Lumpis Ultramarines - competitive list advice needed

You raise an interesting point, Prot. I think it's the hobby beast in most of us that don't mind the hard work you have to put into those kits.

The Mastodon will be the last big kit for me though. It was way harder to put together than the Castigator or the Acheron. And this says a lot - the Mastodon is a big box so it shouldn't be too hard to put together but boy was I wrong. :-D

So my list for the tournament in July:

3 HQ

Cpt with shield + thunder hammer and jump pack

1 Lt with jump pack

1 Lt

6 Troops

2x5 Scouts with sniper rifles and cloaks + hvy bolter

4x4 Tacticals

3 Elites

10 VV with jump pack - 5x axe and shield; 5 sword and bolt pistol

5 Sternguards with special bolters

1 Venerable Dreadnought with laser and missile

3 Fast Attack

2x5 assault marines

1 Landspeeder with hvy bolter and typhoon missile launcher

Support

2x5 Devastators, each with 4 missile launcher + cherub

Thunderfire Cannon

I think that is about right. Haven't got the list on me as I'm in the office.

From the selections you can see that I tried to field a brigade but I think it is too restrictive. The issues I see

- Tacticals are pretty useless without hvy weapon or transport

- Assault Marines are probably not scaring anybody with 5 guys

I want to field only one detachment and I think I'm probably better off with a battalion.

The Cpt gets the relic armour and will stay close to the VV to kill some things in cc. One Lt would support the Assault Marines and the rest of the army hangs back (probably not the best idea because the Tacticals lack hvy/special weapons).

I don't want to have Primaris dudes in the list and I don't to field a hardcore list.

People have been complaining to me that the ASM are useless in this edition of the game. I had the thought of putting some in my list in another thread, and was told that they don't perform well at all. They seem good on paper, but perhaps it's just that they get focused too fast, because they are a threat.

Assault Marines? Unfortunately they have no damage output and no survivability.

Sadly, I must agree on the lack of utility in the current incarnation of Assault Marines. In days of old Assault Marines were a joy to play.... zipping up the game table, sowing damage and mayhem..... glorious! I wish GW would address this issue. These days I use Vanguards when I need a AM fix..... not as satisfying, but they are of more use in the current edition.

There seems to be consensus that Assault Squads are not worth it. I retooled my list and I think I will try some units in smaller games until the tournament. And I will also try to at least prime all marines on that list, which is quite a big deal for me

Cptn and the Librarian will support the VV. The Ironclad will arrive via drop pod and together they will hopefully put some pressure on the enemy.

LT, Scouts, Tacticals, Devastators and the Venerable will be my fire base along with the Scorpius.

What do you think?

Is the CP wisely spend on the Librarian?

There will be Necrons, probably Orks, other Marines, Mechanicum and Chaos.

I did a test game last week with half of my list against Necrons.

- Tome of Malcador wasn't really necessary so I won't take it in my 2000 points list.

- Ironclad had to walk half of the game before he was able to smash something. That was my mistake. I placed the pod too far away from the Necrons.

- Vanguard Veterans where awesome. They killed 10 warriors, 10 flayed ones and 5 Immortals (?). Only 3 survived but they performed really well. Shields soaking bullets (or Necron death rays ).

- The Venerable was also really good. Together with the devastators and the LT he built my firebase and they killed 3 tomb blades and the overlord.

I won 3:9 :D

Necrons had:

1 cryptek

1 overlord

10 flayed ones

3 tomb blades

2x 10 warriors

9 immortals

My list below:

+ HQ +

Librarian [7 PL, 122pts]:

Thanks!

Well, I will give the Assault Marines definitely a try. Probably with the Mastodon because it can transport a buttload of marines. :D

But next on my list will be priming my 2k list. :O

Wow, it has been a year since I last posted. :-O

A lot happened in the Last months. We bought a house, refurbished, moved and did all the things you have to do after buying a house (which basically means a lot of paperwork in Germany :-D).

Things settled down a bit in the last weeks. So I hope I can steal 1 or 2 hours to do some hobbying.

I now have a man cave in the basement - not big enough for gaming but assembling and painting and most important for storage.

On the top of my list are a Leviathan and a Redemptor.

Making big announcement and don't follow up. :-(

Well, I wanted to do an update once a week but I hit a major roadblock. I found mould behind the wood paneling in my basement. It's only in my hobby room.

So before I can get back into some serious hobbying it will take some time. But my hobby mojo took a big hit.

Hello brothers & sisters (probably?),

having set up a temporary workspace it is time to get things moving.

I have been asked to take part in tournament this fall. Being a fluff addict and a mediocre player at best my first reation was to tell them to blow ot out their ... backsides? On a second thought it might be a good opportunity to get some squads painted (or at least primed).

Since this event will be organised by the guys who pretty much destroyed our once relaxing gaming group it will be competitive. They are using a tournament format called 'ars bellica'. I'm not sure this a thing outside of Germany.

Here is a quick rundown of the rules:

- 1250 points

- only 1 detachment

- only 1 faction

- no LOW

- no unit more than once from HQ, Elite, Fast Attack, Heavy Support & Flyer

- max 3x of the same Troop choice

- no FW model with more than 350 points incl all weapons and stuff

I thought of 2 different lists.

1. fast list

10 Vanguard Vets with Jump Packs + smash Cpt

6 Bikes (+ Attack Bike) + Librarian on bike

3x5 Scouts with Sniper Rifles

2. shooty list

Leviathan Dreadnought

Whirlwind

3x5 Scouts with Sniper Rifles

These are my initial thoughts. I know I can copy some list from the net but I want to come up with my own and I have to practice with it.

Any thoughts or comments on those 2 ideas?

Primaris are no option for me.

Im surprised no one has chimed in but I think the Leviathan list is the common choice purely for destructive and survival reasons. I think it would be difficult to play against in that sort of environment. But if you lose it early, you’re probably screwed.

Thx Prot!

I was able to test the fast list.

Smash Cpt on bike

Librarian with Jump pack

10 Vanguard Vets with shields

5 Assault Marines

6 Bikes

6 Scout bikes

1 Stormraven

I think that was it, I deleted it After the game - not sure why. :-/

I was up against Necrons

1 Cryptek

1 Command Flyer (?)

5 Immortals

9 Tomb blades

6 Destroyer

1 Ark (?)

Both bike squads were ok. Combined with the HQ guys and the raven I was able to destroy the destroyers in T1.

My Vanguard were destroyed by 36 shots from the tomb blades. After that it went slowly against me. I lost but I think I will try this again. I will drop the raven and take Sternguard Vets in a pod and probably a squad of Tartaros dudes.

Necrons are a tough matchup for marines especially when we’re infantry heavy. Most of the time I’m facing the additional minus AP Tomb world. (Forget the name)

That on Destroyers, especially 6, can be devastating. The command barge can be strong with the right relic. Id probably drop the Stormraven too. They just feel too expensive for the time being.

Yeah, he gave the command barge something where ignored damage of 1 and with those damn shields I wasn't able to kill it. It had 3 wounds left at the end though.

We will face of again. So I think killing the destroyers was ok but killing those tomb blades will help, too.

I thought of using something from the Vigilus book. I could give those Sternguards a second chapter trait and use the Imperial Fist trait and ignore cover.
