Returning to the Papa... and a return to the hobby

I recently came back to the hobby through a few work friends and now am a full blown Addict again. I am no pro and may have been seen skulking through these forums looking for cool ideas.

I started my Death Guard about ten years or so ago before putting the hobby up and now that i am back Id like to finish that stuff up first!

First up is my Daemon Prince (yet to be named)

Followed by a Dreadnaught (helbrute now?)

Some Champions

Clearly they all need some touch ups and some cleaning up. Looks like 17-19 me was a lot less patient than 30 year old me hahaha..... New bases based on the larger size GW uses now, not sure on the terrain choice as of yet. Will be posting some WIP pics as I get projects up and running.

Welcome back to the hobby! You've picked a great time to get back too. GW is on its way back to smart and reasonable pricing and packaging, and with the new Traitor Legions book, your Nurgle Death Guard units got arguably the best deal with the crunch.

Those sculpted bellies look gross great! :tu:

Thanks! As a avid follower to your work that means a lot!

Heres some WIP as promised...

A few champions (needed some without power fists)

And some more termies... Hoping for some paint within the week!

Love it. Do you have a specific list in mind for them?

Trying to stay with the fluff, lots of ground troops, termies, and dreads... but i feel like bikes is a must with the new rules.... still working out the kinks

Long week but I do have a few updates on the Papa's Swarm as it is coming together!!

First I hit a bit of a snag.... I went to my local hobby shop after realizing that all my paints had dried up (after about 10 years I'm not all that surprised) and then was faced with the reality that GW had changed all the names to their Paint line since I had last bought paint.... UGH. The guy at the store told me he could look up the old color names and match them for me, which sounded great! after about 45 min and 100 bucks (US) I was on my way!

After painting and doing a layer of drybrushing, something felt off... So I grabbed a half painted model from before I stopped and noticed this......

http://i349.photobucket.com/albums/q372/randy_cox4/IMG_0754_zpsprhg5o2y.jpg

Needless to say.... not super happy.... Back to the hobby store the next day to buy a few more paints and the same guy as before then tells me "some of the charts aren't always correct." which would have been great to know BEFORE I painted a model... But I guess you live and learn.

Got the colors about right and now have two Champions painted/drybrushed/rough highlights... gonna let them dry over night and then hit the inks/washes/flesh.

As always... any tips or recommendations are welcome.... ALSO if anybody has a tip for losing those large shadows behind the models in the pics, id love to know. (I don't have a light box.)

  • 1 month later...

Sorry for the long delay, new roommate moving in and had to move my desk. Luckily my house has a built in vanity that I don't have a use for.....

http://i349.photobucket.com/albums/q372/randy_cox4/IMG_0889_zpsj10ogq1n.jpg

Built some new melta gun marines since the last time I played (3.5) no body used them and everyone used Plasma... Got a chance to use some of the new (ish?) Forgeworld Deathguard heads. I really like these things. Im looking forward to getting some more of it!

http://i349.photobucket.com/albums/q372/randy_cox4/IMG_0860_zpstpoeuvol.jpg

Had a pretty cool marine built without a purpose, so with an old IW metal melta and some jewelry chain.... Voila!

http://i349.photobucket.com/albums/q372/randy_cox4/IMG_0859_zpsxchsi0xc.jpg

Early work on some bikes.... Would love any tips/criticisms, on these. Don't want them to just look like bikes with caked on GS.... rolled it pretty thin in order to try and make it look like a part of the bike. The back needs some more action for sure. Still have a lot of work to do to get the right coverage. Old bases will be removed once they are ready for paint. Do people usually drill out the exaust tubes in the back? I cant seem to find any images of the back of one....

Most of the work on the armor of the termies/champs is done, will have pics this week once I get some of the touch ups done. In the meantime, I mostly finished the bases for them, I have some dead grass tufts on order, should be in this week. Really happy with how they came out! first time using cork for bases, just got sick of seeing people using it and how cool it looked!

As always all tips or ideas are welcome... That is if anybody other than Augustus is reading this thing! HAHAHAHAHA

Great looking squad, I like the slung melta! For the bikes some potential ideas could be some sort of septic tank on the back with cables leading back to the rider, pinning random zombie parts to the bike, adding pustules, sculpting cracks in the armor of the bike showing exposed wiring or mechanisms. You've already got a nice corroded feel to the bikes! I don't think a majority of people drill out the exhausts but certainly is a nice touch when they do.

Great looking scultping on the marines - indeed the DG helmets look the part on them! The melta dude looks great too. I know how fiddly that jewelry chain can be, so kudo's!

I wonder if you could sculpt some pustules or warts on the bikes. Rednekkboss' Templars of DOOooom! thread can be of inspiration to you - especially this post! :tu: :)

Look who had to days off this week! Got some work completed (unless I go back for more minor tweaks....

Finished my two Champions of Nurgle (names pending)

http://i349.photobucket.com/albums/q372/randy_cox4/IMG_0935_zpsfbd8ra46.jpg

Also finished up my first set of terminators, including the champion which doubles as a counts as Typus until I can get one built for him. Thinking of using the new Burning of Prospero terminator legs for the next set I do (still have 5 more FW torsos to use)

Really happy how these came out, but they do make the ones from ten years ago look pretty bad. I may have to go back and touch those up a bit to make them all look the same quality.

As always, let me know what you think, crits/tips welcome, cant learn if no one tells you...

Nice work, buddy! Painting looks good. :) Also, I like how you take the trouble of putting the mini's on cloth and putting decent lighting on them! GW recently released a great tutorial on miniature photography, from which we can get some great pointers, if you´re willing to improve. An obvious pointer for you would be to crop your pics a bit to focus on them. Practice makes perfect, and you're well on your way, so keep it up! :tu: :D

Great article, betting the natural light light bulbs would solve most of my issue, along with the cropping part. I can even do that from my phone!

sorry its been so long, between work and the photobucket collapse I have had some trouble updating, but Ive moved over to imgur and hoping this works! Im going to be posting a bit more now that im so back logged with models to work on, I bought the new Dark Imperium set and had a large FW order show up!

My bikes are coming along nicely, pipes to spew out the pappa's blessings came out better than I hoped, and all the green stuff is done. Now if I can just get GW to add bikes into the DG army list ill be set!:ermm:

http://i.imgur.com/8INoQ6H.jpg

The riders are look really good I think, lot of different configurations that all fit quite nicely on the bikes ( I used a "test fit" bike i had lying around to be sure).

My second set of terminators are ready for arms, since im using 5 more FW torsos I wanted to make sure they would look different from the first set (I cant have two identicle models in a army, makes me twitch.) Also really hoping GW allows terminators in a DG army soon, I dont know why their not there since Morty's personal guard were termies... but maybe with the rumored new codex coming they will be added! *Fingers crossed*

Really happy with the new gut work im trying out, im no pro but I do think its progress!

Lastly I have all the bases built and ready for paint for all the models I have coming down the pipe!
