Lumpis Ultramarines - competitive list advice needed

Hi guys,

As I failed to painting challanges I thought I would start a painting/hobby thread to keep me motivated. I will start with my last failed vow: Tigurius.
But let me first start with a short introduction.

I started almost 14 years ago with our most beloved hobby. The Ultramarines caught my eye because of their amazing background. Back then there was a Box with paints and some old marines (I think they were from the 3rd edition) that I bought in a store that has been gone for a long time now. As with the most of us, my collection of plastic grey marines grew pretty fast. I was single, started working and I had a lot of fun with the 4th edition.
Well, over the years I still had fun but things change. I'm married, have a 2 year old son and much less time to enjoy the most awesomest hobby.

That is were I am now. I hope that I can improve my painting skills as I'm more a builder than a painter.
Enough with the ramblings.

As I said I will start with Tigurius.

It is not the original model because I like this one better :-)

I made some progress with the blue. But I have a second run of blue to do before I can move on.

Loth is one of the best infantry models FW ever did. The pose is simple but it just oozes psychic power ;)

That is why I'm using him as Tigurius.

The bowl in the background contain antoher project. A FW Castigator :)

It's Vallejo Ultramar :smile.:

I wasn't in the mood to paint yesterday. But I found a Hammer marine that was missing an arm and the head. I think I fixed him.

I'm also trying to find a nice Kill Team. We played several games and I used Scouts and they worked pretty good. What do you guys use in Kill Team?

I used 2 Scout squads in the last couple of games. One sniper squad and one boltgun squad with Land Speeder Storm.

Haven't used a power weapon on the sgt but that's what I thought about. Wasn't sure if it's worth the points.

Do you use heavy weapons in your squads? I used the heavy bolter and gave the guy relentless to be able to move and shoot.

  Scout Squad (5) - 70pts    Camo cloak
    1 Scout Sergeant: Sniper rifle,Boltgun
    4 Scout: Sniper rifle,Bolt pistol

  Scout Squad (5) - 90pts    Camo cloak
1 Veteran Sergeant: Bolt pistol,Power weapon
    4 Scout: Boltgun,Bolt pistol

  Land Speeder Storm (1) - 40pts
1 Land Speeder Storm: Heavy flamer

Not sure about the cloaks on the boltgun squad. I could drop them and the vet sgt and get an assault cannon for the speeder?

I'm still around.

My Hobby ambitions received a blow because my friend is not in the mood for 40k. :sad.:

However I continued with Tigurius and started 5 Scouts for Kill Team games. And I got a praetor cheap on eBay. Swapped his head though.

I'm on my mobile. SSorry for the picture

Scout Squad (5) - 65pts

Back from the field and I can provide a small battle report. I took some notes and made (not enough) pictures but I try to replay the battle.

I played the list I posted above. Enemy force were Necrons.

His list:

Illuminor Szeras (1) - 110pts
1 Illuminor Szeras
Immortals (5) - 85pts
5 Immortal: Gauss Blasters
Immortals (5) - 85pts
5 Immortal: Gauss Blasters
Canoptek Wraiths (3) - 120pts
3 Canoptek Wraith
med_gallery_33680_12936_133512.png
I was sure I could handle the Immortals but I was afraid of those Wraiths.
We played on a small board (48"x48") we had 4 mission markers.
Turn 1
Ultramarines
I started the game. The Storm outflanked and was put in reserve so I deployed my 5 man squad with the captain in the Razorback. Since we had nightfighting in the first turn I moved the Razorback forward and used the smoke launchers. Shooting was poor - no hits with the assault cannon (twin linked, right? ).
Necrons
He moved everything forward. Illuminor was attached to one troop of Immortals and he gave them +1 toughness. The Wraiths moved full 12" forward..
He reduced the Razorback to 1 hull point.
med_gallery_33680_12936_49799.png
Turn 2
Ultramarines
The Storm had some engine failures and did not deploy. The Razorback pulled back and the squad disembarked into cover. The Captain also disembarked behind the Razorback. I figured I would rather have 3 units and make him decide what he wanted to charge with his Wraiths rather than one. The 5 man squad was the nearest unit which would have made it possible for the captain to charge in in the next turn to support my men.
I scored on wound on the 5 man warrior squad with T4 but he recovered the wound with his reanimation protocol.
Necrons
Again he moved everything forward towards my small pocket of Imperial defiance. He scored no hits in his shooting phase. He seriously cursed the dice gods and I thanked the Emperor - could have been really messy. The Wraiths missed their charging throw with a 1 and a 2 to charge my 5 man squad.
med_gallery_33680_12936_624673.png
Turn 3
Ultramarines
The Scouts thought this is the moment to shine and outflanked from the left - the furthest board edge possible but I was still able to hit something with the Cerberus. I blinded both warrior squads and his HQ. They failed their Initative Test -> BS & WS 1 - YAY!
It's not necessary to talk about the rest of my shooting - I hit nothing.
Necrons
He moved his warriors a bit to shoot at my Storm but with BS 1 scored no hits. Then he did something that decided the game. Instead of charging my 5 man squad with his Wraiths he tried to charge the LS :ohmy.: and failed yet again.
Turn 4
Ultramarines
I moved my 5 man squad into position to charge the Wraiths. The Scouts disembarked. I wanted to throw both squads at the Wraiths. Rather to charge them at my turn than to get charged. However since the captain was behind my Razorback he wouldn't be able to charge them too - he was to far away.
One Wraith was killed by the combined shooting of my Razoback and Storm. The Wraiths had their WS reduced to 1 and the unaccompanied squad of Immortals also - hooray for the Cerberus.
Both squads got into combat with the Wraiths and they killed them leaving both squads right in front of his shooty Immortals.
Necrons
The squad with his HQ shot at my Storm which successfully jinked. The other squad had BS 1 and missed all their shots.
Turn 5
Ultramarines
Morale was high with the scouts and so they charged the Warrior squad with his HQ. My sarge challenged his HQ (he told me all the time that it's not a special HQ but than he took a look at his codex and realized he had 4 attacks - poor sarge). I hold on to the challenge and, oh well, the sarge died quickly but with honour!
The remaining scouts killed 2 Immortals but I lost two of my brave scouts in the process.
My 5 marines charged the other Immortals scoring no wound. The captain moved between both close combats determined to avenge the scouts and their sarge.
Necrons
The remaining scouts were killed by his Immortals.
Turn 6
Ultramarines
The Immortals from his HQ squad were killed by the Storm and Razorback. My captain charged his HQ and killed him with his PF. The remaining Immortal squad was reduced to one model.
med_gallery_33680_12936_489650.png
'I will kill you xenos scum!' And that he did.
Necrons
His last model scored no hits and my squad was unable to kill him.
The game ended. Storm and Razorback were each at one mission marker.
It was a nice game and I think I did ok with the list I had. That he used Wraiths surprised me a bit but since they were in a positio were I could charge them I used my chance to neutralise the biggest threat rather quick.
The Storm with his Cerberus launcher is worth all his points and I'm thinking of getting a second one. :biggrin.:
This is my first report and I might have missed something. I have to take better and more pictures. We are both by far no experts at rules but we tried as best we could to do everything by the book (literally ).
Thanks for reading.

Tigurius is almost finished. I hope I can finalize him until the end of the week.

med_gallery_33680_12372_17880.png

Apart from the helmet and the loincloth and those two thingys on his left upper leg the body is done. Base and shoulder guards are next.

Let me know what you think.

Fair point. You can use the generic, Power Armoured Librarian model as a counts as. I think he's more suitable as he's equipped the same as Tigarius.

It's always good to have Loth however, you can bring him in if you fancy running your Ultras as counts as Red Scorpions.

I know what you mean. Loth is indeed pretty good. :smile.:

I got the generic one too. But he will only be used if I need more than one Librarian which won't be that often since I'm just casual playing. But it's good to have options.

Vallejo Game Color, Model Color or Air Color?

I gave up with Game color as it has a more purple tone than blue, but not sure if it was only the batch I bought or if any of the other 2 is different in tone. I'm using Dark Prussian Blue as base and building up to Magic Blue but I found your tone of blue very appealing to my taste.

That's the one. I use it just on the characters. Drop some on the palette add water and go to town.

Great choice of colours, very deep so I'm looking forward to seeing more. As for the loin cloth, what about the classic colours with the symbol black on the yellow cloth?

Yeah, I think that will be the best way. I flipped through my Insignia Astartes yesterday evening and recognized that this is indeed the approved way to distinguish the librarian brothers. So yellow and black it will be. :)

So this is how it looks right now. I'm not 100% sure but I think I will leave the loincloth as it is. I painted yellow and used Agrax Earthshade.

Base & shoulderguards are next.

And I have to stop using my cellphone for pictures. :unsure.:
