General Discussion Secundus

Given the sheer number potential black books we're seeing already, I'm going to argue against having 3 slots and having just 2 given. 1 might be more wise, but I'm not sure how I feel about having a 1 or 2 page section for a faction.

Darkcommander, kneel.

Darkcommander of Bolter and Chainsword, as Project Leader and Master of the Brotherhood of the Lost, I now raise you from Auxiliary to Legionary.

Henceforth, you will be recognized as the undisputed master Stone Dragons, Successors of the Tenth Legion, the Sons of Niklaas!

It occurs to me that we can explain the rise of the Qarith Empire in our universe as a reaction to the BotL Primarchs. The mere act of the Chaos gods grabbing them and then depositing them at different points in the galaxy can be used to explain a butterfly effect affecting the Warp storms/Warpspace around the Qarith homeworld. In canon, we can say a late storm destroyed them, allowing Ullanor to thrive.

It would be nice if we have the resources.

Legion sizes, Post-DoR

Pre-DoR (using base estimates from earlier calculation) vs Post-DoR

Harbingers - 209,400 legionaries vs 192,400 legionaries

Crimson Lions - 150,400 vs 113,400 legionaries

Void Eagles - 166,600 vs [110,950] - [22k lost when the Morning Stars defect, 33,650 lost in the battle assuming the SL inflict 25% of SL's size casualties]

Halcyon Wardens - 243,100 vs 235,100

Iron Bears - 113,900 vs 1,900 [...we need to have a chat about this one.]

[Will do the rest later.]

Berserkers of Uran - 140,900 vs [124,900] - [Not counting the Shepherds]

Godslayers - 128,150 vs 93,750

Warbringers - 197,500 vs [176,000] - [9k lost against the DS and 12k lost to the Preds is the random number I pulled out.]

Fire Keepers - 199,300 vs 173,300

Wardens of Light - 118,200 vs 78,000

Eagle Warriors - 124,950  vs [112,455] - [All I did was inflict a 10% penalty]

Dune Serpents - 166,000 vs 30,000 & 42,000 [Added a bit more to the numbers in Subjugation to represent detachments elsewhere in the galaxy.]

Grave Stalkers - 27,300 vs 22,300

The Drowned - 173,350 vs 153,350

Warriors of Peace - 103,050 vs 89,050

Steel Legion - 134,600 vs [120,940] - [Again, just guess at a 10% loss]

Scions Hospitalier - 237,750 vs 83,212 - [This number was harder to figure out. 95,100 lost at Untara, and then I divided the other half of the legion into halves to represent the rest of the Scions getting hammered in the other three ambushes.]

Predators - 133,050 vs [83050] - [Represented by the destruction/defection of three Tribes and losing an additional 17k from the ambush.]

Where I could, I used the direct numbers from the books. Summing it all up, we get this:

Pre-DoR

Loyalists

  • Crimson Lions - 150,450
  • Void Eagles - 144,600
  • Halcyon Wardens - 243,100
  • Iron Bears - 113,900
  • Shepherds of Eden - 113,200
  • Fire Keepers - 199,300
  • Wardens of Light - 118,200
  • Dune Serpents - 166,000
  • Scions Hospitalier - 237,750
  • Predators - 133,050

Total - 1,619,550 Legionaries

Traitors

  • Harbingers - 209,400
  • Berserkers of Uran - 140,900
  • Godslayers - 128,150
  • Warbringers - 197,500
  • Eagle Warriors - 124,950
  • Grave Stalkers - 27,300
  • The Drowned - 173,350
  • Warriors of Peace - 103,050
  • Steel Legion - 134,600

 Total - 1,239,200 Legionaries

[Honestly, with 1,239,200 Legionaries taking on 1,619,550, Icarion's rebellion looks a little reckless even with an additional Primarch on his side.]

One Day after the DoR

Loyalists

  • Crimson Lions- 113,400
  • Void Eagles- 110,950
  • Halcyon Wardens - 235,100
  • Iron Bears- 1,900
  • Shepherds of Eden - [113,200]
  • Fire Keepers- 173,300
  • Dune Serpents- 30,000
  • Scions Hospitalier - 83,212
  • Predators - 83,050

Total - 944,112

Traitors

  • Harbingers - 192,400
  • Morning Stars - 19,000
  • Berserkers of Uran - 124,900
  • Godslayers - 93,750
  • Warbringers - 176,000
  • Eagle Warriors - 112,455
  • Dune Serpents - 42,000
  • Grave Stalkers - 22,300
  • The Drowned - 153,350
  • Warriors of Peace - 89,050
  • Steel Legion - 120,940

Total - 1,146,145 Legionaries

At the cost of 100k marines, Icarion almost halves the Loyalist marines. The Shepherds, I'm not sure if they were attacked on the DoR. Still, with only a 200k advantage, Icarion needs to maximise his Primarch advantage and the utter confusion that is the first couple of years of the war.

Bonus round: Renegades

  • Wardens of Light - 78,000
  • Dune Serpents - 33,000

Wait, when did the Bears numbers drop to 113,900 pre DoR? Last there had been any talk of their size we had them between 160,000 and 180,000.

Because the bears take so long to create one Astartes. Sim went through every legion and adjusted the numbers.

Hmmm. Well the last I remember is after the increase in legion size for the extra 30 years of the GC the Bears had been upped to 205,000 and then the number was walked back to show the geneseed implantation length, but also to show they're hard to kill.

Fair enough, I'm fine with Bears being the second smallest legion pre-DoR, we're just going to have to adjust Kataii numbers to say 75,000? Keeps it in that 2/3rds losses ballpark, since that's where the original Kataii numbers come from.
