14th 'Lurcher' Brigade

Sooo, I'm starting a renegades and Heretics army. I'm hoping to keep this up to date as my army progresses.

The group who I paly with have late last year got into the Heralds of Ruin kill team. I was using my chaos lamentors... but have decided a new army is in order, the unwashed masses of the lost and the damned.

I've scoured my bits, found a lot of the old metal stormtroopers, some renegade ogryns and some scions. With the release of the stealer cultist box... the skitari tracked servitor things... well it just converts itself in my mind!

So my plan is for a 200 point kill team, growing to a 650 point army within a few months, then a 1000 point army by the mid year.

My starting list will use the bloody handed reaver to allow for grenadiers, and to vaguely keep the model count down.

So without further ado, here are some pics of my start:

More to come in a week or so I hope :smile.:

Very promising start. I especially like the mutants, lovely conversions you've got there. Welcome to R&H.

Is your arch-demagogue painted already? I'd also suggest to straighten out his plasma pistol, the angle looks a bit off at the moment. Easy fix.

Keep us posted.

Yeah... I don't have the patience to go through an remove every aquilla, so am explaining it away as looted kit/recently turned. Also if I did get that hung up on it... I'd never get this army done lol

Isinfier, I can't tell if you are being serious... the guys I play with... up to 1000 points we've all agreed no flyers, no superheavies, no knights etc. it's a very easy going group, so I am not too worried, and even if I lose, I'm sure it'll be a blast.

Thanks Brother Kortmer! Any paint on them at this stage is from a previous paint job/old use. So he was painted up to appear in my cadian army before being repurposed. Got some painting done last night, will hopefully have some updates later today when I have transferred pics over to the computer.

Kinda annoying about the plasma pistol now you point it out.. it's the stock arm from the scion kit, so I'll have to check tonight if it's me no aligning the head properly, or just a bad camera pic.

Thanks all for the warm welcome though! :smile.:

Okay, sorry for the double post (I assume I am allowed as it's my thread). Here are the WiP of my first two grenadiers (going to be a unit of 10 with 2 plasma guns, 2 hotshotvolley guns and the boss with plasma pistol), and first 5 renegades (going to be a command platoon unit with 4 grenade launchers, militia training, 2 autocannons).

Still need to add burnt grass to the renegades... but otherwise they are pretty much done. The grenadiers have a fair bit more work on them still. Already thinking undercoating white might be a mistake lol.

Okay... so I guess the WiP shots are no good :-p

So, I have been looking at the griffon tank... it looks amazing for such a small amount of points. I've just managed to snag one on ebay, so hoping that will be joining my ranks soon. Anyone got any thoughts on them or advice on how to run them? Should I be after a second as they are just that cheap it'd be better to run them in pairs?

In other news, played a Heralds of Ruin kill team game last Thursday, managed a draw against Tau.

His list was 3 firewarriors, 3 pathfinders, 2 normal stealth suits, 1 with a fusion gun, then a squad of 3 gun drones and his leader was a crisis suit with plasma rifle and missile pods.

My list was the champion with armour of despoiler (2+ sv), a plasma pistol, then 4 carapace grenadiers, 1 with hot shot volely and 1 with a plasma gun, a disciple with a plasma gun and targetter, 5 mutants with shotguns, 5 renegades with autoguns, a renegade heavy stubber team, and a ogyrn with 1 pet dog.

Stars of the game were the Ogyrn who smashed through 2 firewarriors, the crisis suit when it strayed too close and then the gun drones. My grenediers also managed a decent flank attack, trusting in their armour to whither a hail of fire and advance against the stealth suits and path finders.

The complete fail was my champion who managed to overheat twice, miss once and land one hit on target which failed to wound! My renegades and Disciple were gunned down in a turn when the drones, crisis suit and some others appeared behind them, so didn't really get to use them much.

Overall happy with the Kill team, played how I expected them to, and had a blast forcing the tau to do a fighting retreat, with the mutant and ogyrn swarming forwards and overwhelming some stuff, while the elite forces advance under the cover of extreme violence to take ground.

Hoping to get some more progress done on them and some new pics up soon.

Thanks for reading, comments, feedback and criticisms appreciated :smile.:

Spafe, your renegades are looking nice. I especially like the red stripe on the grenadier.

With regard to griffons, I'll vouch that it is a good unit. More importantly, it's a fun unit. A griffon was the first tank I painted for 40k 16 years ago and it has killed many light infantry models over the years. Of course a wyvern will kill about twice as many models for about the same points cost so these days I bring wyverns to tournaments and griffons to casual games.

Thanks for the replies guys. Yeah it was mostly tongue in cheek about the quietness, I know it's a small forum.

Good food for thought though. I will look into wyverns... I had just generally glossed over them for some reason.

Hopefully more updates soon, next games are schedules for the 23rd Feb, so will try and get some pics of them and have a fully finished force by then too.

Okay, time for another update. I've managed to get the Grenadiers finished, along with the first 5 mutants.

I also have a almost finished Packmaster for my oygrn unit, along with 2 dogs.

Tada!

I also got in the post a copy of IA 13, and a griffon.

Next up should be some more Grenadiers, another 5 mutants (this time with ccw and pistols) and an autocannon team to join my cultists. I've converted them, so will try and grab some pics tonight, then if I have time this evening, spraying them will happen and painting over the coming week.

Hope you like em!

Neat! What the heck models are those mutants? They look quite old school. Keep it going!

Thats probably the best part about Renegades, the conversion potential. Im about to start a force of my own, prehaps ill have to do a thread.

Thanks mate! The mutants are a mix, 3 of them are original scavies from the Scavy gang in necromunda that I have then done weapon swaps to, to give them shotguns. The mostly naked guy is a metal warhammer vampire counts ghoul (with added shotguns), and the final one is just a tallern dessert raider with barrel swap to a shotgun.

I have begun work on the next batch of troops. I have 7 more grenadiers, an autocannon heavy weapon team for my cultists, and another group of 5 mutants, these with pistols and close combat weapons.

Hope you all like them!

I've begun work on adding chaos stuff to a griffon I managed to snag on ebay, so that will be soon getting an undercoat, then I think I will need to work on some more actual cultists!

Ah excellent. Heh Im guessing youve been doing some deep bitz box raiding. I like the Blanchey Slaves to Darkness kind of look you seem to be doing.

I snagged a Vraks gun crew for my Griffon. Its funny reverting back to some of the original models I started 40k with 17 years ago : P

Cheers mate. I've made a little progress on that second batch, but as I'm getting married mid this year my hobby time has taken a significant hit to make way for planning that. Will hopefully have some progress by the end of next week that's worth taking pics of to show you guys :smile.:

Cheers :smile.:

So, I managed to get a little more done yesterday, after the first batch of mutants have blue mutations, this batch will have pinky red:

gallery_33656_12802_140461.jpg

And my grenadiers are a bit further along... got the green lenses to do and their bases. Oh, and the horns of the middle dude.

Thoughts?

I am not really sure. Because the model is undercoated white and I'm using some VJ black to paint the fatigues.... some have come out rather glossy in effect on the first batch, but I don't know why. I kinda liked the effect, and thought it would save me highlighting them (although it never really shows in pics sadly, looks good in real life though). But near the end of the first batch and then all of this one... no gloss at all... so I'm thinking I am going to have to highlight them somehow.

Any suggestions? I was reading on a black legion thread about highlighting black... but marines have it easy, as the concensus there seemed to be edge highlight with codex or similar grey (I have no idea what the new colour is called for codex grey). But with clothing I think it might look a bit odd. Maybe I'll revisit my first batch with a really dark grey over the majority so the black becomes shading.

Really not sure tbh.

Okay, I've not had time/got round to sorting a high light for the black yet, but I have got my Grenadiers to an almost finished point (wil ltry and get a pic of them soon), and made some progress on my cultists first heavy weapon, please excuse the rushed pics this morning before I dashed out the door.

gallery_33656_12802_318318.jpg

gallery_33656_12802_510899.jpg

The reds on the autocannon are lighter than it appears in the pic. I need to pick out some details on the bionics of the servitor but otherwise pretty happy with him.

Also I managed to get a heralds of ruin kill team game in with my Lurchers. It was against space wolves, an objective game. My list was 5 mutants with shotties, a cultist autocannon heavy weapon team, 5 cultists with a nade launcher, 4 grenadiers with a plasma gun, a disciple with a plasma gun and my boss with a plasma pistol and armour of the despoiler (2+ save).

The wolf list was roughly, a rune priest, a long fang with missile launcher, 5 grey hunters with 1 plasma gun, and a lone wolf in termi armour with scary combat kit.

I managed to wipe out the entire wolf kill team and claim 4 out of 5 objectives for the lose of 1 grenadier, although my opponent got very unlucky and his lone wolf never arrive from reserve.

I only got one pic as the lighting was terrible, it's of my grenadiers flanking through some ruins before grabbing an objective and blasting the ruin priest and one grey hunter from a walkway across from them.

gallery_33656_12802_308137.jpg

hope this is a decent enough update. I'll try to get some pics of the mutants progress and my chaosified griffon over the next week :smile.:

Okay, so now that 8th has dropped and I'm trying to work out which way up is, some intial thoughts of disapointment have passed and I've decided to move onwards.

So my grenadiers are kaput for now, I'll not really be doing much more on that front (saving my precious stormies that arnt converted until I have either a renegade list that allows them, or my guard need extra stormies added to them). I can however still use my light infantry and my mutants. I've got a unit of mordians and a lascannon crew on my to do pile, along with a unit of 10 diaz demonettes.

I'm off on my honeymoon in a few days, so this is mostly to put my thoughts down for when I'm back and my gaming group kicks off our 40k campaign. I'm loving the mix of different forces of chaos again, that is a big plus that stops me feeling too hard done by on my lack of heavy infantry.

So my intial thoughts on a power level 50 Battalion list is thus:

Renegade commander, Cov of Slanesh, Power fist, Plasma pistol (this guy is still to be built so a better/more thematic load out I'mm all ears).

Marsque of Slanesh (to be bought/converted out of...something, ideas?)

Disciples, 5 man team with lascannon (mordians)

10 Mutants, 5 shotguns, 4 auto pistols, boss with power axe and pistol

20 renegades, 2 grenade launchers, vox, icon, 2 auto cannons (my light infantry I've started converting further up this thread)

10 chaos marines, flamer, champion with powerfist and pistol, mark of slanesh (traitor lamentors I have already done)

10 deamonettes, icon, instrument (diaz deamonettes with some conversions to be made)

Raptors, 5 man team with a flamer and champion with power maul, mark of slanesh (more traitor lamentors I have)

Hellhound (got the model, needs some rescuing as it was an ebay purchase)

Griffon mortar tank (got the model ready for paint, love this old tank!)

50 power level on the nose. Any thoughts?

towards the end of the month I'll snap some pics of the things I've got and a group shot of where I've got to.
