WORK IN PROGRESS - C&C welcome
The five figures sat huddled together over a tiny fire. Each figure was performing their ritual cleaning of their weapons after a fierce campaign of fighting. In the distance, sounds of intermittent las discharges or the revving of an armored vehicle could be heard as the Militarum forces of the Canthite 31st mopped up the last stragglers of the uprising on this vibrant world.
The five brothers of the War Shamans quietly contemplated and reflected on the past engagement. Each one bore sigils of the ancient Terran animal called the cougar all over their dark brown armor to reflect their totem animal and affiliation within their Chapter. Sergeant Soft Paw finished cleaning the teeth of his chainsword before taking out a pinch of a dried herb and sprinkling it over the fire. As the herbs burned the flames turned green and an aromatic smoke rose from the tiny flame. Each brother watched the smoke intently as it moved in several directions and quickly dissipated in the still air outside the ring of warriors.
“The spirit of this world is still disturbed,” noted Long Ear before retrieving the Auspex he kept on his belt. After adjusting some controls, he put returned it to his belt. “There is nothing on the comm channels about any signs of resistance and there is nothing being reported by the ships’ augurs in orbit.
“Then let this planet tell us the way.” Soft Paw retrieved a different herb from another pouch on his belt and tossed it in the fire. This time the flame turned blue as the plant burned but the smoke coming from it flowed along the ground in a straight line. Razor Claw stood up and moved out of the way of the snaking smoke. The smoke disappeared down a hole in the ground. “Our task is not done brothers, let us root out this prey that has taken refuge below the surface. Long Ear, scout ahead and look for any signs of a cave.”
The marine stood and walked off in the direction the smoke indicated while taking up the auspex once again. The other brothers readied themselves for a hunt while Soft Paw paused to thank the spirit of the planet and crushed the tiny flame under his armored boot. The rest of the squad took up the hunt and followed Long Ear.
By the time they had caught up to their point man, he was kneeling over something with his helmet off. He battle signed for his brothers to approach quietly and slowly and pointed down at the ground. In the nighttime light of the planet, the marines could see that Long Ear had found signs of their quarry. On the ground was a lone boot print that had been partially obscured by someone attempting to cover their trail. What was apparent to all the brothers was the size of the print: it was the same as their own. Long Ear directed their eyes over to a bolder not far away. On it were markings unknown to everyone present but what made them even more extraordinary was that they would only be visible to an Astartes unless someone shone a special light on them. Long Ear pointed further ahead and another symbol was visible.
“They were not expecting Astartes to be present in the response force. These signs are easy enough to follow. We will follow them but look sharp for any sensor augurs.” Long Ear took out his Auspex but noted nothing on the scan other than the five War Shamans. Razor Claw’s Plasmagun shone like a star on the display. Fire Walker checked his bolter before setting off in the direction the strange symbols indicated. Soft Paw followed with Long Ear right behind him putting on his helmet. Razor Claw and Sharp Tooth pulled up the rear.
It was not long before they found a hidden entrance to an underground cavern. The entrance was built to allow the size and bulk of an Astartes but did not show signs that it was used regularly.
“This is too convenient,” noted Sharp Tooth as he scanned the area around them.
Soft Paw responded, “I agree, but whatever is still here went in there. We are obligated to find and eliminate it. The Emperor demands nothing less of his sons.”
“It still feels like a trap.”
“We can agree on that.”
After checking the door for traps, the squad proceeded inside with weapons armed and trained on anything that might possibly be set up to stop a marine incursion.
