"At his best, man is the noblest of animals;
separated from order and justice he is the worst."

- The philosopher Aristotle

"Be darkness, that other might bask in the light. Be monstrous, that others might be serene. Be merciless, that the merciful can live in your shadows. Take this burden upon you, and though your deeds shall be most fearsome, the debt I owe you shall be boundless indeed. For you are my most terrible of instruments, my blessed warriors of the Eighth."

Silky Night Lord.

The only thing I'd suggest is getting the FW Legion specific upgrades as the Night Lords are quite unique in their look and trophies, bur great painting all round :-D

First off, sorry everybody! Really tried to add some more informative text to the opening post, but I couldn't get the formatting to work haha (wanted the "ordinary" text left aligned, and the fluff centered. Oh well). Glad you still enjoyed it.

Pearson73 - Thank you!

helterskelter - Glad to hear it! What's your username there? And yes, those pesky Angels. Bah.

The Psycho - Haha thanks mate!

Ishagu - I've considered it, but for the basic troops I really like this more run-of-the-mill Legionnaire look. Not finished on the fluff yet, but I see this company as kind of separated from the Nostraman downward spiral, and more of a Terran/pre- or early heresy/early Nostraman/less-torture-more--killing kind of Company. Even within the wider Legion, in most formations I'd imagine that the crazed torturers/grisly decorated guys were to be found mostly in dedicated units (terror squads and raptors), while the rest focused on killing stuff in battle, especially early on.

Finished the squad's Sergeant as well, having loads of fun painting these:

Pearson73 - Thank you!

I've finished the fifth Marine for the squad, just waiting for a weekend to take the pictures (need to both home + have daylight, which really doesn't happen during the weeks). Until then, here's what's up next now that the first five Tacticals are done:

Lord Karkharas Cimion, the Praetor leading this merry company of heroes:

Thanks guys! Painting of the Praetor is in progress and I just ordered some Tartaros termies from the Prospero box, so that's what's up next. Trying to think of a theme for the company, any ideas? Considering Recon company or just Line company. Did the Night Lords even organize their companies in this manner or were they all just "general" companies?

BTB

Captain Abathar Rokhan, Master of the 61st Company of Legio VIII, the Night Lords

"It is dangerous to be right in matters in which the established authorities are wrong."

- The Philosopher Valtaire, M2

"In the beginning, I did not even look at him. I had heard the rumours, and I was afraid, very much so. Then, in my second year as Remembrancer to the Eight, he called upon me. Asking advice of the Serfs aboard the Bloodbird gave me little, as the Captain only spoke through his Legionnaires to us mere mortals. None had so much as entered his chambers, even less seen him without his armour. So there was none who could calm my fears or soothe my anxiety before I entered the gates that lead to his quarters.

He stood with his back turned to me, dressed in simple, dark robes in the colours of the Legion. A single skull adorned the robe, and beneath it the numerals '61' stood proud in pearly white against the dark, rough cloth. His form was monstrous, like all Astartes are made to be. I could not keep my body nor voice from trembling, as I announced my arrival.

He turned around, in an almost tectonically slow motion, and in the silence in which my words still hung it felt like I could hear the grinding of his muscles and tendons. Yet his face... It was angelic. I have never seen its like amongst the sons of Curze, and expect to never do so again, for all others of his kin have a dark cast to their regality, ranging from the sinister to the downright twisted. In Rokhan's features, there was the light of a summer sun bereft of day and cast amongst the stars. My mind went through a lurch from this anticlimax, like that when a ship suddenly accelerates and your stomach drops through your feet, so far was his appearance from what I had come to expect from his reputation.

He spoke. For perhaps the only time in my life, I cannot remember the precise words, for within mere minutes I would be subject to the most excruciating pain of my life, even though I could not suspect it at the time. But the meaning was this, by and large: I was a Remembrancer, and within this Legion of nightmare-dreamers and executioners divine, that was a curse and a blessing both. I had been scorned and spat upon by many, and tolerated by few, yet that would all change now. By mandate of Lord Rokhan himself, I would record our every deed from now until our doom, which he spoke of with the same certainty as one speaks of sunrise in the morrow, and I would walk in his footsteps from this moment onwards, and none could deny me passage. I remember my hopes soaring alongside my disbelief as he spoke.

There was only one more matter to see to, he said, a formality. I was still a human, and for what lay before us, humanity would not do. I was puzzled, but held my tongue.

Then I noticed the servitors that had activated in the corners of the large chamber, and the presence of several more Astartes. I was not surprised that they had entered without a sound, for silence was one of many skills possessed by the warriors of the Eight, but to say that their presence reassured me would be a grand lie.

As I looked back to Rokhan, a change dawned upon his features. As the sun turns blood red when it sets, so the angelic features of the Captain turned into the malignant gaze of a starved beast. My heart beat crazed rhythms within my chest as he spoke again:

'First your tongue, that you might write better. Then your eyes, that you might see no lies. Then your feet, that you might not stray from the path. Then your skin, as your gift to me for my kindness in elevating you so.'

Let us not speak of the next two hours. When it was done and my body no longer something I wished to remain in, nor no longer in one piece, the Captain spoke again:

'You are now of the Eight, Remembrancer. Let the first words you hear after this glorious rebirth be these: Horus Lupercal has turned from the Light of the Emperor. From this moment on, you will record a war like no other.'

I knew his words to be true, for twisted as they are, the Eight deals in punishment, fear and slow death, but not lies, never lies. And I wept tears of blood from my empty eye sockets."

- Ortos Marvelli, Remembrancer by the Decree of the Lord of Mankind, attached to Legio VIII.

Cheers,
BTB
