The Order of the Resplendent Dawn

Hi all.

Here is a thread I'm making about my homebrew Order! I'll include lore, painting updates and maybe some battle reports. Hopefully someone finds it interesting. Either way, it'll be good to get some of this on 'paper'.

The Order of the Resplendent Dawn

5e9a669fb6510dda20f1e29c86be7658.png

Founded: 38th Millennium.

Leader: Canoness Superior Shiana Rayne.

Founder: Dominga Reyes, Palatine of the Order of the Argent Shroud.

Parent Order: The Argent Shroud.

Convent: The Saint's Retreat (Mountainside Monastery), Shaiyera (Shrine World), Ultima Segmentum.

Founding:

The Resplendent Dawn was formed in m38 in the aftermath of a great victory by the Order of the Argent Shroud over a daemonic host assailing the Shrine World of Shaiyera Secundus. After the defeat of the local PDF and the sacking of the world's two great cities, a Commandery of the Argent Shroud based at a shrine to one of its long dead heroines was all that remained of the Imperial resistance. It is said that during the Sororitas' last stand against the daemons, after a long night of desperately defending the Saint's Retreat, a miracle occurred.

Saint Shaiyera herself, bathed in the golden light of the rising sun and returning centuries after her reported death, joined the defenders and led a counter attack against their tainted foes. With a wave of newfound energy and renewed determination, the Sisters cut a swathe through the daemons and towards their warp tainted summoners. The malign witches were then duly gunned down with the utmost prejudice. With the bulk of the enemy force defeated and the rest fleeing into the wilderness, the Saint disappeared. The Sororitas, rather than feeling a sense of loss, felt only elation as they grasped the importance of her divine intervention.

Whether this account was entirely true or not is debatable. However, after a few years of organisational delay and a letter of request written by Palatine Hermaia Reyes, the Order of the Resplendent Dawn was formed on the world by the Argent Shroud and charged with upholding the legacy of Saint Shaiyera. They were named and coloured in honour of her dawn lit intervention, swapping silver for golden yellow.

Style:

The Sisters of the Order of the Resplendent Dawn have inherited many of the virtues held by their parent order, the Argent Shroud. They are self sacrificing, optimistic and are particularly keen on the protection of the faithful. Unlike the Argent Shroud, the Resplendent Dawn also takes an active role in the governance of Shaiyera Secundus, are very vocal in their joyous worship of the Emperor and its Sisters are encouraged to speak their minds.

They are often found joining various Crusades and Wars of Faith throughout the Segmentum (and at times across the Galaxy). The Order has built up a good relationship with the Argent Shroud and has reaped the benefits, being assigned a higher number of new recruits than most lesser orders. There are normally only a hundred or so Sisters formally stationed on Shaiyera Secundus at any one time, with the other Commanderies fighting elsewhere or only returning to rest and recover. Every decade however, the entire Order meets at the Saint's Retreat for a formal gathering and celebration.

Models:

I'm still painting these. I'm making speedy progress, though. smile.png Had the army for 12 years. Recently decided to paint strip my Argent Shroud and make them a homebrew Order.

As I've said before I like the colors, even if they are non-traditional. And thank you ever so much for not just leaving it at "and there was a saint that came back from the dead" :). Rather than tagging on a sentence at the end saying it may or may not be accurate, if you want to, you could integrate that uncertainty into the rest of the account. Sounds cool!

I'm thiiiiiis close (holds fingers really close together) to finishing the Order of the Glorious Reprisal's revamp. I need to get that done!

Thanks folks! I think write more fluff later today Dante. I was suddenly very tired! I'll add more to the Saint's bit - I wanted to reference my old, custom Argent Shroud Saint somehow. smile.png She's pictured above - it felt appropriate to have my Order founded from the Argent Shroud, since my first Sisters army 12 years ago (using most of these models) was Argent Shroud. :P I'm quite glad to have the link.

The yellow is a little more amber than the Imperial Fists, I think.

Yellow sisters! censored.gif YEAH!

(Mine have yellow vest but it's fine anyway)

After painting Argent Shroud and Iron Warriors for years, I decided it was time for a change! I wasn't sure that it would work out, but I'm quite pleased with the results. It'll hopefully look good and unique on the battlefield.

Nice. I really like how the army looks mustered. It's almost feels like the Imperial Fist version of the Adepta Sororitas. The cloak and hood on the old Celestine looks great too.

Thanks! I'd call them the Imperial Sists but that sounds a bit gross.

I adore the imagery of Living Saints. In particular, the art for Celestine in Codex: Witch Hunters. I really wanted to build/write my own, though obviously used Celestine's rules. I built/painted her a number of years ago and I was still only really learning how to do conversions, but I'm still pretty happy how the model turned out.

Hehe that's were my order got their "as little red as possible" rule. Even though I haven't painted any of my BA, if I do it will be nice to have the armies contrast.

Battle Report: 1850 pts vs Tau

Mission 2, Kill Points.

It didn't take long for the Imperial response to the sedition of Silarus One. An Eccliesiarchy led fleet swiftly arrived at the xenos-loving planet, bombarded the capital city for four hours and sent down a force of Battle Sisters to seek and destroy any survivors. Unfortunately for the Sisters of the Resplendent Dawn, the Tau had already evacuated the city's population and lay in ambush to meet their foe on the field.

Celestine

Priest, Bolter, Book of St Lucius

2x Battle Sister Squads w/ Flamer and Heavy Flamer.

2x Immolator, Multimelta.

2x Battle Sisters Squads w/ 2 Meltaguns.

2x Immolator, Multimelta.

3x Dominion Squads, Veteran Superior, 4 Meltaguns.

3x Immolator, Multimelta, Laud Hailer.

3x Exorcist, Storm Bolter

1x 7 Retributors, 4 Heavy Bolters, Simulacrum Imperialis.

Vs. (iirc)

Tau Commander w/ missile drones

1x Riptide

3x Broadside (with missile drones)

3x individual Crisis Battlesuits (2 w/ fusion, 1 w/ missiles)

1x 10 Fire Warriors w/ guardian drone and gun drone.

1x 10 Pathfinders w/ recon drone.

2x 10 Breachers w/ shield drone and gun drone.

4x Devilfish

Formation: Counter Attack & Retaliation formations, from Farsight Enclaves.

Deployment:

My opponent deployed first. As he had automatic deep striking units on Turn 2, and a healthy fear of Dominion Alpha Strikes, he set up his Devilfish deep into his deployment zone so that I couldn't possibly reach him after the scout move. He had two Breacher Devilfish in the centre of the board, the Pathfinder Devilfish on his left flank and a 10 man Fire Warrior squad on his right flank. I pointed my four Battle Sister squads down the main road, slightly to the left of my deployment zone and as far forward as possible. I left my exorcists behind, my Retributors in the building opposite his Fire Warriors and Celestine in the middle of the board. I forgot to take a picture, but you can get an idea from the Turn 1 photo.

Turn 1:

Turn 1 was fairly painless for both sides. Only one Battle Sister died (a meat shield Retributor - you can see her in the 'medicae bay' at the top of the picture) and the exorcists, 4 snap firing immolators and the rending Retributors managed to inflict two hull points on one Devilfish.

Turn 2 (my opponent):

My opponent's deep strikers landed! The Broadsides, HQ and Riptide appeared on my right flank and were able to land freely due to a beacon held by the Pathfinders. His Crisis Battle Suits attempted to land behind my Exorcists, but 1 gad a misshap and I got to deploy it at the opposite side of the battlefield and the other only managed to destroy an Exorcist's storm bolter and immobilise it. The third was forgotten about and we agreed it could come down next turn. Meanwhile, the broadsides devastated my Battle Sister immolators! My flamer squads (which were aiming for the blobs of Fire Warriors/Breachers) were either forced to snapfire or unable to advance through units of two shield drones.

My turn 2:

Luckily for me two squads of Dominions arrived on the right flank. They were able to kill the Broadsides whilst Celestine and the Battle Sisters dealt with the Breachers. I killed the two Crisis Battlesuits that had landed with a melta gun from my third Dominion Squad (who also fortunately arrived, albeit from the other side) and some retreating Battle Sisters who went to support the back line.

Turn 3:

The two squads of Dominions were wiiped out by the Pathfinders, Commander and Riptide. Broken by Celestine in the middle of the board, and with Exorcists pointing in their direction, the Tau killed some Sisters with the odd pot shot, but also managed to seal the fate of another Immolator. The late Crisis Battlesuit shamefully missed four times with its missile pods at the rear of the badly damaged Exorcist. My opponent's luck at this point was prertty horrendous, but he took it well! With Celestine glowering down at them and three Exorcists preparing to unleash hell, the Tau retreated behind cover and scattered during their assault phase.

In my turn, the Exorcists managed to kill the retreating Tau Commander and his three Missile Drones. This allowed Celestine to kill the Pathfinders with her heavy flamer and split their Devilfish apart with her new Armourbane rule. She really was dominating this game, so far! My resurgent Battle Sister squads in the middle pursued the surviving Tau, but didn't achieve much as they failed to blow up the jinking Devilfish that was floating in the way. My back line protectors killed their second (and the final) Crisis, giving the Exorcists free reign for the rest of the game.

Turn 4:

The Tau destroyed my third Dominion Squad, stripped two Hull Points from an Immolator with 1 surviving Pathfinder (and his 4-shot-rapid-fire drone) and did their best to slow down the inevitable assault. In my turn, Celestine moved towards the Riptide with hatred in her eyes! I began to polish off fleeing squads, damaged Devilfish and embarked a Transport towards those annoying Fire Warriors who were firing at me with impunity all game.

In the assault phase Celestine reached the Riptide and, unfortunately, bounced off of his armour! The battlesuit then turned Genavieve into mush and I decided not to use Hit and Run.

Turn 5:

In Turn 5 the surviving Pathfinder hid behind a wall, but determined to finish off the hurt Immolator, his drone stayed in Line of Sight. Meanwhile, the Fire Warriors tried to contend with a Heavy Flamer squad arriving at the base of their building, but failed their difficult terrain check and couldn't see them. They instead killed two Battle Sisters in another squad, coming within one kill of securing another Kill Point. The Drone wasn't able to finish off the Immolator, whilst Celestine and the Riptide bounced off of each other again. I chose to Hit and Run, moved 11" towards the Fire Warriors, and prepared to Heavy Flamer...

My last turn was mopping up. Celestine killed the Fire Warriors, the Immolators killed the drone and my Melta Sisters failed to finish off the last Devilfish. The game ended at 13-9, with my opponent getting First Blood and me getting Linebreaker/Warlord. Here is a picture of my dead pile and his survivors pile.

It was a fun battle. We knew just looking at the army lists and through past experience playing each other that he'd struggle, but the fact that we rolled Kill Points helped to address the balance issues. The narrow deployment and the game ending on Turn 5 suited the Tau in this instance too, but in fairness to my opponent (and as should be obvious above) his rolling was atrocious. He had limited models to choose from and killed a lot of Sororitas, with me using my 'best' list.

Final Score: Resplendent Dawn 13, Tau 9.

*****

Sister Superior Magdela spat in frustration upon the rubble covered remnants of the road. The Xenos ambush had failed thanks to the return of the scouting Dominions, but even though the Sororitas had won the battle the cost had been substantial. Worst of all, the Heretics had escaped the planet before the Eccliesiarchy had even arrived!

Only the sound of screaming Fire Warriors, not all of whom had yet perished to their horrendous burns, could bring about some satisfaction. At the very least, the people of rural Silarus would know the price of Heresy - and the glorious power of the God Emperor.

Slight army update. This isn't my whole collection, just what I'll be playing with in my main list. I've added banner bearing models to the Dominion squads. Partly to use the models and partly to distinguish the Dominions during a game. In game they also have a melta gun.

Only three banners to do before all my infantry are done!

Draft Order symbol:

Thoughts? Obviously I'd try to make the sunrays match more in the real thing! Also, I gave my models a matt gloss today and, thankfully, they didn't frost over!

So, I think I like the half sun better than the entire round one with half blackened in.   It just looks better, perhaps shrink the fleur and move it more center of the sun.   Also, one little thing that is bothering me, is the lack of symetry to your sun's rays.  This is an army icon, and well, it would be symetrical.  Just look at the rising sun icon Imperial Japan used, all the beams were matched up.   Essentially they should match if you were to fold it in half, they should line up.    As a one off, it could work, but if this was an icon that would be mass produced to be sewn into cloth, put on vehicles, armor, and banners, it would be symetrical.

as for my suggestion to move the fleur up, is well, its cut off and that makes it look like an incomplete symbol.   I only suggest shrinking it a little and moving it up, so the entire fleur is in place, and having none of it touching the bottom edge of the sun itself, there should be a small red line at least under it.     I also suggest ditching the entire black line under the first example completely, and just going with a red semi circle.  If you want to add black to it, perhaps doing the fleur de lys in black instead with a white outline.  That would make it pop, and keep it basic as well.

Oh I completely agree. The rays will be fixed - this was a quick photoshop draft! :) The lack of symmetry was due to me just testing out the basic idea and 'scribbling' (if you know what I mean).

I had the symbol incomplete because, theoretically, the rest is still covered below the 'surface'. If the entire sun is the Fleur. I'll test it out with it being fully visible.

Okay. Here are four variants. I've given them a yellow background, since that's what my vehicles have. It could also go in front of 'bleached bone' (on banners). The yellow here is a bit brighter than what I have, but close enough.

Yes, option 1 and 2 look best, with 2 really standing out because the white does pop more, but it clashed with the white background. With the yellow background it works so much better than the black does.

And I understand the scribbling, sometimes I get my best drawings from the worst of scribbles.
