Jam's Guard WIP thread

So finally undercoated my scions and added the base callaban green, I'm going for a scheme that will fit in with my Cadians easily:

I've painted all the faces on my imperial guardsmen with quite a bit of success but at the moment I'm working on my scions.

And got my Taurox put together, still got loads of mouldlines to slice off that I've missed.

Ended up in GW in Bradford and couldn't resist the temptation so got a Knight Warden. That's going to form a big part of my scions army I think!

Will hopefully get some pics of my scions after tomorrows painting but I've painted about as much zandri dust and green as I can manage for one day!

Nice clean painting, mate - and excellent faces, you even got the eyes! It seems that we have similar lists/armies in mind. I'm also forming a Cadian force with the help of scions, just bought myself the MT Start Collecting.... mmm Hellrain Formation.

How did you find the Scion beret heads to fit on a guardsmen? I was thinking of using the 10 berets for a veteran squad.

Keep up the good work! Will be following this thread as well.

Thanks mate, that's the only issue - I try so hard to keep it neat it takes forever haha.

They look fine the only thing is the neck looks a tiny bit long from the back but thats it, It might even just be me to be honest.

For the knight I want him to go with so I might go for some sort of Zandri Dust base, Ushabti Bone over that avoiding the recesses and then have silver for the edges, rivets etc. Either that or go green I can't decide.

Be interested to see what yours is like I do keep having a look at your thread :)

I agree with Flex, The scion heads (both helmeted and with beret) do have a thicker and more pronounced round neck joint in comparison to the standard guardsman, where the heads fit pretty snugly with the torsos. I find that simply glueing a scion head onto a guard torso slightly messes up the proportions of the model, resulting in a overlong neck. Your mileage on the look of that may vary of course.

However, by carefully removing some of the material from the neck joint you can Take care of that, and also at the same time improve the fitting of the different parts, since the scion's ball joint is not designed to mesh well with the guardsman kit. Just work slowly and do regular test fittings while working on the models and you should soon get the hang of it!

@Flex: i'm looking forward to seeing those scions finished! You do some good work on the faces, i wish could paint them that well.

Keep up the good Work!

Thanks chaps. Just base coated my first Taurox in Zandri Dust like my Scions fatigues.

Thoughts on colour scheme?

I'm tempted to do some of the panels green, maybe just the missile launchers area OR nuln oil all the recesses and then a light drybrush of ushabti bone over the rivets and edges etc?

Quick update - finally got around to getting some more painting done after feeling a bit worse for wear from new years!

Ive gone with leadbelcher for the detailed bits on my scion.

The weapons are also leadbelcher-ed and have had a heavy application of nuln oil.

Ive done some other bits like the straps in black and ive also done all of the lenses in the green format as per the tutorial on GW tv on youtube.

I've sprayed and then drybrushed my taurox, after a heavy application of agrax earthshade, first with a dry brush of zandri dust and then ushabti bone.

Quite happy with how things are ticking along but ive still loads to do!

  • 2 weeks later...

Ok so small update! Finally got my hands on the MT codex so had some inspiration for a paint scheme.

Opted for a Cadian guard style base with a Ushabti and Zandri camouflage leaf style pattern:

Still got some bits to do like the burn effect on the Melta and sort out the base but happy with where I am painting wise considering the years of not doing any!

The Scions look great Flex I never thought of trying the Kasrkin camo on a Scion, and you could be close to me too if you found yourself in GW Bradford! Unless that is one of the colonial Bradfords :tongue.:

Thanks!

I went through to the Leeds store today to get the washes I needed to do muzzle burn on the Melta guns:

Practiced on the AM melta troop first before doing 2 of my scions.

Yeah the Bradford store is a bit of a dive in comparison to most stores unfortunately but there's no store in Keighley :/

I'm trying to find local clubs in our area the only problem is that I teach every evening and also on Saturdays.

As I'm self employed I can't close my dojo to satisfy my need to crush the enemies of the Emperor :(

Looks better with the muzzle burn and yeah the Leeds store is pretty good especially since they extended the back to stick another table in. I will re-learn the game and play it one day...

Only another 15 to go..

Hoping to get a game of Kill Team in this weekend with them and my squad of guardsmen so will see how that goes!

I did the bases with Armageddon Dunes texture paint, then drybrushed very lightly with Tyrant Skull to finish, before going back around the base with Zandri dust.

Well done mate! Nicely painted.

How did you get the muzzle burn effects on your meltaguns? Sepia Wash... Some sot of black wash, the drybrush some sort of silver at the tip?

Cheers,

Thanks,I really appreciate that!

It was a heavy wash at the end with Drakenhof Nightshade, then a thickish line of Druchii Violet.

Once thats dry then the same idea but further down the barrel with Seraphim Sepia.

Its really easy and looks great!

Back on with base painting my scions today.

Does anyone have any tips on the best brush to use for this?

I always use a primer spray of Zandri Dust and then start with my Castellen Green.

My last batch (pics above) I was extremely neat and used a 00 or even 000 Winsor and Newton brush to do everything.

It was time consuming but I hardly had to go over anything twice.

Now im experimenting with a higher speed of painting but am I daft in saying that it's going to take just aslong as I'll have to go back over any messy bits?

TL;DR - Best brush for fast base coating? Should I be super neat?
