Hello and welcome to my first painting log. The title is a clever play on words, referring to both my newness to the forum and also the fact that I will painting (initially) Dark Angels. Hopefully by posting my progress I can encourage myself to paint more, as I am normally fairly disorganised and inconsistent with finishing projects.

I'll put up some pictures and more info later today, so hopefully someone can C&C what I've done so far.

Thanks for looking!

Right so uni work has eased off for Christmas and I can now dedicate the time to figuring out the mysteries of the B&C image embedding procedure. Hopefully this should work.

These guys are half of my first tactical squad. I have little interest in playing the game as it currently stands, so these lot are for the moment a collection of what I think is cool rather than viable. I have though magnetised the Sergeant's arms, and they are awaiting the release of FW decals before I decide between decals or sculpted right pads.

This is the Sergeant, and I'm well happy with how he turned out. I took inspiration from the cover of False Gods, as it's a pretty cool pose. I also gave him a load of greenstuff attention, hence the lightning bolts all over him. I intend to do this to all my NCOs upwards, and possibly vets as well.

Hopefully this has all worked and I can get to work showing off the rest of what I've done so far. Unfortunately due to disorganisation and a ski trip I realised I couldn't bring by airbrush home, so work on these guys will be halted for December. Ah well.

Thanks

Edit: Having uploaded the images, I've realised I'm crap at photography. I'll see if I can't play around with some of the other images before posting them. Still, at least I figured out how to add images biggrin.png

I'm liking the kneepad being red...I think it's just the ticket! I did my trims in gold because I thought they'd be mistaken for the Xth legion, but I think more red in the color palette is enough to distinguish :)

Come join us in the big 1st legion WIP if you want! Ave Primus!

I just spent 30 mins typing a new post, only for it to disappear. Bit frustrated, but there's nothing to be done except write it all out again. My apologies if the writing's a bit brusque.

Basically I wanted to upload the rest of the images I have before I return to the workbench and get busy on something else. I've been doing dissertation work this holiday, hence why I've been absent so long.

Firstly, a better shot of my Sergeant.

http://i.imgur.com/9IsYD6u.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/wON3HO2.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/NSCnk6W.jpg

These photos illustrate best I feel the theme I'm going for with this army. I came across an argument on a Beasts of War article over the FW upgrade parts, which devolved into "they can't be space indians because they're space knights". God forbid that FW make something unique drawing from multiple influences rather than simple STEREOTYPES IN SPAAAAAAAAAAACCCCCCCEEEEEEE.

My guys therefore draw from a range of influences, mostly tribal and knightly. These pads show my attempts at insignia, which I'm reasonably happy with. Some are knightly, some tribal, some a mix. I will change it slightly in future however as these guys are supposed to be generic Ironwing tacticals, and a full pad of heraldry looks quite ornate, as well as the fact they don't have any designation markings on them. The next batch will probably have half and half heraldry and insignia to get around this. Veterans and Sergeants will perhaps have a full pad.

http://i.imgur.com/3yI2SW8.jpg

And of course what Ironwing army would be complete without Iron armour? I want these guys to look less ornate as the implication of newer armour is newer recruit. Thus the Sergeant only has the lightening pattern, and the rest of the line legionnaires will have very little "extra" on them. I did however go a bit magnet crazy on these guys: one of them can swap a bolter for a heavy bolter to turn them into Vets, while the sergeant is fully magentised weapon wise: including his helmet.....

http://i.imgur.com/y8yrlbd.jpg

I wasn't joking.

Next on my list is more infantry. I need various upgrade bits to make the rest of the guys a bit better looking, and I need to start thinking about transports. Once I've made all the line infantry (5 or 6 squads of ten) I'll start on vets, terminators and tanks. Somewhere in there I have to fit in my Dreadwing detachment and HQs (I'm tempted to make 1 each of all possible Centurions, just for the hell of it). I also have yet to share the background for these guys, but I feel that is best introduced along with the characters as I make them.

Thanks for reading

I'm finally back from my Christmas adventures (went skiing for the first time: 5 days of pure awesome bookended by a day either side on a crammed coach, and also made great strides towards my dissertation) and have cracked on with the First Legion. I spent this evening prepping my Mk III tactical squad and a recon squad for priming via airbrush, including mounting them and all that jazz. I now need to make some press molds of the Phobos ammo pouches and they'll be ready.

http://i.imgur.com/iI5v6LI.jpg

Disaster struck however when I tried to prime them: it turns out my airbrush's nozzle has broken, resulting in it spraying primer all over my window sill. I've broken it before, and by replacing it twice I will have forked out 50% of the brush's price. I'm pretty pissed off with myself over this, and I'm considering buying a chinese version which is cheaper than the replacement nozzle. Also an ultrasonic cleaner so I have somewhere to put the damn thing apart from the window sill. The joys of student life means that for me this is a significant amount of money, so I'm gonna sleep on it and decide tomorrow.

I'm now pretty tempted to leave these guys for a week or so until I can get some bits to make up the second squad in Mk III, finish off my 2nd Mk II squad and prime literally everything in one all out blitz. While I wait for everything to arrive, there are some Tau (filthy xenos I know, but they won't be an issue for another 9000 years) I can work on.

I have also made the investment of a daylight desk lamp. My parents loaned me a proper photographer's one back home, and it is incredible. With me spending most of my daylight hours in the library, it can be frustrating to work with the poor light I have in my room, and thus I can justify the purchase. As soon as it arrives I'll get some better pictures of these guys.

Thanks for reading!

Hello all

Managed to get my airbrush working again after a lot a faff, so having handed in my dissertation draft at midday I cracked on with laying down the base layers of the black armour on the MkIII tactical squad.

http://i.imgur.com/DWwONlE.jpg

Here's a few of the guys. The black armour is still incomplete, but I thought I'd give a run down of the recipe anyway. The marines are primed with a dark grey (this is a influenced by the 'Eavy Metal approach to black, in which they often start with a blue black and glaze down into black in the shadows), and then airbrushed with 2 successive highlights of grey. I use the Warcolours range, which divides its colours into sets of 5: thus the paints I use are labelled "Cool Grey 4" and "Cool Grey 3". It's a useful system for painting, especially for blending & layering, but less so for suggesting alternative brands. Having painted the metal (not in the picture but done in real life) I give the whole model a wash of black, which finally turns the armour "black". If I wanted to do it really quick I'd dip them, but I prefer taking my time ensuring that the wash doesn't pool where I don't want it. It gives the black some depth which I find lacking in edge highlighting. I might try a satin varnish and black oil wash, but I'm pretty sure it'll be more work for a similar effect.

http://i.imgur.com/nmYi1E6.jpgThese two guys show the transition: at least they should, but I'm afraid my crappy camera work might have blurred it entirely. I know certainly the daylight lamp was too strong, please forgive me. I guess my next desk improvement project will be some sort of photo set up.

These guys are my recon troopers. I decided it would be quite cool to do them up in desert camouflage, so I pulled out some old desert DPM (military fancy dress cupboards are full of desert stuff now) and colour matched some paints. I used the airbrush to first lay down the Vallejo Sand Yellow, and then did some stripes of Vallejo Armour Brown on them. I then painted the webbing and other bits in green or grey, the flesh and the metallics. These guys will get an oil wash of umber/dark brown, and a bit of weathering using powders, and they should be good to go. They are a bit of a test-run for the camouflage patterns I want to employ on my Ravenwing Predators, which will be done up along a similar theme of Long Rang Desert Group style. I was thinking it would be quite cool to spin out a small LRDG army to accompany my normal Ironwing, so as a reward for finishing the infantry I might order a Deimos predator to do up with camo nets and long range aerials to start a recce troop.

Just a close up of the camo pattern.

Next up should be the tactical squad approaching completion. After that, probably more tactical squads. I might also start on the rhino that arrived the other day.

Hello all

Quick update as I move towards completing the Mk III squad. 8/10 have been finished up and weathered, one I forgot to varnish and so remains in a pre-weathered state, and the Sergeant I just could not be bothered with sorting out.

http://i.imgur.com/hUB2UYp.jpg

The one pre-varnished marine: here you can see the washed black armour and the details. I'm pretty happy with the weapons, they're the one use of edge highlighting on the model.

The whole group post-weathering. I added a vexillia to one of the guys using the 40k Dark Angels bits, which I feel add a bit of uniqueness to the unit without going overboard. Personally I prefer to have only a little ornamentation as it fits my version of Great Crusade veterans better, without the whole robes'n'chains of 40k Angels, which I'm reserving for special units.

Close up of the weathering. I sponged some brown on before the varnish, and after applying some gloss varnish, I applied an oil wash. I used a mix of brown, dark red and ochre for the first layer, then added that mix to a lot of pale yellow to give it a sandy feel. It dried very dusty, but I'm afraid the matte varnish layer will disrupt this.

Should be able to crack on with the recce troops soon. I might also introduce a little side project that has recently arrived.

That's all for now, cheers for reading!

Hi all

Once again it's been a long time since updates. I've been working through a couple of projects, but I finally came back to the tactical squad when I found their chainswords in a baggy in the depths of my desk. I'm nearly done with these guys, they just need a varnish for the weathering powders, and I'm still missing decals to do their shoulder pads.

Without any further ado, Tactical Squad Rapahel:

The Sergeant still isn't finished because I'm an idiot who apparently enjoys making life difficult for himself. Thought I'd give a close-up as I'm quite happy with how the weathering turned out: initially I was unsure of the oil wash but it has provided great depth for the powders. I also enjoyed the basing a lot. I'm going for a desert-industrial theme, inspired by the battle in Descent of Angels, so I went a bit wild with jewelers chain, plasticard I beams and guitar strings. I'm pretty happy with the result.

I firstly added a load of debris (jeweller's chain, plasticard, guitar strings and a press mould made from an Anvil Industry rubble sprue), then applied

Vallejo brown earth texture paint. Primed the debris black by brush, and drybrushed Army Painter Desert Yellow followed by Vallejo Model Colour Iraqi Sand onto the brown. Drybrushed the debris silver, washes it black and added some weathering with powders. Does that sound secretive enough?
