powerful warlords spirited off-planet or otherwise silenced. Vergen himself had threatened to destroy the Red Sentinels should they be contaminated or found wanting. In his eyes, they were indeed found wanting. To him the Black Rage and the Red Thirst were manifestations of gene-seed defects, ill educated as he was of Blood Angel genetics. The Master of the Red Sentinels, however, convinced him of a righteous path, a final test. They were to embark on a penitent crusade, not allowed to recruit or communicate with other Imperial forces for one century until they had completed their journey. Should they survive such a task, they would be free to return to Waste and resume their duties to the Golden Throne. Should they fail or fall short, they were to be hunted and eliminated.

To this day, the Chapter bitterly remembers the penitent crusade much akin to a walk of shame. Vergen himself, while remembered in good stead in other circles, was vilified by the Sentinels. He was the prime example of why the Inquisition could not be trusted.

Like the Silver Skulls or something and they always looked awesome to me in the old 3rd Rulebook. Plus with them being grey I won't even need to do much colour work :laugh.:

CHAPTER BADGE:

gallery_66537_10027_35860.jpg

ORIGIN OF THE CHAPTER:
The Angels Sorrowful are a chapter shrouded in mystery. Their founding is unknown, even to members of the chapter, although these will never speak to any outsider about the history or inner workings of their chapter in any event. However, many have noted their similarities to the Lamenters Chapter of Space Marines and rumours abound about what connexion -- if any -- the Angels Sorrowful may have to that ill-fated Cursed Founding chapter.

Although there are some fragments of records suggesting activities of the Angels Sorrowful as early as M38, these are inconclusive and incomplete. If accurate, they suggest that the Chapter has operated in the outer fringes of Imperial Space, toiling away unremarked by the vast majority of humanity. It was not until the last century of the 41st Millennium that they began to appear on active service. Combining this with the black-and-white chequy pattern incorporated into their chapter badge, many have speculated that they are in fact successors of the Lamenters. Others opine that the Angels Sorrowful are actual Lamenters who split with the parent chapter when it threw in its lot with Lugft Huron. Postulators of both positions will point to the melancholia which surrounds the Angels Sorrowful, and those who favour the latter note that the captain of the Lamenters' First Company at the time it was first assigned to the Maelstrom Warders was allegedly named Nicodemus. The current Chapter Master of the Angels Sorrowful is Nicodemus Doloroso, and as with most things with the chapter little is known of his past, although it is widely known that he rivals Commander Dante for his antiquity. Those in favour of the belief that the Angels Sorrowful are Lamenters in disguise, also point to the presence of a Tyranid from Hive Fleet Kraken being crushed under the feet of an Angel Sorrowful on the Chapter banner.

CHAPTER HOME WORLD/FLEET:
The Angels Sorrowful are a fleet-based Chapter centred around their battle barge Mater Dolorosa.

PRESENT ACTIVITIES:
Most recently the Angels Sorrowful were operating in the galactic north of the Halo Stars, but at present are deployed en masse in the defence of Baal against Hive Fleet Leviathan.

COMBAT DOCTRINE:
Although generally codex-compliant with an “all around” approach to combat operations, the Angels Sorrowful exhibit a definite preference for aerial assaults and close combat. Despite being constantly understrength, with only thee companies currently at full-strength, the Angels Sorrowful always maintain a full complement of jump troops. Although they exude a palpable sadness and even grief, in battle this quickly transitions to rage. More so than other Blood Angels successors they seek always to get to grips with the enemy as quickly as possible and revel in the carnage of close combat. Nicodemus Doloroso especially, though apparently in deep depression to those who encounter outside of battle, turns into a whirlwind of rage on the battlefield.

CHAPTER ORGANIZATION:
In theory, the Angels Sorrowful are a codex-compliant chapter, albeit with the Blood Angel successor unique units including a Sanguinary Priesthood, Sanguinary Guard, and Death Company. They also include an Inner Circle including the Chapter Master, chaplains, sanguinary priests, and company commanders. Only these know the truth of the Angels Sorrowful's history, and they jealously guard this secrecy.

Being fleet-based and decimated by the Black Rage does require some flexibility in this regard, with isolated fleet elements being forced to adapt their tactics to the resources available to them.

Nominally they have the standard 10 companies, however, only the first, second, and eighth (assault) companies are at full strength. The remaining companies are at varying strengths. The sixth and seventh (tactical reserve) companies exist only on paper. The officers of the Chapter have suffered losses as heavy as any others and the shortage of veteran commanders is manifested by the fact that Chapter Master Nicodemus Doloroso also commands the First Company directly, and the Second Company was commanded for a century by Captain Cassius after he had been interred in a Dreadnought Sarcophagus (with First Tactical Squad Sergeant Tarcisius acting as commander while Cassius slumbered), until he fell the Black Rage.

FLEET ASSETS:
1 Battle Barges - Mater Dolorosa
4 Strike Cruisers
10 Rapid Strike vessels
12 Thunderhawk Gunships
1 Thunderhawk Transporter

BELIEFS:
The Angels Sorrowful share the mystical streak of many other Blood Angels and successors, and despite their perpetual melancholia includes a strong belief that things can be changed for the better, despite how hopeless they may appear. They thus they strive for perfection in all aspects of life, seemingly redoubling their efforts the more hopeless these efforts seem and never accepting that they have achieved that perfection. To those few who have dealt with them, the Angels Sorrowful give an impression of great modesty. They constantly strive for ever better results in works or art, martial discipline, and military doctrine. They seem to manifest even more ornamentation and aesthetic improvements to their armour and accoutrements than most Blood Angels chapters. Most Angels Sorrowful squad sergeants are as well-adorned as many other chapters' company captains.

RECRUITMENT:
Recruitment for the Angels Sorrowful is as much a mystery as any other aspect of the chapter. What stories leak out, suggest that as the various ships of the Chapter move about, they will accept the applications of worthy supplicants who approach them. These supplicants come from all walk of life, from young pious boys, to Imperial Guard veterans, to hive gangers. Such men, seeing the Angels Sorrowful in battle, and inspired by their heroism are inspired to seek entry into the Chapter. It is not known whether this is left to chance or if "suggestions" are sown through the populace while the chapter is in theatre. It seems that the first "test" is whether a man has the audacity to approach the solemn, violet-clad angels of death. Secondly, he will be turned away twice and only if he persists and approaches a third time will he be accepted. From there, the supplicants will be put to various trials and those deemed worthy will be interred in sacrophagi for their reception of geneseed very similar to the fashion followed by the Blood Angels. Those not deemed worthy are offered the opportunity to serve as Chapter serfs.

CHAPTER BANNERS OR BATTLE STANDARDS:

The chapter banner depicts a violet-clad Space Marine standing over the fallen body of a Tyranid from Hive Fleet Kraken.

med_gallery_66537_10027_114805.jpg

HONORS, RELICS, DECORATIONS AND AWARDS:

The two most cherished relics of the Chapter are the Axe of Tears and Misericordia inferno pistol, both of which are borne into battle by the Chapter Master.

The Chapter has not received any honours outside the chapter, toiling in obscurity as they have for most of their existence, and widely distrusted because of their perceived links to the Lamenters. Whether this suspicion and lack of appreciation is justified or not, the Angels Sorrowfull accept it with sad resignation. Never is a complaint heard from them, and they simply move on the the next conflict. On occasions where Imperial allies were of a mind to recognize the Angels Sorrowful's efforts, the Chapter suddenly and quietly withdrew as soon as the campaign was over before any recognition could be given.

BATTLE CRY:
None; the Angels Sorrowful advance into battle with an eerie silence and sadness, until they fly into blood-soaked rage which precludes any formal or uniform battle-cry.

GENE-SEED:
Although their precise origin is unknown, the Angels Sorrowful clearly descend from Blood Angels gene-seed. Not only do they they retain all the organizational hallmarks of Sons of Sanguinius, but they most definitely labour under the heavy burden of the Red Thirst and the Black Rage.

In the Angels Sorrowful the Red Thirst manifests itself as a deep melancholia and sadness, with a dark side constantly bubbling under the surface: unknown to all but the highest officers of the Chapter, the Black Rage is overtaking its marines at an alarming rate and this largely accounts for their perpetually depleted numbers. It is a chapter on the brink, but Nicodemus Doloroso accepts this with sad resignation and seeks for an opportunity that his Chapter may meet its final end in a great heroic intervention. As the close of the 41st Millennium draws near, the Angels Sorrowful find themselves therefore constantly on the move at an almost frenetic pace, their purple armour and chequy pauldrons an ever more common sight.

CHAMPIONS OF THE CHAPTER:

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bQkXeZDzGnQ/ULBBsSt3SBI/AAAAAAAAAzQ/rGhWTKewOLw/s1600/Nicodemus+1.jpg
Nicodemus Doloroso - Lord of Tears, Keeper of the Silent Watch, Master of the Angels Sorrowful

In contrast to the rapidity with which the Chapter at large is falling to the Black Rage, Nicodemus Doloroso is a space marine of great antiquity, such that he is the only Chapter Master of the Angels Sorrowful for whom there is any record outside the Chapter (keeping in mind that the only reliable outside records of the Angels Sorrowful are about 500 years old). He presents as a deeply melancholic, brooding, and quiet figure, though once in combat he unleashes his inner rage and his fury unbound is a sight indeed to behold. Not only a tactical genius of centuries of experience, he is a whirlwind of destruction in combat, wielding the hallowed Axe of Tears and Misericordia inferno pistol. Invariably, he is seen where the fighting is fiercest, at the head of the Sanguinary Guard, directing the battle over vox with great skill even while knee-deep in blood.

Cassius the Unredeemed - Death Company Dreadnought

For many decades, Cassius served with distinction as the Captain of the Angels Sorrowful's 2nd Company. Many had him pegged to succeed Nicodemus Doloroso when the time came, and he was the de facto second-in-command of the Angels Sorrowful until he was mortally wounded at the battle of Alba Longa. There he personally led an attack aimed to strike at the Hive Tyrant "commanding" the Tyrannic infestation. Though he destroyed the beast, his body was shattered and he was interred into his dreadnought sarcophagus. His first squad sergeant, Tarcisius, should have assumed command but the latter insisted that Cassius continue in command -- at least on the battlefield -- from within his dreadnought cockpit and Tarcisius undertook only to manage the company between battles while Cassius was in stasis. However, after a century of this arrangement, Captain Cassius succumbed to the Black Rage and now seeks release and honourable death in battle.

Sergeant Tarcisius - Sergeant, 1st Squad, 2nd Company; Acting Company Commander (vice Cassius)

The most senior sergeant of the Angels Sorrowful 2nd Company, and Commander of its first squad, Tarcisius has for over a decade taken care of the administrative tasks of company commander while Captain Cassius slumbered in his dreadnought. Now that Cassius has fallen to the Black Rage, Sgt. Tarcisius acts as battlefield company commander as well, but has not yet been promoted formally to captain owing to the intensity of recent campaigns -- including the Angels Sorrowful's deployment in the defence of Baal -- which has led to the company most frequently being under the direct command of Chapter Master Nicodemus Doloroso who has used this more reliable battle company for the Chapter's most important missions.

Random question: What software / App are people using to design those cool space marine colour scheme images? Oh and all the above is AWESOME!!!

It's the Space Marine Painter program. This thread has links to B&C's painters while this one is what I consider to be the most flexible/useful one to date.

THE REDEEMERS ARE A LOYALIST SPACE MARINE CHAPTER, SUCCESSOR TO THE BLOOD ANGELS CHAPTER.

THERE IS LITTLE TO NOTHING ON RECORD TO DOCUMENT THIS OBSCURE CHAPTER.
