"It is in our nature to create things that outlast us. So we strive, we craft, we build, we make, and we fight and do not yield. For within each frail human body born is the will to grasp the stars and walk a path unto eternity itself."

So, this is going to be the plog that chronicles my attempts at the XVIII legion - the Salamanders. To be honest, I haven't really picked a theme or time period for them, but because I've already done Vulkan, I guess they will be either pre- or early-heresy. This is the list that I am working towards (although it may change a little as I go on):

Salamanders - Covenant of Fire

HQ
Praetor - Cataphractii Terminator Armour, Digital Lasers, Mantle of the Elder Drake, TH/SS

  • 5x Firedrake Terminator Squad - TH/SS
  • Spartan w AC, FS, Multimelta

Troops
Tactical Squad

  • 9x Tactical Marines
  • 1x Sergeant - Artificer Armour, Powerfist
  • Rhino DT

Tactical Squad

  • 9x Tactical Marines
  • 1x Sergeant - Artificer Armour, Powerfist
  • Rhino DT

Elites
Legion Quad Launcher Support Battery

  • 3x Rapiers - Shatter Shell

L.O.W.
Vulkan

?????? ??????????? - ????? ??????

HQ
????????? (????????) - ???? ????, ????? ?? ?????????, ????????? ??????, ??????? ??????, ????? ?????

Troops
??????? ????

  • ??x ??????? ???????, ?x ????? ???

Elites
?????????? - ???? ????, ????? ?????

The list is 2,403pts, so I'll eventually add another 100pts. Oh, and what could the second detachment be? You'll have to find out... happy.png

As for the progress update, I've done one tactical marine, which is pretty impressive considering the slowness of which I paint (see below). The lighting I took the picture in was terrible, so hopefully I can get a better picture later. I have a squad of Tartaros Terminators primed, which were pledged for Loyalty and Treachery (for the loyalists, ofc). I know that they're not part of the army list, but they came in the BoP box... and they look awesome, so I'll paint them up too!

And, if anyone's interested in my pathetic attempt at a freehand, here's a pic. I decided to go with the Maori designs because:

  1. That's what all the cool kids are doing, and
  2. I'm from NZ, so it seems fairly appropriate that I include some sort of local(?) pattern or whatever happy.png

Anyway, thanks for looking! smile.png

That tac legionaire is absolutely brilliantly done and there's nothing pathetic about that freehanding. I'm also happy too see I'm not the only one who thought tribal markings would be fitting for Salamanders. Can't wait to see more keep up the awesome work.

These look absolutely amazing. Can't wait to see more Foamy!! Love to see another person doing tribal markings; it's not something I would initially think of for Salamanders but once I saw Pyro's it all made beautiful, beautiful sense. The freehand looks good to me! What do you do for your green?

Currently I have a squad of Tartaros in the works, and I've nearly completed the first, so I'll post that later:

Just realised that I forgot to reply to your comments last update. Please keep the comments and criticism coming - I really, really appreciate them! wub.png

Indeed, it is fixed, and a glorious pic it is too! Looking forward to whatever you have in store. thumbsup.gif

Thank you! smile.png

Absolutely outstanding work on Vulkan. Always happy to see more Salamanders consider me subscribed definitely can't wait to see more.

Cheers! Vulkan took me quite a while, but it's good to see that the extra time I put into him paid off.

This should be cool! (Or hot)

Thanks! Although that last bit...

always good to see more 30k Salamanders.

Indeed it is smile.png Unto the anvil, brother!

To be honest, I may have stolen taken inspiration from the tribal markings on your own beautiful Ash Vipers. Good to see you approve! smile.png

Vulkan looks amazing! I am really liking the darker green colour scheme and that shoulder pad on the marine is just something else, great free hand !

Thank you smile.png Yeah, I do prefer the darker Salamanders scheme with bright highlights as it suits my painting style and its gives them a bit more contrast.

Once again, thanks for looking!

The fire licked at Orion's legs, and smoke choked the room. Flame provided the only light, and defeated the inky shadows in a ruddy, flickering glow. Braziers filled with incense were twirled and spun by robed acolytes. Orion was a Terran-born, but he had gladly accepted the Promethean Cult and sense of spiritual purpose it gave him. He accepted the searing heat that the fire brought him, and watched as a chaplain drew a chalky finger across his forehead, drawing the serpentine white swirls and patterns of Nocturnean tribal tattoos onto his charcoal flesh. Finally, the chaplain finished, and beckoned Orion forward. A hot brand of iron was presented to the chaplain, and the chaplain pressed the brand onto Orion's back. The smokey room filled with the stench of burning flesh, skin sizzling like roasting meat. Which, Orion grimaced, was exactly what is was. At last, the brand was drawn back, and Orion finally exhaled. The mark it left on his flesh was pink and puckered, a symbol of the upcoming conflict and a sign of his faith and loyalty to the Cult.

I've finished the first Tartaros Terminator, and I'm pretty happy with his paint job (although not so happy with the photos I've taken of him - if anyone has any tips on photographing small detail, I'd be interested to hear smile.png). Also, as you can see, I've decided on a basing scheme (and I've updated Vulkan and the Tactical Marine), and so I've done a group shot of the three completed marines with their completed bases! smile.png

So, without further ado I present to you OrionT'ken, of the First Chapter of the Eighteenth Legion:

The lord of the drakes looks awesome. You've set yourself a very high standard to keep to, I'm subscribed to this thread. GW recently published (online) a guide to taking photos of your miniatures, it's very informative.

The boy's arms were withered and broken. They had always been. Instead of a hand, his left wrist bore limp appendages that he had no control over, mockeries of fingers. The boy's right arm stopped above the elbow in a sort of scar-laced stump. But what the boy lacked in limbs he had in courage and valour. That was why he had been chosen. There were others like him - the radiation did that. Children born with strange... differences. The boy, in this regard, was unordinary. But so very, very different.

He knew this because the angels had said so.

I deserved that :P

Everything else is coming along great, too! Very curious about the small blurb, are the Sallies in the habit of taking on mutants? I'm guessing psyker here...

Just for Draakur tongue.png:

The boy was now a man, although he was unsure if that particular terminology could really describe his new state. Where once his face had been gaunt and scarred, it was now unblemished and full. And where once his arms had been mutated and swollen, there were flexible wrists and digits. True enough, they were augmentics - skeletal constructs of steel and plasteel plates that mimicked the structure of the lower arm and hand, but they functioned well enough. The man-thing thought as he chipped away at the marble, sculpting a form into the solid rock. He though about himself; was he really a man, a human? Or was he just a tool, a weapon? He had a simple purpose, and like the marble he had been carved and reshaped to fit this purpose. This saddened the man-thing. His single task was to destroy and extinguish life. He had been received and reborn solely for this singular purpose, and once he could no longer effectively kill and exterminate, he would be disposed and replaced. This also saddened the man-thing. So, he carved and created art. It was like he had destroyed so much and taken so much life, that he needed an escape. Wailing children, begging mothers. The destruction of entire planets, billions of lives extinguished by the press of a button and a blossoming inferno. Death. His gene-altered mind had seen so much destruction that he physically had to create.A defence mechanism and a psychological gag-reflex, he supposed. He had only one escape: art. His brow furrowed. That was not true, there was another. The man-thing opened the pamphlet and read.

"His hand lies upon all of us, and every one of us owes him our devotion. He guides us, teaches us, exhorts us to become more than we are, but most all," the man-thing read, "the Emperor protects."

I'll answer your C+C soon, when I can unveil the new models msn-wink.gif. Oh, and do keep the guesses coming, they are greatly entertaining.
