IX Legion, 112 Company. Heresy era Blood Angels + Dark Eldar

Hi all, incoming wall of text.

The IX have been an omnipresent since I was a small child. I started collecting them in 1996 and have had several iterations of them since. However, there was always had an itch of sorts I’d never managed to scratch in collecting: that of depicting the sons of Sanguinius in their legion form. 20 years on it’s high time to start rectifying that.

Much of this fascination stems from the background in the 2nd  Ed Codex Imperialis, especially the account of the siege by Bill King and the angel’s noble, if doomed defiance of Horus. At that age, practically all the stories I’d been read  (and had stuck) were Greek Myths, Homer and CS Lewis stories; so the sheer scale of the battles, the tragedy, pathos and courage displayed in the heresy hooked me.

The IXth haven’t had the full forgeworld treatment (or black library for that matter) yet, so sources in planning this force have been scarce. Consequently, I’ve had to plot how I intend to paint/model the force conservatively, with what details I can get out of the existing books, and rely heavily on the community for inspiration. As ever, they’ve delivered. Myles’s (Lillegend/lilloser) plog has been invaluable – http://loserstudio.blogspot.co.uk/2015/07/in-shadow-of-mighty-wings-umbra-alarum.html  with a database of images, a similar background/philosophy in how he views the legion and how he wants to collect/paint/model (though I’m not sure if mine will be siege of terra or instead a company separated, fighting a rearguard towards Terra). Along with some top-notch painting. Monolith’s plog http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/323320-on-the-walls-of-terra-30k-blood-angels-update-081216/page-2  has provided me with my paint scheme and been an otherwise great bank of images to draw from.

Along with visual sources, I like having a written primer on things I want to adhere to, which this post constitutes. It'll be updated as the plog progresses

I do have some of my own thoughts on how I want to approach painting and modelling my legion. In Fear to Tread, the blood angels are shown as being less divided than many of the other legions, without lodges or schisms between Baalites or marines from terra. There was, however, some hints at a class division, reflected visually, between the Sanguinary Guard and other ‘golden boys’ (non-line officers) within the legion, and the ‘regulars’. Even Raldoron, the Chapter Master, wore relatively unadorned red (at least in fear to tread). Consequently, I don’t believe I will be painting any gold at this point, even for my command and elites. Instead, I will be using black, white and limited bronzes, which, though more associated with traitor forces, have looked somewhat striking in my tests and carry a sense of antiquity across. This is quite a change from my very gilded 40k angels (one of my strengths is painting gold – my tip is mixing it with boltgun metal for a light but aged gold, with a good consistency, and washing down) but a welcome one.

While typically the legion have been shown as a shock and awe force of angelic exemplars, I figure this is a force low on resupply, a company  constantly fighting a rearguard toward terra; and so (relatively) necessarily functional, as opposed to my 40k angels who’ve had millennia to work on their armour and weapons. Consequently, I want a relatively 'vanilla' looking force, compared to most others I've seen - saving murals or ornamentation for vehicles or other objects more likely to have endured.

For similar reasons, there will be almost no purity seals (an oath of the moment or two on my praetor, a terran, is the sole one so far) and few cloths, icons or other devotionals –  the emperor is not (yet) worshipped as a god and these are still ‘just’ trans-human soldiers fighting for a secular truth, not warrior-monks/templars. The saltire will not appear anywhere, on any miniature, if I can help it, to further visually distinguish them from their 40k descendants and the two flaws; and I'm hoping to avoid the 40K Blood Angels badge in favour of the flatter one forge world have been using on their pads.

My own background is for the force (in short) is that they represent a company (currently the 112th, unless an official sources takes it from me!). During the crusade they were a dour lot, largely unremarkable besides having a relatively high contingent of terrans, and were used more as a reserve force during the crusade - acting as part of the 'anvil' in campaigns while other companies got on with the typical BAngels MO of shock and awe, especially in instances where the legion's fleets fought independently. It fit with the humours of their company, while they didn't have a remarkable service record, they performed a useful role well when called upon. Leaving Signus, they become separated from the bulk of Legion forces and fight a dogged (doomed?) rearguard to Terra (a BEF parallel?) where despite not having a great impact on the war, they come into their own.

Though I’m following Monolith’s scheme (sons of sanguinius paint guide) I haven’t learnt how to use an airbrush. Consequently, I’ll be undercoating my miniatures white rather than black to try and get as smooth a hand painted red as I can manage – I’m confident in being able to shade well enough to offset that.

Weathering will appear once FW finally produce transfers - would be odd to have battered armour but untouched symbols.

To start with, I have a Praetor, tactical veteran squad (mkIV), contemptor and the contents of prospero burns. I’ll try and stay focused and paint/assemble in batches. This plog will be intermittent, and slow though pic-heavy. I'm hoping for (painting wise) a good gaming standard, my modelling is not very strong however.

Here is a very WIP shot of my Praetor. (Skin near done, everything else at first basecoat - basing not even started)

-(REDACTED)- Master of the 112th,

Sources regarding the master of the 112th company of the IX legion remain scant at best. Whilst his eventual fate is uncertain, his armour (held as a relic of the Angels Encarmine) bears the aquilla bearing breastplate typical of loyalists who fought on the walls of the imperial palace, implying that at least the suit joined the imperial forces at the Siege of Terra.

MKIV  WIP and group. Starting with half a vet squad, a contemptor and the praetor. I find painting/assembling in manageable chunks helps motivation

Nice start, the Praetor's skin's looking great.

Thanks very much, skin is something I'm generally quite proud of (unlike my edge highlights). I use Darren Latham's dark eldar skin guide from an old 'eavy metal masterclass for paler tones, though with some of the lighter colours reduced to avoid chalkiness.

I approve of this thread :smile.:

Also, we'd love to see some of this over in the Blood Angels forum should you have the time :smile.:

Thanks! Will do, hopefully more of a gallery once things start getting completed.

Have done some more painting and started assembling the Prospero plastics. Have completed up to the first red highlight (quite subtle - not sure if it shows up too well in these photos), on the way with the basing. Still need the second/third highlights on the red, black highlights, metallic highlights, basing and incidental details (eye lenses etc). I did say I was slow!

And a few notes for myself from skimming through fear to tread

sanguinary guard seemingly unchanged, b

blade staves, flaying knives

White trim for medicae/apothicary, helix badge, small skull on helmet

chaplains called wardens, black armour, skull masks, crozius

right gauntlets significant - blood oaths more typical as opposed to oaths of moment.

No painting progression - poor conditions for spraying backpacks and pads, not to mention  that work and heavy nights out have made the timeslots I had available altogether unsuitable for painting neat straight lines.

Some modelling underway - have been getting to grips with my first mk3s and first ever drop pod. The mk3s are a bare bones tac squad - some gap filling and extra filling aside, they're ready for painting.  Have also decided against FWs molded pads, will be doing transfers and freehand across the force.

Started on two termies. The squad will have 2x chainfists and combi-meltas, 2x axes and bolters - awaiting some parts for those.

Heresy. Ah well, plenty of forgeworlds in the galaxy... Some noticeable gap filling and filing left.

More done -  all still very WIP

Terminators ready for painting (pads etc to go on later)

Slapped a first layer on some mk3s (and I do mean slapped, haven't used a brush for weeks)

Only sarge will have a bronze faceplate, the vexilla bearer will have a half and half.

Am painting up the pads and backpacks for the mk4s, plan is to get them all (3s, 4s, terminators) at the stage before the final red highlights and do them all at once. Extras like melee weapons, pouches/grenades, lenses etc will go on once the reds are complete.

On my praetor  - aesthetic  advice wanted- a plain backpack

Or an iron halo?

Really need some input, I'm leaning to the plain backpack being that this is meant to be a 'sensible' army but can't decide.

Those are some nice Blood angels. I'll be keeping an eye on this.

For the Praetor I feel like the bare pack gives a better silhouette, the Iron halo adds too much height to the model. What might look better is if you remove the grail from the halo and have just the ring attached to the pack. Otherwise I think you should just leave it bare.

I like the look of your Angels so far. The simple head swap really does make the praetor stand out more. I would also say to go with Checkmate and Foamy's suggestion of putting just the halo part on the backpack.

Looking really nice; that's a lovely shade of red  I'd go with Checkmate's suggestion and stick just the halo to the backpack (it'll still look sufficiently blood angels-sy)!

Thanks all, have followed your advice on that and it does look better painted up and assembled, breaks up the natural flow and silhouette of the miniature less.

Some progress, just to show I haven't quit. I've actually been painting/modelling for an hour or so each evening since the last update, mkIII can take forever if you're not careful. Think it looks brilliant in a Blood Angels scheme, has made the struggle with them worth it. Sort of.

Highlighted the mk4s another step - minus pads and backpacks which are new and pending any highlight. mk3s have had theirs done, but haven't been tidied up yet.

I still haven't painted the last stage (orange corners on reds) highlight on anything yet (or done details - power swords, lenses, vexilla etc.), I want to wait until the core of this batch is at the same level (pre final highlights) and do it then - had bad experiences in the past with sloppy lenses ruining highlights around them - it's easier to fix things before the last highlight goes on. Bitz, grenades, holsters will go on after that.  Not too far off, the terminators have had their first layer of red, I have a converted dreadnought arm and some bitz to go.

The angles on the axe terminators heads may look a little awkward here - the top of their backs (which I'm doing as a sub-assembly) weren't going on before so I had to centralise the poses slightly. With the full carapace on them they look fine.

Basing I haven't really decided on, whatever I do will go on top of what's there already. Tried a snow thing, it looked fine until a miniature went on, but all the red, black, white and green made it a bit festive looking. Any opinions on that in particular are more than welcome (alternative basing ideas, not christmas).

The force is now legal for a tiny game too, which is exciting. Once this batch is finished up, might play a zone mortalis or two to celebrate.

Warden Castor, Master of Sacrifice - originally for the Baalite bake-off

A terran by birth, though a marine very much in the image of his genefather. Attained his rank post union with Baal. A stern line officer, fanatically adherent to the imperial truth, who stood apart - watching rather than commanding hearts; particularly after the verdict at Nicea and the disbandment of the legion's Librarius. Held the role of Master of Sacrifice for the 112th, recording the deeds and times of those within the company and those who fought actions of compliance  alongside them, who willingly gave their lives in hope.

Gained the full esteem of his brothers during the long rearguard action to Terra, eventually falling while repelling a Daemonic incursion traversing the ruinstorm aboard the company’s vessel, Isimud.

The sword hanging from the rear looks a little janky in these images, it's hanging from a sling and looks better connected irl. As (unlike the rest) he'll be undercoated black (minus pads) - will be painting as pretty much a whole assembly - black is more forgiving in terms of coverage errors. There are fluff reasons for the dagger on the front and reliquary within the backpack, both from a former member of the legion's librarius.

He'll be painted as part of the second wave, along with another dreadnought, a predator, a drop pod and another ten tactical marines. Have ordered the third wave of reinforcements from forge world - 4 vehicles. Can't wait to get going with them.

More wip I'm afraid, will eventually find the courage to 'finish' (pending last highlight steps, details, pouches and bits, transfers, then weathering in that order) what's already close.

My local is having a small HH campaign - getting another vet tactical squad will take me to the points minimum, so I'm forging ahead there (not so much a new squad as the other halves of the squads started). 1st basecoats on.

Also got the other arm to the same stage on the mortis contemptor

Also done 'tests' for  the army's basing on the contemptor and the terminators. Terminators are pending base clutter.

The terminators have just had their shading, minus some facial metallics, the sarge's front carapace (which I forgot until seeing the picture) and some studs. Sub-assemblies have gone on. They're a finicky kit but starting to come together well.

So, I had a lot of resin come in the post. 2 x Javelins, a Leviathan and a Sicarian. I'm pretty thrilled with it, especially looking forward to the latter.

I'll be building/painting them in the above order, along with the remaining infantry and dreadnought (16 without paint atm) and finishing what I've started elsewhere. That little lot should likely take me toward the new year, and Angelus.

Here's whats on the desk at the moment. I'm getting a little irritated with myself about not 'finishing' (pending transfers then weathering when the transfers are released). Once this next batch of 5 infantry and first Jav are at the same level as everything else I've already started, I will be finishing things up at last.

The Javelin was a pig. I've already snapped the pointy thing and the top fin is on the wrong way around. Had to do a lot of straightening (and forget about straightening the aforementioned pointy) and it doesn't feel totally stable on the base.

And I've changed my mind, I LOVE IT. What a beautiful model. Just got my first layer of basecoat on (besides the red which has had two layers).

Thanks all,

This is going to be on a hiatus for awhile (August or September?) while I work on xenos filth for 8th. Refreshing to paint to a lower standard, smashing through them quick as. Painting mk3 is a nightmare. Hopefully some more news about Angelus to get me fired up by the time I'm back to it

Edited to remove pics of said xenos filth as per forum rules
