'Ardcoat is too 'Ard?

Recommended Posts

Hi. I'm just finishing a squad of models and I have just applied some waterslide decals. Now is a sensible time to apply some varnish to the area. I noticed when prepping for the decals that my pot of 'Ardcoat has thickened slightly and I used a bit of water to thin it but still looked uneven when wet.

What would you suggest for thinning down gloss varnish like 'Ardcoat? I'm concerned that the varnish won't mix that well with water and that I should try Lahmian medium instead? I need to smooth the consistency while reducing the glossy properties as little as possible.

I am guessing I should just add more water than I did since washing my brushes with water is sufficient to get the varnish out of the bristles?

I'm not an expert, yet I used Lahmian Medium to thin 'Ardcoat. Since I wanted a very thin coat it was almost 1:1 in a separate pot. Admittedly, I also went the lazy man's path and bought Vallejo Brand gloss varnish because it was naturally thinner than 'Ardcoat.
