Using Future's floor polish as a pre-primer on FW models?

Recommended Posts

A few weeks ago or so I read about someone on here using a spray sealant like Testor's Dullcote as a sort of pre-primer on FW models with a lot of excess mold release agent. Which got me wondering if you could do the same thing with Future's floor polish. I know a number of people who have used it as final coat on models so why not a first coat? I have a giant bottle of the stuff that I will probably never use up so additional applications would be cool. cool.png

So what do you guys think? Anyone ever tried this or maybe another brush on sealer?

Testor's Dullcote spray has a *lot* of solvent in it. It's also matte (which means it has a matting agent in it that makes the surface dry rough when viewed under magnification - usually this agent is extremely fine talc or such).

Spraying this onto a washed and prepared resin model means the solvent helps to bond the stuff onto it (it softens the surface of the resin a little which aids bonding), and the matte finish then provides a surface with enough "tooth" to let you paint over it with your usual acrylics.

Even better is an automotive primer, as this achieves the same thing (plus being a primer) for faaaaar less money. Hobby sprays are too thick and don't contain enough solvent (and frankly aren't tough enough) to achieve the same results in terms of durability (and despite being sold as "primers", they often in fact merely coloured paint and not proper primers).

Using Future is pretty pointless for this step though, as it doesn't really have any useful properties at this stage; no high solvent content to soften the surface of the resin and help it bond, no colour to paint over, and no "tooth" to help help subsequent paint stick. I've heard a few people claim that Future is better than primer, but I assure you that they are quite wrong (and that if they happen to have had some measure of success, then it is more by luck and model preparation than it is due to the Future polish actually providing any benefit).

Hopefully that makes sense, and of course - if you want to test the various products out, then be my guest! :)
