scratchbuilding/converting a Legion Medusa

heyo, i'd like to add a squadron of medusas to my iron warriors in 30k, but isn't to keen on paying 150+ pounds for the forgeworld variant.

i've a couple of ideas how i could go about this:

-stock gw basilisks with their barrels cut off halfway, or replaced with a bigger cannon(suggestions) or plastic tubing(PVC?) (easy-peasy, cheap, might look a bit weird)

-gw manticores (i like the aesthetics of rocket artillery, and with melta-suiciders it might never be a trouble that they wysiwyg only should be able to shoot 4 times each, i have plans to save the leftover deathstrike rockets to put a rack of 'em on a baneblade at some point in the future!)

-a wyvern with  the big gun from the hunter/stalker. (expensive, unless i can scrounge up some parts from ebay, or convert from othe chimera chassis)

-a chimera chassis with the maxmini siege gun. (expensive, looks pretty good, doesn't look to be much room for any crew, based on google images, though)

what do you think?

Looking at the GW Basilisk the rear of the gun seems pretty large compared to the front. Someone with the proper models should have to measure this, but replacing the gun with a shorter but larger diameter shouldn't bee that hard as long as you find the proper pipes. Evergreen makes pretty nice ones that slide into each other, but I'm not sure if the biggest one is enough, but a cut up white-board marker or something would probably work just as well. Just make sure it's made of a plastic that can be easily glued...

i found a guide to use leman russ demolisher cannons as a muzzle, that plus a vanquisher barrel might work good without looking too much like a copy-pasted battle cannon.

gonna have to investigate further if i could use marker pencils, i like that idea.

Can you share a link to the guide please? I'm interested in some phosphex launchers myself, and I love kit-bashing, so I'd love to take a look :)

Also loving the hunter conversion there, and that's giving me other ideas.

Anyone know what size the stalker cannons are, and how they compare with Ad-Mech Kataphrons? I'm thinking of some quad launcher fun :D:D

I gotchu fam.

They will need another barrel to make it a "quad" so possibly need to use different barrels or acquire more stalker barrels. Wouldn't be too much to convert but you should know that the gun housing is triangular shaped so it may need to be cut back to allow for a squared housing for 4 barrels. However, if you cut the housing back, it should work great as a base for gravitron and laser destroyers.

Personally I'm also thinking of using them for kataphron based rapiers lol.

For Medusas, I'm planning to use a 1/35th scale Sturmpanzer IV 'Brummbar', because the Medusa cannon is a huge gun and needs a big vehicle to realistically house it along with crew, ammo, engine etc:

With the FW Medusa cannon and lots of 40K vehicle detail parts like cupolas, exhausts, a heavy bolter housing at the front; the idea is, it'll look like a definite 40K vehicle (rather than just a straight WW2 tank with a Nurgle symbol painted on it) but not like any Imperial-pattern one. Chaos would have plenty of forge worlds of its own, so it seems sensible to me to establish this model-wise.

Cool idea, though you might end up spending just as much money to buy a FW medusa gun and a 1/35th scale model as you would just buying a legion medusa.

You can, with careful hunting, pick up the Tamiya ones on Ebay for about £12; I picked up a couple of the FW Medusa cannons while I worked at Games Sweatshop, so got them slightly discounted; you could also use something like the MaxMini Siege Gun or the Kromlech one. Either way, it still works out cheaper than paying FW's extortionate prices.

BTW, the 1/35 Brummbar is also a perfect fit proportion-wise for the Basilisk cannon...

Well that certainly helps to already have the guns. I kind of went for a Stryker MGS kind of look or the NLOS-C. So auto-loader type, self propelled artillery. I imagine my variant has less crew and often direct fires similar to an assault gun.

Took a shot at doing a quad mortar conversion.

Sooooo...... that's pretty much identical with how I'm building mine laugh.png

Though I'm going for a plug n play system to switch between weapon variants.

Do you have any more pics of the back (to see how you mounted the Icarus array) and the front shielding etc? is that just straight plasticard on a spacer?

would love to see the gunners vox pack too if you don't mind?
