On founding a chapter - help for a DIY

Hello everyone,

I'm not sure if it should be posted here but I can't find any other forum for it.

My questions are about a chapter founding ;

First : Are the "executive" marines necessarily drawn from a chapter sharing gene-seed with the soon-to-be chapter ?

Second : How many "executive" marines are picked ? And I mean how many Techmarine and Apothecary.

Third (and most important question) : Let's say the chapter has been granted a planet. Before the gene-stock and armament leave Mars, are a few marines recruited (in the Sol system, to flesh out the chapter)? Or are all the recruitment made on the planet the chapter have been granted ?

The third point is the most interresting. Because if, on one hand, the "executive" leave with the gene stock and weapons, that means they'll have to wait for 20 years or so to beginn battle, to have sufficient man power. And they could be destroyed ultra fast.

On the other hand, if the chapter wait to be manned up to leave Mars, that means the recruits come likely from a planet in the Sol segmentum. Or they have been brought by space ship over dozen of Light Years from the futur home planet, wich make no sense.

Did anyone read anything a bit detailed on this subject ? Thanks in advance !

Edit :So to the Moderati out here, please don't turn me to dust, I just discovered the Liber Surgery... pinch.gif

Well, Generally they are can be, but to create one you need you need to get gene seed from the Adeptus Terra, so you must lodge an application from them. But yeah, you will need some marines from the actual original chapter. They also need to begin recruiting to have subjects to implant the seeds into. So after it's all granted it means that they will need to begin recruiting straight away. Once they find their planet, then they can withdraw from combat until the time that they have come to full man power.

Hello everyone,

I'm not sure if it should be posted here but I can't find any other forum for it.

My questions are about a chapter founding ;

Hello!

The whole concept of 'executive' Marines from the Founding Chapter was a fan creation, there's very little official info on the subject besides

-the use of slaves to help grow the required number of geneseed

- it takes a long time for all quarters of the Imperium to prepare for a Founding

- they're numbered, and although the names and colours are recorded it's a poor operation with multiple Chapters possibly sharing the same name and colour scheme (surely a loophole for us when we all hit on a cool scheme and name)

{EDIT: the Foundings are declared by Terra, and occur in large groups not by individual Chapters on a "as and when" basis, the closest exception to this is the Dark Angels requesting their geneseed be used in a particular Founding}

There's a few other little tidbits I don't remember off hand, but the whole Founding process is very vague.

The interpretation of it is up to you to be honest.

I admit I'm admit I'm not fully up to date with the codexes and stuff so there may be something in there that helps (or completely proves what I said wrong)

This doesn't help but all the same best of luck!

In my diy chapter one Captain from the founding chapter was selected to be the Chapter Master of the new chapter.

And the first "Generation" of Space Marines was trained by the founding chapter.

I don't know if that's even possible fluff-wise, but i hope it gives you an idea or 2.

To answer your more important question, the typical portrayal (as far as I'm aware) is of a Chapter taking the bulk of its recruits from its home planet (if it has one), rather than all being collected, gene-enhanced, psycho-indoctrinated, etc etc off planet.

So:

- a founding occurs

- X Chapter is announced to be created, and given Y planet (again, this scenario is only relevant to Chapters who are given a planet to begin with)

- at the same time, the materials are gathered (genetic, industrial, etc etc) and production begins to set them up with everything

- natives are screened and worthy aspirants collected up, in whatever way the training cadre or preliminary set up crew deem appropriate (remembering that they'll only have been given a planet if it's already been classified suitable for Astartes recruitment)

- first recruits begin to be transformed (alongside geneseed stocks being grown etc)

It's mentioned in a few sources, I think, that from the initial decision to create it, a Chapter can take up to 50 years to get up and going and be "combat-ready".

Very happy to be proven wrong on any of this :) As has been stated, fans have filled in a lot of gaps in this process using our own common sense and theory over the years, GW had actually not provided a huge amount of canon I don't think.

Are the only gene seed vaults on Mars? Or other forge worlds too?

The thing about foundings that never wholly made sense was how the original marines are trained and led, so executive marines kind of makes sense. Are there any novel descriptions of foundings?

There used to be an another location, but it got attacked and sacked by Iron Warriors in 990.41M or so. The lore mentions it as one of the only places where gene-seed was stored. So, it was not all on Mars. Whether it's all on Mars post that incident is then another question. No fluff supports that it's stored elsewhere, but besides the blurb above, no places other than Mars are mentioned either.

As for the novel descriptions, I am not sure what you mean but there is a decent summary here.
