But all fluff shows just how hard pressed the Imperium is to supply most worlds and regiments with materiel?

Also, what do you mean by the imperium is not waging that many large scale wars? Tyranids, necrons and tau are popping up all over the place, and mankind is still under the eternal threat of the orks and the eldar (mixed varieties). The imperium is losing a fighting battle trying to stave those off, without even speaking about chaos... so I'd like to see what you mean by "large scale wars" - are these too small for you?

@bryanblaire: should this discussion also be moved to its own thread?

It hit me earlier tonight: even a galaxy spanning Empire isn't going to be able to easily shrug off the massive loss of trained soldiers such as just happened on Cadia. 847.5 million trained and experienced troops gone. I wouldn't want to be the Imperium's G1 (Personnel Officer) right now. msn-wink.gif Sure they should be able to draft that many, but they won't have the combat experience of those they are replacing.

If GW runs with this then they can have a lot of fun embroiling a resurgence of war on all the frontiers of the Imperium as the Xenos seek to take advantage of the situation, as well as various risings and revolts internally. This can generate side campaigns and feature both major Space Marine Chapters and, hopefully, minor chapters that are official but have never been featured in fiction. Also the major orders of the Sisters, especially those like the Sacred Rose which don't get air time, and of course all the other branches o the Imperial forces. We may be in for one heckuva ride, if they take this ball and run with it for all its worth.

If it's anything like Armageddon, they just lost a bunch of crack Kasrkin battalions, space marine companies, war machines, not to mention all the well trained Cadians who are the golden standard of basic guardsmen.

Quoting from this; https://1d4chan.org/.../Imperial_Guard

"A bit of maths, if you will. There are 32,380 Hive Worlds in the Imperium. The average population of these worlds is around 200 billion each. We put these together and we get 6.476E15 (6,476,000,000,000,000 or 6.476 Quadrillion) people on Hive worlds ALONE. Eventually there would be more human BLEEP-babies that there would be soylens viridiens and lasguns to come out of the Forge World assembly lines."

I think the bigger problem for the Imperium is the ammunition and equipment lost than the people (even if they are high-quality). If you look at how much the Imperium is willing to sacrifice at Medusa V and Vraks, it seems to me it aint drafting that's the problem, its giving em guns and bullets.

Similar to the problem the Russians had a Stalingrad against the Germans lol .... 1 rifle per 2 people and the one without the rifle had a box of ammo lol

Not all of fluff. And it is silly when they do, which I what I argue. People don't understand scale very well.

Also, what do you mean by the imperium is not waging that many large scale wars?

Exactly what I say?

Tyranids

Just about the only example that fits the scale.

necrons

The biggest and most powerful Necron Empire has seventy worlds.

tau

Twenty major worlds total. Don't make me laugh. On a galactic scale of the Imperium and its million worlds at lowest estimate, it's like saying that Monaco declaring war on entire NATO would be a major conflict.

orks

I've literally just read Helsreach. The biggest Ork Waagh since the Beast warrants deployment of just millions of troops.

eldar

Don't do much.

are these too small for you?

Yes. Major war in the Imperium should involve billions of troops and tens of thousands of Astartes. At minimum.

I am no expert on Stalingrad, but I have never seen a historical fact for this, but have read a lot that debunked the whole 1 rifle/2 men.

Shortage of ammunition, in some areas, possibly.

War for Armageddon for starters.

And never trust an authors sense of scale or knowledge of background. Didn't the tau just recently conquer a hive world with a couple of thousand guys and about a dozen large-ish suits?

Tens of thousands of Astartes? I get the feeling that there hasn't been a war like that since the Emperor fell!

Hello

I've heard that the Imperium is constantly fighting thousands - if not tens or hundreds of thousands - of actions constantly, using technology that is inferior to nearly all of its enemies, and, most critically, with a logistical system that often sees the materiel arrive years late, if at all.

Perhaps that might have something to do with it?

I don't think anyone familiar with GW scaling considers it to be remotely accurate. Ive seen maybe five or six posters in years say Brotherhood of the Snake or Studio numbers are appropriate and those posters tend to enjoy the super hero narrative. It's a dead horse, well beaten.

Can we take the discussion on the wider Imperium at war and number crunching elsewhere please? At this stage this topic would be best reserved for the new bits we may be learning on the lead up to release. Thanks.

Do we have a street date for the campaign book? I'm really looking forward to trying out that Castellan formation that was leaked.

I picked up the Triumverate of the Imperium and the models look wonderful, even still on the sprues!  On the back of the box proper (under the box sleeve) is some very intricate Mechanicus art that really makes me think Steampunk smile.png All rules for them are indeed inside.

Model wise - from what has been said by those with them in hand the sisters appear to have kept roughly the same scale as the original line, rather than being matched to the unusually tall limited edition canoness.

I'm looking forward if, in the months ahead, maybe at Q3-Q4, there will be a full Sister of Battle and Inquisition, alongside a smaller Mechanicum release.

Given the GW modus operanti in the recent times, it is likely to believe that the Triumvirate models will end up as stand alone model for their respective range.

Belisarius Cawl => Cult Mechanicus Archmagos

Greyfax =>  Inquisition Ordo Herecticus Inquisitor

Celestine => Adepta Sororitas

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Plus given the Traitor Legion supplement, i expect a reforged Mechanicum faction (Cult Mechanicus + Skitarii) within a single big book that would come in a release alongside Belisarius Cawl stand alone release.

As for the Inquisition, i thing that logically, given the Imperial Agent supplement, plus Greyfax miniature, we should have a small release, a new Inquisitor Warband with Greyfax stand alone.

Finally, with Celestine is the obvious fact that all the Sisters of Battle range will experiment a rebirth ala Dark Eldars, and that the Geminae are a sample of the future Seraphim.

"Never compromise. Not even in the face of Armageddon. That is the difference between I and you."

Part 4 - The end

<snip!>

The Harlequin Shadowseer that Cawl had prior dealings with is there too.  "What is this?" asks Cawl.  "Into the light of a new dawn," the Shadowseer answers.  Up ahead Cawl can see Celestine hovering above the opening of a Webway Portal, guiding the Imperials through.  "The ending has passed.", says the Harlequin, "It is time for a new beginning.  There is a parley to be struck, if you have the courage."

<another snip!>

[emphasis mine]

Doesn't that very quote direct from FoC put an end to this "End Times" nonsense? I'm not saying things won't change -- they will, that's the nature of any long-running plotline/story/setting -- but really, can't we take it straight from GW itself?

Chaos players complaining about goodies in the vanilla codex is hilarious to watch. It's like Bill Gates complaining that the blue-collar worker down the street won 500 dollars in the lottery.

"I am not alone," said Celestine. "And your hour is done."

I have to say, thinking about my Nightblades making a hurried and desperate fighting retreat as the planet shatters and crumbles around them is pretty awesome in my mind, rushing to a zone where their strike cruiser can fly in and they jump their rhinos right into the bays.

Very Halo. I approve.

It would definitely mess with Adrastus (former Lutheran Dark Angel)
