Some Imperial Fists Questions

Hello!

I have been laying the ground work for future work on my own Imperial Fists and have thought to expand them into a 30k Force as well. Some questions I had while planning are:

What pattern armor would be most appropriate for Pre Heresy/Heresy era?

On that same note, would Indomitus pattern armor (the standard look for the 40K Terminator if I am not mistaken) be acceptable for use as command squads or decorated vets? I ask that one only cause in Praetorian of Dorn, Dorn himself teleports in with terminators wearing Indomitus pattern armor, they may have been Huscarls but it shows that, that pattern armor was around at some point!

Fluff wise do we know yet what the heraldry of the Huscarls are? or even their gear? At the moment I couldn't find much on them...

Lastly, which rite of war would you all recommend to start the path of collecting on?

I'd say for Heresy era Imperial Fists mkIII would look nice (cheaply obtained from Prospero set or ebay)

You can use Indomnitus pattern armour but personally I wouldn't. It has no benefit unlike Cataphractii or Tartaros - both of which are again, very easily obtained via ebay or purchased in box sets/individually from retailers.

The Advantage Indomitus would have would be the ability to use these kits to customize them (Barring the Crux Terminatus):

Though they can all be made to fit Tartaros well enough and end up looking sleeker.

Thanks for the input so far. I do like the MKIII kit and I love MKIV both of which are in plastic and easy to get! I was thinking a mix of the armor sets. Like using the MKIII for line troops and the MKIV for Veterans or specialists.

On the Terminator front it seems like it would be better to just go with either type of Heresy Era armor vs trying to fit in the Indomitus Armor!

Any suggestions on a Rite of War to follow? I Know the obvious choices would be to follow the Imperial Fist ones but I was curious if any other Rites would be recomended.

Isn't MKIII rarer and more suited to Vets?

MkIV was mass produced

According to some sources, mkIV was considered the best power armor suit available, and at least in older fluff it only started to be widely available shortly before the Heresy, which coupled with Horus manipulation of the resources to favour the traitors, would probably mea mkIV was in fewer numbers across the loyalists. It would make sense thus that it was reserved to officers (it is possible that this has been corrected or retconned).

On the other hand, the Fists recovered a number of mkIV suits from Mars, and if I recall correctly other sources suggest that mkIV was given to newer recruits as it was the most available at the moment.

Regarding mkIII, again some sources list it as relatively rare, and only used in void warfare and tight spaces. Then again, the Fists were well trained in those engagements, and had one of the biggest fleets, so having a huge number of mkIII suits them (and looks pretty nice on them). So basically any combination can be justified (as with most things regarding the legions).

Once the Heresy heats up* you've got MkVI as well - in Deliverance Lost the Raven Guard receive a bulk shipment sufficient to re-equip most of their number with it *from* the Imperial Fists. Forge World even does MkVI Fist pads.

* when the Raven Guard receive the MkVI shipment they are baffled by the numerical designation, having not heard of the designation "Mark 5" so I'm guessing that was pretty early on in the Heresy.

Regarding the rarity, or not, of the various armour marks, isn't it all a bit relative to the size of the Legions as well?

For example, I think the Imperial Fists were around 100,000 strong at the time of the heresy. If only 10% of those were equipped with Mark 3 armour (with the rest clad in Mark 2, 4, terminator plate or whatever), that's still 10,000 Iron armoured marines.

So unless you have really, really ambitious plans for building a 30k army, I think it's quite safe to choose the armour marks you like the most, as the background can certainly accommodate it. ☺

Just use both - there's no reason why you can't (I do!)

You can justify the use however you want.

For me the lighter Mk IV makes sense to use on my more mobile units; vets and seekers, whilst the heavier MkIII is perfect for my stactic defensive units; HSS and breachers.

But I can also see why people prefer it the other way round.

Just put yourself in the commanders position and arm/ armour your squads as you see fit!

My answer to this question is normally "use whichever you think looks coolest"! smile.png It's a big legion and a big galaxy, any armour mark can be justified. I personally went for MkVI, since it's one of my favourites aesthetically.
