!!! KelboooooooooornnI have your head

So, some edits have been made for the facts. Almost all of Simison's critiques have been taken into account and the issue with fact 35 has been rendered moot. The fact for Sedna has been removed to make space for the full Pariah series and will instead be used to kickstart the facts for the early Great Crusade. The Wardens of Light battle upon Lysithea has been removed (sorry Mikhal), albeit not lorewise, to make space for the 20th's taking of the Anankarian (Ananke) group.

Just to have all the facts in one place, here is my suggested order

Fact 1: The original Lightning Bearers were not drawn from any one region, but instead were selected for their genetic purity. They would eventually take their name in homage to the Thunder Warriors, seeing themselves as the natural successor to the unstable yet early pioneers of the Emperor's gene-enhanced warriors.

Fact 2: Although inducted next, the Second Legion would never serve in the Unification Wars and was kept apart from the other Legions during development, leading to whispered rumors over their status. It would not be until 10 years into the Great Crusade would the II Legion deploy in open combat.

Fact 3: Likewise, the Third Legion would run into troubles with its gene-seed that delayed its deployment until after several of its brother Legions made their way to the frontlines. Unlike the Second, the Third Legion would not miss the Unification Wars, bloodying itself in the Shakletian Desert.

Fact 4: Recruited from the Paladin Cults of North Ind, a society that placed honour above life itself, at first there seemed to be nothing remarkable about the 4th. This illusion was dispelled as, upon their first deployment, they launched a dawn assault via aerial vehicles that saw the leaders of the Pan-Pacific Empire massacred. Their mode and time of assault gave them the title of Morning Stars.

Fact 5: Achieving deployment earlier than many of it's brother Legions, the majority of the Fifth originated from the religiously united techno-barbarian states of Jermani. An aggressive and competitive nature aimed toward the First gave rise to bloody battles that garnered accusations of gene-seed deficiencies.

Fact 6: The Sixth Legion was recruited from Nord American tribes in order to obtain more Legionaries so that the Unification War's momentum would continue as the remaining opponents enjoyed impressive fortifications. The peculiarities of their gene-seed lead to increased physical proportions and strength compared to other Astartes, but also an abnormally slow gestation period that made it difficult for the Sixth to gain in size and limiting them to the role of support forces against the tyrant Narthan Dume's forces in Mezo-Merika. Upon their depature from the Sol System, they were forced to deploy alongside the Third Legion.

Fact 7: Hailing from Sudafrik, the Seventh Legion's early campaigns in Gyptus and Nordafrik earned them the name of The Shepherds of Eden, adhering to a strict chivalric code that saw them cast as liberators rather than conquerors.

Fact 8: The resilient people's of the Kulatic League, located in the deep, frigid North, were early on identified as a potential source of aspirants, given their impressive endurance in the face of murderous tyrants and merciless weather. After a decades-long purge of their original religion, the Eighth displayed the ruthlessness of zealots as they rooted stubborn foes in their debut battles in the Sol System.

Fact 9: The survival of many of the Ninth's aspirants despite a strenuous gene-seed implantation increased a self-belief in their innate superiority as warriors, something inherited from their Pansylvanian culture. To their foes the Pansylvaniak's presented an iron wall of discipline and coordination that shattered all before them. This would be aptly proven in the culling of the Valerian Hive and the downfall of the Neanthrope rulers that had held it.

Fact 10: Assembled from warriors of Nordafrik and Europa (Franc in particular), the Tenth would see the end of the Unification Wars as their first battle. Whether an honour or not, the Tenth can rightfully claim that during Unification they faced a foe no other Legion did. When the biological degeneration of the Thunder Warriors forced the Emperor to euthanize the proto-genetic warriors, it would fall to the newly constituted Tenth Legion to eliminate them.

Fact 11: Unlike any other Legion, every member of the Eleventh was chosen to a much higher standard than the norm with many members authorised by the Emperor himself before the Legion would eventually be born beneath the gaze of The First Tempest.

Fact 12: One of what would become known as the 'trefoil Legions', the Twelfth would be held back after induction, separating them from their brothers. It is rumoured that they would become part of a intense experimentation phase, tied closely to their odd Pariah nature with recruits coming from South Franc, Kreol, and Basquia.

Fact 13: Unlike many, the present-day name of the Eagle Warriors dates back to the Unification Wars themselves, where their penchant for using rapid assaults to outmanoeuvre their foes earned them praise from as high as the Emperor himself. Like many they were recruited from peoples that had put up determined but not suicidal resistance against the armies of the Emperor, in this case the denizens of Kentral Americ's radiation tainted jungles.

Fact 14: Heralding from the Shakletian salt deserts of Terra, the so-called 'sightless Fourteenth' found both it's size and reputation hindered by both an unstable gene-seed that inflicted blindness on more than a few aspirants and a fondness for ambush tactics instead of the more sensational assaults their brother Legions were famed for.

Fact 15: The Fifteenth Legion was one of the most audacious projects ever undertaken by the Emperor. Although successful, the cost was hideous, rendering most its aspirants from the jungles in Hy-Brasil useless corpses. Its first campaign was undertook with a force of no more than 200 Astartes, by the end of which they had earned the Cognomen of 'The Wraiths', for tactics that relied not upon open battle but terrifying the foe into surrender through extreme psychological warfare combined with their unnerving nature.

Fact 16: The Sixteenth demonstrated from its first battle an expertise in fighting in three-dimensional warfare, destroying their target through a combination of boring machines and aquatic assault. This would be reinforced by their campaign on Neptune, and would quickly establish the heavy cost they would pay for the sake of victory.

Fact 17: The Seventeenth Legion were recruited from the Asiatic border regions of the Pan-Pacific and Ursh Empires. Caught between these two titanic forces, the recruits displayed a stoicism and devotion to tradition that served them well as Astartes. However, the Seventeenth would be unable to deploy on its own before the onset of the Great Crusade, due to gene-seed complications, leading them to deploy in conjunction with the Ninth.

Fact 18: The early Eigthteenth Legion suffered from rampant internal rivalries and infighting due to a quirk in their gene-seed that left much of their old memories intact. This disunity led to huge casualties during their first true test against the Vapour Wraiths of Jupiter, earning the Emperor's ire and leading him to punish the 18th with decimation before ordering they be split into smaller support units under the command of other, more trustworthy legions.

Fact 19: The Phantoms were a Legion of superlative swordsmen that became renowned for its members' actions in single combat. Drawn from the city of Mariana within the Atlanta Wastes, they drew upon that domain's culture of assassins to slay Sud-Afrik tyrants and Urshek warlords, despite a relatively small size.

Fact 20: The Vessorid warriors of the Zealandia wastes made for skilled but destructive recruits for the Twentieth. The divisive and cruel culture that birthed its aspirants showed clearly in its furious assaults. Criticised for cruelty and individualism, the Legion nearly collapsed from in-fighting until order was restored by Chapter Master Cassus.

Fact 21: With the completion of the Unification Wars, the Legiones Astartes now stood as the Emperor's primary shock force with the forced retirement of the berserk Thunder Warriors. This was in spite of the fact that several Legions had yet to complete the Alpha induction, such as the II, XVII, and others. A little less than 45,000 served the Emperor in Mk I plate.

Fact 22: The savage subdugation of the Selenar Gene cults upon Lunar would earn the Third Legion the epithet if 'Blood Wolves', after the Selenites demanded that the Emperor call of his wolves even as their halls ran with the blood of their people. Though they had seen action in the Shakletian deserts, this marked the true forging of the Blood Wolves.

Fact 23: Eliminating the War Witches of Venus and their Lletho Gholem armies would fall to the the 1st, 6th and and 16th Legions in what was known as the Mehr Yasht campaign. While the 1st lead the anihilation of the Witch Covens in isolation from their brothers, the fierce warriors of the Sixth tore through the psyker's armies - matching the foul constructs in size and strength - and the Sixteenth attempted to flank, encircle and cut off any isolated elements that made themselves a target.

Fact 24: The Jovian Ranges, the satellites and moons in orbit of the Gas Giant Jupiter were infested by numerous vile xenos species and renegades. The 16th are recorded as having partucipated in purgings here, with the 9th bringing the moon of Callisto into compliance and the 20th putting their brutal talents to use against the forgotten colonies of the Anankarian group, purging the renegade's leaders upon the Xenos derelict their 'government' called home.

Fact 25: The moons of Jupiter were not the only orbital bodies in the Solar System to suffer taint. While the Saturnine Ordos that occupied the rings of Saturn joined the Imperium willingly, the rebels known as the Ringers were forcefully subjugated by the 19th upon their stonghold at Iapetus. Likewise, the Xenos infested moons of Enceladys was taken by the 12th, cementing their reputation inspite of the shadowed events of Lysithia.

Fact 26: After failed attempts to purge the Dirigiscrae from Neptune, the Sixteenth were called in to finish the job. The brutal, inglorious and drawn out campaign would eventually be concluded, but at such a high cost that the Legion could not operate independently once the Great Crusade began. A comment attributed to Malcador would see the Sixteenth known from then on as the Drowned Men.

Fact 27: The Eighth, know known as the Godslayers, were marked bitterly by the Solar Wars. The campaign known as the Screaming, where the populace of the Azurite cities above Uranus were twisted into abomanations, saw only a few dozen survivors out of the hundreds of Godslayers committed. One of these, Promeatar Thyris, rose to leadership before displaying his merciless approach to war in the Disharmonia purges on the fringes of the system.

Fact 28: The ice planetoid of Pluto was discovered to host a surviving Abominable Intelligence from the Dark Age of Technology, determined to defend itself. The twelth Legion, the Apostles of War, were assigned to its destruction. Relying on their speed to protect them, the apostles closed with the AIs gun constructs in melee before hacking their way to the Abomanation's processor core. Their victory earned them the approval of the Mechanicum, cementing the new pact between the two empires.

Fact 29: By far the most bloody conquest of the Solar wars was the destruction of the false planet of Sedna. The assault would be lead primarily by the First Legion and featured the first official deployment of the Tenth. However a total of six other Legions also participated, these being the Third, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, Seventh, Eighth and Thirteenth Legions

Fact 30: The First Legion was known for two known gene seed abnormalities. First was the large number of psykers amongst its ranks, which while not approaching the nature of the eleventh, was substantially greater than in most of its brother-Legions. In particular they became skilled at the arts of divination, able to outmanouver and defeat their enemies before battle was even joined.

Fact 31: Though the Tenth had no more than the average number of psykers within its ranks, here too was an irregularity. In order to conserve their meager strength the psykers of the Tenth banded together within conclaves. Within these groupings Pyromancy arose as the most practiced and sometimes solely practiced psychic discipline, first through natural tendency and later through tactical expediency.

Fact 32:The 7th Legion, the Shepherds of Eden, possessed their own unique ability as a result of their geneseed, named Somoptis among their ranks. They were capable, in essence, of seeing through their enemies. Every weakness, every old wound, every brittle bone was laid bare to the seventh. Using this ability, Legionaries could lay low foes that otherwise outmatched them.

Fact 33: The anomaly within the Gene Seed of the Drowned Men, was lesser in nature, a single mutation within a single organ. Regardless, it would prove exceedingly useful within the 16ths chosen arenas of war. The mutation to their Lyman's ear made it exceedingly difficult to unbalance or disorient them, no matter what atmospheric qualities or irientations they fought in.

Fact 34: The Gene Seed of the Blood Wolves bore not an advantage, but what can downright be considered an affliction. It was not unknown for Legionaries of the Third to lose any semblance of discipline in the midst of combat, mindlessly slaughtering their way towards what they believe to be the halls of the fallen.

Fact 35: One of the more controversial aspects of the Legiones Astartes were the Soulless Space Marines. Early testing indicated that it was not possible for a gene-seed to be implanted into one of the Untouchables with all test subjects suffering from a 100% fatality rate. An additional obstacle was the rarity of such individuals preventing any practical way of creating a legion.

Fact 36: The Emperor discovered a workaround that has yet to be replicated. Instead of implanting a gene-seed into a Pariah, Pariah genetic markers were imbued into a gene-seed. Although capable of creating a Pariah Astartes, what would follow would be a series of experimentation that would affect four of the 20 legions.

Fact 37: The first successful manifestation would be seen in the VIIIth Legion. Although not true Soulless, the battle-psykers demonstrated a new set of powers who's sole purpose was to counter Warpcraft. Eventually labeled as 'Warp Suppressants', they were incapable of using the Warp for any other purpose than destabilization. No matter how often tested, a Warp Suppressant was never able to manifest flame, peer into the future, or empower their bodies.

Fact 38: The next stage of the Soulless Marines would experience both success and failure among the 12th Legion. In order to stabilise the experimental union between Pariah biology and gene-seed, the Emperor designed a two-stage process. In most of the Legionaries of the 12th Legion, their true nature would lay dormant, until triggered by an event of extreme duress. However, there was an unintended side effect that nearly ruined the newborn Legion. Those who's Blank natures had activated proved a hazard to allie and foe. The Legionary's eyes became living weapons as they sought to disrupt the souls of those around them, regardless of the Legionary's will.

Fact 39: The Fifteenth Legion would be the culmination of these experiments with all of the terrifying implications involved. Every Legionary of the XVth was a Soulless without exception. Yet, although the experiment was a complete success, the consequences of such a force soon became apparent. With such a heavy concentration of beings who's very nature unsettled humanity, few could withstand long-term contact without suffering ill effects. Additionally, the gene-seed implantation success rate was horrendous, leading to the XVth being dwarfed by its brother Legions within a few decades of the Great Crusade.

Fact 40: After the successes and failiures of the Pariah project in the 15th, the 17th would be the final Legion to be involved in the Pariah experiment. Intended to be a comprimise in effectiveness, the 17th lacked the numbers of the Soulless present in the 12th and 15th, but also the drawbacks suffered by those Legions. At the same time their Pariahs were stronger than the warp suppressants of the 8th, making them stable tools against the warp weilding tyrants that the Emperor sought to throw down.

Editing in progress.

This round of edits:

Added a reference to the 6th's physical size in fact 6.

Fact 24, The 1st given a role in in the Mehr Yasht campaign, in part to dilute the presence of the 16th and in part to set up their role in the Ghost Crusade. Since there a degree of separation between the First and the other Legions in the campaign, the Drowned's book fluff is still correct.

Fact 22 had overlap, so we brought back Sedna and I renumbered the facts accordingly.

Working on the first 20 of the next Facts Batch. Currently I don't really have facts for the Morningstars, Shepherds of Eden or what will become the Warriors of Peace. The rest are subject to change upon feedback.

Fact 1: The First Legion, the Lightning Bearers, spent the Great Crusade engaged in their own secret Ghost Crusade. Under the Emperor’s instruction they sought out worlds that had fallen entirely into the fell influence of the warp. Fighting such battles alone and unremembered, they left in their wake a string of barren worlds empty of human life until their time came for recolonisation.

Fact 2: The 2nd Legion was withheld from the Great Crusade for nearing on a decade before their first deployment. Their tactics were akin to those of the Blood Wolves and Ebon Blades, often leaving a single city on each planet they set foot on in utter ruin and cowing the rest into compliance as a result. Where other Legions had been decimated by savage battles in their early years and even fractured into lesser forces, the addition of the 2nds strength under Enoch Rathvin was a welcome reprieve, though their discreditirs mockingly labelled them ‘The Rout’, for their eagerness to chase down a fleeing foe.

Fact 3: Three years into the Great Crusade, the Blood Wolves returned to Terra for the worst of reasons. They had been recalled to deploy sanction upon their own homeland. Hakon the Red’s rebellion was brutally crushed and Jurfiks peoples slaughtered. When the Blood Wolves returned to the stars, it was in the ashen grey of Jurfik’s razed hives and the arterial red of their own people’s blood.

Fact 4: Maintained their traditions?

Fact 5: Though the awakening of psykers within the Storm Riders was initially seen as a blessing, in its wake came a surge of mental instabilities among officers and line troops alike. Though their psycho-indocrination ought to have prevented such occurences, the Vth found themselves crippled in battle after battle as their cohesion fell apart. After Lord Commander Edrick Yeshie - second Legion Master and the Vth’s strongest psyker - succumbed to schizophrenia, his replacement - Lord Commander Irvin Ruel - placed a ban on the use of Battle Psykers in an attempt to slow the rate of the breakdowns.

Fact 6: Named the ‘Juggernaughts’ by most other Legions and Imperial Army regiments, the Iron Sixth attempted to quickly compensate for the significant casualties at Oberon through the use of augmentics and dreadnaughts to quickly return their wounded to combat. They also themseves stewards to the attached and then understrength Blood Wolves. The relationship between the two Legions would sour early as the Juggernaught’s disciplined methods and humanistic tendencies put them at odds with their cousins.

Fact 7: The Shepherds of Eden were known for their relationship with their Imperial Army allies, asking much but always placing themselves at the heart of the fighting. They fought with a quite pride, dreaming of the glories that the future might have brung.

Fact 8: The Godslayers persisted in their merciless attitudes long past their departure from the Sol System. Despite the criticisms leveled at them, Segmentum Solar had enough enemies warranting extermination that none with authority truly wished to disrupt the 8ths operations by attempting to restrict their operations. Those few worlds of use that fell under their blades were deemed a necessary sacrifice for the Imperium’s expansion.

Fact 9: ?

Fact 10: The Tenth was a grim Legion in its early years. Their attitude seemed to be almost the opposite of what an Astartes’ should be. Cautious where others were bold and steadfast where others advanced, they seemed to hold some deep seated belief that they were far from the pinnacle of the Galaxy’s war beasts. While this attitude slowed their compliances, it also rendered themselves near immune to surprise attacks and war beasts that could bring the assaults of other Legions crashing to a halt.

Fact 11: Where other Legions participation in the Imperium’s expansion grew as the years passed, the 11th’s seemed to dwindle. Early on their cadres brought great power to their wars and crushed many armies with their sheer psychic strength. Later they became reclusive and withdrawn. Rumors began to circulate of a terrible geneseed affliction that left its victims twisted in mind and body. Even the so called Pariah Legions, who the Twelfth would rarely share even the same planet with, noted their withdrawal.

Fact 12: The Apostles of War were almost destroyed by the arrogance of Legion Master Guaire Amalasan, their Legion near broken by the onslaught of an underestimated Ork Waagh. Only the actions of Arngrim Valten and his comrades, the brothers Dumah and Cervantes de Leon, ensured that the Apostles held until the Eagle Warriors could come to their aid. After Amalsan stepped down, the Apostles of War spent much time attempting to restore themselves to their former glory.

Fact 13: The Eagle Warriors were one of the premier Legions of the early Great Crusade. Reaping a record of victories enviable in both efficiency and number, while their numbers outstripped many of the more diminished Legions. Though they lacked their brother’s allies amongst the Collegia Titanicus and Knights Questoris they made up for it through the prodigious deployment of armoured forces that in concert could bring down even those Titan-analogues that their foes could field.

Fact 14: During their participation early in the Great Crusade, the 14th were more insular than many of their brethren but nevertheless maintained a rigid record of distinction and respect from those they fought alongside. Though they took no name of their own, the Imperial Army regiments that served with them dubbed them the Tempest Blades.

Fact 15: The Wraiths were the sole Legion to depart the Sol System without a single battle honour. The instability of their Geneseed kept their numbers prohibitively small and their Pariah nature made the attachment of Imperialis Auxilia units doomed to failiure. Instead the Legion was deployed as single independent units, sometimes only a single squad, for the purposes of reconnaissance or exploiting their Pariah nature to sow fear among the Emperor’s foes. For this, many died unrecognised and unlauded.

Fact 16: After appalling losses against the Dirigiscrae on Neptune, the 16th was too weak to operate independently upon leaving the Sol System. Instead, Legion Master Hennasohn decreed that the 16th would be split into individual fleets called ‘Psalidas’, each assigned to an expeditionary fleet and ruled by a council of Pelargic Monarchs with an Ayatolla at its head. The relationships between these tendril fleets and their hosts would vary between amicable and near hostility. While the Psalidas would grow in both individual strength and overall number, they did not fight as one.

Fact 17: ?

Fact 18: Placed under the watch of officers from other Legions and splintered into small and tightly monitored task forces, Astartes of the 18th placed their pre-induction experience in gang tactics to good use. Acting as callous assassins, saboteurs and intelligence gatherers they proved effective enough that the pall of judgement that hung over them would begin to lessen with time. Eventually they would be given the right to be led by commanders drawn from their own ranks and fought together in ever greater numbers and be dubbed the ‘Silent Chorus'.

Fact 19: Self named the Stygian Phantoms, the 19th soon earned a reputation for grandiose and complex strategies that won them many stunning victories. Their battles against the Eldar in particular saw them famed for their swordsmanship. However a combination of glory hounding that saw them unwilling to work alongside others and the occasional exploitation of their convoluted strategies by a disciplined foe saw them suffer more losses than they ought to have.

Fact 20: The 20th Legion would serve as the Emperor’s retribution against those that feigned compliance but still carried treachery in their hearts. Spread across the nascent Imperium, detachments of the 20th put down rebellions and brought traitors to bloody justice. Though their cruelty was put to use this way it was not wholly restrained and when a punitive action on Ulgion turned into an all out massacre, Legion Master Kallast was slain in an honour duel by Legion Master Antonidas of the 19th, and the 20th brought to heel.

For the other half, we could do Early GC Legion relations (rivalries and kinships) as well as stuff about other factions and notable events/locations.

On fact 6: The Wolves are actually already attached to the VIth shortly after Terra; As they were too small a force at that time.

Maybe denote that's when the rivalry started; or just have the wounds taken at Oberon lead to the first widespread use augmentations, cybernetics, and mass Dreadnought internment.

Nice one, only one thing. Ebon Blades is the name of one of the XXth many indipendent fleets.

There's no official cognomen in place for the entire Legion back then.

Hi, I'm Lurkerinthelight :~) I've been reading through over the last few weeks and this is amazing! Actually made an account to post in here because of this, and wonder how i can get involved, I love the Crimson Lions and the Drowned colour scheme is beautiful, while the Wardens of Light's artwork is ultra impressive, Sun Ce was one of my favourite characters in Dynasty Warriors 3 back in the day. I've collected Warhammer 40000 in my youth, and had a short foray into the Heresy when it first came out, but didn't like how little you could go to create your own chapter, or legion or whatever. I guess you don't need any more legions but would otherwise love to contribute if i can :)

Greetings, Lurker!

Thank you for your kind words and feedback (and of course participation) is more than welcome. We're especially honored as you signed in just to contact us. :)

Griff already sent you a pm with our discord link.

There's plenty of stuff going on, with which you could join: blackshields, mortal regiments, Knight Households, Forgeworlds, whatsoever.

We're eager to chat with you.

Cheers

Heyhey. Welcome to the dark brotherhood. As kel mentioned, there are a lot of ways to contribute. U could take over an exemplary fleet which will later become an order for example.

Looking forward to chat with you about your ideas.

I've started getting an interest by W40k in the end of 2016 and I have being eating the lore since then, the first fan made ccommunity that I've seen (except the Bolter and Chainsword) was thw Homebrew community on wikia, but i never lost the interest of the lost legions and some months later i've found this community. I hope that I can contribute with this project, that would amazing.

The Foundational Tenets of the Librarius Program

  • The Warp is no staid weapon to be called with a whim, but wilder than fire and eager to consume.
  • The first duty of a Librarian is to guard oneself, without which leads to utter ruin.
  • Wisdom and discipline are the tools that allow Warpcraft, seek them.

Second point is missing "a" in front of Librarian, and the second part of the sentence doesn't seem to fit with the first part (in terms of grammatical structure)

You got "tenet" right the first time, but got it wrong the second :P

Otherwise I approve
