Thread Ratings for News & Rumors?

Let's face it the Rumors threads are a mess.

Every post turns into a salty mess

or endless wish listing

that somehow get's turned back into more rumors.

In general I dislike thread ratings  but it perhaps it might be useful in N&R?

If IP Board has some sort of thread rating / star system - perhaps we can self moderate and weed out the good from the bad?

What do you think guys n gals of the BnC?

Think this will help?

just an idea to think about.  :tu:

thanks for taking the time to read this.

I know it's completely unnecessary, yet we have people copy and pasting everything and anything they read on the internet.

If it makes people think twice before posting it's done its job of self-moderating.

What if posters put their source in the thread title?

[ BoLs ]  Yet another Primarch is returning,  or [ 4Chan ] Chaos is getting a Dark Eldar make over  etc.

Also the super generic thread titles like  "GW future releases"   that technically could never be off topic forever.

Anyways trying to be constructive and not turn this into a rant.

I used to enjoy the New and Rumor section of the forum and get excited about new releases with fellow enthusiasts but lately not so much.

As ever the mods are discussing how to handle things. We've tried different approaches over the years and none seem to really work well.

It is a tough issue.

We can let things go (as we have done in the past) and then it just turns into a true crap-pile.

We can be super draconian (as we have done in the past) and people start crying about over-moderating (those tears don't really bother me though).

We can do like we do right now and every mod has powers there to try and clean things up. But again, people cry about over-moderating.

We could put a dedicated team of mods in there like we do in the army forums but the burn out rate in there is high when we do that (again something we have tried before).

Personally I am all for draconian moderating in N&R. I have ZERO problem burning posts that are not on topic, have no real information or are otherwise off topic.

But we will talk it over and tweak things and then go from there.

While I think N&R is one of the places where heavy-handed moderation is suitable, I think the point made about purposely vague or clickbaity titles is valid; you guys can be as purgey as you want but unless there's some good indication visible in either the title or via a thread rating as to the quality of the rumour, it just invites more people to come in and comment about nothing.

Tagging threads [boLS], [4Chan] etc might help. Or maybe there could be a 1-5 "Atia Rating" :P

Thanks for the insight from the mod team. For what it's worth...I'm also ok with heavy moderation in N&R ( not that you need my permission tongue.png )

I thought it was the section of the forum given to freshmen Mods as a hazing / right of passage kinda thing. But I guess the drop out rate would be too high.

Also wasn't thinking of thread ratings for pushing people out, it wasn't my intention. I would hope no one would ever take things so seriously and feel that way about the BnC. I mean we are talking about little plastic spacemen here.

No one was pushed out. 1 person left because they felt they should get to have things their way, regardless of the site rules. I'll point out said person left N&R but still posts in PCA last I saw.

Rumors and news are still going to show up, regardless of who thinks they are the main cog in the wheel.

N&Rs issue has nothing to do with who is dropping the info. It is the OT and pointless bickering. May just have to turn it into a free fire zone and airlock/slag some of the more troublesome individuals.

That usually settles things down for a time.

Would it work to have an auto-reply to the first post in each new thread from a mod with a "seems legit?" survey and a yes/no response?

That way even if people want to go off on tangents with wish-listing, those that come along for actual news can read the first post, read the Frater's general response, and then decide whether to read on or move along.
